[**SOLVED**] 2.3.12 REenable ad hoc wifi networks under ICS - wpa_supplicant - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

ICS on the Prime, for many, took a step back and now claims "ad hoc networks are not supported". So, many of us who have been tethering the last few weeks via a tethering app now cannot as ICS is seeing the network as ad hoc and is now reporting that is not supported. I personally used wireless tether under Honeycomb every single day on my Prime. Now, for me, and many, we cannot. I have a whole growing thread in the general area and it really seems this is the root of the issue for those of us that do not have built in wifi hot spots and use a tether app.
So, is this something a dev can sort out? How to get back ad hoc network support under ICS on the Prime? I have seen topics on it in google like this one, but this "fix" did not work.
(BTW - if a mod thinks this is not in the right place and wants to move it to the General thread, please just delete this as there is already a thread there, but a help request in the dev area seemed logical. If not, sorry.)
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IT HAS BEEN SOLVED 2.3.12
Based on a post I read the other day, and that I was asked to test today, I decided to try 1 more time and it worked!! But not how I expected. I tried 3 tests... the final one worked!!
So, here is the process:
1. root is required AND make sure you have your file system app (like Root Explorer) set to make files R/W so you can edit/rename/set permissions
2. turn off wifi
3. go into system/bin and rename wpa_supplicant2 to wpa_supplicant2.bak - that's right folks.. it is NOT wpa_supplicant but wpa_supplicant2 that is running the show
3. download the wpa_supplicant file found here post #24 in my other thread
4. unzip it
5. rename it wpa_supplicant2 NOT wpa_supplicant
6. move it to system/bin and paste it
7. set permissions to xxx, x, xxx (columns) - see more details below if confused
8. go back and start up wifi
9. turn on wifi analyzer and you will see (*)AndroidTether with no red Ad Hoc notation!!
10. click to connect
11. surf and tether away!!
No rebooting needed, it is instant
I am using the good old original Wireless tether 2.0.7 app I always used! None of those beta releases and picking settings and blah blah
Yes, I was able to connect right back to my local wifi with no issues as well!
PLEASE hit the thanks button, I worked long and hard on trying to get this to work
#7 details if you don't understand permissions settings
When you set permissions (long press the file) a pop-up opens and it shows 3 columns with 3 checkboxes in each. Each "x" is to be checked
Read...Write...Execute
x..........x..........x
x......................x

This is really a super simple fix for rooted devices. Just search the internet for "ad-hoc" and "wpa_supplicant" and you should be able to figure the rest out pretty easily. However, that said, wpa_supplicant form a previous version of Android (Honeycomb, Gingerbread, etc) might not work.

Yep, look in my post above. I did find one, I did try it, it did not work. The wpa_supplicant I used had no affect. I think this is why we need a dev to square it away and with details on how to install for other users.

i think it would be better for u to try and find a dev in irc vs posting a thread in development section when it is more a question or request.

While I understand that it's easier to just talk to a dev over IRC, I really hope a working solution can be released here soon.

LOL ahh the days or IRC. He means there is an IRC (which I believe stands for Internet Relay Chat?) group/page that you can go to and actually talk (like a chat room I suppose) at that above site. You might get more response from them there. I might pop on there later actually.

I think enabling ad hoc connection is part of the issue. Thing is, the 3rd. party app we used called Wireless Tether is really an Infrastructure tethering method. It worked fine on honeycomb. We know Honeycomb and ICS doesn't support Ad hoc connections. Once we updated to ICS, it changed the way the connection is viewed. Now ICS tells us its an ad hoc connection when its really not. If it were ad hoc, then honeycomb would've never allowed us to connect also.
Since the app is viewed as the wrong connection, ad hoc, its not allowing connection or even network seen in normal settings. Wifi Analyzer can see the network though and also says it ad hoc now. but when you try to connect it will say This connection isn't supported by Android yet.
I got BT PAN method of tethering to work buts its a much slower connection speed. it'll do in the meantime, if needed but the wifi tethering method worked the best n easiest. Seems like phones with built in hotspots feature seem to work along with HTC phones. my phone is Atrix4g and I'm not sure what kind the OP has. Methods that are working for others on their Samsung or HTC phones don't seem to work on ours.

