[Q] USB storage damaged - recovery help - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

had the "USB storage damaged" error occur 2 days ago on my SGS2 for absolutely no reason... unfortunately, several restarts later it still doesn't work... i would like to try the windows error checking method on my phone cos i've seen that it has solved the problem for many without sacrificing stored data but unfortunately my phone has not been rooted... and not having access to my internal storage means i can't copy the files needed for rooting... or can i?
if there's an alternative rooting method not requiring access to internal storage/SD i'd really appreciate your help!
cheers

hey there,
do you usualy use your device as MTP (default) or did you give the USB mass storage mode a try?

Did try mass storage. Two storage devices are visible but neither are accessible. Figured rooting and recovery is best option if rooting is still achievable under these circumstances
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

hmmm, do you have an SD card (/external_sdcard) in your device, you could copy the stuff from your internal memory with a file browser on your device and then try a factory reset ...

I cannot see how rooting can fix a problem .Though i suppose you could root and make a nandroid backup of drive which may be blank or try mounting the drives via recovery .
Factory reset may fix but will wipe data .
jje

I do have an external SD card but it doesn't detect that either. SD card works fine in other devices. I've tried using ES file explorer but to no avail. And when i try accessing the gallery it says SD card mounted as mass storage.
Yeah i plan to root and conduct a windows error check in recovery mode cos i've seen it work for others.
Factory reset is my last resort.

Still no luck. Can anyone help please?

got the same problem...

some news after reset? Or some other update?

Managed to root and recover my most important files (photos etc). USB storage still needed to be formatted afterwards though. Will do a write up once i get home today

Flash the appropriate Cf-root kernal to root through Odin then follow below.
If you have CWM recovery, just go to mounts and storage, mount sdcard (or USB storage, whichever), copy files, reboot phone, format and recopy files back.

I am having the same issue as all of you. The only thing is, my computer can't see my phone connected to it. I have tried formatting it but it doens't allow it via the phone... I have been with my phone like this for 2 months now... I really want to get it working. The phone does not access the external at all. I am so frustrated.
Was anyone able to get this problem fixed?

Sd card help !

im having some issues. cant write, take pictures etc to memory card. i tried formatting it via sonyx10 util and when i plug it in windows the files are still there. when i try to install xRecovery says no memory card is present. im left clueless! any help ?
Try another card in the phone. If it does not work, you might have faulty phone.
Restoring the stock ROM and firmware using SEUS would be my next step, before bringing it for a repair.
unmount then mount it in settings on phone

Any ideas ?

Looking for a rom I can install via Odin . Needs to be a tar file but I cant seem to find one at the moment......any pointers very welcome.
Thanks
sr
You don't have custom recovery working to flash .zip?
Can flash stock firmware found on Intratech thread. Will lose root, but can flash CF-root kernel from Chainfire thread to get root again...... All with Odin.

Sorry
...quite new to all this. I have installed a rom on the sd disk but when I go to install zip from sd card can't see it !!
If its ok could you explain your method ....as Im a bit of a thicko !!
thanks
sr
Depending on what version of cwm 4 or 5 you have will make a slight difference but essentially these process.
Place the Rom zip on your internal sdcard not the removable external sdcard.
Navigate to flash .zip from internal sdcard in recovery. If you are changing versions if android or. 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 or flashing between different Roms, maybe best to factory reset, wipe.cache, and wipe dalvik (in advanced) from within recovery. Immediately flash ROM, and then reboot, give it a few minutes. You will lose your data etc, but will help to ensure you don't get boot loops or force closes etc

Thanks
...for the prompt reply, problem is I can only get rom onto the external sd card. Can't see a way of getting it onto the internal one !
Guess this looks like my evenings planned with the wife moaning at me!
sr
Boot up. Connect USB to PC and transfer the file.... If your still not sure if your putting it in the correct "sdcard", power off and remove extrenal sdcard.
You could also connect cable to PC in recovery, then "mount USB storage",. Transfer file to USB storage, "unmount", then flash from internal sdcard (look for the USB storage within).USB storage is just a sub directory of the internal sdcard.

