[Q]Can not transfer files to device via USB - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My USB is behaving really wierd.
If I use USB debug my device is not recognized at al by my computer. With USB debug unchecked it's recognized and I can view and delete files but not transfer any new one. Transfer just results in a timeout saying "device disconnected".
This applies to both the internal and external card.
Tired different cables, different computers and operative systems.
Please help, tired of transfer files via keys air all the time :/

Hey,
when u have the Debugging mode activated and want to see it on PC, u have to hit the notification, which appears when u connect it.
Then press connect USB and it should appear on PC
When u don't use this mode it went in an "Kies-mode" which PC directly recognize.
Or when u go to settings>Wireless etc>USB and press here "Use USB as Masstorage" it's the same like when u press activate on notification while debuggin mode.
Hope I helped a bit ...

Well don't mean to be rude but ofc i connect USB storage when I plug it in. When in USB debugging mode, the device is not even accessable but in kies mode, its accessable but I can't transfer any files to it :/

Transfer a small file see if that times out .

I know this is not a solution to your problem, but I recommend transferring files over wifi (NOT KIES AIR) which, to me, is much more simpler and better way.
Here is how:
first install free "SwiFTP FTP Server" application from Market
install it and enter desired username and password. Enable wifi and start application.
On your computer or laptop, install some FTP client (I recommend "Filezilla").
Enter user information you previously configured on your smartphone, connect and voila! You know have access to all of your smartphone's files and folders.
Like I said, for me, this is much better and simpler way of transferring files than using USB cable. Give it a try and see.

Bionix fusion can't mount pc?!

I'm trying on my work comp and it's says un known hardware... Is it fusion?. Im on mass storage
Vibrant Bionix
running fusion here..
This has happened only on my work computer and not my laptop at home.
go to settings / applications / development and turn off USB debugging. Then go to USB settings and set it to ASk On connection. Turn USB Debugging back on.
Now when you plug in it is gonna ask you how you want to connect. I believe you select mass storage and your computer should recognize. Then you mount your SD to your computer.
This is what I did to get it to connect to my work computer. Afterwards i reverted my settings back to normal and my phone connects to my laptop.
Hope that works.
your pc is probably not able to download the drivers....

You nailed it. Thanks man. Anyway around it?.. The net is locked down pretty tight so probably not huh?
Vibrant Bionix
Download the drivers from another pc and attach it via a usb storage drive and transfer it to your pc and install. (windows should already have the drivers pre-installed for USB drives).

If you are on Windows: Samsung drivers installed?
Did you try different USB port?
Is USB debugging enabled? Settings->Applications->Development
What are the USB settings on the phone? Settings->Applications->USB settings
Mass storage mode doesn't work for me on Win 7 x64 I just use the media player setting and it works the same way as mass storage should.
It works for me just fine. One time it did do the flickering USB icon thing, but that turned out to be because the cable that I was using was going bad. It sounds like this may be what's going on in your case?
I clipped this from a post I made a few months ago...

For those of you having a problem with Windows 7 recognizing your Vibrant ... here is how I fixed it on my system.
*Note: You do not need to load any special USB drivers for your phone to be recognized in Mass Storage mode in Windows 7.
*Warning: You follow these instructions at your own risk ... no screaming at me if you try it and something gets screwed up!
1) Navigate your way into the Device Manager / Universal Serial Bus Controller
2) Uninstall the device(s) "USB Root Hub" (My system had 2 listed)
3) You will lose mouse and keyboard control (because you just removed the USB Hubs)
4) Reset your PC and allow Windows to boot normally.
5) Go back to the device manager and wait for all of the "!" marks to go away as windows re-installs the USB Hubs and reinitializes all of your devices.
6) Make sure your Vibrant is in mass storage mode and has USB debugging OFF
7) Plug in your Vibrant via the USB cable and be amazed as windows recognizes your device and assigns the drive letters. After you select the mount option on your phone you will have normal access via windows explorer.
Hope this helps some of you out there !!!

Thanks for that I tried, but I still cant get anything to work!!
So frustrating.....whats wrong with this?

USB issue Kies starts, but not recognised

When I plug USB cable in my win64 device manager recognises the usb connection as "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device"
Kies automatically starts.
but Kies does not does not connect to my phone
nor does my phone show in "My computer"
If I enter storage mode then I can access SD card and external card.
of significant note is I recently did a full format and installed Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom (but I can't post there due to newb restrictions).
I have tried to reinstall drivers using Kies but that hasn't worked.
I have deleted the drivers from PC using device manager and allowed windows to reinstall them.
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you
I get no error messages
I've tried connecting with debug mode... it installs drivers but still computer doesn't recognise phone.
Still phone appears connected in device manager.
You have to close all open programs on your phone and return it to the home page. Until you do this your phone will not connect. You should then see a Usb Plug on your screen. It should then say Initializing and then connected. Then you should see it in My Computer and get into you phones files though there too.
Hope this Helps......
Thanks.. but I know about that and it isn't that.. also.. since installing LiteningRom this has not been necessary... but good call thank you.
I've tried to connect on a different computer and was unable to connect to that.. so possibly an issue with the phone?
Could it be that you have activated the "USB debugging" mode under settings->applications->development?
So I install Cognition S2 ROM and it works fine!

