Screen is DOA (RMA completed - 16/2/12) - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi
I was so excited to get my Prime today. My folks got it in the Netherlands during a business trip. I am in South Africa.
Update: For those saying I should ship it back. I got a quote. 5 days delivery, 1 way cost R3000 (around 350 euros).
Update 2 (29/01/12): Got the receipt from my parents. It appears the reseller does have a local presence, so I will try go via them first.
Update 3 (30/01/12): The reseller also did not offer any viable solutions. Tablet now booked in ASUS Service Centre for repair. No ETA given.
Update 4 (07/02/12): Repair center still waiting on ETA for parts delivery. They are also trying to get a replacement, but it seems they cannot find stock. Asus Support failing to respond to any emails I sent them.
Update 5 (09/02/12): Still no word from either LetMeRepair (repair center) or ASUS. Status remains the same. Posted a message on the ASUS FB wall. Hopefully someone will answer me.

For the record: https://www.facebook.com/ASUS/posts/243226189093666
Update 6 (9/02/12): After getting no response from ASUS yet again. I contacted the escalations manager at the repair center. She was very helpful and get the vendor manager of ASUS (I guess this one the top ASUS person in South Africa, as they dont seem to physically exist otherwise). The vendor manager told me ASUS is still waiting on parts, and still cannot give an ETA on when these part will be available. I told him I found this shocking as they could not even found out a lead time for spare parts like pretty much any electronic supplier does. He told me that he will contact me the next morning with an answer or possible alternative solutions. (Side note: this RMA out of stock issue is becoming more prevalent now and have seen the same story a few times on this site now)
Final Update (16/02/12): After lots of *****ing and chasing ASUS, I finally got my unit back. They used an LCD from another returned unit. 1 dead pixel in top right corner, but otherwise fine. Minimal lightbleed.
So turning on, I got this:
Honestly, I am shocked at the standard of quality control of ASUS. How can this happen?
Nevermind the fact, they will likely only repair this, seeing as I am not able to fly back to the Netherlands to get it replaced. And that it will likely take months for them to fix it...
I will take it into the ASUS service centre to see how screwed I am...

That really sux. Did you try a reboot or factory reset to see if it gets cleared? Does your device have any signs of being dropped or any damage of any kind?

Seriously - is it really necessary to open a thread for every damaged Prime? Return it, get your money back.
Fin.

Damaged? Nothing is damaged, it is just broken.
Dont you have better things to do?
Edit: Feel free to pay me 2000 euro for a return flight.

No damaged whatsoever.
Applying light pressure at the bottom of the line on the bezel area makes some vertical lines go pink.

Why 2000 euro for return flight? Package it up and overnight it back to the store and get a replacement overnighted back to you at max 5% of that 2000 euro plane ticket!

Okay, I understand there are a certain amount of problematic Primes out there. I understand Asus support can be a painful process to go through as well. However, I am starting to get annoyed with everybody and their brother making a new thread when they get a defective Prime. Simply return your Prime to the store if you're not satisfied with it and be done with it.
Thank you.

I disagree, statistical information about a brand new but flawed product is important for potential consumer information. if you're not concern just move on please.

Given less the fact that probably less than 1% of TP purchasers know this site exists, it gives a good rough measure of the failure rates. Remember the launch version of the 360? 25% failure rates are about 5x's industry standards for electronics failure rates. Seems we're looking at some similar situation with the Prime. If you don't like the thread, skip it.

Trying to estimate failure ratios and rates from a message board is not scientific and doesn't even follow standard methods of gathering statistics...
The only way to even estimate the real failure rate if is ASUS releases their numbers, since they have the raw data.

This isn't a support forum. you got a defective product. Talk to your retailer and get a replacement. Why make a thread about it? What are you expecting anyone to say other then "sucks, get a new one or a refund"

this happened with my tf201. If i held/applied pressure to bottom right of tablet, wholre screen would fade white, almost like someone put a 75%opacity paper over top of the screen. it got returned and Bestbuy shipped out new one

RMA has been completed. First post updated.

