[Q] B&N or Android - How are rooted NTs being used? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Curious to hear from people who have rooted. Are you still going back to B&N screen and using it as it was originally intended (as a reader for B&N content), or, mostly as a modified android device?
I did not register mine before rooting so all B&N functions are disabled or inaccessible. Wondering if it's worth the trouble to reset and reroot and register it.

I use it like an android tablet. There's not a single vestige of B&N left on mine
Luckily, the books I own are from the kindle app store so I didn't have to fumble with getting the B&N reader installed after debloating.
BTW, I'm curious what browser most people are using. I'm using opera mobile.

Use mine in various ways. I use several readers, surf the net, share here, & study my Bible. Browser is Dolphin HD.

I was suspecting this but interested to hear from more people. Did you end up deleting your B&N icons too? Set the browser to default to Dolphin (or whatever you've chosen?)
BTW - Dolphin browser

Rooted and still have all the B&N stuff. I use the reader and purchase books, as well as borrow from the library. Also use it as a tablet with corporate e-mail, calendar and contacts. All the apps from my phone that work.
Bill

Is it really necessary to keep all the B&N stuff? Can't you use any of the android market readers to read books and mags? I was not a big customer of B&N before getting the NT and don't imagine I'll be buying a bunch of stuff. I would, however, like to be able to download free books, library books and maybe a magazine subscription or two.

I left all the B&N stuff on there for now, not that I use it. My device is registered to me though. This will probably all change once we get a good ICS or MIUI port (I love MIUI on my Nook Color).
100% of my books are through Amazon, but I never rule out the possibility of wanting something from B&N.
I'm using the now defunct Miren Browser. Dolphin HD is right there in features / awesomeness. I posted the Miren APK in the "Must Have Apps" in case anyone wants it.
Merrell

I use it as an Android tablet. However, I do use B&N software for reading books and I regularly make purchases from the B&N store.
Swyped from my Captivate.

Rooted w/snowball and total debloat. Have no interest in B&N proprietorial software. Bought the NT based on the hardware specs vs price. Am just waiting for a good ROM!!

I like buying books from B&N the (0.00 cost ones ..I prefer the B&N reader so i've kept all the actual apps from B&N. otherwise, I use it as a tablet for games, facebook, twitter, etc. I get most of my epubs from sources other than B&N and can still read them using the B&N reader. I also use it for the Galaxy Tarot app, and surfing the net. Its pretty much left my G2 to being just a phone/txt msg's and to wifi tether my nook to for data. I also enjoy following/applying the hacks and root/dev stuff that comes out. I really love that its virtually unbrickable, currently, so i can screw it up and its easy to factory reset and start over, which i've not heard of in other devices(not saying they don't exist, just that i've not heard of any like that). Also, as a christmas gift, you can't beat it...lol

I prefer the B&N Reader to the others I've tried. As mentioned previously it allows me to use EPUBs that I have, so it works perfectly. Other than that, I am using it as a normal android tablet for gaming and internet with Dolphin HD for my browser.

I am rooted and have access to B & N apps on my NT, but I screwed up and deleted the device manager2.3.4, so i cant buy anything from B&N. I may have to start from the beginning....Sigh

I use the Reader app and pandora from B&N but beyond that I use it mainly for watching videos, web broswing with Dolphin HD but the only gripe I have is that I cant block ads so all the flash based ones kick in when I try to watch any flash based videos and it tends to slow down the tablet a little when there are multiple flash elements on a single page with my videos. I use slacker, pandora, google music, and audiogalaxy for music the first 2 for listening to songs I dont have and the second 2 for the songs I do have. I use Mx video player for videos and have Skifta set up so that I can stream my video collection from my PC to my nook tablet makes it a lot easier so that I dont have to carry around large video files on either my small 2 gig sd card or the nook tablet itself I just stream the videos from the dlna server from my pc to the tab using Skifta. I have a bunch pf the go apps installed including the go keyboard with the go pad plugin that lets me set how big the keyboard is in both landscape and portiate mode.

All android for me. I have no need for bn other than a place to take it to for replacement it if dies before my 2 year warranty is up. I am slowly learning how to set things up, it is the process of learning that has been so fun for me.

I've still got all the B&N stuff but I seldom if ever go there. I normally stay on the rooted side now, mainly watching porn and such........Did I say that? I meant mainly watching educational videos and such.

All Android here, no BN left. However, I still get my paid books from BN, and simply load them onto my computer first.
Love Dolphin browser.

books and videos until ice cream sandwich comes out
sometimes games but thats it

What I do with my Nook
Rooted, left most of the B&N stuff on, though I got rid of Hulu. I use Kindle and Overdrive for all my reading enjoyment (mostly free stuff). I browse (Dolphin), Facebook, Linkedin, DirecTV (for occasional scheduling), Moboplayer for videos, and PowerAmp for music. Oh, and netflix. I have some other newsy stuff like currents and the "News and Weather" app.
Otherwise, its a cool toy. Lots of one-time app usage. Easier to use on the subway than my iPad.
Will likely flash with new ROM once that hits.
Also use Evernote.

