Might get AT&T SGS2, any problems I should know about? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys, I currently have the Epic 4G Touch with Sprint but there is a good chance that I might jump ship and come over to AT&T. If I do, the GS2 would most likely be the phone I will get. It's gonna be tough working with such a tiny screen (lol!) but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Don't want the Skyrocket because it doesn't have an Exynos in it and the HSPA+ should be plenty fast for my needs.
Anyway, all Android phones come with their fair share of problems out of the box, what am I going to have to deal with if I get the SGS2? Any radio issues? Battery problems? Screen problems? How does AT&T handle tethering? I heard about them catching people and changing them to a hotspot plan, is that true? Also, does AT&T still block app sideloading?
I plan on rooting but remaining on the stock ROM, assuming it's as good as the Epic Touch's stock ROM. Just gonna debloat the crap out of it and use Autostarts to keep everything under control. Should I go ahead and assume that rooting it is fairly easy?
Also, how is AT&Ts customer service to work with? I have been with Sprint for many years and have gotten manipulating them down to a science. I always get the latest and greatest phones, and never have to pay more than the subsidized price. I'm kinda nervous about switching because I'm worried I won't be able to pull that crap with AT&T.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

AT&T customer service.
Good threads to read so as not to get problems. 1, 2, 3, 4.

Trust me, I've already read through a whole bunch of crap. I am just looking for some personal experiences here without having to read through page after page of meaningless drivel just to find a few simple answers.

only downside i can think of is if you drop it from the 10th floor the screen will crack... and it doesnt seem to work well in the pool.
It is a great device, only complaint i have is the non HD screen. If you are coming from a phone with high res like a iphone you will notice. If you arent coming from a high res phone you will never notice

You might have more issues with AT&T than the phone. Overall its a great phone with lots of dev support. there's a reason why AT&T is always at the bottom of the Lissy when out comes to customer services.

Most of the issues can be found by searching.
Hardware issues: Some people have had issues with the USB port breaking. Not common, but it seems that 90% of hardware failures are this.
The AP Mobile widget in UCKH7 will eat your data. If you're here I assume you'll be rooting - so not a problem for you. Kill it with fire and you're good.
The OTA update (UCKK6) sucks infected donkey balls. Lots of battery issues. Again - easy to avoid if you're here.

Ha! I post there from time to time! I was one of the Android Source admins before it merged with Android Task Force. Haven't used this profile pic on FB for a while now so you've got some good memory.

Hardware = USB problems with the connection port. Blotchy screen on dark blacks in a dark room. Not noticeable until then. It's a side-effect of SAMOLED screens. Burn-in most I can figure. These two problems are fairly rare (on this forum, I'd say 1 out of maybe 15 people complain of one or the other hardware issues).
Software: let's face it - 2.3.6 sucks. The update broke bluetooth HID devices, meaning no bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Occasional reports of wifi breaking, but that's due to the retards who never read and flash willy nilly from our sister forum and phone, the international GS2 without using the development tool Hellraiser. So, be educated man. If you don't read, you will end up ****ing your phone over, and then if you whine about it (which inevitably happens every time someone who doesn't read screws their phone up), prepare to be flamed. At that point you piss everyone who's seen your same thread or situation a hundred times from people who didn't search and read.
There are reports of battery drain issues due to 2.3.6 as well. Some of these are from programs, but if you're an Android user already, you know to kill and save RAM. I've had occasional reboots from when I pushed my phone hard, but nothing of diminishing value.
AT&T Service: Customer service sucks, so I hear. But they've always worked with me. I got them to unlock multiple phones in the past, I was grandfathered in to unlimited, and they've let me skirt waiting periods on my next update. I suppose if you're a new customer it might be different. I wouldn't know. Their service as far as phone calls and data? It ain't the best. To be honest, I don't get many dropped calls per week, but I know I get enough to remember that I get dropped calls weekly. Data can be spotty at times, but overall, in Orlando, it's fast.
My Review: moving from any other phone to this one is like being born again. You believe in technology again. Alright, so it ain't that much of a spiritual experience, but lemme tell you - this phone is fast. Yet, if you want the latest and greatest from Android, specifically 4.0.3, I'd pass on this phone. We will probably get it. Maybe. Our devs will work to make it happen, but sadly I doubt it will be an official update.
If you want solid hardware and a reliable phone however and don't mind gingerbread, this is the phone for you. It is fast, well-built, and has good battery life from my experience. I use it heavily for everything, and i get nearly 14-18 hours of heavy use (phone calls, texts, music, videos, downloads, web-surfing).
4.5 out of 5 stars for this phone from me.

