[MOD][HOWTO] Adjust your hardware keyboard's default language - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey guys,
Currently we have a very annyoing problem with the hardware keyboard. Imagine the following situation:
You have a country specific keyboard layout (like a german QWERTZ layout)
You don't want to use the pre-installed ASUS on screen keyboard
What happens now is the following:
You deselect ASUS' on screen keyboard
As soon as you do this, your hardware keyboard loses its custom layout and reverts to a generic QWERTY one
To "solve" this issue you normally need to do the following:
Switch to the localized ASUS keyboard once you dock your Prime
Switch back to the keyboard of your choice once you undock the Prime
I think I don't have to say that this behaivior is less than optimal.
I played a bit around with the system files and found out how to change the default keyboard layout to what ever you want to have.
Here is the result:
I don't need to ever select the ASUS keyboard again
I still could use the ASUS keyboard to change the keyboard layout (I could change the hardware layout to QWERTY for example)
I finally don't need to hassle around with different keyboards anymore
Okay now enough of that, here is how to do it:
First some facts:
We need to replace 2 /system files, so this may break any further OTAs
AFAIK the files weren't changed since the first update and normally those files aren't subject to changes, so the risk of breaking OTAs is not that high
If you do a backup of those files you can always restore that backup before applying OTAs
Requirements:
A rooted Prime
Some app to edit the /system partition (e.g. "Root Explorer")
The ability to read the entire post and to follow my instructions
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage - software or hardware - you may do to your Prime. Please don't do this mod if you have no idea what I am talking about.
(I used Root Explorer for this, so if you use another app the steps may be a bit different)
So let's get started:
Undock your Prime (just to be sure)
Open Root Explorer and go to "/system/usr/xt9/keychars/"
Copy the file which represents your keyboard's language (e.g. qwerty-de_DE.kcm for my german Prime dock)
Now go to "/system/usr/keychars/" (note the missing "xt9" in the path)
Mount your system as "read/write" (the little button with the caption "Mount R/W")
Rename the file "asusdec.kcm" to "asusdec.kcm.bak"
Paste your own "qwerty-xy_XY.kcm" file here (the one you copied before)
Rename that file to "asusdec.kcm"
Go to "/system/usr/xt9/keylayout/"
Now copy the file you want to use ("qwerty-de_DE.kl" for my german dock) (the file is called the same as the last one you copied, only the extension is different)
Go to "/system/usr/keylayout/" (again the "xt9" is missing from the path here)
Rename the file "asusdec.kl" to "asusdec.kl.bak"
Paste your own file and rename it to "asusdec.kl"
Reboot
After the reboot, dock your Prime and test the results. If you did everything right, you should be able to select a non ASUS keyboard while keeping your custom keyboard layout.
If you want to revert the changes, just delete the two files we changed and rename the backups back to the original name.

THX for this MOD
That is right what i needed.

Wow. Are you guys the forum police? He posted in the wrong spot. Who freakin cares... Sometimes I think it would do alot of people good to just get out and have some fun.
edit... moderator, feel free to delete this post as it is most assuredly off topic.

Works Great, thanks.

Thx for this great mod worked like a charm! And its easy to revert to stock if an OTA comes around. Renaming some files isnt that much of a hassle.
Now which onscreen keyboard would you guys suggest? The original android one is ok but i'm missing the numbers.

Worked!
Excellent, thanks! Now I keep my Swiftkey when not docked. Why Asus is forcing us to use their keyboard is beyond me.

Swiftkey doesn't really work very well for me. it glitches up massively when trying in polaris office. But when undocked works fine. wierd....

This worked fine for me until I did the last firmware upgrade. I use Swiftkey as my soft keyboard and now I get its suggestions at the bottom of the screen all the time. Like the user above Polaris Office doesn't work at all when docked.
How can I get rid of Swiftkey when docked and use the true Asus keyboard then, is it only possible with an app?

Thank you !
Thank you very much for your help, the keyboard problem was really annoying! Now, it works really well.

This works on tf101also but the existing filenames had no d in them
"asusec.kcm"
"asusec.kl"
Many thanks

Really cool! I'll try it as soon as I get home!
But one question remains for me: on Chrome my keyboard doesn't work properly. I have special characters, since I'm Hungarian, with the proper localized keyboard. My chars (eg. á, ő, ú, etc.) work perfectly in every app, even in the stock browser, but not in Chrome! Really weird stuff! Don't an of you have any ideas why that happens?

