[Q] How to enable Nexus 9 USB OTG Ethernet? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Just received my Nexus 9, it got updated to stock Android 5.0.1.
Unfortunately, Ethernet isn't working via USB OTG cable. Does anyone know how to enable it or do I have to install CyanogenMod for Ethernet support?
Thanks!

has this ever been possible? i have never heard of any android device being able to accept internet though an OTG and usb\ethernet adapter...

Not sure about stock Android, but CyanogenMod 4.4.4 works on Ethernet via OTG on my Nexus 7.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xda.usbhost.test
That should work. My Ethernet adapter is being used on my nexus player or I would test for you.

Does it have linux driver?

I've not tried the script, but it's been reported to work elsewhere, also. It doesn't "just work" on my rooted stock N5 with KK. It does, however, work on my rooted stock N7 FHD (L 5.0.1)--"just works." I have the BobjGear Ethernet Adapter for Android that I purchased years ago for my former Toshiba Thrive. The OTG is run-of-the mill Amazon Asian import variety. It worked on my Nexus 7 2012.
I just tried it on my old Galaxy Nexus, and it also "just works." It may have worked on the N4, but I gave it to my son so can't test it.

I would think that it'd be possible... I have a 1Gb/s connection at my house so whenn I have a large file such as an HD movie I need to download right before I go somewhere I plug my Micro USB-to-USB into my Cisco USB 3.0-to-Gig Ethernet and then into my Nexus 7 (2013), running stock 5.0 FYI. I then turn WiFi off, then wait about 20 seconds. Although it does not show that you are connected via Ethernet you are. I ran a simple speed test using Ookla.
With WiFi I was getting up to about 80Mb/s, with my Ethernet setup I was getting around +900Mb/s.

How is 900 meg even possible? Nexus 7 only supports USB 2.0. Even with a gigabit connection, you should not get faster than 480 Mbps.

This app won't work on our nexus 9
Because of 64bit
And
Tasker did not fix the root bug on 64bit
Go here for the script to enable it

Hi there! Just wanted to chime in to note that USB Ethernet works fine on Android 5.0 running on an unmodified Nexus 9. I'm actually sending this through the Ethernet connection I yet have to update to 5.0.1 though and see if it works there as well :fingers-crossed:

Hi together,
I am using a Nexus 9 with Simple AOSP (Android 5.1.1).
For using my ethernet connection I bought this adapter: DONZO® micro USB 2.0 A Stecker auf RJ45 Ethernet Adapter 10/100 Mbit.
When I plug it into the tablet it begins to light up. So I think the tablet recognizes the adapter. (When plugging it into my Nexus 4 it does not light up.)
Now my problem: Nothing happens... If I disable Wifi I get no connection with Chrome.
When looking into netcfg i don't see an eth0 interface.
Also the app "Ethernet" from xda (USBhost) does not work, unfortunatelly... (Nor it works with any of the scripts provided here at xda.)
Anyone knows what could be the problem?
I'd really like to use the tablet with ethernet instead of Wifi at the moment.
Thanks!

Works for me on 5.1.1, unrooted Nexus 9
Possible of interest, I have an UNROOTED Nexus 9, using the factory 5.1.1 image, and I just plugged in an OTA cable, plugged a USB to Ethernet adapter into it, turned off my Wi-Fi, and still have connectivity.
Thus, my tiny little corner of the world is currently a VERY happy place. Thought I'd share my joyousness around the forum.

Which adapter ?

[Q] USB / ethernet adaptor

Hello,
First time tablet user, just picked up a transformer prime and am leaving for Afghanistan in two weeks, now wifi is sporadically available where i will be, buti prefer a hardline and came across this , would this work with the prime running android 4.0 if i had the keyboard dock for the usb 2.0 port for the usb/ethernet adaptor. I just need a reliable connection to skype and stay in touch with my wife and friends.
Plugable USB 2.0 10/100 Ethernet Adapter (ASIX AX88772 Chipset)
(Sorry cant post link, but this is the one i found.^^)
Or if this doesnt work and are other options can you guys point me in the right direction?
Sorry im not that tech savy.
Thanks in advance guys !
Sounds like this might work if you root the device and don't upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Hi there! My transformer Prime is updated to the latest ICS firmware and I just tested the Apple USB Ethernet adapter for the the MacBook Airs on my TP and it works! I just tried it a few minutes ago because I wanted to see what would happen and i couldn't believe that it connected without any problems.
So if you want a sure thing that works get the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. Good luck by the way in Afghanistan.