Concisely explained... thanks
(For the record, I use a rooted OG Droid running a simple Pete's ROM - but the issue is pervasive across many many brands)

Actually, the Honeycomb used on the Transformer Prime is perfectly capable of connecting to ad-hoc networks.

interesting. I knew ICS didn't support it and had just read that it started with HC. I never tried my barnacle app, ad hoc, on honeycomb. I always used my wireless tether app.
I wonder why there were several people reporting on Google Android open source page that ad hoc connection wasn't being allowed period. Or why isn't Google/Android allowing this feature across the board.
I have a feeling we will get another update soon to smooth out the initial ICS bugs.

Hey demandarin I did try Barnacle many times... no dice
Anyway, here is some more useful info
I just tried 3 wpa_supplicant files I found for other phones/tablets. None worked. All allowed for wifi fine, none accepted ad hoc.
I have the swap steps down good enough now and know and understand the setup and permissions and such, I feel confident now in the processes to try any wpa_supplicant file. You find one, I have not tried it, I will... but I doubt it will work for 2 reasons
1. it is not specific to our tablet and ICS software
2. we have 2 wpa_supplicant files - that is right 2 - not just 1 so there may be some interdependency as NO thread/forum/blog/post has ever mentioned 2 wpa files
I am sure a dev would know this, but putting it out there that I have tried swapping wpa files to no avail

☞[READ ME 1st] ☆.☆.☆ If YOU DID NOT CREATE "it" THEN IT DOESN'T BELONG IN DEVELOPMENT
A nice sticky at the top of the Dev section where this was first posted. Moved to Q&A

Well, is there anything new to this topic? I think not only a few people are depending on it.

Nothing new. I'm still working on it & emailing devs that fixed the issue in HC before Asus finally fixed it (see my other thread about that for a post I made yesterday)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21417076&postcount=281
Be rest assured... this issue affects more than just "a few people". I've seen it mentioned on other forums as well. I also suspect it will get worked out in time - but not fast enough for some if us.

Me too. I want my (UK) Asus Prime to connect to Joikuspot
I have ICS and want to use the ad hoc connection on my phone running Joikuspot.
Any news ?

Guys, wireless tether works just fine on the tp with ics if you use version 2.0.7 instead of the current version. I've been tethering my thunderbolt to my tp every day since I got it in Dec 22 with both ics and honeycomb.

I seriously wish people would research the true issue before just posting up that "it works"... there is a whole HUGE thread that explains why it does not AND IF IT DOES why it does work for you and not others.
Not only that... there are whole trial and error tests with ALL versions of Wireless tether - including all beta versions.

Wanna know why people leave XDA? Because when they post things that definitely DO work for them and others, people immediately jump down their throat and try to make them feel like idiots. I have no idea why 2.0.7 works for me and several friends that own both primes and tbolts but it does. Period.

My man.. your post added nothing. Telling us tether worked for you? I could have told you it would work for you! IF, IF, IF you just did a little research into the other thread... you would understand why it does. But you didn't, you just blindly posted up that it worked.. confusing the issue for people like you that do not research the issue and understand what is going on.

[Q] What are the best tweaks?

I am about to receive my new archos 101 later this week. I am reading the forums, and so far i have gathered i will need to put android 2.2 on it, and also the android market. what other tweaks should i do when i get it? Apps i need to know about? This will be the first android i have owned so i do not know where to begin.
If there is a thread that addresses this question, please point me in the right direction. my search didn't come up with much as to a list of things that are essential to getting the most out of the archos 101. thanks!

I had my archos 101 since November 2010 and I was never disappointed with it.
Its a matter of how you use your device.

Agreed. I've been very happy with my 101. And I tried several popular alternatives before this. Like the Viewsonic, Nook color, Huewii/Ideos S7, and some knock off chinese clone. The 101 beats them all.
thanks :-D
any news on what i need to do once it is out of the box? On my touch pro 2 it took me forever to realize that the first thing to do was flash a custom rom and other tweaks like OC'ing it. any thing i should do to the archos 101?
well...plug it in and charge it...
If you want root and ability to OC, etc...I think you need to jump down to the UrkDroid threads. I'm very happy with stock and hoping for some way to root it. If you don't upgrade the stock I think z4root works though...as well as some additional codecs, but then you are on Eclair. Upgrade brings Froyo. Can't give you much advice beyond that...just load the market apk and start installing stuff.