Doesn't work on Jelly Bean Any hints
Thanks
Got the kcm and kl file from an old rom and it works now

For those who searched for the "old" keychars, keylayout and xt9 files, I've attached them here.

[Q] Using the default "home portal" with TNTLite?

Forgive my ignorance here. I bought the GTab from Woot solely to learn about Android and tablets, I just got my ipad2 and thats the one I planned on getting the most use out of, but honestly I thought it would be good to have an Android tablet in the house.
Of course, the default OS was painful, so I put on TNTLite and ran some apps and was pretty happy. I haven't used it much since. I am still trying to find a way to stream video to the tablet (and hopefully someday out to my TV, to retire my laptop).....and am not sure which app to use. For Ipad I can use Air Video Server.
BUT ANYWAYS...
The default portal screen on TouchNTap was, I thought, pretty cool....weather, news links and time with your apps available on the bottom row.
Tell me, is there a similar type of portal app you can use on the Gtab? Is there a way to make it just be an alarm clock or a picture frame until you pick it up and want to start using it as a tablet?
TNTLite is cool, and I installed ADWLauncher (I think that is the name), but all I am seeing is now a windows desktop-looking thing. Can you use that front-end with TNTLite? Or is it just adding widgets to a "home screen" like a clock, calendar, web browser, etc.
Thanks!
Take a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854175
If you want to alter TNT Lite to your liking, it's actually fairly straightforward - once you understand the layout.
When that firmware is run, it layers on a 100% stock image first, then I make the alterations later. You can alter either the updater-script (where the deletions are) or the /system folder (where the additions are) to tweak it to your liking. For example, if you want to keep the TNT launcher, just delete this line from the updater-script:
Code:
delete("/system/app/HomeScreen.apk");
That would add the TNT homescreen back, on the next firmware flash. This is just an example.

You don't need a "similar" portal app unless you just want it. Just sideload (move the files from your PC to the sdcard via USB cable and then click/install the apks from the sdcard) the original HomeScreen.apk, Weather.apk, Clock.apk, and News.apk - then use the Home Switcher to switch to the Viewsonic HomeScreen - if you want that to be your default.
I've done this since TNTL 2.0 because I also like the look and the options.
Other apk's that will fit into the default HomeScreen package are GroceryList and TaskManager. MediaPlayer will also go into the Viewsonic HomeScreen.
In case you didn't back up the original VS default portal files - I've attached them.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes the original VS portal.
Thank you
I'm going to be messing with this to see if I can get it to work......however, I do have one question, and its off topic:
Is there any way to put the Gtab into sleep mode the way that an ipad goes to sleep, so you just tap the screen to wake it up? Or have it so that way it has a permanantly on clock display or a rotating picture frame function with clock?
I'd like to buy the dock for it, but not if I have to hold the power button to wake it up all the time, I realize its a little thing but it is somewhat an annoyance.

Pseudo-EN Keyboard Layout for CM

Hi,
First, again, sorry for posting it here. Still don't have permission to post on development forums (need 10 posts to do that).
I was looking for an English Keyboard Layout for CM but I couldn't find one on the thread. So, I downloaded the German (the one without specific german letters mapped to blue/sym keys) and started hacking on it a little..
Well, I could swap Y and Z keys, but then I had to press blue+Z to enter number 3. I tried changing another things too without any success.
Is there anyone who can help me accomplish this things:
- Important things:
1- Fully swap Y and Z letters, letting me enter number 3 pressing Z.
2- My comma ',' key prints an apostrophe. I wanted to make it print comma.
- Not so important:
3- Make blue+C who actually has an apostrophe on it prints an apostrophe (that's not so important because I'm brazilian. We don't use apostrophes to much in here =P. And it's my girlfriend's phone, she is 99% of the time typing portuguese =P)
What can help, maybe, someone who provides a layout there, can point me where to find the original keychars.kcm. The update.zip comes with this file in a binary format, making it difficult to change =/
I have the same problem with keyboard, but I can use with this problem.

