[Q] [HOW TO] Creating a new theme for Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a newbie in the world of theme development but I have a game changing UI concept. I would request you all to kindly show me a way to create a custom skin for android. Like htc made sense, samsung made touchwiz, I would like to create my own skin on top of the stock android interface with almost everything different.
Thanx in advance!

I dont think androids stock launcher is skinnable ...
You can install an alternative launcher like "go launcher ex" or "ADW launcher"
Those are skinnable and there are tutorials on making themes.

I was not looking for that.
I meant I wanted to change the whole way Android looks and feels.
Kind of like the difference of the interface between stock Android and Samsung TouchWiz.

If you want to do so, you have to write a new Launcher/HSR (Home screen replacement) yourself.
You will need advanced Java skills and a lot of time.

I have loads of time and I know Java.
I'm willing to do it. Wish someone would guide me. Where to begin? I've not done anything like this before!

[Q] Building a Plain text Launcher (Terminal/Command prompt Style)

Hi all, I'm newly registered here and I've found only 1 thread concerning this.
My question is this: How hard would it be to build a Launcher that doesn't use graphics, only text. I ask this because I've never programmed for android, but I have some experience in actionscript and basic. It's not very much tho, and I've tried many different programming languages over the years, mostly basic stuff in school (php, java, c++, javascript).
I always liked the look of CWM recovery on my Galaxy 3. It's really crisp and I wondered if I could make a launcher myself that would emulate that look and feel.
I also liked how more of the screen could be used since you could use vol+/- keys for navigation, and not just your touchscreen. That means smaller fonts and more options on screen at one time.
Is it possible for me, as a total beginner, to build a really simple launcher that I could later expand with widgets etc?
Im youre fan... from now )
i'll be youre big fan if you create something like that - simple text launcher is my dream =)

You could use Go Launcher EX with this theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps...XUuZ28ubGF1bmNoZXJleC50aGVtZS53aW5ieXJleW4iXQ.
Thank you, but no thank you. The first one is Metro, indeed. But it is WP7 Metro and not W8 tablet Metro. And here is the issue. The launcher was designed for smartphones, for small displays. It looks weird on big screens.
The second one is not Metro, but an (ugly) interpretation of if. I really don't like all these launchers that are basicly same. LauncherPro, GoLauncher, ADW - they are all the same, absolutly not innovative. I miss something like this home screen replacement (i forgot the name) that showed only text, news, feeds, stuff like that. That was awesome, but unfortunatly the project was canceled.
I wonder why there is no real innovation anymore. As far as I know, Android is the best plattform for developting stuff like that.
I noticed your thread while posting my win 8 metro ui for the nook tablet. I know this is old, but if youre still looking for it, I can help you. what tablet do you have so I can port the theme? and this only works on ICS right now. I got it off of here: metro ui
You have to set up the metro widgets and adw launcher yourself, but I can port the home, back, recents, and settings theme for you to flash, just show me where to download the ICS rom you want to use it on.
I got the metro UI on the nook tablet go to the nook tablet themes and app section, and instructions are right on top.

This is old, but maybe someone is looking at it: I can recommend the Metro UI Launcher 8. Its a good imitation of the Modern UI

Advanced ICS CM9 Customization

Hi. There have been various images of Android devices that have been greatly customized that look nothing like the original stock Android. How do people make such advanced customization. How can I try to do this on my Motorola Defy with CM9? What apps on Android and programs on the computer can help with this? I personally have a Ubuntu computer but can access a Windows one if needed.

try a couple of launchers and themes.
i recommend Apex launcher, and search the play store for themes.
what is it that you mean with "advanced customization"?
something like my screenshots attached?
greetz,
sUsH
Yeah sUsH667. Like that. By the way, your system looks amazing like that. When I mean advanced customization, I don't mean simply downloading a new launcher and finding a theme. The stuff you did with Android make it look entirely different from stock Android and in a good way. I want to do something like that on my device.
Launchers are a huge part of getting the customization that most users have. The default just doesn't have the same abilities, though because of Soft Keys and a few other things you can actually make a lot happen even with the stock version. A large part of it is also functional widgets that users have added.
Anyway have a look through this thread if you want to see how users do it. Most people give some kind of explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3236616#post3236616

Phone editing

Hello,
I am fairy new to android scene and I really enjoyed personalizing my jail broken iPhone. I switched to android cause of the ability to personalize it however I am a little confused I am looking for a way to change some text strings. For instance on the iPhone I was able to change the message that appeared when you entered the wrong passcode. Same as the power off message saying "never" instead. I would like to know how to do this as well as change the icons on the phone I due know how to do this on the iPhone but am really lost on android any help would be great sorry that I don't know a lot of the correct terms.
Well I'm not particularly sure how to change the text on the things you described because I believe you would have to change the framework of the ROM...
As for theme... That's easy, you just need to install an alternative launcher as golauncher, nova or apex... These ha e separate theme packs you can download which will theme the icons and give you ability to change them yourself... But the icons packs won't work with stock launcher if that's what you are using
I use go launcher and what I would like to do is make my own compete theme is there software out there that I could use and I would like to learn how to possible write or understand the code but don't know where to start any suggestions would be great thanks again for the reply

Go to golauncher website... I believe they have certain tools and guides available for you to make your own theme
thanks

sorry to say (this is my opinion) that app is pure crud! basically it's trying to add widgets / multi window(ish) functionality to the home screen of a sh(I)te phone! just to be like an Android phone! we already have widgets and multi window that do those things. i personally wouldn't see a benefit!
Pretty sure i've seen a launcher doing something close to this (sorry can't remember it's name, but im sure it came from the playstore, so maybe try some from there) but, pretty much this:

why would you want to run apps in half of what's already a "small" screen?
