[Q] Data doesn't work, airplane mode is the only fix... any ideas? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I posted a question about this last week thinking it was a wifi problem, but it turns out it happens when I'm on data too, so it's an overall data problem... I'm just using wifi most of the time so that was the only place I had noticed it.
Occasionally my phone will stop being able to send/receive data. I'll turn it on and try to load a web page, for example, and it will just hang. Turning wifi on/off doesn't fix it, and turning data on/off doesn't seem to fix it either. The only solution I've found is going into airplane mode for a second. The frequency varies.. it seems to happen between 1-5 times a day, so it's pretty inconvenient.
I've read around a bit and it sounds like it's caused by the phone trying to get a 4G connection but it isn't able to or something, so it just hangs there and never lets the 3g/wifi connections get used (due to priority of connections or something). I almost always have wifi and don't care that much about data speeds, so if disabling 4g altogether would fix the problem I'm game (although I'd prefer another solution...). I tried the *#*#4636#*#* code to change it to GSM only (I read somewhere that that'll disable 4g), but it instantly reverts back to what it originally was, so that doesn't seem like it'll work. Is there another way to disable 4g?
I've got the stock ROM running Entropy's latest DD kernel.

I've had this same exact issue while running Miui and the Siyah kernel. What I've narrowed it down to is likely to be some sort of power save mode that kicks in when the phone goes into deep sleep mode. I haven't had the issue since I've ran the Kernel cleaning scripts and reflashed the latest Siyah kernel, but it reappears occasionally. On certain releases of Siyah, I've ran SetCPU at a minimum of 200Mhz to keep the phone from going into deep sleep just so it wouldn't turn off the cell radio.
Also, as a side note, I've had this happen when my phone loses signal. After so much searching, it will turn off the entire cell radio and display "Emergency Calls Only" until Airplane mode is toggled.

I had this same problem even back with my Captivate. Hoping ICS won't have the same issue. I'm running CM7 and Siyah kernel.

I am having the same problem Data wont work until i turn airplane mode on and off

Have you found a resolution?

I have a problem with Wifi sleeping.

I have wifi set to NEVER sleep. But no matter what I do, the phone keeps turning off wifi every time the screen is off for more than a minute. Why? I tried doing a hard reset, it didn't fix the issue. I saved the Advanced Settings after I changed the sleep policy.

1. check ur battery profile
2. check to see if any other app is doing this. i had 'super power' on mine doing this for me; got this app when I restored my data from captivate to this phone. I had to disable the option in super power, and since then its not doing this.
Huh. I'll try performance mode.
But that still doesn't explain why it would turn off the phone's wifi capabilities completely after a certain time.
And the info for the battery profile doesn't mention wifi.
Whoops. posted twice accidentally
i've had wifi sleep issues rom day one with a wpa2 enterprise network. It refuses to join after the first time, and eventually sets the network to disabled. I'm far from impressed. I wish a hotfix for all 2.2 installs would be released
Well, that was it. The battery profile was the problem. Thanks.
Now if only I could figure out why the phone absolutely refuses to download apps from the market faster than around 200 kb/s, on 3G, 4G or on wifi.
Even on 'performance mode' I am facing this issue. It just keeps disconnecting from wifi. Even if I turn it off and on from widget it doesn't connect. I need to go through settings and to wifi, and then it says "connecting..." and connects.

[Q] Convert to Wifi only

I'm getting a second hand Streak 5". I don't have AT&T, but I recall hearing that dell had also made a Wifi only model. My question is: can I load a Wifi only rom (are there even any?) on it and disable the phone/3G?
There are no wifi only streak 5's only streak 7's have a wifi inly model
try dialing *#4636#*#* (*#*#INFO#*#*) then press call.
try phone information, I beleive there is a button to turn radio off, which should completly disable 3G radio.
Not sure if this will stick after reboot, but I think it should.
settings also gives you the option to turn off data, etc. and if there's no SIM card in it, I dont imagine it will use any radio.
I use APNDroid which seems to disable radio pertty successfully, only allowing wifi connections.
I use my Streak 5 in wifi only mode.
I started off just not having a SIM in it, but I found that cell standby was still eating loads of battery - as much as the phone idle was, due to the fact that they are still able to make emergency calls even without a sim.
The really simple solution is that I installed Widgetsoid and added a widget with toggles for Airplane mode and for Wifi on it. I assume any widget app that allows these toggles would work. I then turn Airplane mode on, which kills the cellular radio, both 2g and 3g, and turn on wifi when I need it - which overrides the airplane disable.
I've even found that JuiceDefender can auto-toggle wifi while in airplane mode based on running apps, though only after rebooting while in airplane mode - before the reboot, it quite sensibly saw airplane mode and left the radios all off.
Thanks for the tips.
Got it up and running nice, again thanks for the tips.
And just to clarify, even if I throw a custom rom (probably StreakDroid) I can't pull phone/3g functionality? Could I pull some apks from the StreakDroid zip to get make it wifi only, or would I need a custom kernel?