[REQUEST] Stock xperia keyboard for Cyanogenmod 9

Hi,
My phone is Xperia Mini Pro. A few days ago I switched to CM9, the difference is huge, everything comes faster, smoother generally better, because anyone who is considering the change I suggest to move as soon as possible!
But this is not what this post was to be in CM9 default standard keyboard with Android. The most I miss T9 keyboard layout, a notice on the status bar (or typed text 'will be introduced from a large or a small letter', and that the normal characters or special characters [the blue button on the keyboard physical]) or it can be simply zbackupować with stockowego ROM CM'a and move on? If not, it is certainly a different way.
I also tried to copy the stockowego textinput-tng.apk to /system/app and chmod 644 it, but does not work, also tried to copy the files from the stock rom on CM9:
screenshu.com/static/uploads/temporary/h5/1a/70/iezd71.jpg
screenshu.com/static/uploads/temporary/j4/5o/gu/kdf47x.jpg

screenshu.com/static/uploads/temporary/md/je/ha/3lip2h.jpg
screenshu.com/static/uploads/temporary/qh/hk/6t/pt2pp9.jpg
unfortunately to no avail, I know that this subject was already discussed in this forum, on the other also but did not find any specific solutions.
Can I have someone that has adapted keyboard from stock rom for CyanogenMod 9? Thanks in advance for your help, besides, I think not only me that is useful.

The same for me with Mini Pro.. Also, I cannot find a way to have word completion enabled with the physical keyboard, so I always have to type the whole words. Also accented letters are a lot faster to type if the word completion is available, as long-pressing a letter sometimes does not work. Finally, also the "world" key (which I often use in the original rom to change input language) is not working with the normal Xperia S keyboard I found in another thread. Naturally, that is beacuse the Xperia S has no physical keyboard =)
I am planning to follow your path of copying some files from the original rom, but I don't think it will be so simple =(
Has anyone found a solution?
Unfortunately I have not found it. In this forum, and the other is a lot of posts on this issue but no solution. ;/
I have found this thread on a new rom based on the stock ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852916
At the second post, the author links to a "mini pro stock keyboard": we could try that and see how it goes!
I will try this week end and post the results =)

Hi, I update this thread because i have the same problem.
Is there a way to have the stock xperia mini pro keyboard working on FXP138 CM9??

Otherwise, is there a keyboard on the market that is 100% working with physical keyboard of xperia mini pro?
Thanks in advance

no way personally I use swiftkey3, it gives you autocorrection for phys keyboard, but still no statusbar icon and the globe icon had same function of shift (you must choose qwerty usa, with qwerty ita you'll get incorrect layout)
(on my sk17i sym key give work fine on both standard and swiftkey)
sorry for poor english

I'm also looking for the stock keyboard.
xperia pro (sk16i) with cm 9.
currently use smart keyboard. Work quite well. But if i use hardware keyboard sometime the key indicator (shift or FN) doesnt work with every apps (eg. messaging)
I also tried "Xperia S keyboard.zip" from some post before, with out any effect.
I think there is no way to get working keyboard app for the physical keyboard on CM9 and CM10. Sooo saaaaad
I think...
This might be it (although minimal chance of autocorrect for HW-keyboard really working)...
Stock Xperia S keyboard port for CM9
I am backing up my phone as we speak, getting ready to flash CM9 and this keyboard... If it works I will report back (I'll report back regardless, but gimme a day for testing).
[EDIT]
Works, but now I realize this is as reported in many other places; SYM-key IS working but the menu it brings up is different, T9 for portrait-layout works, blue alt-key and CAPS indicator not working as well as no auto correction. Still better than after initial install but not good enough...

Mini pro and original Xperia Keyboard with CM9.1

Good afternoon everyone.
I've recently installed on my Xperia Mini Pro the new Cyanogenmod 9.1.
It's more than brilliant but lacks of a very important feature... I'm not able to use the onscreen t9 and the hardware keyboard has not spellcheck or autocomplete feature.
for the first problem, i've solved with a zip flashable file containing xperia S keyboard and i managed to have t9 keyboard in vertical and qwerty keyboard in landscape, with a perfectly working autocomplete and spellcheck...
But when i use hardware keyboard I hate I cannot have the spellcheck or autocorrect, because italian is very reach in stresses and it's disappointing using a long press key every time i have to strees a vowel... with the stock rom i just typed the word and it got corrected automatically.
Also, the sym key shows me just symbols and would be great to have all the smiles back like in the original firmware.
I've found a system folder from 4.0.4 original firmware of Xperia mini pro [SK17i_system_folder_4.1.B.0.431.rar if u wanna google it] so I would be able to post here all the keyboard files that could add the original t9, autocomplete and spellcheck both of on-screen keyboard (so we don't have to use the Xperia S files) and expecially for hardware keyboard...
Can anybody help me?
I want to stay with Cyanogenmod 9, but if I dont find a solution i will be forced to go back to 2.3.4 to have the original keyboard back
Thank you so much for help!
Hello there, I had the same problem as you but luckily I found a solution to that problem.
I can't attach the .zip cause it's too large, but here is the link to the thread containing the keyboard: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725050
Look for "Xperia S ICS keyboard", download it, flash it via CWM, select in settings, voila you have a T9 keyboard that should satisfy if not all, some of the things you were looking for.
It works on my SK17i CM9.1 100%
Press thanks if this helped you.

