Best sounding Android phone (DAC etc)? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's a bit of an OT, but related to XDA, because so far, it seems the best sound comes from a Galaxy S with custom kernel for voodoo due to the Wolfson DAC inside. Someone then said, all Tegra Chipsets come with a Wolfson (?) but all info I could find was related to a Wolfson Power Management Chip, not a DAC. Also, I wonder what kind of output impendace matching phones have, as I got some slightly difficult to drive in-ears, requiring a very low OI.
Since there are competent people here dealing with specific hardware and probably able to give more than a "My phone sounds whoopey!" answer, I thought I'd ask here ... also with the idea of a pointer to a possible custom rom?

I don't think there's better than the phones with the Wolfson DACs on the market. I know there's stuff like the HTC Rezound being touted as a music phone but we both know this doesn't really target real music amateurs rather than people wanting some boom boom (yeah, Beats buds...). Doesn't mean it doesn't have good stuff in it though.

Right ... I'm not talking about those HTC Boomphones for schoolyard kids. The Galaxy S already had it fairly right with the Wolfson DAC ... for whatever reason, they didn't use its amping capability, which all sounds massively better than whatever other amp is in there ... bizarre. Why put in great hardware and then not use it. Later it sadly vanished for the known crappy Yamaha chip.....
Maybe if enough people scream, HTC will hear us ... after all, they NEED reasons people would have to buy a new phone. There's one. Go produce it, HTC.

I don't know, as I said I don't think there's any better phone for music than those with Wolfson DACs currently on the market. *shrugs*

Well I followed that idea ... and won an auction for an LG Optimus 2x yesterday ... I'll see next week, how the Wolfson in there behaves. if I understood right, in many cases, you just have to root the phone and the voodoo app will insmod the wolfson kernel modules? That'd be a bit easier for a start than to use a cusom mod.

Samsung Galaxy R also have wolfson DAC.

I wonder if the new HTC One lineup will have Wolfson DACs...or something better?

[Q] Smartphone for an Audiophile

Presently have a Galaxy Nexus & an S2. Both are fine phones in their own right but....
I don't think there all that good at audio reproduction..
I want to use my flac music files with kplisch earphones with Poweramp.
Can you recommend an andriod smartphone thats got excellent sound quality?
As the title says....I'm looking for a Smartphone for an Audiophile.

a HTC maybe? they have beats audio
Sensation, Sensation XE, One X, S, V...
You should install Equalizer on whatever phone you get. It has a system wide EQ that doesn't require root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer
I'm not really sure what Beats Audio does, I imagine its just an equalizer. I imagine the beats headphones are a total scam as they are made by Monster the same company that rips people off by selling them overpriced HDMI cables saying they are somehow better.
Rezound or One X

You do know Texas instruments bought burr brown a few years ago? On that note I prefer ti's sound chip over wolfson's slightly. The sound is cleaner and more balanced. The wolfson sounds great but has muddier bass.

Any phone with Beats Audio (some say it isn't THAT good) or any Xperia phone (the Xperia P have xLoud + 3D Sound)

I'm in the UK so it'd have to be a model that works over here.
I've heard that beats audio doesn't make that much difference & doesn't really improve the sound
Try the Sony Ericsson smart phones as they produce the best quality audio. Like Xperia, Walkman Live, etc...
Stay away from anything with beats. The headphones are overpriced rubbish (you have your own anyway) and the sowftware is just a glorified EQ which in my opinion is far to exaggerated and detracts from the sound quality. I'm not sure which phones have the best DAC chips but I bet it would be one of the Sony phones marketed for music playback. if you really wanted to figure it out you could go through each prospective phones spec sheets and compare the data.
Or you could do what I did and accept that phones arent very good at audio playback and get yourself a decent music player. i went and bought sansa clip which is so much better than my galaxy s2 at music playback