Thanks for taking the time to type all that out autonomous, thats the type of response I was looking for. I am coming from Sprint's SGS2 variant so I'm well aware of how badass these phones are. I could care less about ICS, I had the Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks and returned it because I like the SGS2 + 2.3 + TouchWiz better. I'm probably gonna go to Costco over the weekend and pick it up to try it out and see how AT&Ts service in my are is.

Sprint and AT&T are in the same family with their Exynos chipset, which I'm sure you're aware of. The difference is that we are closer in relation to international. No WiMax chipset in ours, so easier porting.
AT&T is a fairly good provider. Service is decent, even out in the country, but it doesn't make you say "Man, Ma Bell is great about their connectivity everywhere."
While I told you we probably won't get an official Ice Cream update we WILL get one in one shape or form. 2.3.6 problems can be avoided by Hellraising a 2.3.4, 2.3.7 or 2.3.5 ROM. So if you want to avoid battery drain issues and use your bluetooth keyboard or mouse, you have your choices.
Bottom line brother, is with this phone you have options. We have devs, and tools that give you many options. If you're asking me if you should make the jump, I'd have to ask why, because WiMax with Exynos seems like a good setup, but if it's for a sensible reason, you could do worse than Ma Bell. If it's assurance you want, yes, this is and will be a good phone for quite a while. Yes, AT&T is decent, and yes, you will be fairly satisfied.
As a disclaimer, every experience is different, so I suggest you either look around this forum and make your mind that way, or bite the bullet and don't look back by moving to AT&T blindly, and go for the shortest contract you can.

Verizon confirmed no 2.2?!

I read on Engadget that the Droid Eris will not be getting the 2.2 Froyo update. Anybody else hear this? It's a shame, considering it seems that 2.2 runs great on my Eris. I'm sure we will see a little spike in these forums with "zomg how do haxxor Eris I wnt Froyo plz halp". What does everybody think of this news from Verizon? Smart move, or mistake?
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
This has been known for some time now. The Eris has been discontinued and therefore Verizon, has no obligation to remain updating our devices. I feel it is a mistake, judging from all of the Eris users, but what're ya gonna do? Haha
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
This has been known forever, they just finally told us outright.
Though it's a shame that Verizon will not be giving the eris any more updates it's understandable. You can see in our roms that our phones don't benefit greatly from Froyo. There's a light increase in speed and stability but our phones just weren't meant to deal with these things. Putting newer software on an older device isn't always going to lead to speed increases.
Basically, it sucks, but it makes sense.
after rooting i don't need verizon to push froyo. plenty of froyo roms to choose from here.

It only makes sense because the phone is discontinued, other than that its stupid cause the phone still has not been out for a long enough time to not receive updates seeing how most that bought the phone has not had it long enough to upgrade

Absolutely. And Also, more choices and if you're not satisfied with one rom, you can try another till you find the best match for you.
Also, bug reports are acknowledged and addressed as soon as possible. While Verizon tends to publicly deny or ignore or shift blame until months later they might release a patch.
We really have a good thing going here with some great devs. And you can learn alot too and do your own tinkering if you want to.

I believe it is a mistake since Eris users are still under contract and cannot afford to buy a new phone outright. The service that Verizon has given the Eris has really disgruntled me with them to the point that I am actually considering switching networks over this. I just bought my Eris in March and 6 months into the contract (and 5 Replacements later) the phone is not even supported anymore. So I have a year left before my upgrade date to think about how much Verizon screwed us. I understand they don't sell the phone anymore, but they still have plenty of customers under contract. It is obvious that once they make the initial sale, they no longer care about us until it is time for contract renewal.
That's why I got away from Verizon when my contract ran out. They aren't very customer focused imo. I use a Verizon MVNO, and I have a tiny data budget each month, but it really doesn't matter much as I use WIFI most of the time (home and work). It's much cheaper too, and I still get to use Verizon's network.