Oh yeah, about the moaning. Know the feeling full well......... (good or bad

Me again..
I have the phone working but the PC will not recognise and storage on the phone which means I can't update etc. Do you have any ideas of what is needed to fix this. At the moment the only thing that I can use is Odin. I did have another rom on the sd card but cant open it.
Sorry about this !!
Steve
Have you installed Samsung Kies? You need the diverts from that installed to PC. Just remember that you need to close kies before using Odin.
Edit :You have selected connect from the phone (maybe have notification on phone status bar?)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Phew....
Managed to open another rom zip and installed, things back to normal (and before the wife gets home) !
One last question .....I install roms on the internal sd as I can never see them when installed on the external sd, guess I am missing something simple ?
Thanks for your help this afternoon

[Q] USB Storage damaged

I can't get my internal or external sd card to work anymore it keeps saying "usb damaged you may need to reformat it." Anyone have any idea of a way I could back things up before i have to format?
Should probably mentioned that CWM still recognizes it and that it happened after I flashed the v5 preview of checkrom in the I9100 section (hellraised of course) and that the issue still appears even after going to my Android backup, ICScrewD

Try hooking your external to a computer and copy all the files to another folder. Format it. Then put them back on.

i can adb pull the entire sd card right?
This happened to me but worse...
For a week or so I had a feeling my ext card was dying (backed up weekly), yesterday it stopped working. Had to reformat then use some recovery programs on Window to get the files back most of which I got back.
I thought that was the reason for my media scanning loop, but once I removed the card it still did that the rest of the day, I ended up reformatting the internal portion as well, but I moved everything to my PC before doing so.
Was able to get rid of all the junk from leftover apps/roms as well, feels smoother.
Hopefully your able to retrieve everything, good luck!!

just need to pull the android folder on the sd card, too much stuff to do manually with droid explorer
Never used Droid Explorer, I just pulled it directly using windows since it was just the USB. Going to grab it when I get home and see what Droid Explorer can do for me.
Thanks!

it can't do folders but it basically is ADB with a GUI, ended up saying screw it and wasted the Android folder and everything is back on
I had the opposite problem once. My computer would recognize storage, but the phone wouldn't. I ran a disk check and it fixed the problem.
I'm having a different issue when I plug in the USB and hit the drop down to "select to copy files to/from computer". When the computer recognizes the two SD drives, I get a popup that says there's a possible problem with my internal SD card and wants to scan it for fixes. Not sure if it's safe to let windows mess with my internal card. I can opt out of that popup and everything works fine. The question is, is it safe to let Windows scan and possible fix it?

USB Storage is damaged too, no CWM, no connect to PC
Hi,
Just rooted my phone 2 days back and today just got the USB Storage damaged in notification bar.
I cannot accessed to both internal and external in ES File Explorer and also not able to connect to my PC. I do not have CWM too.
I did have a copy of Titanium Backup for all users and system apps in my PC, is formatting the ONLY way? I am afraid that after formatting, the system files would be gone and I would not even able to restore from Titanium Backup and Samsung Service Center would charge me since I had void the warranty by rooting the phone.
Please help! :-(
Go into recovery and mount the internal and use adb or Droid explorer to get the necessary files out

I am using Quickboot to go into recovery mode, Tried the Reboot system now but still same issue. which one to select? Pardon me as I am new to rooting.
Reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
You don't have cwm installed it seems

My advice is to just flash a kernel with Odin, getting into Download mode with a jig, and then trying to pull the files off with CWM.

As per other identical posts
Recuva may recover deleted files but it will not recover if INT SD card has been formatted .

I have tried this app before. However, when I plug in my phone the app never detect my phone. I try install an app on my phone to enable usb mass storage, it keep giving me error saying unable to mount the sd card as some app is accessing it. What should I do so the recuva can detect my phone internal memory?
AFAIK you can't. That's one of the many reasons I miss the USB Mass Storage mode, under which both internal memory and sd card can be managed as ordinary USB drives.
Thanks for everyone feedback. I think the files are unable to recover back since I wipe it when reboot in recovery mode, it is equal as formatting the sd card.

You can still give it a go by removing and inserting your SD card to a card reader and plug it to your PC/Laptop. Recuva isn't designed to detect and recover files from your smart phone. Instead, it can still recover files from various types of USB or flash devices.
Good Luck otherwise.

I have the same issue. I am trying to recover deleted files from the internal storage (sdcard0) I tried recurva as well and it Windows can't detect the storage when in USB Mass Storage. It shows up as a drive but when you click it in Windows it says "Please insert disk".
If I can get the files to show up in Windows while in USB Mass Storage I can then use Recurva.. any help?
You can try Undelete from the market .
Otherwise as posted answers .