Check out this thread over on forums archos fans .com . I found a lot of good tips here. (i dont have enough post yet to post an external link.) but under the top thread gen 8 devices there is a post titled newbie tips, and some general set up info.
Something that i have done to really help is upgrade to froyo, then go into the power management and set it to over drive. yes i kills the battery faster, but it seems more responsive. also a new launcher program helps too. i am currently using one called zeam.
I'd say get market, a launcher (adw, launcherpro, zeam) and if you are comfortable with linux, the urukdroid hack. i was a little disappointed with the laginess of my 70 at first, mostly the media scanning but the SDE and Uruk make me jealous of no tablet.
got it today, this thing is nice. i am sitll getting used to android though. I cant get it to access my windows shares though, i input my username/password correctly and it cannot connect...
also, how do i get the codecs on here? must i really pay for them?

Can't help ya with the shares, but you could try removing security from them for a bit and make sure you can connect. That's just basic troubleshooting.
With regards to codecs, probably not. It comes default with a lot of stuff and I can play almost every video/audio file I have. Only a few needed to be converted. Very few statistically speaking. I think the ones you buy are very specific. So try what you have first.
I've not had to download any codecs. The handfull of videos I have watched worked fine.
Zeam Launcher is a must for me. Fastest Launcher I have seen. Love it so much I put it on my Droid X and my wifes Droid2.
Market and Appbrain is a must as is Flash 10.1. Don't forget to do the "Market Fix" to get all the market apps to show up. Forget the stock keyboard as its a laggy POS. Swype does not work at all but Slideit works great. Well worth the price for the amount of hair you will rip from your head trying to get the stock keyboard to register your inputs.
thanks guys! i will look for the market fix soon as i have noticed a few apps are missing. including zeam.
Also, i cannot figure out how to tether this thing to my wm6.5 tilt 2.
i have always been able to tether windows machines, and i can even make a wireless network with it. however, the archos doesnt find my wireless router network, and when i connect it through usb or bluetooth it asks me for APN and username/password which i have no idea what they are.
any ideas?

[Q] Atrix Queries

Hi All,
I have a few Atrix specific queries.
It might sound dumb but i really want to know.
1. Whats the actual difference between Atrix and Atrix 4G.
2. Tegra 2 - HP H.264 Video playback Issue , can it ever play HP H264 videos via some software update or 3rd party player. Link
3. Android 2.2 supports sharing mobile internet on a wifi network by setting the mobile as a wireless router or hotspot , does this feature work out of the box on atrix.
4. Is there a hardware required to be present on the phone for NFC or when motorola releases the Android 2.3 update , NFC will work on the atrix as 2.3 enables NFC on the phones.
I really liked this phone a lot but with so many unanswered questions cant make up my mind.
Will keep posting my queries here.
Thanks.

There is no difference between Atrix and Atrix 4G, Atrix is just the European version. Tethering out of the box will get you charged by Att, you want to root to avoid that. And the Atrix does not have a NFC chip.

If you jus start using the tethering than Att will add a tethering package to your bill. You want to root to get PDAnet which gives free tethering.

I think that what he means, is that if you go into the phone and enable/set up the tethering option, ATT will know this and switch you to the data plan with tethering.
This can be avoided by rooting the phone - which if you have access to a pc is extremely simple and can be done in basically a one-click process.

Any tethering app that doesn't let Att find out about your tethering.
I don't get what's the big deal with NFC. For one, the technology is hardly even used in the US currently... and even if it was, it'd still probably be few and far between. It's about as big of a perk to me as a gyroscope (Ha).... which isn't much of one at all.

Well.... if you have been following the iPhone world, think of rooting as jailbreaking. In short, it basically gives you access to and control of every folder on the phone's internal storage (or to a certain extent). Allows you to modify things such as the launcher used, themes, hopefully in time the bootloader, etc...