My wife has the Droid incredible and she has the 2.2 update applied to it. Let me be the first to say its no different than 2.1. I've played around with it a fair amount and side by side other than being inherently faster due to the 1.0 ghz its no diff than the stock Eris as far as functionality goes. Our froyo roms that are developed are by far better imo than the stock update

You're a bit confused. Verizon has gone beyond what I ever expected when it comes to Eris support. Verizon gave us that most recent July Update with a new radio and bug fix.
What people fail to understand is that froyo on our phone is pretty much wasted on us.
ex: Our phones jump from 250 to 450 (app.) quadrant scores. Our phones get an added 2mflops ~~. That's the jump from 2.1 to 2.2.
That's a tiny jump, not even 2x the quadrant score, and a measly 2mflops.
Look at the incredible, it jumps from mflops of 5.2 to 28. The change is much more significant and clear.
In summation, Verizon spending time and money on updates for our phone would be useless since our phones hardware is so underwhelming.
[soapbox]The news doesn't surprise or upset me. I wish it weren't so, but only because having an official Eris Sense Froyo ROM as a base could only improve Froyo (plus bring Froyo+Sense) ROMs on the Eris. I would guess this is the major reason most people on here don't like that we're not getting the updates.
With the custom ROMs we have already, the Eris is such a great phone, and it wouldn't be much if any return on investment for HTC/Verizon to bother with Froyo on this retired phone. Acting the devil's advocate, what's good for Verizon is good for us (in general, not necessarily always). If they don't spend resources and money on "x", then they don't have to raise our rates or cut other services to help fund some expenditures. It wouldn't happen immediately but it's inevitable that it would eventually. The longer they can put it off, the better for us.
After all, do any of us who run custom ROMs on our Eris think that our phone sucks? If you do, you either are using the wrong ROM or are unrealistic in your expectations.
Sorry for the rant!!![/soapbox]
I think the Eris running KaosFroyo is awesome but that's not going to stop me from jumping over to Sprint for an EVO. The fact that verizon has outright stated that they will be offering tiered Data (with good reason, they're collapsing in the face of the smartphone revolution) in addition to a not insignificant price difference combined with their lack of customer focus adds up to an account loss.
I love the verizon network, but when you can hack a PRL that roams onto it and can do so voice and data for free? Even the network loses a mark. One thing I am doing for sure though when I jump ship is I am going to offer my twice used (I bought it used) eris right here to a developer for cheap before I take it to ebay. As my last act of support for the community.

Stick with photon over epic 4g touch

If your thinking about changing from the photon to the epic 4g touch. I wouldnt switch and the reason i say dont switch is because i have a history with samsung i have had the captivate, droid charge, revolution, tab, infuse which is enough to know about them. And with motorola i had a droid 1, droid 2 and droid 3, droid x and x2,xoom and photon. And i can honestly that motorola hands down makes the better product alot of people i know buy into what the reviewers say about the device and not make our own judgement. On samsung i found myself rooting it and the installing a lagfix with motorola i root and setcpu and its good. Also the build quality with way different motorola has them beat in that department. I mean that plastic with samsung is not got one drop and its bad yea its thin but ur paying the price for it with build quality. All im saying is put motorola phones next to samsung and u will c a major difference. And as for as those speed tests go thats all good that u get a highscore and all but the photon is a beast of a phone. Dont b easy fooled cause the epic is new on the block. Also the screen on the photon is amazing.

Where is all the support
I have been debating back and forth and which phone to keep... The Photon is a great phone but it seems like there has only been crickets in the dev section. I look at the SGS2 dev section and there is tons of things going on. I love android because I find it fun playing with the phones, changing ROMS and everything else.. But it seems like there are not a lot of devs interested in this phone, and honestly I don't have enough time to learn how to be a dev, I just follow the instructions.. I guess we will see... oh and GO PACKERS.

