[Q] Copying contacts between accounts from the android device - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Before you continue reading, this is not a question about moving contacts from one android device to another, or from an iPhone to an android (or viceversa)!!
This is my scenario: I've got my android tablet (the asus transformer) and I have 3 accounts set up there, 2 are gmail accounts (say, account A and account B) and a third corporate account (exchange activesync, call it account C)
I used account B when I was in my last job and have a lot of business contacts there. What I want to do is to have a simple way of copying some of these business contacts over to the exchange account (account C). I also would like to copy a couple from account A (personal stuff) into account C.
Any ideas? Thanks

Have you tried to export the contacts you want from the web interface of gmail?
You can select the contacts you want and export them in CSV for outlook or in vcard. I'm not familiar with Exchange but it must have some import function in a desktop client or web interface, at least of vcard.

You know, that is exactly what I don't want to end up doing because it's a waste of time.
Fortunately I found an app in the market named Contacts Copy which did exactly what I wanted to do! The interface is a bit clunky but it does the job.

Sorry for reanimation of an old thread!
But I'm facing the same problem! Is there any progress?
I was hoping, newer android versions would implement such a (simple?) function - moving a contact from one account to another doesn't seem to be so sophisticated if one has a whole synchronisation framework at hand!
Is there any contact manager out there, providing such functionality?
Thanks!

Same problem here...
I'm struggling with the same thing - I tried Contacts Copy but it just seemed to do import and export and you needed to enter a phone number. Not sure why it needs my phone number so I didn't really trust it. Anyway, if someone has had some luck I'd appreciate the help.
Just to reiterate the issue, I have an Exchange work account (a) and a gmail account (b) on my phone. I can access my works contacts database from my phone and save contacts, but they're linked to the Exchange account. I want to be able to get them from (a) to (b) simply on my phone, rather than needing to export a CSV from Outlook and upload to Gmail.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alefsoft.copycontacts&hl=en
It does it !!
Only one thing is missing - search.
Also it joins original contact to copy in another account and can update existing.
Was sending contacts to myself by SMS/e-mail before.

Gmail / windows live

Hi!,
Just recieved my hero. Have had Windows live mail as my primare non work mail. Now that i got the Hero, do i have to switch over to the Gmail i.e in order to get the rooted access to marketplace etc etc? I know i can just forward my mails to a gmail account, but find it as a headacke to not just have things at one place.
So my question, do i need a Gmail account? Pro cons?
Thank you !
If you want to use the Market, yes, you need to have a google account.
Pros - everything is automatically backed up and linked to your account (downloaded programs, contacts, calendar etc) so if you install something that buggers the phone up and you have to hard reset, (or lose it etc.) as soon as you sign in everything is back (apart from apps but they are all listed so you can download them again immediately)
cons - none, unless you are paranoid about having your data in the cloud.
But cant i do that with my Win Live contacts as well? Just like with gmail?
Im just curious, not pro live or anything. Just annoying to keep moving everything as previous phone was WM based
When you say you know U can fwd to gmail, not sure if you mean that literally or are aware that gmail can receive/send hotmail/livemail automatically.
I set my gmail up to receive all my hotmail, so it's all in one place. I never need log in to windows live at all now.
rhedgehog,
When I log into my gmail account from my desktop, is there a list of android apps I have paid for? or downloaded?
Just import everything into Gmail.
when logged in to gmeil on your pc, go to settings and select import
follow the instructions and it will import your mail, contacts and everything.
then in settings, you add a signature telling eveyone that you are changing to your Gmail account and that they should email [email protected] from now on.
then a month or two down the line, just don't bother logging in to hotmail any more.
If you do want to keep hotmail going, then you can get google to log in for you and get all your emails....
Thank you for you replies. Just did as u adviced, lets go gmail now
OK, I transferred all my contacts etc to gmail, startet to use that instead. NOW, what really bumps me is that every contact i add on the phone, dont come on the gmail account. Neither does the group editing i do on gmail, show on the phone.
Any ideas ?
When you are creating the contacts on the phone, you are selecting to create them on google aren't you?
it's the very firts option after you enter their name....Contact type.
set this to google.
if you've already created some as Phone, just delete them and create them again as google type.
don;t use groups myself, so can;t help you on that...though i'm sure someone will be along shortly who can.
Yeah, all are google contacts. Got it to work today (i think), just pulled everyone into a group. Looks so. But on the other hand, is there a easy way of seeing how many contacts i have on the hero ? so i actually can be sure.
on the groups tab, press menu and then select sync groups.
each contact group (google, phone, exchange etc) will have the number of contacts next to it, so if you're only using google contacts, you'll see how many are there next to the google item.
Ok, Thank you rhedgehog, you have been very helpful