I left my B&N stuff on there for times when I'm using it as an e reader. I also like the ability to download from the marketplace and use it as a regular tablet though.

Kindle Integrated Store

I can't seem to get the integrated store in the Kindle app to go beyond the first level (i.e., Books, Newspapers, Magazines, etc.) Once I click on that I get an error and link to the webpage. I have linked free eBooks to the Amazon account on the webpage, and they seem to sync fine with the Kindle app via whispernet, I wonder why I can't do the same via the integrated bookstore though.
Same exact problem here..
Kindle Store
Ditto. Nootered Nook Color w/ 1.0.1 exibits same behavior. Anyone find a fix yet? Scott
It seems to be tied to the user agent issue (reporting as desktop) in the stock WebKit engine.
Any solution to this?
I have a brand new Nook... freshly rooted and this was the killer feature/app for me. It kind of kills my excitement that it doesn't work.
So, this was annoying me too. I read the info about the user agent issue. So I played a bit and here is a quick hack to get it mostly working. Note, that the "integrated" kindle store is really just a Webview that is displaying the mobile pages from amazon.
Outside of Kindle, open the default browser. Click on the icon in the top right hand corner looks like some lines with a triangle pointing downwards.
Then select Mode Options.
Select Settings
Then select the first item marked: Browser Mode/User Agent.
Click on Mobile Browser Mode.
Now, open the Kindle app and click on the kindle store.
Now, clicking on anything here will take you to that error page, but if you now click on the Home link now and if you have more then one browser installed, select the system browser and it will take you to the mobile Amazon page.
Select books then Kindle books and now you are at the Kindle store and the links work. As long as you are selecting the system default browser each time it seems to work for me.
Note: When it draws the page, the back button gets slid up and is not visible. Simply drag the page down and the back button will be visible, or use Softkeys.

Followed your directions and was able to access the mobile site. I don't see where I would select "Books" then "Kindle Books".
On my mobile view I have the following:
Recommendations For You
Category Bestsellers and Deals (Which lists Today's deals: Books, DVD, Music, More categories)
Cart
Wish List
Your Account
1-Click Setting
Help
Amazon.com Full Site
Sorry, for me after getting the error page, if I click on the link to go Amazon's home page, I have a link to books as the first item. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have logged into Amazon before on the device outside of the kindle app?
-frank
I have the same problem in the kindle app, solution I used was to just use dolphin browser on the amazon site and send them via whispernet from there.
The instructions provided here work to a tee. My device was on version 1.0.0, so I didn't have that mobile user agent option in the browser. I guess it became available in the 1.0.1 update. Anyway, I updated to 1.0.1 and 1.1.0. I have the mobile user agent in the browser and it works!!! Thank you so much for this. I could have just browsed the Amazon site on another browser in desktop mode, but this is an enjoyable experience just for Kindle content and you can buy or sample content!

[Q] Third Party Apps and Nook Tablet

I have a fully rooted dual boot Nook Color and love it. I am interested in the Nook Tablet as well. I understand it has a locked bootloader so dual boot and custom ROMs aren't possible right now. I also understand it can be rooted and apps sideloaded.
Does anyone know if these apps will work on a Nook Tablet, rooted or otherwise?
Zinio
Pressreader
Spotify
Kindle for Android
NY Times and LA Times apps
Overdrive
Dropbox
Facebook
OfficeSuite
Slacker Radio
Hootsuite or Twitter
I am just trying to figure out if the Nook Tablet is worth upgrading to or if I am better off sticking with my Nook Color. Thank you!
ETA: I'm forced to wait 5 minutes to fix a typo? I understand the need to block spam, but that's really user unfriendly.
I have a non-rooted NT that I've tweaked to accept 3rd party apps. I've installed the Zinio, Kindle, Overdrive, and Dropbox apps on it, and they seem to run just fine. I say seem to because I haven't done a lot with them yet other than see if they'll open and run. They do and look like they'll run just fine.
Thanks for the reply! How did you tweak your NT?

By following the directions in an article at liliputing.com ["How to Sideload Apps on the NOOK Tablet (Amazon Appstore, GO Launcher EX)"]
No rooting involved; just uncovering and enabling a setting. Pretty easy. From there, I either downloaded some apps from Amazon's app store or sideloaded them by copying the app files off my smartphone, sending them to my gmail account, and accessing my gmail account via the web browser. A bit time-consuming, but not very difficult to do.
Very helpful! Thanks so much.

