[Q] USB / ethernet adaptor - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello,
First time tablet user, just picked up a transformer prime and am leaving for Afghanistan in two weeks, now wifi is sporadically available where i will be, buti prefer a hardline and came across this , would this work with the prime running android 4.0 if i had the keyboard dock for the usb 2.0 port for the usb/ethernet adaptor. I just need a reliable connection to skype and stay in touch with my wife and friends.
Plugable USB 2.0 10/100 Ethernet Adapter (ASIX AX88772 Chipset)
(Sorry cant post link, but this is the one i found.^^)
Or if this doesnt work and are other options can you guys point me in the right direction?
Sorry im not that tech savy.
Thanks in advance guys !

Sounds like this might work if you root the device and don't upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Hi there! My transformer Prime is updated to the latest ICS firmware and I just tested the Apple USB Ethernet adapter for the the MacBook Airs on my TP and it works! I just tried it a few minutes ago because I wanted to see what would happen and i couldn't believe that it connected without any problems.
So if you want a sure thing that works get the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. Good luck by the way in Afghanistan.

Wow, thats fantastic, ill see if i can find it, as i said im not to tech savvy, and not familiar with apple products, but in order for me to get this done i first have to land a key board dock as well to utilize this usb ethernet adapter!
If you don't mind can you post a link to it incase i dont find it!
Thanks a ton!

HP USB Ethernet Adapter
I've also tested this at work and have used an HP usb ethernet adapter.
Model: XZ613AA
you can find them all over the web.
this adapter worked like a charm for me.

fantastic so we have two seperate products then that can give us this option, fantastic, thanks a ton!

OP the one you posted works great (plug & play ) with TFP and ICS.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...GU1_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3HIHADV23VGU1&n=&s=&v=glance

just wondering guys, are all your devices rooted? or will it plug and play even when the prime is not rooted? =D

I have tried my Wii's USB ethernet (funny I baught it for my Wii, but I hardly use it for that.. its been surprisingly useful for a lot of other devices) this works on ICS too. I am rooted, but I did not load any special drivers nor other ethernet ui mods. One thing I did notice, is there is no ui option (that I could find) to modify the device's network configuration (so I'm stuck with dhcp) perhaps I need a UI mod for this.

if you get a console program like "connectbot" or android terminal you can setup static ip's to the nic by using an ifconfig command.
it works like most flavors of linux.
ifconfig eth0
or
ifconfig wlan0
ifconfig -a should show all adapters
this is an example of a set static address and netmask.
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
you can also disable an interface with ifconfig {interfacename} down
exp : ifconfig wlan0 down
I'd recommend making sure your wlan device is deactivated before attempting to configure the USB ethernet adapter.
OH and as a note, if the commands don't work it may require root.. but i'm not sure most of the time when i'm in a terminal app my first thing I do is a SU command.
anyhow hope this info is useful

oh yeah and on another note I use "proxydroid" at work to setup my corporate proxy so I can use my tablet at work via our webproxy
so for those of you looking to show off at the workplace I've found it easy to carry the usb Ethernet adapter and have the proxy droid handy.
its a very useful piece of gear when stuck in meetings

I work in IT and I thought it would be nice to use my prime for testing routers, switches & ect. I got a belkin usb 2.0 ethernet adapter and it works great. I am running ICS by the way.
This one?

ICS feature list didn't show support for USB LAN adapters. So you're saying standard kernel provides support? Can you up a pic of the networking setup in ICS?

Hmm, I have the D-Link DUB-E100. I'll have to see if that'll work when I get home.
It worked with the Honeycomb drivers, FWIW.
Just tried the USB adapter from my Mac Air and it just worked
With micro HDMI to VGA, who needs a laptop now... well apart from Android development still being better in Eclipse
Can anyone try a USB wifi adapter and see if it works? If it does, please mention adapter make & model. TIA.
that is v cool, have you tried using a console cable to usb for switch configuration? e.g. getting a serial to usb adapter and plugging into the switch and using telnet client on your laptop?