[Q] ActiveSync and contacts issue [SOLVED]

I have my phone setup to sync my Outlook contacts, calendar and e-mail via ActiveSync and my Hotmail account. This appears on the phone as a Corporate Exchange account using MS servers, but in reality it is just the Hotmail cloud (no Exchange client). It works fine for me (although contact photos only sync from Outlook to phone, not vice-versa), but I have a problem with contacts I create on the phone. There is no way to assign them to an account so they end up not syncing to my Outlook, which only syncs contacts bearing the corporate symbol or that have been joined from Facebook to an existing Outlook contact. I've looked all over and not found any way to either create a contact on the phone under a specific account or to convert one after the fact. The only workaround I have found is to create a new contact in Outlook with the same name, wait until it syncs to the phone, then join it with the existing contact on the phone. This is obviously not optimal. Any ideas?
I'm looking for information on this as well.
In my case, my calendar, contacts, (tasks?) and email are all being syncronized via corporate exchange. I try to use my corporate exchange as my base point, so I would like to keep my contacts there by default.
When creating a new contact, I do not see how to designate where the contact is to be stored. I would think I would be given the option to save it under:
Exchange
Gmail
or phone.
I thought this used to be an option, but I'm not seeing it under the latest Unamed ROM.
Has this option been removed? or am did I ever have that option?
I have a suggestion but I'm not sure it's exactly what you're looking for. I don't use exchange server email so I don't know if this is what you need.
I sync all of my contacts and calendar to Outlook using MyPhoneExplorer. you can get the app for free in the market and download the program directly to your computer (do a google search to find their website to download the desktop version). If your phone is on the same (wifi) network as your computer you can even sync wirelessly. It syncs perfectly in both directions - phone to computer and vice versa.
hope this helps.
I've also heard that the Kies program works. It can be downloaded from the Samsung website.
Under sync settings, I unchecked the contacts sync for Gmail so now by default all new contacts are saved to Exchange.
Found it,
Maybe NOT synching the Gmail account, made this option available but suspect it was just buried deeper than I remember.
I thought this used to be a context option.
In Contacts
Settings (leftmost key button)
More
Settings again (bottom of list)
Save new contacts to.....
Now, what was that darn password I needed to save again....?
Oh-Yeah, Netflix....
Iqak, that did the trick. I knew I was able to do that before, but why I couldn't find it before is beyond me. Thanks.

I use to use MPE on my Captivate and it was a bit of a pain. I also had issues with it losing contacts and/or scrambling them up. Using ActiveSync with Outlook is the best way and thanks to Iqak I have it working as it should.

GMAIL and MS Exchange simultaneously sync

Hello guys,
I have a common quesiton about synchronising my gmail and Exchange (work) account with my HTC Desire HD Android Version 2.3.5
At the moment I synchronise my gmail accoutn with mail, calender, tasks and phone directory.
For future use I want to synchronise with Exchange from work, even the same functions like gmail.
For gmail I use the given gmail-mail program which is implemented with Android.
For Exchange I'd like to use the "Mail" function which is also a standard tool from Android.
My question:
1. I've seen that there is the possibility to show or not show different calenders, phone books etc. When I creat the Exchange additionally to the gmail account, is there a complete new calender built with the Exchange rules or does it use my gmail calender? The same for phone directory.
I want to avoid that the two accounts will be fully mashed in the future. So, if I quit my workplace I want to delete the Exchange account and all work information will be lost but not my personal gmail account, settings and personal data like calender, phone directory etc.
2. Is the Exchange completely separated to the gmail account?
I'm a littel bit frightend to configure the Exchange accoutn because I don' want to mix up the two accounts.
I hope I wrote it in a understandable way and not redundant to an existing article.
Thanks a lot and regards
The email app and the gmail app are different, are independent one of the other. You'll have no problem, nor with the contacts.

[SOLVED!] Running ICS Googlefree (at least Contacts and Calendar)