Wow, they didn't even test it? Or else it happened in transit which I doubt.

Prime Manufacturing Rumors

Scratch all that as well, here's a quote from a Best Buy employee in this thread:
Quixion2008 said:
As a current Best Buy employee(Senior at Purdue University(Seasonal employee)...(the same on helping a good amount of this forum get grey docks ahead of schedule) I believe I can shed some light on this issue. Today while using our inventory management software (RSS) I looked up the grey 32 TF201. In BEST BUYS system the sku has been DISCONTINUED. This generally happens when we are no longer receiving that particular model of a computer or tablet physically in stores in the future. This is, in my opinion, not what is going on. As most have noticed the grey 32 prime has been pulled from BBY.com. Only the CG is even on the site. The grey was taken down and given a "secret sku" that was to be used for those who had pre ordered a CG and were given the opportunity to switch to grey. This sku has gotten out to the forums and has been being used to order grey 32 primes online through BBY.com. I suspect BBY is changing the sku so this can no longer be done, and giving the prime a dedicated sku for in store availability which should be occurring within the next 2-3 weeks.
The prime is here to stay.

Also, I never knew this forum was fulled with /b/tards. Shoulda inb4 OP is a troll.
Scratch all that, just talked to a support rep. They're done manufacturing the First model of it. They've got a second model they're planning to roll out this month (just like ICS would be available before the end of the year). That would explain why Best Buy assumed it's done, discontinued the first version of the TF201. Perhaps a TF211? Feel free to call 'em up and ask if it's been discontinued. They should respond with something along the lines of Lol new model! Or something to that effect. Waiting for a supervisor to call me up tomorrow.
Just got off the phone the Best Buy.com floor manager, and *apparently* Asus is no longer manufacturing the Prime. I wanted to return it for a REPLACEMENT, and nobody could answer one simple question: Do you have one in stock to replace it with? I got to the supervisor and he simply told me it was done, gave me a direct number to Asus. He also told me to file an RMA and that Asus would try to fix it, and if they couldnt, then I'd get a same or better one.
Great.
I'm calling Asus to see what's up. I'll update the OP with more info. I want my damn Prime fixed...
I'd appriciate it if someone else called Best Buy to see if this true. Get to a live person, and ask for their supervisor. The guy I got was 'Micheal'. Be sure to ask for his name to see if it's the same guy. Thanks
lol.
Sure
that's because thing is littered with some minor manufactured defects.
oh well, at least it will go up in value
also I bet HASBRO had something to do with this too. Glad I got mines before the court ordered junction was put in place.
LOL, please don't tell me your gonna believe this? Then Asus will probably also be done.
Just delete useless threads like this, thanks.
One thing you should learn pretty quickly is to never believe anything a dumb store manager or CSR tells you.
Im guessing they think they are talking about the OG transformer.
Or did we bully Asus somuch it just up and quit the whole thing?
bwaaa ha ha WTF? BB employees are like VZW employees, I often know more then they do about their own products, thus I don't trust comments like this 1 bit.
i don't know guys, i think the Best Buy.com floor manager is a pretty reliable source...you didn't get to become "floor manager" for nothing....
Maybe the BB floor manager is sick n tired of dealing with all the botched prime exchanging?
I know I would be by now.

Yeah, probably the OG Transformer.
How the heck would a BestBuy *floor manager* get wind of something faster than Endgaget, ITworld, Anandtech, The Verge and the rest of the technocrat blogosphere?
There is a higher probability of Bigfoot doing the Mambo in Time Square
He probably meant the TF101 original Transformer. It makes perfect business sense to phase out the TF101, now that it's replacement is coming to market.