Say NO to beats audio - it's overpriced and you get nothing special in terms of hardware. Almost every HTC's are SoC and are all the same with audio hardware.
I own HD2 and sound quality is very good, though far from superior. Some samsung's are good too, few motorola's have excellent audio quality.
I've always thought beats to be a gimmick.
Is there anyway of finding out what DAC is in a smart phone. I tried google but didn't get very far.
Whats the new HTX One X like for music with beats off of course.
Any other recommendation's would be cool.
Get the Galaxy S. Remember: only the original Galaxy S and its variants (captivate, vibrant, epic touch something). Its Wolfson DAC is awesome, it's even more powerful with Voodoo Sound. And with a decent audio player (like PowerAmp) = perfect.

SGS Plus also uses a Wolfson DAC like the original SGS, but not exactly the same one. Supercurio (Voodoo sound developer) said there will be no Voodoo Sound for the SGS+ because of that.
WOW. Do not listen to ANYTHING people say regarding Beats and HTC. It's just a terrible equalizer that bloats the bass, and shatters the mids and don't even ask about highs. To get straight to the point: no phone currently out is good source material. At all. You should get a portable amp, like say, the E7 or E17 and run with that. Beats is THE ABSOLUTE WORST thing you can go for right now.
That being said, I suppose the Galaxy S is best for your needs. I would hazard a guess that most Sony phone have decent source components in them as well.
Seriously can't believe people are recommending the One X or the Rezound. If it's just because Beats, that's silly. Has NOTHING to do with the quality of the source components. Beats Audio is a terrible program and nothing more (outside of the terrible earbuds and terrible cans)

[Q] i9100 v. 19100g - audio DAC affect call quality?

I'm looking to purchase an S2, debating whether or not to get the i9100 or the i9100g. Overall, they seem pretty even, given that they both have pros and cons.
This is a phone after all which means I'll be placing and receiving calls and maximizing call quality is important to me. Reportedly, the i9100g has a better audio DAC.
My question is, does the audio DAC affect call quality at all (I mean native calls, not via apps like Skype)? Or does this only affect other types of sound, like music, sound effects, etc? If the audio DAC has nothing to do with native call quality, then theoretically, neither version is better or worse than the other.
Thanks in advance.
i9100G is inferior and has poor rom development .
jje
i am sure i posted here
who deleted it :/
i9100 is way better
better chipset/camera/ screen everything
Thanks but I'm looking for the answer to my specific question - does audio dac affect voice quality (both mine and other party) in calls? It's a fact that the TI chipset has a different dac than the exynos.
Those generic responses don't help as I've stated that I already looked into the pros/cons of both models already.
Thanks.
Talked to someone at work. In layman terms, he said that since voice calling quality is relatively low fidelity compared to listening to high quality MP3s, the difference in the DACs probably won't be noticed during phone conversations.
Anyone agree/disagree?
Also, the G doesn't seem to be necessarily inferior according to some people. From what I've read, non-G has faster GPU, more community support, little smoother. The G has slightly better battery life, no color banding, less heat. It seems like personal preference to me. So back to my original question - if the answer was yes the DAC affects call quality, I probably would go with the G since call quality is important to me. Otherwise, it's a coin toss for me. I'm not a hardcore modder, the most I'll probably do is root the phone lol.

US sgs3 audio DAC?

we all know Int'l version is a wolfson dac. What about the US version? same as htc one s/x? i hope they disable the S4 built in dac and put in a wolfson one. I will be disappointed if they gimp the US version again(quad-core,cpu, now audio)
I'm also hoping for the Wolfson DAC. I wouldn't be surprised though if again we are left out.

The US version isn't gimped because it has the dual core S4. It's a beast, very energy efficient, and has an LTE radio. More cores doesn't equal better performance. We also get 2gb of instead of 1. Sounds to me like the International version was gimped.
Like you, I hope for the Wolfson DAC, but my One X sounds great and is crystal clear, so no worries other than hoping Samsung used proper shielding inside this thing. The interference on the Note was horrendous!