Rooting your phone will void the warranty if you leave it there, but the process is reversible and it is fairly easy to unroot and cover your tracks.
Rooting comes from Unix terms. Rooting gives you root access by making you the administrator/superuser.
The h.264 performance should be improved by a software update that is planned for the future. Heard that form a buddy with some information on such deals. It was known that the Atrix would release without the ability to do 1080p and such files but that a software release would unlock the native support from the chip.

3) So far, all of them load for me but the graphics may not be sized appropriately. Words With Friends is a good example.
After reading all the issues faced by so many users , i am wondering if everyone is facing these issues on there atrix or only some.
Is it after rooting or on the stock phone itself.
How can motorola release a phone with so many bugs was there testing team sleeping or what.
Users complaining about phone screen freezes after alarm snooze , this is ridiculous
Music player , thats the most basic functionalty.
Motorola should have delayed the release if they already knew about these issues.
I am still wondering if everyone is facing all these issues on there atrix or is it that some handsets are buggy ?
I am having almost none of the issues so far. Only one I noticed is the camera is not great and can take bluish photos if the led is the main light source.

Where's My Water? Where's My Message Going?

So the latest update for the Disney game Where's My Water? Has started rolling out and I know that its getting alot of negative points for this update for two reasons:
1. They're charging for the additional levels ontop of the inital app charge. Now I know we're not gonna change that part but they are taking the piss quite a bit there. But more importantly...
2. The update allows full WAP message access (or words to the same effect) to my knowlede Disney is justifying it because of the app pirchase but that just doesn't make sense. Now I'm not particularly good and getting into app coding to find out what they're actually getting. So here's my propisition, can someone figure out why they need this permission. I love this little game I know its made by Disney etc. but its well built and fun I just want to know why they've decided they need this info.
Cheers all

I'm a developer on Where's My Water, though my focus is more on the native C++ side and not on platform specifics. I'm not 100% sure why we have WAP message access as a permission. It may be required by one of the in app billing libraries for one of the markets the app is published on. I'll look into it and get back to you. I can promise you it's for no malicious purpose. If it turns out we don't need it, we will remove it in the next update. Thanks for pointing it out.
Thanks for the quick response. Thats brilliant news its moments like this that show what the xda community can do connecting users and developers. Please keep us all posted with the progress you make and thanks again for the response.

Agreed I think the WAP is basically internet access as we can't play offline. Well I can't

Hey everyone,
I looked into the WAP push issue and it turns out we don't need that. It must have snuck in as we have been rapidly iterating on the game and it seems to have just been overlooked. We have an update running through test right now which removes the WAP push requirement. Once again, we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
@thedan55 - I will look into this. The game should not require an internet connection to run.

brilliant, thanks!
Compatibility
Hi all,
There's a third issue with this update, and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it's likely to be related to the WAP permissions. Since the update, the game is now shown as incompatible with many tablet devices, including my Acer Iconia A100... I'm assuming WAP permissions wouldn't be available on Wifi only tablets.
To give full details, I bought the game over Christmas and had played through it all with no bother on my tablet. Yesterday I got the update on my phone, and when it didn't come through on the tablet I went to My Apps within the market, selected "where's my water" and got the "this app is incompatible with your device" message. Looking through the recent reviews, many tablet owners are in the same position.
Perhaps one of the developers could tell us if removal of WAP permissions will fix this, or if they're working on another way to fix it? It's very disappointing to pay for a game and then be unable to get the updated levels, especially when the game is so good! It's just not the same on the small phone screen. I would gladly pay for Cranky if I could get him on my tablet...
In case it helps at all, I should add that the free version, which I see also requires WAP permissions, has always been shown as incompatible with my tablet... I had to try it on the phone and was then able to use the tablet when I bought the full version.
Any info would be much appreciated.
I believe WAP intrinsically requires hardware telephony, so removing it should open it back up to you. We have found the bug you are referring to and will make sure to fix in the forthcoming update. Once again, we apologize for this mistake!
That's a brilliant response thank you for solving that problem for us all looking forward to the next update. Keep up the work because it really is a brilliant innovative game
Alk3ovation - great news, and thanks very much for taking the time to respond.
Heads up everyone, the update should be live. WAP push is removed and the game should now be playable on tablets again! Thanks!
Thank you!