Are you KIDDING ME??? Best buy has launched more misinformation that the Counter-Spy's did in WWII.
I had one "E-Commerce VP tell me that ASUS Hasn't RELEASED the dock yet, it will be out at the END OF JANUARY, LOL! I had to tell him that my co-worker HAS one from Best Buy sitting on his desk, and he still doubted me. I had to point him to one of the "Dock Sources" thread here at xda.

if anything bby doesn't have a proper in store stock date so their system is screwed up. no one on CS or at the store level has any idea of what's going on as far as manuf or actual stock beyond what their inventory system shows them, and that system is a piece of crap (unless they updated it significantly after i quit from there, which i doubt)
the only actually plausable thing one can take from this is they are for some reason giving the new batches a different sku and discontinuing the old one.

Yeah best buy also told me that Asus wasn't coming out with the Prime back in december.
Major bugs, horrible design flaw and dishonest sales tactics mixed together with a name that is clearly ripped off from hasbro will lead to its demise.
Prime could have been a real winner but Asus just couldn't live up to it.
They will probably stop making the current bugged out and defective units and redesign it with a plastic back and rename it to the Asus Tranny.

Totally new issue, and I am done with this piece of cr*****p.

I had first noticed that while docked I had this flickering while closing the tab. It appears there is something totally wrong with this unit. Today I was playing zen pinball and i pressed hardly for the right flipper and this screen flickering again. Starting with the bezel when I apply pressure to the right bottom part of the tab the screen flickers into white. I don't think it is a common issue.

Solved. End of topic, mod please close it.
I find I can replicate screen flickering just by tapping the recent items button after having a dozen apps/pages stored there.
A reboot fixes it but it comes back later.

Ok, every product has a small percentage of defective devices. Besides the other issues, THIS is that small group. Return it, it's that simple. They will send you a new one. No need to create a topic to vent your anger when there is a very simple solution.
Wait wait wait.....no nobody is allowed to complain??? If it's a valid concern that doesn't seem right.

Mine dID something like this after exiting a game. This was a couple of days after ICS installed. I did a couple of reboots and it disappeared. Never did it before ICS and has been good since. I marked it up to ICS and program issue. Prime is working great now and even the same game works fine. Hopefully it is something similar.

What is wrong with people who throw flames to someone complaining about an item spent that much. Don't worship companies which screw you with defective units, false advertisement and all. Then you become not different from Apple worshippers.

The Complaint System Works
How quickly everyone forgot about the bootloader, the whole Prime community sang the loudest compaint campaign that made Asus change their mind about the lock. Let's give those with valid reasons the room to voice their concerns, not getting any answer or support will only lead to fans losing their Prime esteem and leaving the fold.

Up today I hated Apple. My next tablet will be Ipad3.
I am just joking. I'll wait for the next Samsung. I am not an Acer guy, and although I have huge respect for Asus in the PC area (for the last 17 years my mainboards had always been Asus, 7 note and netbooks including TM91 and I recently bought the Zenbook) i lost my trust in the Android arena. I returned TF1 in a week because of terrible light bleeding, and now this. I thought mine was perfect except GPS but after 3 weeks of use now I discover the screen issue. I was really sorry to see Samsung not giving any hints about its next tablet in CES 2012. I had 2 Acer notebooks with huge problems, so it is not my brand. It means I'll wait some time and am very sorry for selling GTab 10.1.

It's definatly a valid concern. I'm just wondering why we have threads with people just venting. It's a VERY easy fix. If Asus didn't fix it, THEN he should vent, I would too. I just feel like Asus deserves the benefit of the doubt on this. Don't blast a company if you haven't even tried to work out the issue.

This is one of the most ignorant statements on this forum.
So when you bought your garmin nuvi which says gps on the box and you cant use it within 50 feet of any structures or trees, that to you is acceptable because the box does not state "it works".
GPS printed on my prime box, meaning GPS should work ALL the time, not on Sundays at 3pm wearing a blue tie and purple pants. GPS should work as GPS is expected to. Outside with clear skys should not display can not locate satellites...

Are you having prime nightmares?