[Q] Apps marked not compatible in market

Anyone else getting large numbers of apps (esp games) not showing as compatible in market?
e.g. ADW EX, Cut the Rope.
At first I thought it was just me, but I had a chat with another XDA member, who sent me a screenshot of the android market saying his tablet S was compatible with ADW. On mine, its clearly greyed out. So I'm thinking there's something wrong with my tablet or google account?
Any hints appreciated
Hello,
Just because you mentioned about cut the rope game, i installed it and it plays OK (sony s 16gb).
Chris
sh-t that confirms it. Theres something wrong with my market account.
I've written to several app devs and they all say their app is marked compatible.
The two 'test' cases I'm using is cut the rope and ADW EX. Both are greyed out in web market, and just do not appear in tablet market.
I've tried clearing the cache and force stopping, no dice.
Anybody seen this before?
I just looked at market to see if I could find "cut the rope" and it shows up, and is compatible with my sony tablet s. It shows on my tablet market as well.
ADW EX also shows up here. no problems with them what so ever. I got the sgpt111us/s model.
There are a lot of Gameloft games that you have to sideload. And Gameloft does not bother to answer their support emails.
I had to side load the tivo application from my rooted OG to my tablet, but it works fine. Someday I will buy a premier so i can actually use it though!
Hello
I have this problem too.
I asked Sony support (Russia) about this problem.
They said that I could:
1. Clear market cache. It doesn't work.
2. Clear data. It doesn't work.
3. Delete update for market. It doesn't work.
4. update information about tablet from web android market. Here I have question :how could I do this?
I suspect its something to do with regions and region locking for certain apps, tablets and user accounts.
e.g. I am accessing market from Hong Kong location, but I'm normally based in Australia, and my google account/credit card etc. is all Aussie. I'll wait to see what happens when I get back to australia.
If there are region restrictions based on app, user account etc. IT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR. google support fail (again....) its enough to make you consider a fricking fruit machine some times

it's good information to know and very helpful, albeit discouraging

[Q] Multiple 3rd party issues.

I just bought my Nook Tablet form BBuy. It's firmware 1.4.0 I installed some 3rd party apps (Aldiko, kindle, amazon store which work fine. However, I have issues with ADW and Launcher Pro, and I can only get some apps to run. I know that is a a common issue, but I would like to delete the apps that do not work and launchers, but I cannot find out how. I have no need for two launchers, so I'd like to delete Launcher pro -because it wont even launch- but I cannot figure out how to do it. Also gmail -which I read all over this site works- does not work, and I would like to delete it as well. It still pops sup in my searches so I know it's installed somewhere. My other issue is launching ADW. The only way I can get it to launch is when I power off the device and it auto launches into it on power up. If I search for any combination of ADW it does not come up in my lists. So if I exit ADW I have no way to get back into it. Any help would be great. I'm just about to throw this thing out a window and just get a Fire instead.
Okay so i'm a noob at the nook tablet myself but i'll try to give you some ideas..
The apps that don't run.. you don't say.. but i can tell you that honeycomb apps probably won't work so you'd need to make sure they are not for that version of android
This thread gives you great apps that work on the nook tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
you should definitely consider loading app Manager to have side loaded apps appear on the nook home screen.. and Button Saviour so you can get to the alternate home screen (launcher pro, go launcher whatever you use..)
There is great info in this forum. and honestly it took me a day of reading but now my nook rocks...
I've been using my nook for almost a week and i can tell you it's a great little tablet for the price.. i bought it after selling my ipad2 and wanted something to use whilst waiting for the ipad3.. i can tell you now.. i'll be keep this nook tablet as it is a great size for reading and covers all my surfing and movie watching needs.. the kindle fire is good but having also owned that for a couple of days before returning.. i can tell you the limited storage space and inferior screen put me off...
Lol. I had read thatbthread at least 4 times and never saw how to delete apps until now. Installed google framework and now my youtube app doesnt work, and gmail still doesnt work.
You need to install NTHiddensettings.apk in order to delete apps from the Nook.
As I mentiined, I figured out how to delete, but does anyone know where the apk.s download to so i can remove, after installing them?
Seriously? No one knows where the apks download to? Also, how in gods name do you get gmail to work side-loaded. All my other questions have been answered per linked thread.
/data/app
And did you root and install gapps? Without that, I don't think you're going to be able to use gmail.

No not rooted. People are claiming successful installation of gmail, google+, and other google services specific apps, but I get the "Unable to establish stable connection" every time I try to side load them.

Are you saying others have side loaded these apps without rooting? I don't think they work without the Google services framework, which you have to root to install.

Hulu on Q

Hey,
I just tried to make Hulu work on my Nexus Q and I had a wonderful success!
So, if you want it running in your browser, just follow this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427095
I unzipped the file and copied the content to the /data/flash directory. Be sure to read all the thread cause there is 2 ways to do it, I decided to not flash, since it's just to files to copy. In the end there is also a video to show how to do.
I'm using Firefox with the Phony pluggin to emulate a Desktop Browser, in that case Hulu allow me to watch the video, if you don't change your User Agent it will offer you the Hulu Plus, and all the reason for that is to not have to subscribe...
Have fun!

Cool! Fantastic to know, because I tried the Hulu app downloaded directly from the Play Store onto my Q (not sideloaded) and it didn't work (it crashed on startup screen).
By which I mean, I sideloaded google play, spoofed google play into thinking I was a tablet using the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784644, and then downloaded Hulu, and it crashes. In my experience, 90%+ of the apps you'd expect to work DO work on the Q (excepting of course the apps that use GPS, gyro, microphone, or some other hardware that obviously doesn't work on Q). However Hulu fails, so this is great info as it provides a way to get it working.