Thanks, I've updated today immediately after seeing that WAP permissions were removed. I also changed my review back to the well deserved 5 starts. And I learned a new expression: "You three-ducked it!"
Thanks
Yes, thanks very much! I can confirm it's now updating fine on my Iconia tab, and Cranky got unlocked instantly when I paid for him.
Multiple Devices
Actually - I've just run into what may be a bug with using this update/purchase on multiple devices.
As above, I was able to buy Cranky no problem on my tablet. I just tried to get into those levels on my phone as well, and they were still showing as locked. When I tried to open them I kept getting "Your order is processing" followed by "An error occured".
I got round it by using the 'Clear Data' option from Manage Applications, which I didn't mind doing since I'd only played a couple of levels of Swampy on my phone - after that the new levels showed as unlocked immediately next time I opened the game.
Like I said, no biggie for me, but just letting you know in case it is a reproducible bug (I think I've seen a few other people mention the 'order processing' thing in reviews), since I'm sure some people will have played right through the game on their second device and won't want to lose all their progress.
Thats some brilliant news updated same soon as i heard gonna go get the extra levels now thanks again for all year you've done

[Q] AT&T HTC One: CW Tether / PDANet+ streaming video w/o AT&T being aware?

I searched and found nothing for exactly what I'm looking for. Apologies if there is and I didn't find it.
I've tried these two programs...
- ClockWork Tether
- PDANet+
They work great... except when I try to stream from Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/Etc...
I'm looking for a way to stream videos through these major streaming sites with my AT&T HTC One without AT&T knowing I'm tethering to a laptop or a desktop.
I've tried both of these and found I could browse the web just fine... but when I hit Netflix, for example, it tells me I don't meet the requirements for the stream... which is related to how Tether/PDANet+ proxy the connection... I'm guessing.
The site doesn't see the laptop/computer as a viable streaming platform.
Has anyone ever gotten either of these, or a 3rd app, to work by streaming content but at the same time hiding from AT&T's tether detectors?
HTC One
Cyanogen MOD 10.1
Any help or a firm "THIS CAN'T BE DONE" would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Please move this to the Q&A section.
I'm an idiot.
Thanks.

Root Tether

I realize there are multiple threads on this. But unless I'm blind - which I may be - I can't find a final solution.
I can not tether on my rooted DNA. WiFi Tether does not work. I have tried multiple versions. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the MSSClamping option is not available. Even still, it won't start.
I've tried 1-Click - that says it requires a subscription.
I've tried FoxFi. That sets up some VPN tunnel then doesn't start.
Any leads for a successful solution?
I have several rooted Roms posted with native tethering enabled, since most 3rd party apps no longer work on kit Kat.
So, the best solution, which works, is to run a Rom with native tethering enabled for all users or modify the Rom you're running to do the same.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm in an area cursed with the Verizon Trolling of custom ROMs. Anything other than Stock Root results in SMS sending issues.
I'm not a programmer by any stretch, but have been modifying phones for a while based on all of you wizards' work. Is modifying the current ROM a "simple" task?
A little research has shown there is an "entitlement hack" for other phones. Does that hack exist for the DNA?
Still searching...

Just a stab in the dark fur you but.. I would think that sms/mms problems would be from your setup(apn, system selection etc.) and if big brother is tagging you I suggest a firewall.. That said were all pretty much on or used Verizon /Santods rom my tether works great..
Im going to start a thread about every ones ideas..

Thanks a bunch. You may find a thread of mine buried deep on here somewhere about this problem back in Feb/March. I had just gotten my DNA and ended up with the issue of not being able to send. It became a general consensus that VZW was testing some sort of blacklisting of custom ROMs in certain areas. I've not heard of a solution yet. I've tried multiple ROMs, all with the same outcome.
I look forward to your thread and whatever brainstorming comes from it.
Thanks!

Are you saying that "Tether hacked for all users" on the NuSenseSIX ROM will allow me to use what appears to be native tethering... and I won't be charged an additional fee from my wireless carrier?
Thanks for all of your hard work.

That's correct.
Any love on this? Someone point me in the right direction to get sms working on a ROM other than stock?