I started to post this on someone else post but I think (instead of hijacking) it needs its own.
My experience has been a nightmare. I purchased my tf201 on Jan 5th and waited until the 15 before I received it; not too bad. I had poor wifi and no GPS even after upgrading to ICS and applying the OTA update meant to fix said issues so I called Asus and got an RMA. I tools them I needed it back by Feb 10th so I could return it to the place of purchaseif it wasn't fixed properly. They told me turn around time would be 7 days (first lie) and there would be no problem meeting this timeline. I mailed it USPS priority and tracked the package; they received it on the 24th but by the 26th still hadn't updated the status so I called and they confirmed they had it, said turnaround time was 7 days and and I would receive an update shortly. By Feb 1st they updated the status but showed they received it on Jan 28th (what? Reaching should the 24th and customer support confirmed this? Also the 28 was Saturday;a noon business day..) I called back on Feb 5th because the status hadn't changed online and was told they hasn't looked at it yet and admitted there was an use with that, then they said turn around time was 10-14 days but sine w were in that window the 7 day lie didn't matter.. I told them to just mail it back while I can still return it fixed or not and they said they'd elevate the issue;I would hear from them within 24 to 48 hrs later. On the 7th (48hrs later) I still hadn't heard from them and called them back. They couldn't tell me why no one contacted me, still had my prime and offered to elevate my issue again (what does that do? It did nothing last time..) I asked to speak to a manager and they got one. She told me they had 10-14 days from the tune they started looking at it NOT the time the received it (seriously? WTF?) I asked her if that meant they could sit in it for 30 days and then still have two weeks? She replied that 30 days would be unusual. I told her to send my prime back because I only had until the 10th to return it and I was very frustrated at this point. She asked why I would want it back induced and I told her I didn't I just wanted to get my $500 back while I still could, she said she'd elevate the issue with urgency and two day shipping, I would hear something within 24 hrs. As of today Feb 11th (well past the 24hr timeline), I still haven't heard from Asus and have past my product return date. I had the product in hand for less than 5 days and had to pay shipping to my house and to Asus, Ive purchased accessories and Im pissed. I feel like Asus has purposefully held on to my prime to keep me from returning it; this is crazy. I've tried everything I can think of and need help but what can I do? I tried sending a PM to Gary Keys but he was in Japan and never responded (i'm also a long time reader and first time poster here on XDA which may be why he hesitated to respond).. Thanks again
what's your nightmare?

I don't think that's true. From the number of RMAs being reported they're probably just overwhelmed. There have also been reports of delays because of parts shortages.
Do we even know if the TX facility is "Asus" or is it sub-contracted to a third-party? Yours is the third case of devices being logged-in well after they've been received. Repair centers are kind of like contact centers. "Time to repair" is one of the metrics they measure. So logging it in later than its received improves that metric.
I actually do have nightmares about my Prime. They pretty much appear as me flushing $500 down the toilet. A very dirty toilet that hasn't been flushed / cleaned in weeks.
Then again, I also have the good dreams where the Prime is letting me force my friend to watch the Matrix on her 60" LED TV in her living room.

