You need a P rom to flash as far as we know so far .If you flash a wrong firmware you can brick your phone .
Checkrom is a custom rom if you go to the Checkrom post in the developers thread it wil giver you a descriptions . Same goes for all custom roms page one this rom is and has the following or not .

does this mean i cant flash miui ?

You can only flash a P rom unless you find evidence to the contrary . Most roms are for i9100 version .
Or be a guinea pig and try .

thanks for the info, i think i'll leave it for now i dont want to brick my phone :L

You can flash 9100 ROM on your 9100P
But 9100 ROMs don't support NFC module (it will be supported natively with ICS).
I have the same device (orange FR) and you can look my signature for working Radio + ROM...

I dont remember
But if your device is already rooted you can install Rom manager or CWM from the market and make a backup of your config. Then reboot in CWM and install what you want (read the how to install section of the wanted rom).
Don't care about your "P" version!
What you read here for standard device (i9100) is working for your P version.

Don't use Rom Manager, use Clockwork. Rom Manager seems to not work well with the SGS2, this forum is littered with posts from people who used Rom Manager to flash and it broke CW Recovery, put the phone into a bootloop or soft brick, etc, etc.
Best to play it safe IMHO.

Oh I didn't know that rom manager was not working fine on our device. I am using clockwork manager and it is working fine.

I've seen a heap of posts in the couple of months I've been visiting this forum from people who ended up with broken CW Recovery & bootloops after using the Manager app.
I used it once to try and flash a kernel & it broke recovery completely.
Obviously any/everyone's mileage may vary, but for me, I'd rather play safe & boot into Recovery whenever I flash or backup.

so if i shouldn't use rom manager, what should i use ?

Didn't say you shouldn't use it Just said that plenty of people have had problems using the app, and rather than risk it, since I had that problem with it, every time I've done a backup or flashed a rom/kernel I've rebooted into recovery & used CW Recovery itself to do the business
As I said in my previous post, your mileage may vary & you may not have any problems with it at all.

Hello guys! I have a GT-I9100P also with the latest BVKL2 2.3.6 firmware. I had it rooted when I was at BVKI3 2.3.4 firmware and now I am looking for a good CF-ROOT kernel for my phone. What would you recommend me? (what if I tell Chainfire to make a CF-ROOT more appropriate to my kernel)?

Why don't you post in Chainfire's thread to ask him about making an insecure KL2 kernel?
But I think you can use the insecure KL1 kernel from Chainfire's thread to use for root. Or you could flash SpeedMod or Siyah, and the rooting will happen for you. You have lots of options.

were to put the rom zip file
I got the exact same phone as the OP im trying to flash a rom in a zip format but clockwork mod recovery cant find the file ive looked in install from sd card and install update.zip. ive also tried installing it through rom manager, no joy there, inside rom manager i chose to boot into recovery to flash it manually and now i got a black screen with a white triangle n a lil green android dude so i see what people are saying about the s2 and rom manager, anyways my question is were do i place the zipped rom? on the internal or external and should i rename the rom file?
Ive had 2yrs experience with a HTC HD2 so im not exactly a noob to flashing roms, but the galaxy s2 is very new to me.

Hi guys. I am new to the android scene and right now i want to root my phone because of battery draining. My question is,can i root using chainfire's method because it said there that he only rooted with KDD. I have KE7 (GINGERBREAD.XWKE7).

FWIW you can also root by flashing a rooted firmware, like VillainROM or Lite'ning, with Odin/Heimdall.
(Odin is more tried and tested but only runs on Windows. Heimdall also works though and is multiplatform - I use it on Linux.)
Thanks for the reply. My english is not that perfect and i didnt know what superceded meant hehe. Flashing a rom with included root sounds great. Btw can i flash litening when i have ke7? Because it didnt specify in the thread what kernel you need.