99% no.
My 2 cents...
You cannot mount as mass storage so no PC software will work.
There are things on the market but you have to pay and many probably wont work.
Think of any lost data as gone forever.
Proactively, get foldersync from play and have it schedule sdcard syncs to the cloud or even better, a home computer wirelessly

Just backup in cWM

[Q] Problem with internal storage [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,
I have troubles since 4 days with my i9100 (under CM11)
Since 4 days, I cannot access anymore to the internal memory (sdcard0)
My SD Card works (sdcard1). It's even recognized by my computer when I plug my smartphone by USB.
However, the intern card (sdcard0) is not showed anymore when I plug my smartphone by USB to my computer.
I can't access to the Gallery. The message "no external storage available" appears.
With Es File Explorer, for sdcard0, the app shows the following message "SD card unmounted".
However, in the Settings, when I go to Storage, internal storage is recognized… it show only applications, some cached datas and available storage (total space 1,97Gb ; Available 672 Mb).
In the Recovery, I tried "mount /storage/sdcard0" but it shows : "Error mounting /storage/sdcard0 !"
Does the internal storage is down ?
My smartphone is still functional, I can update applications and install new ones, etc. So I have difficulties to think that the internal storage is fully down.
However, I cannot update CyanogenMod with CMUpdater (I tried a restoration of a Nandroid backup but it crashed… probably because of this internal storage problem) which normally writes on sdcard0.
My version of CM is actually 11-20141024-Nightly-i9100 (it was more recent before the restauration which have strangely crashed… but works!)
What can I do ?
Thanks for your help
P.S : I tried many forums (particularly french forums because I'm French… sorry if I made mistakes on my post) but nobody answered me.

Try flashing back to stock rom and see what happens. If it doesnt help, use a pit file to repartition your phone's memory.
I too have the same problem with the internal memory. My s2 is running CM11 right now. And suddenly it have problem with it MMC. Apps like camera, Bluetooth, and downloading files from the Internet seem impossible to receive any file coz I set it stored in the MMC.. Then I checked the setting > storage, the memory card was there. It detects it's total memory. My internal memory however have shrank to total of 1.6 GB with free memory 300 MB. Are you using i9100G? Have you restore the stock?

Hi, thanks for your help. What do you mean by "pit file" ? Is there a tutorial somewhere for this operation ?
I really don't think that going back to a stock rom will change anything. It can't be a problem with CM. It's installed on my smartphone since one or two years and I never had any problem.
I've flashed with the recent Omni ROM but it seems that doesn't help at all

I've found the solution. Under the setting > storage. There are two section, internal and SD card. Choose the option to erase SD card on the internal memory.

Scroll down until you see a file named 'stock 2gb' then download that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...es/mod-partition-internal-memory-app-t2538947 Pit files provide information so that you can repartition your phone just incase the worst happens to your phones. It can be used for your problem too. Then, in odin, locate the pit file for the pit selection then tick repartition, oh, btw, make sure you have stock rom with you so you will need to flash back to stock rom by selecting the files under the respective categories. Once that's all done, you can start flashing.

That could work too. But my method better! Doing this will not properly format the internal sd card while my method formats the internal sd card.
Sry.. It's my mistake that I am not giving the full details of the situation. I just realize that for the apps partition, it is set by 2 GB by default. What am I experienced was the SD section for internal memory gone missing. I tried by erasing the SD card. Anyhow, it has been Ok for a while. I'll try to repartition by using your method. Seems that 2 GB is very easy to full

Ok, I just found a solution for my problem, and without formatting anything.
For those who have this problem, you can try it, there are no risk in theory.
I plugged my Android smartphone on my PC.
I went into the Recovery and choose the 'Mount and storage' menu.
Here, I used the 'Mount USB Storage' option. My PC started to recognize the smartphone and I was able to access to my 2memories (sdcard0 and sdcard1).
I made a right click on the sdcard0 and in the 'tools' menu and choose to perform a basic scandisk...
It found errors and correct them.
After that, i made a reboot and my memory was back.
Thank you gsstudios for your help. My solution is not academic (using Windows to repair my smartphone) but it worked !

Ah, so it was a problem with the file system of your sd card, glad that your problem was resolved.
I had the same problem and using the Erase SD card option in the Storage menu worked for me!
Luckily I had already made a complete back-up recently so only a few new files were lost. If I hadn't though, I would have kept looking for a better solution.
Thanks!
Sorry, what do you mean "went to recovery mode?" Means recovery mode in phone (volume up+home+power) or somewhere or an app in pc?