Been thinking about this myself. We got two weeks... then I can hold mine
Yeah this is my main concern too. But it wasn't until I was looking at the teardown of the GSIII that I realized that the 'wolfson DAC' was a separate chip, not a thing on the exynos SOC like the mali etc. It seems like this release is a 'details & polish' generation so I'm still hoping.

Did you happen to read the below quote from that link?
" Winner – Tegra 3: Not many apps are optimized for quad-core, but several benchmarks are."
Let me guess, benchmarks are everything right? I have the S4 One X now and this thing is blazing fast. Actually, in real world performance the S4 outperforms the Tegra 3 version. Processors are way ahead of app development anyway. I'm my opinion, the only thing the quad core has over the S4 is a better gpu. I don't really game with my phone so that doesn't bother me at all, but you can give me more ram any day.

Supercurio commented specifically on that site to say they are untrustworthy, I'd take their news with a grain of salt.

do u recommend this over hox(one x)

hi everyone,
i have an htc one x and i am considering the s3, i've got a few questions though(not hardware wise)
why should i choose the s3(software i know hardware can be slightly better than the hox)
i mean htc has the sense clock, weather, friend stream etc..... what about s3(iv never had a samsung mobile)
also audio: what type of enhancer does it have?
im willing to sell my hox to buy one!
thanks
There's a lovely flamefest discussion already going on over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652250
Personally, the One X was never an option for me because of the lack of a microSD card slot
TouchWiz? TouchWiz is a lot more closer to AOSP (though, saying that, it's still rather far away) than Sense. The GS3 has a weather widget (which you can see if you Google the GS3) with the time in it. I haven't noticed any friend stream stuff, but then again I haven't been looking hard.
Audio: Dunno. Just standard EQ stuff. The DAC is quite nice in the GS3 so the bass boost option is nice, and if that's your cup of tea the Siyah kernel can really bring up the bass. Also worth noting that HTC sold back (EDIT: half) their stake in Beats...
Hardware wise sgs3 is better than the x. One main factor to include in your selection selection is the fact that the Sammy is more popular within the devs so the phone will probably go to it's potential. I mainly chose it because Samsung has the upper hand when making phones in my opinion I would go as far to say that there isn't currently a better phone on the market.

I have been in different stores trying the speakers, and I have to say they sound nice pretty nice and loud. I never buy phones with no dual speaker configuration, and for the first time Samsung is doing this, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. About the headphone jack, I wouldn't be able to say, but I think most of the phones are in the same level except for LG V line.

I think many of us would like that, but they didn't say anything about a special DAC, so I doubt they implemented something really special for audio.

Sigh. Wish they did. I love the v20 but the lack of updates on LGs part is just pitiful. Still on 7.0 with Dec security patch. Nice camera, Excellent audio output through the jack [what i care about].
Might as well buy a dedicated dac and the s9.
Edit: What would be a good DAC to buy?

Honestly, I don't care that much about if they use a specialized DAC or nor as long as it sounds decent. I was more worried about the speakers, but they sound really nice.
Usually I'm not much time with headphones, maybe 1-2 times per month, but everyday I see videos and I appreciate a lot the stereo speakers, which are really good.

So apparantly it's running the latest cirrus logic we will have to wait a bit for root to tell exactly which one. Sound is great through high end headphones, rich sound louder than the s8

High impedance?
I have the Amiron and DT 770 80 ohm and the volume level in the S8 is too low.
If S9 is louder I'm seriously considering a switch

Guess will have to wait for Dolby to be ported to the S8 before rooting.
Sounds quite good with the sound personalisation (test tones) all with "yes" - using AK T8ie mkII it sounds pretty credible.
Dolby Atmos is a major turn-off to me though
It does sound different to the Note 8 (both international versions), more authorative - so, definitely feels like an upgrade.
The audio chip in the S9+ is the same as in the S8 series.
Cirrus Logic CS47L93 Audio Codec.