Thanks! Just rooted my stock phone and boy was that fast. Now i have another problem lol. I can't open market because i can't connect my google account. It says something like cannot connect to server, might be a problem with your network bla bla. I read that factory reseting the phone might make it work, but my question is,would resetting the phone remove superuser and that other app? (I think it was CMW)
Up /10chars
did you use a cusom rom?? at the moment its better to just root your device as all the roms are being constantly developed and bugs and eroors being fixed.. if you use a custom rom you will end up flashing your device quite often.. just my thoughts
Yes i rooted my phone only. But i need to know if resetting my phone would remove superuser and cwm not the root itself.
i have rooted mine and i dont get that problem... which rom did you use.. and yeah factory reset will remove those

[Q] Help me select ROMS

hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

Installing rom manager is not an issue... Very few custom rom are compatible with this. Afaik Cognition rom is one of them.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing

[Q] ROOT Conformation - am I doing this right?

Hi!
I was hesitant to open a new thread, especially since I watched the noob video before registration. But since I really want to make sure that what I am doing is correct, I have decided to post this.
I have SGS2-I9100 with ICS (so my firmware version is XWLPD). I will be using this tutorial to root my phone (How to Root Galaxy S2 i9100! [ICS][Android 4.0+] -on galaxys2root dot com) I am familiar with the basic terminology and also understand the principles of rooting. However, I do have a question about which CF-kernel am I supposed to flash. I found two of those (v5.3 and v5.4):
From the tutorial (i can't post outside links) - v5.3
And from Android authority - v5.4
Which one should i use and are they both ok with XWLPD firmwares?
(And don't I need an original kernel after the rooting? With previous tutorials, there was always an insecure and a secure kernel)
And after the device is rooted, what is the best thing to do? I am thinking: first I would flash Clockworkmod Recovery 4.0.1.4 (and backup my original ROM), and then install TITANIUM BACKUP for contacts, apps etc. Is that good?
I really appreciate all your help!

I am not sure about CF-Root, but I recommend siyah kernels because its safer. It should also work with your firmware version. If you are on 4.0.4, best not to have CF-Root and wipe data through CWM since you might brick your phone. CWM also comes with siyah
Sent from my potato.
I have 4.0.3.
Thank you for your answer!
however...
Well, this has confused me a little.
So instead of CF-kernel I should use Siyah kernel? (@ gohkanmoral dot com right?). And then flash it with ODIN 1.85. And that is it?
And CWM is allready a part of the kernel, so if power off my phone then i can reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery by holding down Volume Down, Home button, and Power button together?
I am sorry for my lack of understanding.

Yes, u can use Siyah kernel V4.1.5 from www.gohkanmoral.com ( u should Dwnld the file from 'Download Tar (for Odin) link).
this kernel will root ur phone running Ics 4.0.3 and will also install the latest 6.x Recovery and also a dedicated 'CWM' app in ur app drawer which u can use to boot into recovery
Ps- its always better to clarify if in doubt rather than getting Stuck!!

the saga continues...custom roms...
So, I played with the root apps for a while, freezing bloatware etc.
Now it is time to install a custom ROM. So I went to INDEX of ROMs page. So since I have ICS 4.0.3, I can choose any of those? What is my best option? Use one of the Samsung based roms?
Your original ROM doesn't matter. Just make sure your kernel supports the custom ROM then it will work.

the best way to say what is your best option is to try ROM by ROM
seriously, read the descriptions and choose the one that fits your needs, but before flashing new roms always do a nandroid backup, so you can restore your previous rom in case of troubles or if you just not like the new one

[Q] Install CM10 with a 4.0.4 LQ6 stock ROM

Hey XDA !
I've just installed the 4.0.4 ROM from Free (French operator), and I'd like to root it. I tried to with the non-PC solution, but it failed (no service). I learned that I had luck that my phone didn't brick. So, I'd like to know how to root it, and install CM10 on it (I tried to install CM10 too, but I had a keyboard issue on every ROM, and I don't think it came from the ROM itself).
So, how do I do it ?
Thanks
iSteelZ
flash siyah 4.1.5 kernal to give you dual boot cqapability then follow instructions in the cm 10.
there are numerious threads on dual booting in this forum.
Do I have to keep dual boot ? Can't I just have CM10 ?