Meh.... Bootloader unlocked without 4G may as well be locked at this point. Moto is killing this phone sitting on their thumbs with no official bootloader unlock.
I went from a Samsung vibrant to the photon. For the most part I loved the vibrant. My phone before that was a nexus one. Their is a noticeable difference in build quality. I prefer htc and Motorola over Samsung. Yeah the new epic touch 4 g is ultra thin but will it last two years? I plan on keeping my photon till my two year contact is up. Also getting updates was a pain with Samsung. They doing do ota updates, but you have to install it from a PC and go thru this whole process thats a pain.

After messing with the Samsung infuse I changed my mind about swhiching. The screen is way to big and with only a 800 x 480 resolution it fails. Sprint should of just kept it at 4.3 inches which I think is the sweet spot for phones.
All that is well and good but I had a Photon, upgraded to MR5, had all the tips and tricks and I STILL had NO AUDIO on calls. Is it too much to ask that I have audio on a call that by all indications has gone through? If I can make and receive calls on the Samsung then that's the phone for me.

Not to mention...Samsung is also very slow on updates. The Epic is still on 2.2 while the almost all of Motorola phones has been or will be updated to 2.3.

Also considering Motorola is now owned by google, we'll probably get ice cream sandwich within in the first month of it's release. Google has had a great track record updating phones they own.

Nexus phones and "phones they own" are a bit different.
I was really annoyed at the lack of development for a while but then I thought back to my evo which really needed it to keep up, and the epic were anything other than bone stock had stupid connectivity issues. I've rooted my mopho to restore apps and that's it. It just works outside the box. if I really feel like getting squirrley I might look to remove the bloat with root explorer. But ive gotten amazing battery life, awesome performance, great signal and call quality. Really im only missing the dev from my old flash junkie ways not that the phone needs it.
Basically if yall want to leave then GTFO and stop posting, if you want to stay let them GTFO and enjoy your amazing phone. I doubt it will be all too soon that this phone becomes too underspecced to run our favorite apps.
If you are having issues and haven't screwed with removing system apps and have tried removing all installed apps and putting them back on one at a time bring your phone back it probably was a bad build. Its really not that hard people, the vast majority love how this phone functions, the fact that I can see it in full sunlight is awesome.
If you want better benchmarks go get the GSII and pray to whatever God you believe in that the hardware is compatible enough to make use of all of those devs already there otherwise it could be an EPIC fiasco all over again. Base your opinions on the here and now, not some future potential that may or may not be achieved later. Just don't come back and complain about reception/gloat about some number on a benchmark let us happy MoPhoers be.

Oooo! I didn't even think of that. Good point. I hope this actually happens (getting excited, cannot contain myself!!!) lol
The only thing I wish this phone had were toggles on the notification pull down menu. Those are so nice on Sammy and HTC. I've tried some of the apps that do this, but they all tell me my phone doesn't support multiple toggles on a single widget. If someone could figure out a way to do this, I would forget all about the e4gt.

I wouldn't expect that to be of much benefit to a phone that is already on the market though. I'm looking forward to an amazing Android moto, yes, but I dont expect the photon to become that device.
On the Samsungs again, they don't get updated, they get released partially functional and then ditched. Some of you are talking about ice cream sandwich now? Epics froyo update was painfully late. We still can't get a full-featured GB. Our front camera only works sideways in video chat. And our TV output is blocked. Bring into this everything that was already mentioned about overheating, poor signal, shoddy GPS, and random battery drains. It would take a lot of convincing to get me to buy another one.
I'm totally digging this photon thing, but looking g forward to what's next from motogoogle.