it would be the best if somebody could do that kind of file with original Mini pro keyboard (onscreen and physical)... it would make CM9 the perfect rom...

Hello to everyone in this forum.
I have the same issues. I'm Italian too.
The same here in germany. Swiftkey has a nice replacement feature, but it misses swipe in vertical mode. It would be nice to be able to change keyboard depending of HW-Keyboard status. If Keyboard is out, use Swiftkey, if its in, use Xperia-Keyboard. maybe this could be solved with Tasker, but I didn't test right now.
edit: I tested with tasker and needed an external plug in, - It worked! but this solution doesn't make me happy as Swiftkey cannot handle the extra keys like ? and ' right.
+1
does anyone have a proper fix for the hardware keyboard on the Xperia Mini Pro, Including the symbol and globe keys?
thanks
Maybe we need a porting from the original stock rom. Is there any way to extract the files from the original rom? I also tried to backup the original keyboard with Titanium but I fail
Same issue here.
I am italian, too.
For a language as ours, it's very important having predictive text in hard keyboard.
Is there any workaround?
Please reply!
I've tried some keyboard's apps but no one satisfied 100%
Thanks.
Any news?
Any workaround? What keyboard do you use at the moment? :cyclops:
I use Swiftkey, but I'm not satisfied 100% yet.

anything new?
I currently try SwiftKey Flow beta? With swipe. IT seems to. Have. IT all

THIS is a simple but the ONLY reason because I can't handle with cyanogen.... i'm a great fan of this project but i really miss the keyboard (which is a must for a mobile like mini pro)... so I'm still so sad that nobody was able to fix this problem ALL the mini pro user have
I think i'm on the right way to use the keyboard but i still need some help from experienced developers.
I've managed to install the keyboard but still it crashes.
I dumped all the system folder from the lastest Mini Pro firmware (4.0.4 built 567 if I remember well) in a zip and installed from recovery all the files related to some keywords (used the search function of a mac).
I've used
- key
- keyboard
- input
- text
- emoticon
- emoji
- qwerty
- font
- slide
and something like that (I can't remember all the keywords but i think they are all)
Anyway as i wrote before when i turn on the keyboard it keeps crashing without even starting (i can never see the keyboard on screen and with the slide keyboard).
I think it's great i managed to install but i have not the right experience to know what files are missing or are disturbing the keyboard...
Does anybody have a clue? (unfortunatly i cannot post this post in the developer rooms)
I will attach soon the zip file i'm testing on Cyanogen mod 9.1.
(I've added TrackId to see if the installation process was ok, just while developing this zip file)
Tell me what, according to you, would be good to add for the keyboard
Have you set all permission properly? Because if not it can't work. And you would have to take the textinput-tng.apk (not sure how it's named) from /system/app
But I don't know if this will ever work, I hope so :good:

[MOD] Disable SwiftKey Prediction

This module permanently disables prediction/autocomplete/completion bar within SwiftKey keyboard.
Future versions/updates of SwiftKey might break this mod. Tested working agains versions 5.0.1.87, 5.0.2.4, 5.0.3.26, and 5.0.4.93. EDIT: No longer true as of v0.2 which should be futureproof.
Disable SwiftKey Prediction is available from Xposed Module Repository (source).
It also disables flow. Is that suppose to happen?

It is because whole prediction is disabled and flow depends on it. Solution for using flow would be only hiding the bar (while prediction/completion would still work) but I have no real intention for this as I don't use it and to get rid of all prediction effects, disabling it fully is still required. Maybe Suggestions Toggle would work better for you (but I don't use flow so I don't know...).
@moneytoo thanks for the mod. Now its perfect.
Anyway to make long press space to toggle keyboards like Google stock keyboard?
I'm just curious but why did you want to create this mod? Prediction is the main attraction of SwiftKey. I mean, otherwise I would use any other keyboard. Just wondering and no offense meant.