Nope not that.. I had turned debugging USB on and off a number of times in the hope it would do something.. but nope
Just to test this out...
I reinstall Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom and once again I cannot connect to my computer...
I will remove this rom, factory rest and install something else
I have noticed.. 2 extra drives appear in "my Computer"... I can't access them but they appear when I plug in my phone.. and disappear when I remove it
so clearly my external and internal cards phone SD cards are not being recognised correctly when using Check's Dark Knight Edition Rom...
any ideas?
and yes I have removed, deleted drivers numerous times... installed via Kies installed via auto Windows
ok... installed Cognition S2 ROM and connected to computer... it the phone says MPT - initialisation then MPT- connection it didn't say this with dark rom!
For anyone else having this issue, it seems to be related to MTP. MTP is present in cognition, and removed from Check's rom, you can easily add this back in to make it work.
I've done a search for this with the intention of reinstalling it..
but I cannot find anything... maybe my search is off or I'm not using the correct keyword.. any help here would be great.
Also.. as this seems to be removed from a number of ROMs I have a further question.. what is the alternative?
Thanks

Thanks.. but still what do ppl use to back up their phones? if they haven't got this installed?
Dizzee, I had the exact same problem as yours and solved it my removing "USB debugging" in settings, as Alchemius mentioned previously. Can you double check you've done this.

Try Multi Mount SD-Card from Google Play Market
I'm not running sony ICS, so I'm not sure how different it is from GB.
In GB I go to settings> sony ericsson.
There you can change mtp or msc connection, auto connect etc

No, it hasn't. You can still decide how to connect to the PC. But you can't (even on Gingerbread) decide not to connect to it.

On stock ICS ROM, there is no option to disable auto connect in msc. On GB we had that option.
You're right, I forgot that. My mistake!
I think you can Disable it from windows control panel, on Autoplay option i guess.

Found out where the option is hiding for Linux users:
Settings -> Xperia(TM) -> Connectivity -> USB connection mode -> change to MSC for use in Linux
No solution for the other problem though

I do not understand what people here are talking about.
Our phones can be connected to the PC in two ways. Say mode A and mode B.
In GB, there was an option saying "Auto Connect in Mode A [Y/N]". If it was set to yes, it would connect to mode A everytime plugged in to PC.
Else it would connect to Mode B.
In ICS, System Settings... Xperia... Conectivity, you can choose between the Connectivity mode (either A or B).
If it is in A mode, the SD card is UNMOUNTED from the phone and is mounted for the use of PC solely.
In mode B, to the contrary, the SD card is NOT UNMOUNTED from the phone, and still can be used on the PC. That is, the SD card can be simultaneously accessed by the PC and the hand held device.
Correct me if I am wrong.

I thought it worked this way, too. But then I tested it, and it's not like that.
In GB, you can choos to connect in MTP or MSC. If you choose MSC, you can then choose if you want to activate the "autoconnect in MSC" feature. If this feature is allowed, when you plug your phone in the PC your memory card will be connected in MSC mode. If this feature is not allowed, when you plug your phone your memory card will not be mounted in the PC. Not in MSC, nor in MTP. You'll just use your PC to charge the phone, let's say that.
Since this feature doesn't exist on ICS, when you plug your phone you're forced to mount your memory card.

In my case: I need to select MSC mode, because MTP mode is not supported in Linux.
Not really sure about the others though

How to connect to PC without opening USB Mass Storage??

So here is the deal - earlier I could connect my SGS2 to PC with USB Debbuging turned on, and nothing poped up and I could use storage and sd card on PC and at the same time on the phone, like open it with some file explorer, and install apps when still connected to PC... Sound awesome, because now there is this - When I am in USB debbuging and connected to PC, it cant find storages, so I have to disable debugging, and there pops up this USB Mass Storage when i connect the cable. When it is connected to PC, I cant access files on the phone in that moment.... So what is wrong??
Will be pleased for all suggestions..
Thanks

When you connect to computer, dont do it in Debugging mode. If you change it windows (forcing MTP) dont like that. So it will require you to remove phone and reboot. But try the following also
delete all old drivers and remove them in registry. (if needed check the below link)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882942
Still not working go to device manger "type it in start"
Go to View
Select Hidden Driver
Go To Non_Plug and Play Drivers
Right Click on Hardware Policy Driver
Go To Driver Tab,
Stop this device
and Disable it
Restart Windows ( unplug phone first, disable network card also)
Disable WiFi or network card, (double tap)
Plug in Phone
Allow windows to load the drivers on your phone.
(don't stop this at all)
Look for phone.
Later you can add updated drivers if you would like. Remember windows keeps all old drivers, even if its jacked up. PnP will still run.
This works on Vista and above. haven't tested it on XP.
IMPORTANT
U must re-enable the change to the device manager after this, or each time you reboot it will reload the drivers.