Hi Shawn,
seriously, your Macbook Air USB-Ethernet adapter works?
Can you confirm whether your Prime is rooted? Which version of Android is it running?
Thanks,

Belkin usb to gigabit ethernet works too
I have one of these usb to ethernet devices:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-USB-Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B002N56EWI
Works without any added drivers, etc. on the 'Prime running ICS. I rooted mine straight away so can't say 100% that it works without root access before anyone asks (sorry!).
Streams 1080p videos flawlessly from my pc via the MyNET DLNA app and also from the 'Prime's internal memory to my Samsung TV via DLNA (again using MyNet).
Gotta love the 'Prime
This $7 USB Ethernet adapter (only 100MBps) from Monoprice works out-of-the-box with the TF201. The "asix" linux module is builtin to ICS and provides the functionality. The adapter automatically picked up an IP address via DHCP the moment I plugged in the ethernet cable. Manual network config using the "ip addr" command is also a possibility, although I assume it requires root access if you do not already have that.

I am a fan of the BTEP terminal client for Android, but the ssh binary built-in to it will not connect to Cisco devices for me. The ConnectBot app connects flawlessly, however.
Next stop for me: serial console (going to attempt wired and/or bluetooth).
I even plugged in my kids Wii ethernet adapter and it worked! (ICS not rooted).

Nice. My wifi works great but i am sure others will love this.
Was at Microcenter today.. picked up an Apple one that does 1Gbps.. not in the cheapie range at $30, but we'll see how it works out

Just waiting to get my Prime back now from ASUS though
I just tested out two different Prolific 2302 USB Serial adapters for connecting to my Cisco stuff's console port. They both "worked" from the Android OS point-of-view (kernel detected device/module and attached to ttyUSB0), but only one worked with the "Slick USB 2 Serial Terminal" app which seems to be the only option for this usage. The app is not awesome for connectivity and the interface is a little quirky, but it is functional and beats carrying a heavy laptop for quick simple stuff. If I expected to be in serial console for more than 30 minutes or so I'd bring my MacBook.

Dam I love my prime. I didn't even convert the 1080p video with handbrake. Tegra 2 would never do this. I have fixed the lag-I\O issue on my prime & I don't have WiFi issues so your results may very.

[Q] Ethernet with USB host

Hey, I'm trying to find information on using a SGS2 or another handset on ethernet. I have seen a few threads relating:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224660
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274656
and a few more, but all relating to tablets. The reason I need ethernet is because I plan to use one of these as a camera and image processor on a UAV. We are planning to use a 2.4GHz antenna to communicate with our ground station, so it would simplify everything if I could just implement the communication through ethernet.
My question is if all these usb-rj45 dongles with linux drivers will work on this or a similar handset. I'm fine with doing terminal tweaks to get it to work, but I'd like to know if anyone has gotten ethernet to work on a handset.
Thanks,
Santiago

[Q] tv out and xbox 360-controllers

I'm turning blue trying to figure out how to setup my flyer with an mhl-cable to the tv while connecting my wireless dongle at the same time so that I can play games on the tv.
I bought a usb-hub, and was eventually capable of connecting the xbox dongle in order to play games on the flyer. However, I can't figure out how to get the picture to the tv instead, so that I can use it as a regular console. It's either only the tv, or only the dongle (via a usb-hub connected to a usb otg-cable) that could be plugged in. Has anyone else been able to get both working, and if so, how?
I'm running stock HC, I've got a nokia ca-157 cable, an mhl-adapter and a usb-hub.
Not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but you cannot operate USB OTG and MHL video at the same time. If you need wireless you should use a router, not the USB connection.

He's trying to use an Xbox controller(corded) for games on his flyer, and output the display of those games to the TV...which as you said isn't possible.
Ok, now I understand. Correct, not physically possible.
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
I did refer to wireless controllers that connects to an xbox-usb-dongle that is needed, since MS didn't choose to use regular Bluetooth.
I know it would be easier with ps3- or wii-controllers since they only need regular bluetooth. Though, they're very expensive, so I'd prefer trying to get my wireless xbox controllers work. But if it's not possible to use wireless xbox controllers and tv-out simultaneously, I guess I'll have to go shopping.
How about using this Bluetooth controller for $39.99.