I don't have time to write a book right now but its been a nightmare for me too Gary posted in one of my threads saying Asus will give me a refund but ill believe it when I see it..... Good luck bro
Traditionally, I have almost always had bad experiences when dealing with RMAs. Thankfully I haven't had to send my Prime in for anything, but after hearing some of these stories I probably won't send mine in unless something major is wrong with it. (i currently have a tiny bit of light bleed on the right side of the screen, but it isn't enough to get me worked up about)
The only positive RMA experience I have ever had was with a wireless logitech keyboard that I was having charging problems with. I called logitech, explained the problem and they sent me a brand new one with expedited shipping. I simply had to return the one i was having problems with in the box that the new one came in. Logitech then inspects the keyboard that you send back to ensure the problem was not caused by misuse (water damage, accidental damage, etc.) If they do find something that was obviously caused by misuse (aka, you were trying to screw them) then they charge your credit card for the cost of a new keyboard. As a consumer I really appreciate this type of RMA as I was never without the keyboard. It would be nice if ASUS was doing something like this, but i suppose with the limited availability of the Prime to begin with, they don't want to send you a replacement Prime up front that they could have otherwise put on a store shelf and sold.
Edit:
Also, if I were in your shoes I would not have sent it in for RMA if you were still within your return window. I would have held on to it a little longer to see if the problems you were having are really that big of a deal. If the problems were that bothersome then you could have returned it to where ever you bought it for a full refund or exchanged it. It sounds like you did not have the Prime very long before you shipped it off to them to fix.
The more I think about it the more I think I should have just returned it. The wifi issue mattered to me because at distances grated than 15 feet from my router (wrt3800) I had no reception and I wanted GPS for apps like red box, urban spoon and shop savvy. What I can't believe its Asus would shop an item that fails in so many ways. AllI want is an item that works as advertised our my money back; is that too much to ask? My daughters 2 year old, $250 ViewSonic g tablet with flashback works better than this... If u could get the g tablet with a high Rez screen I would have never bought this hunk of junk.

I don't think that's true. From the number of RMAs being reported they're probably just overwhelmed. There have also been reports of delays because of parts shortages.

Even if they are just overwhelmed by RMAs, they should still be honest with their customers and regular updates by email or telephone if it takes longer then they promised. It's their own fault that this product has so many RMAs. it's obviously NOT READY to be release and they rushed it trying to be the 1st.
It was a big mistake by the OP for returning a product for repair when it's still within the return period to the place of purchase. Let the retailers deal with Asus and maybe then it'll put a dent in their profit. Money speaks louder. After hearing all these RMA horror stories, Asus services are not to be trusted and should be used as last resort. I would complain to their headquarters and send emails to the board members until someone takes notice. I have already returned my 1st Prime for reasons everyone are aware of. I'm waiting for either Samsung's version of the Quadcore or (don't hate me) Apple iPad 3.
sirnice is right, I should have never given Asus the chance to screw me w with this rma situation. Best buy would have taken the unit back easily enough.. My problem is I've bought Asus motherboards since the amd XP processor came out and have always loved Asus; I truly expected more...

I an able to see 12 says in my house and lock onto 10.I couldn't be happier with the final results. I went from the bk to the c1 sn..

RMA missing S/N sticker.

I just sent in my Prime to ASUS to fix a faulty HDMI port. Now my S/N stickers on my tablet came off and I'm wondering if that will result in ASUS not fixing my tablet. My S/N can be accessed by settings.

I really, really doubt that sticker would void your warranty in any way. Mine started to peel off after only 2 days... I ended up removing it cause it was just annoying.
There are more ways to determine the Serial Number of your Prime, one of them is a a sticker inside the Prime with the number.

you answered your own question
I read somewhere awhile back that a guy rma'd with same situation and outcome was that they did not repair it and sent it back to him due to there reasoning of tampering of the device. Even though it was under settings they still wouldn't repair it due to the SN sticker missing. Let us know how it goes.
Here is another thread regarding this. Looks like you are safe to rma without sn sticker from what others are saying.

That was only neweggs that wouldn't accept it cause they were flipping idiots
Asus should accept it even if there was no sticker on it
Thanks for the input... I we'd really worried about that when I sent it in...

well ur serial can also be found from in the about section so if they really want to know I am sure they can get it from there!

I remember the SN sticker came off thread.
My sticker started to peel off so I pulled it off all the way and put it in my box. I just RMA'd my Prime for my blacks turned read (see thread) and I put the sticker back on just because I didn't want any grief. It's peeled up on one side and will not stick back down. I don't think ASUS cares since it can be found in the firmware but I didn't want to take any chances of delaying my repair.

Snook321,
The sticker coming off will not void your warranty in any way. As the others have stated, the s/n for your device can be accessed via the settings in the tablet. Physical damage, FW modification, or opening it up yourself are some things that can void the warranty, but not a missing sticker.
Hope this eases your mind a little bit while it's in for service!
Tien
Again, Thank you all for the positive feedback. I feel ALOT better now.