I Gotta Say

Hello,
As a former HTC EVO3D Owner from the "First to Buy" opportunity in June before Sprint sold their soul to get the iPhone and before that an EVO 4G, I gotta say I absolutely am blown away by the Photon. I was quite intrigued by it when it was released, but Sprint staggered the release so that it was past 30 Days between when the 2 Phones were released.
I had so many issues with my 3D that I literally had 4 Replacement Handsets sent. I was finally so fed up that I told them either give me a Photon or I am cancelling.
The one thing I did not want to do is give up my last Annual Upgrade which they offered to move up if I paid $55 due to LTE coming and actually having a real chance of Nationwide availability.
Back to the Photon, while it took about 45 minutes to get used to the UI, I am really liking this phone more and more each day. And the Speaker is absurdly better than the one in the 3D. As in I can finally hear Netflix and all the Music on my Phone.
While I hope there is an official ICS Release, there are obviously ways around it. Moreover, with the vastly better Call Quality, Speaker, and just how much better it works in low signal strength areas, I am pretty much positive I will be getting whatever Motorola LTE device that comes out around June. Hopefully, it will be similar to the Razr.
It is weird, I have been with Sprint since 1999 and one of my all time favorite Phones was the StarTac I had around a decade ago. Unfortunately, my ex GF's Dog took it and digged a hole in the Yard. (found years later) Since then, there have been very few Motorola Handsets. I can only hope Sprint maintains at least cordial relations with Moto.
Cheers,
JJ
Welcome dude! You think its fast now, try unlocking and running CM7/CM9(ics) it will blow your mind. I'm pretty sure it's getting an official ICS update but the ics build we have now is phenomenal even at alpha stage.

Welcome! Hang out! I'm rooted, but not unlocked. Funny Kenny, I had my Evo for a year, I got Photon August 2nd 2011. I have used 4G EXACTLY 3 times!!!
Hello,
My most sincerest thanks again for the warm welcome. I have been with Sprint since 1999 and must say this is my favorite Handset by a Country Mile. Next comes Rooting and all that fun stuff.
I also love that when using ADW EX that the Motorola Widgets are available whereas the HTC Sense Widgets are not. And the difference with 4G staying connected is amazing. I was in Tampa/St. Pete today and the Photon never dropped Wimax whereas the 3D constantly did.
Cheers,
J

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about it?
Not to hijack but I'm totally opposite OP. Coming from Evo4g I think the Photon is a POS...I've had 3 replacements (reboot issues) and the 3rd still has trouble...mind you, all my issues are in heavy roam/no signal areas which I believe to be the factor but these probs didn't exist for my evo.
However, I recently flashed jokers cm9/ics and can vouch for Kenny's claims...this rom is sick as hell and so far my phone feels like a new unit. No crashes or issues yet in my roaming state, I can only cross my fingers at this point.
I'll likely jump ship if the Nexus hits anytime soon.
@cclarck, nothing personal, but do you think maybe it's you? you stated you flashed it, maybe your area does not like your radio? You also stated roaming?
Just saying. I have been reading for @ week on the Nexus, not impressed at all. (and if you have problems with Photon, good luck with the Samsung!)
Me specifically? No I don't believe so...now my photon in relation to my area...yes most likely. As you can see I'm a lurker but I have quite a bit of experience trying new roms/kernels on all my phones but the Photon has been nothing but frustrations to this point. That being said, it's not like there was a disclaimer on the Photon when I upgraded saying that it's radio would be complete sh!t compared to my evo while roaming, all while causing shutdowns requiring a battery pull/plugin.
I'd like to reinforce that cm9/ics so far is phenomenal, but 2 days soak is hardly extensive testing yet...
edit: Oh and I am certainly very scared to go to a Sammy, I think their build quality is the worst and I hate the plastic feel. My main reason for jumping aside from my photon history is wanting that huge screen; and I like the nex over the touch. Sprint needs more phones =(
If you want a huge screen skip the galaxy nexus and wait for the galaxy note. Sprint's definitely getting and that screen is even bigger. If you don't know what the galaxy note is check this out....

Yeah I don't like sammy either but this phone looks cool. I'm not going to get it as my contract expires this Feb. I may move my 2 lines somewhere else don't know yet. Sprints future looks promising with lte and all the hot devices launching but I simply can't wait till 2013 lol. I want to go back to gsm so I can swap sim cards as I please lol. God I hate cdma! I'm thinking att, definitely not t-mobile I worked there previously for almost 4 years. (I hate those bastards)
I've had att and never ever again, I've been through every carrier and they were the most frustrating with dropped calls and such. Unfortunately, my area is predominately Verizon but I missed the grandfathered data so no thanks to that too.
I dunno, every phone has it's fan base that disses on other brands and what-not so I get it. I haven't had Sammy experience since the Incredibad so maybe their build quality is better than I give credit...I def see a love/hate for every brand though, not just sammy.
I was in love with my photon when I first had it, even ignoring all the launch issues and replacements but it all eventually wore me down to never wanting a moto again =(