I want a nice looking black/dark keyboard (the stock one on my S5 is light). My primary language is Czech which (thanks to Czech declension) can never work as good as in English. I do not write texts anyway - I use it mainly for entering urls in browser so I prefer not to waste screen space as I want to see more search suggestions in browsers (or addresses history) etc.
I hate to be one of those people that asks irrelevant things in a thread, but since you are familiar with the inner workings of the Swiftke.apk, I figured you might be able and willing to help. The one thing I dislike about swiftkey is the auto-space feature that it has. Meaning after you type in a word, it automatically adds a space after. This is a huge pain in the butt when it comes to entering passwords and usernames. Do you know what file(s) in the apk would be responsible for this behavior? I could probably figure out how to change it, I just don't know where to look.

i thought the same when i saw this thread. that is pretty much the whole point of the keyboard (and flow for rapid typing), unless you only use it swiftkey for colorful themes lol, there are far better keyboards than swiftekey if you're only interested in themes. IMO
but you can disable the annoying automatic word correcting as i mention below (which is an annoying) while still keeping the prediction bar (which is very good just to use as spell checker too).

that only happens (i think) if you have "complete the current word" or "always insert a prediction" selected in settings >advanced>spacebar completion mode. i have mine at "always insert a space" and ironically it doesn't insert a space only when you select a word from the prediction bar.
you can keep the prediction bar enabled and stop auto prediction and adding a space (where words are automatically corrected in input field you didn't want) by selecting the option i mentioned above.

For 1 whole year I regularly contacted Swiftkey and asked to fix this they never fixed it, issue is Swiftkey is taking COPIED text as TYPED text. It should take typed words only (this is big reason behind inaccurate/unneeded word prediction). Could you do something about it?
Below is the email i wrote to Swiftkey:
There is one ANNOYING feature I found in Swiftkey. I checked this twice thrice and informing you. The problem is: Saving the words what we type is good but BAD/WORST part is, it also saves the words when you just copy text from other sources for example: Copying random text or paragraph from webpages, Ebooks and Documents. Those text are NOT TYPED by the user and those words get copied to internal dictionary of Swiftkey which I don't like to be predicted while I type. I copy some stuff from webpages to read it later but it doesn't mean that I like all the words in that copied text and it should not add in internal dictionary of swiftkey. Please fix this ASAP.
P.S. I have English and Hindi language packs installed. Experiment yourself. Just copy the below words in text file and save it. I would never use the below words ever. While typing, long press on the below words and hit 'Do not predict again'. It will not predict. But when you open the text file you saved and select and copy those words, they will simply added to the dictionary of Swiftkey and you'll see them come across while you type.
Words:
chateau chatman chatham zuzana zyban zuma zu beau beaune beauregard
i always wanted to use Swiftkey because it looks good, but i hated the fact you can't turn prediction off. THANK YOU.
there is one minor bug though. the keyboard size gets messed up after changing the screen rotation. it ends up being either too tall or too short?
using it on stock-ish Note 3.

It seemed to me kinda weird one time I rotated it with keyboard opened... I see it now and will check it.

tnx, i hope you can fix it
I thought it was the obfuscated method name but it is still the same. Seems like this was caused by later versions of SwiftKey - my two months old version is ok. So it's either waiting whatever new version will fix that or go through changes within apk and attempt to fix "their" bug. I will probably try in the next few days but no promise - it's really low priority for me.
thanx
thank you so much, i hated that bar. Finally. I don't know why they don't offer that option. They have that option in ios. It makes me angry how unthoughtful people are.
Swift Keyboard Rotation Bug
I absolutely love this mod mixed with the fact that you can change the size of keyboard. Both of these combined allow me to go landscape and still be able to see conversation while typing. Same bug though when I rotate it resizes to all sorts of weirdness. Would be like the greatest thing ever if you could fix. I know you said low priority but I would soooo donate if u could figure out.
This Mod disables "Quick Period with double tap spacebar" as well. I reckon that is not supposed to happen.
not working on 5.1.0.60
this mod doesn't work for me anymore on the new version 5.1.0.60
Great fix but unfortunately doesn't seem to work on latest version of SwiftKey, tried to downgrade to 5.0.5.95 but can't install previous version somehow .. Waiting for some update mate