ICS Passion Wifi/Google Connectivity Issues

Hi, I'm currently using ICS Passion v10.6. I do not have a data plan, but am always connected to wifi at my house (router is usually about 3 feet from my phone).
Often my phone will lose google connectivity (wifi and signal bars will go gray), and often, usually when i leave my phone untouched for a while and then check it, i will notice that wifi had been lost and it does not reconnect until i turn the screen back on. I have the wifi sleep policy set to never sleep (keep wifi on: always), and the battery info says that the wifi is constantly on.
I was wondering if a different modem would help or if it is a bug in the rom itself or the kernel? My wifi and google connections would constantly be on 24/7 when I was running bionix v1.3.1. I've tried flashing the KB1 modem which bionix uses, but i get the same result.
Thanks for any help
Hey Devils,
I've had some of the same issues, aslo using 10.6. If I leave my phone alone for a bit it seems to stop getting notifications from data. The best example of this is I use Trillian IM and I can be chatting on it. Finish. And put it aside for awhile and not get any notifications and then when I hit the power button all of a sudden I've got 30 IMs waiting for me.
I have tried several different Vibrant ICS modems from this thread but they all caused big issues for me. some caused massive power drain but all of them caused my lock screen be unresponsive when I hit the power button and I'd have to wait for the screen to blink out and hit the power button again to be able to get access. The same would happen when I get a phone call, sometimes the screen just would not respond when it lit up for an incoming call. I think it was because it would start searching for data connectivity (so it seems related to the problem which makes me think it's not modem related)
In the end, I went back to the KB5 modem and my screen issues seem to have resolved. I may try Passion 11 soon and I'll post results if it helps, but right now I'm not ready to do another change on my phone.
-update- I just checked and saw that v12 is out now and has both a kernel update and an update to wifi. I'll probably try that tonight.
-update- I think this might be being caused by "Deep Sleep" causing the phone to shut down it's data antennas to turn of to save battery. I've installed "NStools" on my phone and set it to set the min CPU freq. to 200mhz to see if that will prevent deep sleep. I'm not certain this tool will work 100% on this build, but we'll see I guess.
I'm also running the Vibrant without data, using wifi to do things with the internet.
Since flashing ICS I haven't had any wifi issues on the two networks that I've used. Seems odd that you are now having them. Have you tried a different hotspot?
I have had issues sending text messages. I can place and receive calls, receive texts but can't send any. Have you had any of these issues? I'm curious if it has to do with the lack of data plan.