Yes.
Just flash the kernel then factory wipe and install your rom via recovery.
This is same process as any other flash, these "how do I flash" threads are silly and have no purpose as they already exist in abundance if you would look and read stickies/guides etc.
I know it must be very boring to always see posts like mine, but I already bricked my phone, I don't know how, and I don't find any topic on how to install it, only on Galaxy Note.
And my version is the LQ2, not the LQ6 (this is my modem).

Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)

hallo im also new to rooting but flashed cm10.1 yesterday with root and can share what i did.
i also got i9300 nordic version of the s3. and downloaded some files
odin 3.07
cfroot 3.64
cm10.1
gapps from 03-2013
i resettet my phone and enabled USB debugging and put the phone in download mode and startet up odin and made sure its connected and loaded cfroot.tar and flashed and the phone rebootet itself and installed the ness. apps for rooting. then i bootet up in recovery manager and went to install from sdcard and installed cm10.1 and then gapps and then did factory reset and dalvik wipe and rebootet and it bootet up CM10.1 and deleted /0 folder on the phone which was empty folder from previous touchwiz samsung rom
and yes there are risks but i did this 2 times. tw to cm10 and then back again but everything went problem free. so the risk ppl are talking about is mostly likely cuz some broke and if u mess up it breaks. so it can happen.
q1; when u flash cfroot the bootloader changed and it changes counter from 0 to 1.
q2: when u flash stock back with odin it flashes rom and bootloader/recovery but counter is the same but can be fixed easily. ( did it myself between my 2 flashes so when i flashed back to CM10 it still was on 1
q3: i think its everything thats risky. dont think root and rom flashing are more risky than others
q4: dont know what u mean exactly. i didnt mess with kernals. CM10.1 has a good one i think.
q5: dont either
q6: i dont have any yelly triagle on my cfroot+cm10.1. theres a lille read thing in the left corner like 2mm long that shows u got flashed.
hope it helps.

For kernels that support both go here or here. At the moment Siyah or Goggy Max are the people's choices I assume.
Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Any flashing involves risk from almost no risk to a much bigger risk for those that dont read the basics and follow instructions .
Root voids warranty .
Q5. What is kernal compatibility? like some kernals are JB only. And does every ROM contains it's own kernal?
yes and yes .
Q2. When i flash stock ROM through Odin, do i restore the kernal, recovery and the flash counter?
NO read the basic faqs and guides all stickied .
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)
YES
and also i need a kernal for both AOSP and Samsung roms which i can't find
IT is inside the rom .
I suggest you bother to read the faqs and guides or join the help i bricked my phone club .

1. You can flash boooader separately or when you flash stock roms. (I can be wrong but this is what I know)
2. I never done that but yes for first two, not sure about flash counter, you may still have to clear them with TA first.
3. As above answer, it's always risky to do stuff without proper knowledge and no guarantees even after proper knowledge but mostly no.
4. Yes.
5. Kernels are essential part of your phone and they are compatible with your os version only and also ur phone model. So if a kernel is for s3 4.2.2, you can't flash it over to amy other model or os version. Yes for second part.
6. No. Triangle away may remove your flashing counter but as long as you have custom anything and your rom status is modified that triangle will be there.

Siyah supports both cm and stock. Yes, you cam flash cm over stock or siyah kernel.
You have to flash your kernel again after every rom flash.

As long as the rom comes with a kernel, which is the normal base, you have to flash the kernel again. Usually you can do this direct from recovery before the full reboot.
As long as the kernel supports your rom type (see each kernel's thread for it), you should be fine as long as you follow the instructions.

bootloader no clue, I never touched it, too dangerous to mess up stuff.
for flashing googy, usually you do it in CWM or via Odin. Check out the thread and read the instructions. Syiah's thread also got a huge amount of guides in the first couple of posts and they should be valid somehow for Googy as well as it is based on Siyah.

Please do not start messing with bootloaders .
Logic says read the instructions for the kernel you want to flash .
Its a CWM file and flashed via recovery .
You really should bother yourself to read the basic faqs and guide .

The bootloader isn't modified. The bootloader *shows* modified by reading other data.