Ok i just saw this thread and sry for hijack but are you saying i can bluetooth one of my PS3 controlers to my flyer instead of using the on screen controls? If so plz link me to some docs.

DigitalMD,
They're not available in my country, unfortunately. Thanks for your help, anyway!
casperi,
No, I was probably wrong about that one as well. Most HTC devices apparently won't work with sixaxis. Really annoying since I bought the flyer with the intention of using it as a video game console. I knew several others were capable of it, and HTC are known for good quality, so it seemed reasonable it would work. Hope Google's tablet will work better.

New Android User Lots of Questions

HI
Just bought a cheap tablet a Asus Memo Pad not the HD one the one before.
Single core VIA cpu etc
So the first thing thats been bugging me is that i bought a RJ45 to USB adapter and it doesnt work on my tablet.

If i rooted would i be able to install Android 4.3/4.2 because i got the 4.1 version so the newer ones are better yes ?
Is there any kind of newbie guide to rooting this tablet ?

[Q] How to enable Nexus 9 USB OTG Ethernet?

Hi all,

Unfortunately, Ethernet isn't working via USB OTG cable. Does anyone know how to enable it or do I have to install CyanogenMod for Ethernet support?
Thanks!

I've not tried the script, but it's been reported to work elsewhere, also. It doesn't "just work" on my rooted stock N5 with KK. It does, however, work on my rooted stock N7 FHD (L 5.0.1)--"just works." I have the BobjGear Ethernet Adapter for Android that I purchased years ago for my former Toshiba Thrive. The OTG is run-of-the mill Amazon Asian import variety. It worked on my Nexus 7 2012.
I just tried it on my old Galaxy Nexus, and it also "just works." It may have worked on the N4, but I gave it to my son so can't test it.
I would think that it'd be possible... I have a 1Gb/s connection at my house so whenn I have a large file such as an HD movie I need to download right before I go somewhere I plug my Micro USB-to-USB into my Cisco USB 3.0-to-Gig Ethernet and then into my Nexus 7 (2013), running stock 5.0 FYI. I then turn WiFi off, then wait about 20 seconds. Although it does not show that you are connected via Ethernet you are. I ran a simple speed test using Ookla.
With WiFi I was getting up to about 80Mb/s, with my Ethernet setup I was getting around +900Mb/s.

How is 900 meg even possible? Nexus 7 only supports USB 2.0. Even with a gigabit connection, you should not get faster than 480 Mbps.

Hi there! Just wanted to chime in to note that USB Ethernet works fine on Android 5.0 running on an unmodified Nexus 9. I'm actually sending this through the Ethernet connection I yet have to update to 5.0.1 though and see if it works there as well :fingers-crossed:
Hi together,
I am using a Nexus 9 with Simple AOSP (Android 5.1.1).
For using my ethernet connection I bought this adapter: DONZO® micro USB 2.0 A Stecker auf RJ45 Ethernet Adapter 10/100 Mbit.
When I plug it into the tablet it begins to light up. So I think the tablet recognizes the adapter. (When plugging it into my Nexus 4 it does not light up.)
Now my problem: Nothing happens... If I disable Wifi I get no connection with Chrome.
When looking into netcfg i don't see an eth0 interface.
Also the app "Ethernet" from xda (USBhost) does not work, unfortunatelly... (Nor it works with any of the scripts provided here at xda.)
Anyone knows what could be the problem?
I'd really like to use the tablet with ethernet instead of Wifi at the moment.
Thanks!
Works for me on 5.1.1, unrooted Nexus 9
Possible of interest, I have an UNROOTED Nexus 9, using the factory 5.1.1 image, and I just plugged in an OTA cable, plugged a USB to Ethernet adapter into it, turned off my Wi-Fi, and still have connectivity.
Thus, my tiny little corner of the world is currently a VERY happy place. Thought I'd share my joyousness around the forum.
Which adapter ?