Wow, thats fantastic, ill see if i can find it, as i said im not to tech savvy, and not familiar with apple products, but in order for me to get this done i first have to land a key board dock as well to utilize this usb ethernet adapter!
If you don't mind can you post a link to it incase i dont find it!
Thanks a ton!
HP USB Ethernet Adapter
I've also tested this at work and have used an HP usb ethernet adapter.
Model: XZ613AA
you can find them all over the web.
this adapter worked like a charm for me.
fantastic so we have two seperate products then that can give us this option, fantastic, thanks a ton!
OP the one you posted works great (plug & play ) with TFP and ICS.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...GU1_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3HIHADV23VGU1&n=&s=&v=glance
just wondering guys, are all your devices rooted? or will it plug and play even when the prime is not rooted? =D
I have tried my Wii's USB ethernet (funny I baught it for my Wii, but I hardly use it for that.. its been surprisingly useful for a lot of other devices) this works on ICS too. I am rooted, but I did not load any special drivers nor other ethernet ui mods. One thing I did notice, is there is no ui option (that I could find) to modify the device's network configuration (so I'm stuck with dhcp) perhaps I need a UI mod for this.
if you get a console program like "connectbot" or android terminal you can setup static ip's to the nic by using an ifconfig command.
it works like most flavors of linux.
ifconfig eth0
or
ifconfig wlan0
ifconfig -a should show all adapters
this is an example of a set static address and netmask.
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
you can also disable an interface with ifconfig {interfacename} down
exp : ifconfig wlan0 down
I'd recommend making sure your wlan device is deactivated before attempting to configure the USB ethernet adapter.
OH and as a note, if the commands don't work it may require root.. but i'm not sure most of the time when i'm in a terminal app my first thing I do is a SU command.
anyhow hope this info is useful
---------- Post added at 11:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 AM ----------
oh yeah and on another note I use "proxydroid" at work to setup my corporate proxy so I can use my tablet at work via our webproxy
so for those of you looking to show off at the workplace I've found it easy to carry the usb Ethernet adapter and have the proxy droid handy.
its a very useful piece of gear when stuck in meetings

External Storage Question

Had trouble finding an answer for this, feel free to link slap me if my search foo just failed...
Do I have to root my Nexus 10 in order to read from a USB drive I've hooked up to my Nexus 10 using the mini-USB slot?
I'm using a conversion dongle, a AC Adapter powered hub, and have tried a thumb drive and a WD passport. I've confirmed that all devices work with a PC as well as with my Samsung GSIII (which is running CM10.1).
Is there a setting I need to enable or is this just something I need to root the device in order to get it to work?

Hi!
You either need Nexus Media Importer (as already stated) or root your device and use stick mount (or something similar) or flash a custom rom which natively supports OTG like any ASOP/AOKP or CM10.1 ROM...

Just got my NP and Need advice - Ethernet and USB long side

Hello
Just got my new Nexus Player and after long search I can't find the right answer.
I want to connect the player to my Ethernet in my house for better connection and if possible to add an external HDD.
Here is my list of questions and I hope that I've got the the right place:
1. I want to have the maximum network speed and I have Giga cables in my walls . Is there a standards in the adapter that I need to buy to have the maximum speed? Or all the adapters have the same speed limit?
2. Is there a way to connect both Ethernet and USB HDD long side? Is there a magic box that have USB and also an Ethernet connection? If there is I would like to get an advise what is the best one to buy.
If someone have an experience what the items I need and have an advice what is the best to buy - I will love to get some links.
Many thanks in advance

You'll need an OTG cable, a USB 2.0 hub (a powered one if you're going to hook up non-powered hdd), and then just about anything you want will work through the hub. For expanded storage you'll need to root and install stickmount. If you want to install large games then you may need foldermount as well.
Sorry for posting the same issue for the 5th and many thanks for helping me - now it's time for shopping

In Amazon type in "ethernet USB hub", many results will come up. Here is a link to the first one. I don't know for sure if it is compatible or not though.
Anker® 3-Port USB 3.0 HUB with 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Converter (3 USB 3.0 Ports, A RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Port, Support Windows XP, Vista, Win7/8 (32/64 bit), Mac OS 10.6 and above, Linux) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KGV7I9Y/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_-ifUub140WKQG
The problem is that even if the adapter supports full Ethernet speed the USB port on the nexus player will not.
So, you should get the benefit of a stable connection... But it will never be beyond USB 2.0 speeds.
I am connected to 2.5ghz wireless N and I haven't had a problem with 1080p Netflix, no stutters on YouTube and modern combat 4 and 5 both play with no lag.

Can anyone tell me why my USB flash drive doesn't always mount with my Nexus player? I've got a powered Plugable USB hub, with my pny 32gb fat32 format USB drive.
It keeps switching names and sometimes doesn't show up at all until after I rerun stickmount.
This happens after waking from sleep as well. I'm obviously rooted and unlocked what am I missing?
Also how do I activate pro on stickmount after I've purchased it. I just get a weird screenshots about the pro version when clicking upgrade....