I just updated my Razor to 672.180.41.XT910.Retail.en.EU via OTA update.
ICS is quite nice.
I experienced some minor problems (peakfinder started to act sluggish and grabatron is not anymore fluid as before, but I can live without them!)
... actually the enhancement on Wify is relevant and it seems its the new platform, at least up to JB!
Actually a much bigger problem arised for me!
With GB I was able to keep my phone contacts and calendar synced with outlook without having to use the cloud (gmail).
I installed Motorola PIM sync app and using Motocast USB I succesfully synced outlook's contacts to the Razor creating a new account (Outlook Contacts) were I could easily add new contacts also directly from the phone and sync them back to outlook using the excellent MyPhoneExplorer.
Motocast USB is needed just for the first time (it creates the Motocast USB Outlook Contacts account), then I preferred using MPE as it allows you to sync also calendar, toDos, notes, sms and calls with my Pc locally (no cloud things!).
Keep in mind that while there are also other solutions, the Motocast USB account creation is the only one that let you add to it new contacts from the phone using the default contact app.
Strangely the default contacts app doesn't let you add new contacts to the phone account.
Using instead the standard gmail account without syncing it was not an option as I experienced it syncing with the cloud even if not told to!
With ICS I replicated all the process to sync googlefree but, while the process could be replicated ...wait! I'm not anymore able to add new contacts to the Motocast USB account from the phone!
Actually the Outlook contacts account is created, but I can't select it as an option to add contacts to it from the 'contacts' app.
.... this is the problem!
I'm also looking for solutions using alternative contact apps which could work on Motocast USB account, but, as the new ICS contact application is nice (finally I can search in all of the contact's fields!) I'd like to use it.
Anyone has a solution or an alternative working contact app?
'use gmail' answers not accepted! I didn't open this thread to discuss the opportunity of using gmail !
Solution: use go contact ex!
I just want to share the solution I found to my problem.
Actually I had to resign to the fact that it seems that the standard ICS contacts app doesn't let you add contacts to accounts other than the google one:
- Phone account (not visible from 'account manager' but actually is were Mobile Phone Explorer can add your contacts as an option instead of Google account). This was not possible either with GB
- Motocast USB account (still visible from account manager, but with ICS it's not possible anymore to add contact to it).
What did I do?
1) Deleted Motocast USB account (its now useless for my purposes)
2) Synced Outlook contact with the Razr stating that I wanted to add the contacts to the 'phone' account (not google/gmail)
3) Use Go contact ex to manage my contacs and specified in the options just to use 'phone' contacts and add contact to it (they had been synced to Outlook with no issues!)
This is not the kind of solution I preferred as I had to install an additional app, but, at least I succeeded in keeping my personal data away from the cloud (at least having the illusion of succeeding in it )

Making the switch from Android to WP8 Lumia

Well I placed my order for my Lumia today! I am anxious to get it and take it for a spin. As a a previous HTC One X user I am curious if there are any tips for making the switch anyone could provide.

Yep, the only thing I would recommend, is to take a few minutes, or hours to arrange your contacts in your live account:
1. Delete contacts that you don't know
2.- Merge repeated contacts so ther is one contact with full information instead of multiple.
3.- Find on Internet how merge Facebook Calendar events on your live calendar (Very useful for events, and birthdays)
4.- If necessary, add manually, or via Office Outllok your current phone contacts to your live contacts. (Use outlook Connector to add your live account to Outlook, and edit your contacts from there, it much more easy and fast)
5.- If you do all the above steps you wont have to ever think about syncing or backing up contactas ever.
6.- If you add a Coporate Exchange account, contacts wont be merged or displayed on your contacts( that's cool, because most of the time, you dont even know that well of the people on your job) but if you have to write an email for example, you will be able to use your corporate adress book.
7.- If you want to add birthdays of people in your contacts list, don't make it through calendar, make it in the contact itself, so when you are reminded of an event or birthday you can write on facebook wall or text, or call directly from the calendar app.
Once you do that, it is really impressive how WP merge all your contacts from your different services ex: live, facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc, The very few contacts that aren't merged because for example you use nicknames or name abbreviations yo can merge with no hassle inside each contact.
If you do this, you are prepared for the best experience ever, because on the case of phone lost, or formatting or new phone you just input your live credentials and vualá you have your contacts, and calendar synced right away.
Besides that, you only have to find your favorites apps, taking in to you account that for example, facebook and twitter are already embedded in the operating system so they are not necessary.
Welcome to Windows Phone, it is an amazing experience
Excellent thanks!

These are good suggestions but probably not required.
When you add different accounts such as Hotmail, multiple Google accounts, Facebook etc, the contacts will all be merged if they share the same name. If not, you can still manually merge them on the phone. None of the information on the corresponding services is changed - only the way it is displayed on your phone. You can also un-merge certain contacts if you want to. You can also choose what contacts you want to see on the People hub - so for instance, you can turn off your Outlook (work) contacts.
The same is true for the calendars - you can choose which calendars to sync and which ones to show in the Calendar app.
I don't see a need to go through organizing everything online - can be a pain if you have hundreds of contacts.
In case of a lost phone, you still have all the data - just spread around on different services and it will be a breeze to set it up again.
Case in point: I have Hotmail, three Google accounts, Facebook and work email account set-up. Took me less than 5 mins to organize everything on the phone. I turned off Facebook and work email on my People hub - I don't want to see all those contacts.
Anybody else - if you have a different experience, please speak up. But I assure you syncing multiple contacts and calendars is a breeze.