Perhaps you may want to look into this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211157
It's a bit of a pain to set up at first but once you do it's worth it. My calls drop all the time in my apartment with Sprint, but not at all using a Verizon PRL.
There's a danger of roaming too much and getting noticed by Sprint, but for most people it seems to take 3+ months for Sprint to notice, and even then you'll more than likely receive a warning letter first.
I've been using this over over 6 months and I've gotten 1 warning letter but when I inquired about it with a Sprint chat rep, he said I was not in danger of being cut.
So YMVM, but it'd help at least short-term.
Hello,
For some reason, I cannot stand Samsung. This extends to their TV's and other Home Theater Components. I am a Moderator on a Moderator on a AV Forum with close to 100,000 Members and find it hard to recommend them.
For whatever reason, I lump them in with Hyundai (I must say they have made huge strides over the past years since the $3,999 Hyundai Excel) Regardless, I tend to prefer the Japanese and American Companies. I know everything is manufactured in China or Malaysia.
Cheers,
JJ
I am ALSO Rooted but NOT Unlocked. My area is Saturated with 4G and I use it ALOT. I have Unlimited Mobile Hotspot (GrandFathered in since I have been a customer since 1997) and use it on my Samsung Galaxy Player5.0 and HTC EVO View 4G (while out and about). I only use WiFi on the HTC EVO View (Did Not want ANOTHER Data Contract) and just Tether to my Photon.

Who is planning on getting the GS3?

It's looking pretty sweet. I like the rezound but I really want to get back to a lightweight device with good battery life. I'm not going to pre order but if they are getting great battery life on stock battery I'm going to give it a go.
Overrated phone imo. Pass.
Definitely not buying any cdma Samsungs unless they finally figured out how to make phones that actually work as phones, hold a GPS signal, and don't drop data... So far they have a horrible track record on Verizon and Sprint.

I'll probably switch. I like the Rezound but there's nothing going on in the dev side of things. This phone is basically dead. One thing about Samsung devices, in every forum there's tons of developers putting out lots of roms.

Theres two things:
1) The rezound being on a US carrier, Verizon specifically, HTC is probably told not to release the source immediately, and given how long it's taken for ICS to get here, that pretty much proves it lol once source (finally) drops, devving will jump start. ICS is so much better, and even with all the little problems and no source, devs and users want ICS, we're just at a stalemate right now, as really nothing more can be improved on until we get source.
2) There are a lot of devs putting out Samsung ROMs, yes, but going with that, there are probably the same number of devs putting out the same number of ROMs for HTC phones. The problem here is the Rezound is specific to Verizon, where as Samsung phones, like GS2, have a bunch of different, and unlocked, versions floating around. When I had my Fascinate, the Galaxy S devices had dozens of different ROMs and tweaks, but I could only get a couple on my device.
But like everything, it's opinion-based lol you're more than welcome to do whatever you like, but IMO, wait until source drops and see what happens, then decide. I love the smoothness everything about the ICS leaks, but I always drop back to GB because of battery life, custom kernels, stability, etc.

I'm not particularly enamored of the GS3 as a phone, but it's good enough, and I get to keep my unlimited data. So I'm sold. I love my Rezound though, and will be keeping it in case Verizon nerfs the world phone aspect of the GS3.