IMS_Data_Retry Keeps RAZR Awake

I've been using the app BetterBatteryStats as recommended by XDA to determine why my RAZR is awake much of the time, even when the screen is off and data is turned off. It turns out the problem is the internal process IMS_Data_Retry. This process apparently keeps attempting to establish a data connection over cellular data, at least 4G LTE. It aquires a wake lock while doing its work. This one process can keep the phone awake 95% of the time. The only way I have found to semi-stop it is to turn on 4G LTE. Even then, while it stops consuming CPU time (supposedly), the count of retry attempts keeps going up. (Putting the phone in Airplane mode also stops it, but then calls are stopped as well.)
There is a setting in /system/build.prop that I thought controlled this process:
ro.cdma.data_retry_config=default_randomization=2000,max_retries=infinite, 0, 0, 120000, 180000, 540000, 960000
I looked at some code references I found ( http://hi-android.info/src/com/android/internal/telephony/cdma/CdmaDataConnectionTracker.java.html ) and learned that the above values are in milliseconds. It seems that the default_randomization value is added to the other values in the list to create a schedule of retry attempts, but I wasn't able to figure out all the parameters to the method, if I even have the right one. I tried changing "infinite" to a small number under 10, but it had no effect - the process just keeps retrying forever.
Is there a dev out there who knows more about this? I want to limit this process because I seldom use cellular data right now and am usually on WiFi. It hinders any attempt to extend battery life. Is it a bug? Is it fixed in a later release (I'm on .748 stock) ? Do any of the custom ROMs have this problem? Can the build.prop setting I found be given values that limit the amount of time this process holds wake locks?
Thanks.
Did you ever get any resolution on this? For me, I think the problem started with the ICS update this summer. I constantly have gsm_data_tracker, RILJ, and IMS_Data_Retry using up the battery (in that order from highest to lowest). I tried wiping cache which helped the 1st time it cropped up and then it came back. I also tried a tip I saw somewhere for turning on airplane mode, rebooting, and turning off airplane mode (though mine as soon as it reboots, it already turns off airplane mode which it shouldn't). That worked for several weeks, but I had to do it EVERY DAY when I got to work. I think it's something with the 3g repeaters in the building. I did have it so it was wifi only (mobile radio off) on my work profile in profile scheduler, but then I needed cell for some mms stuff, so I ended up enabling it again. Basically when I come in the building and forget about my phone for an hour or 2, I go to get it out of my backpack and it will be hot from processing and 20% or more of the battery gone when I've done nothing in 2 hours of being at work. I saw somewhere that someone though either gsm_data_tracker or RILJ was related to something with the alarm, which I do use my phone as my alarm, but I use a 3rd party app. With the time change, there were a few days I woke up before it ever went off, so I turned it off before it did alarm. There were no differences with the partial wakelocks or battery drain in those cases. Unfortunately, I don't have another alarm readily available to get up for work right now and on the weekends when I don't need an alarm, I can't replicate the cell repeater at work issues, since I wouldn't be around the cell repeaters. As fart as in the building at work, until I reboot with airplane mode and all of that, the cell signal will bounce between like 0 bars/3g and lots of bars (no indication of network) and some bars with 1x network. It's all over the place. The airplane mode/reboot used to stabilize that, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick anymore the last few days that I've tried that. I have to leave my phone on the charger as much as possible at work so that I don't leave for the day with a dead phone.

[Q] WiFi locks turning on, cell signal lost (sometimes comes back, or needs reboot)

Hello, folks!
I have a rooted I9100 (Android 4.0.3 stock from Vivo, baseband I9100VILP3, kernel 3.0.15-I9100VJLP7-CL371396 [email protected] #3, compilation IML74K.VJLP7, CSC I9100UVILP3).
Sometimes I have problems turning on WiFi, it keeps always turning on and neither become active nor allow me to turn it off again. I then need to reboot phone to fix it (when it reboots, WiFi comes turned on and gets on normally).
Another problem I have with it is that sometimes (average of 4 - 5 times a day) phone loses registration with carrier. It completely loses* signal and shows a "prohibited" icon where signal strength is shown at status bar. (Edit) Sometimes it comes back again in a few seconds and sometimes it stays at that state, making me have to reboot it to fix the problem (turning on and off airplane mode doesn't work; in fact, with registration lost and trying to use airplane mode, it doesn't turn off and only fixes with reboot).
*Actually, it doesn't lose signal (can be seen in "settings - about phone - state" screen uploaded), but only unregisters from carrier.
(Edit: screen/phone language is Brazilian Portuguese)
I've downloaded another modem driver but never had time to test it.
I don't know if both problems can have the same cause, but both of them are very annoying (especially signal loss) and I'd like to make some tries to fix them, so if anyone knows what can I do (even data collection to investigate them), your help is very appreciated.
Thanks
Additional test (ServiceMode)
When I was in the forum to post this thread, I've noticed this other thread and I've decided to use ServiceMode code (*#0011#) to investigate further at the next time my cell lose signal. Unfortunately, it showed absolutely nothing. Literally nothing (just "ServiceMode" caption and no text on the screen below).
I just spent the time to post this because I know that, even if it has shown no information (on screen), maybe it still can be a clue for the cause of the problem.
Thanks
Pls help!
Does anyone have some light to shed on this case?
Please, I do really need to fix it, at least the signal loss problem.
Thanks.
Same Issue in the US on Tmobile
Mine started doing this just a day or two ago. Exact same issue. I can kind of operate on the EDGE network but 4G fails, only WiFi seems to work. T-mobile doesn't seem to have a fix for it.
Changed to MIUI
I've just changed to MIUI (reflashed modem also – now it is ZSLPE instead of previous VILP3).
I still have issues with carrier register loss, but until now it always reconnected after a few seconds. Maybe it is a carrier issue and not a phone one.
I don't turn on WiFi a lot, but all times I've tested it, it worked well.
Another thing I've noticed with this change is that battery temperature while charging used to reach 48°C (118°F) or even 50°C (122°F) while battery level was low (less than 50%), but now it stayed around 35°C (95°F), which is completely acceptable.