Tien - Welcome, it's good to see you are here now and active. I have a question about RMA's.
I sent mine to Grapevine last week. My FedEx tracking shows it's been received and signed for Monday morning but when I go to the ASUS support site the status has not been changed to received. How long does it take the AUSU website to update. The reason I ask as I, amoung a lot of other users, worry about out $500 investments and like to know where they are if it is not in our hands.
This is what I'm using on the ASUS side to track my RMA:

It's stuff like this that you can help resolve. Timely updates to these type of things will go a long way in ASUS's customer service perception.
Thanks and again Welcome.

Having done a 'few' returns of ASUS products to repair, I can tell you in advance that it really depends on the center doing the repairs. The Jeffersonville, Indiana, facility was horrible about logging repair work and I usually got the product back before I saw a change in the logs (truth be told, that facility was never good at actually repairing the products) but all the others seem to update either the day of, or the day after something with the status changes.
From past experience, the Freemont facility are the best at handling the repair update process (in fact, they were VERY detailed in everything they found), but I've had various users send in for repairs elsewhere, and all (but the Jeffersonville) the facilities are generally pretty good at updating it.
If they're like most repair facilities, the techs are given a couple devices that are listed as damaged, and depending on how easy it is to ID the problem, they'll prioritize the repairs. Obviously, if they have to test the device extensively to locate or verify a problem, you can expect extended repair time with your Prime. The UPSIDE to this, however, is a few of the repair techs, when unable to isolate a problem (but witness there IS a problem) will often just get it swapped out with a replacement unit. Obviously, I don't know the extent of your issues, but I'm sure they'll update it soon
Good info - Shadowlore
Asus RMA'd mine and even put a new sticker on it, this time it was clear and black not clear and white. That one promptly fell off God knows where.

A hammer through my prime

**** you Asus. $500 for this utter piece of **** tablet. I can't use gmail, email, maps, calendar, widgets, no games at all, pretty much ANYTHING, because everything just hangs after a few seconds. I've waited since last December, one update after the other, even went through a month long RMA, so far no sign of improvement. With the last bits of patience left I'll wait for the jelly bean update... and then if the prime still sucks - I'm going to punch a hole in this thing with a hammer, apply the baseball bat treatment office space style, and post pictures of it here.

Why shouldn't he be able to let off a bit of steam after waiting nine months for updates to fix his problems and going through a lengthy RMA process that still didn't fix the issues he's having. It sounds like his Prime is unusable in it's current state which is unacceptable for a $500+ product. I'm sure the stories of being upgraded to an Infinity or being given a full refund doesn't help the situation either, it saddens me to see other people given a get out of jail free card when I'm left with a product I find sub-par from a technical standpoint that I have no way of getting rid of.

I do think he was overly harsh against folks who have problems and cant help themselves. However I got the same weak wifi laggy prime everybody else with problems had, I just did something about it instead of waiting too long to return it and crying the blues. If my college student kid came to me and said I got some tech that is unusable as is but I waited too long to return it. I would ask her whose fault is that?
Instead of giving us that excuse on why you haven't applied a hammer to it yet due to wait on upcoming JB release.
Why don't you just go to ASUS and download the 4.1 JellyBean update for TF300 and install in on your TF201.
Whilst I agree that's what should happen, many people either naively hoped for future fixes and so kept it as it would be a struggle to get another at the time or like myself were unaware of some of the issues until it was too late (I had less than a week since I bought it abroad from a shop that doesn't operate over here). I wasn't able to compare the WiFi since I didn't know where the router was in the Villa I was staying in and had no other device to compare it to so was ignorant to the WiFi problem which I guess you could partly blame me for for not checking online. Many aren't willing to open their Prime's like you did (A move I may try if the WiFi is still poor after my RMA) to fix their issues out of fear of another issue coming up and then not being able to RMA it for that issue.