Oh I know! Luckily I was able to call Verizon to switch my fiance's phone over to a Rezound for free. That phone was THE WORST and I'm not even just talking about development. Battery life sucked, 3-4 data drops a day, and a whole slew of other problems.

they don't have to be comparable, I simply stated that if you want to see a dead dev community go there
I had bad experience with droid charge, so Samsung phones doesn't really excite me anymore. but I will be keeping my rezound for at least another year
Just to be clear people, the reason the dev scene here is pretty dead at the moment is purely cause we don't have what is necessary just yet. The rezound has a brand new type of radio and is one of only two phones on Verizon that can do voice and data at the same time over 3g. This new RIL (and the fact that it's 4g) causes huge difficulties in getting AOSP to work correctly with it unless you have the proprietary files from HTC. We have the kernel source code and ril code for 2.3 but for 4.0, all we have currently is the prebuilt binaries. We need the actual source code to be able to fix the current issues we have. This source should come shortly after the official release of the OTA (which now must happen by the end of the month according to HTC). See if developement doesn't pick back up once the code is there. This will be a great phone for CM9 soon enough

Yeah, there are some things I don't love about the GS3, but 1800 mAh non-removable battery in the One X=fail. Samsung putting a 2100 mAh battery that can be removed is winning.
I just think HTC totally effed up by not sticking to their hero model.
Going with the S3. HTC was on a hot start with this phone with ICS then just forgot about it. No offense, the dev community likes to have drama, same with SOME members. Development looks the same. I got this phone for options, barely are some. Its an amazing phone yes but ill try the S3. My S1 was actually great to me believe it or not. Plus an S4, better battery, and the new features in Touchwiz ar very intriguing. 2gb ram? I have a feeling this phone will be monster. Devs love galaxy series as well.

Need a Phone!

Hello all.
I was using a DX2 which isn't a bad phone but the ability to use custom software on it is very limited to none as I am sure most of you know. regardless it was a good phone, at least for me. Well in the short ver. of things my wife got a replacement phone which I was stuck with. It's the Samsung ChitOphere (Stratosphere) sorry if you like the phone and I offend you but to me it's a flipping joke!
I would very much so like some serious input here as to what phone to get. I don't have an upgrade at the time, I have about 10 months or so before that so what I get will have to be 100% out of pocket. I don't mind it being something used. Here is what I want in my phone.
1. Ability to use custom ROM/Kernel/Etc
2. 8mp camera
3. Good Sound
4. Good Radio
5. Good Battery life
Now, I am not unreasonable, I realize that getting the perfect phone is not gonna happen, but if I can get one that has the best balance in these features I will be tickled pink!! So please, if you will respond to this thread if you have some good advice and can help me in my quest to find a phone.
Oh yeah, the phone can be something that I can replace when my upgrade is ava. or it can be one that I would want to keep.
If you aren't aware by now, I am on VZW.
Thank you very mcuh for your input!
For me, a very good phone is the Samsung Captivate i987 (5Mpix camera, but has a looooot of support from community).
Possible choices with 8MPix camera:
SE -->Neo V, Arc, Arc S
Samsung -->Galaxy SII Skyrocket, SII T989, Infuse 4G
HTC -->Evo 4G, Inspire 4G, Sensation 4G...
Other choices...
Check in the development forums of each device if it has good support
Sounds like you want a GS3 lol

While I do appreciate all the replies, I would prefer not to purchase something that isn't already on the VZW network, as I don't have want to have to deal with one being unlocked for the GSM. Also I have no intentions at this time going with a different carrier.

I would say Galaxy Nexus, but it lacks in sound volume and camera quality. I can't comment on the radio, however.
Nexus/S2 have loads of support. They are really a developers phone. Battery life just isn't there on the nexus, unless you don't keep your 3g on when not in use or use fast dormancy.

Well the GS3 is right up your alley for sure.
1.All of this is possible ^_^
2.I am pretty sure the GS3 has the best smartphone camera out atm its really nice!
3.The speakers on the GS3 are EASILY the loudest/best I have ever used.
4.umm you mean like LTE?
5.Awesome battery life! Especially when you start installing custom roms, kernels, UV, etc.
Now to buy a straight out GS3 it's pretty expensive (about $500-600ish?) so you will have to be patient. Everyday search amazon, ebay, craigslist, xda marketplace etc. Like I said you have to be patient, sometimes you will find something in your price range within a week, sometimes it can take over 1 month. Eventually though I am sure you will find something that satisfies you! I got lucky with my GS3(i747), I found one in about 2 weeks FOR ONLY $290 and it was practically brand new! It only came with the phone itself, and no battery door cover but for $290 that is still an amazing deal(probably best deal I have ever found tbh).
Good luck on your search for your phone!