Wireless Connection to projector

I want a wireless connection from my Nexus 9 to a projector.
I tried to attach a Chromecast to the HDMI port of the projector but Chromecast requires WiFi.
This solution works at home but not at place I have not access to a free WiFi connection.
The idea is to wirelessly present slides in meetings using my tablet.
Any wireless solution that you know would work??
Need my Nexus 9 and projector ..... (buy a receiver but what)
Will Miracast do the job?
1) Buy a dongle
2) Attach it to the HDMI port of the projector
3) Run and app
4) Present slides with no wires
miracast wont work.
you would need a hotspot maybe by using your phone..i forget if that can be done or not. you will need to use the tablet to set up the chromecast
Chromecast did not work using my phone as a hotspot..... dropped in 5 minutes.
Support forums say mobile hotspot is not supported.
May look into hard wiring the Nexus 6 to the projector..... not something I want to do, makes for ugly presentations.
Yeah if you could connect to it in a offline mode, a router would be your fix. Wish there was another way.
Have you looked into EZCast dongle? There are so many variants I can't decide which to try. Results are mediocre overall, but some are reporting success. I just want to cast videos from tab storage to TV without wifi. This device does that. It also does miracast. I've done the build.prop edit that may allow miracast. If I try one (or two), I'll let you know.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I dont think that miracast would work for that .
When do you don't want failure, I would recommend trustworthy wires.

Interesting as I don't think I was (nor were most others) ever able to mirror my Nexus 7 2012 to the TV via a cable. Micro usb to HDMI--I've never seen one, only dongles such as MHL and Slimport. MHL isn't supported as it is on my old Galaxy Nexus. Slimport isn't supported as it is on the N7 FHD and Nexus 5. A micro usb-to-hdmi would not work without some sort of hardware and software adjustments because of the limitations of the usb port on the Nexus 7.
As the thread is about a wireless connection to a projector when there is no accessible wifi, we came around to wired connections. So far, you're the only one to suggest a cable will work, but the cable you hyperlinked is a micro hdmi-to-hdmi which would not natively work on any Nexus tablet or phone (at least since Galaxy Nexus). I have that cable.
I have read that the EZCast dongle may work--if you actually get a good one and are close enough to the output device. I'm not ready to try it as I'm still debating keeping my N9.

I got the Samsung Original LAN USB HUB Adapter (ET-UP900) for Galaxy Note Pro /Tab Pro and it works fine.
I also have a keyboard and mouse working via the 2 USB ports provided. Looks like USB devices that demand more power than the View can provide can also be charged separately over a USB3 connector - very good adapter.
Does it work?
Does the Samsung LAN/USB hub (model ET-UP900) that you bought work for the Samsung Galaxy View 18.4" big tablet (SM-T670)?? How do you set it up on the 18.4" tablet?? Thanks.

Yes it works, just plug it in and it works. Typing this from a Galaxy view with Mac keyboard attached (brightness, media transport, volume function keys work, numpad numbers don't work, but arithmetic keys work), mouse attached (scroll wheel works), and ethernet all attached to ET-UP900.

Galaxy View
My friend, thank you so much for letting me know. :highfive: Do you think Samsung will provide Galaxy View with an update to Android Marshmallow 6.0 ? I bought a Samsung stylus (from this site
fonejoy.com/genuine-samsung-t365-galaxy-tab-active-stylus-pen-gh98-34603a.html ) with the intention of using it on the Galaxy View. However, it doesn't work on Galaxy View. It's mind boggling because this stylus comes with the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active and is supposedly an ordinary capacitive stylus (source: sammobile.com/2014/09/25/samsung-galaxy-tab-active-hands-on ) . Does a capacitive stylus work on the Galaxy View???
I really hope they will update to Android 6.0. I bought it when it was reduced in price because I had an Amazon gift card, and the Lenovo PB2-690N that is same size was announced but not available yet. I hope that when it is out Samsung will finally release a 6.0 update.
A capacitive stylus really should work with this touchscreen.
Galaxy View 18.4 & Marshmallow
Yeah, that galaxy tab active stylus pen gh98-34603a doesn't work for View. Do you know of a way to make it work? Sigh. Blew quite a lot of money on a useless stylus. I sure hope Samsung gives Android 6.0 to the View. Is your View buggy due to the Android 5 Lollipop? Mine doesn't work well.

I can't believe, on the more connection setting I only have the Options: Printing an VPN.
Ethernet does not work! A Mouse on the Hub works.
See my Attachment.

Is your Galaxy View a Verizon (SM-T677VZKBVZW) or AT&T (SM-T677AZKBATT) variant with the 64GB storage? Those versions probably have ethernet option disabled.
