just saw it, i hope they will unlock our device aswell with ics...

If they don't unlock all the razr devices and have a "special" version of the razr in the U.S. that comes unlocked from the factory, Motorola is going to catch severe backlash. Im talking major uproar.

Same I say here .. Very bad news and bad politic !!

This is VERY disappointing Moto! Why do you expect your customers to shell out another Euro 499 for an unlocked BL! Allow me to unlock my Razr's BL and keep your warranty!

I just saw this.... I can't believe they're not only release yet another razr already but they expect us to shell out even more money for something we should've had in the first place!

They have said an awful lot but Motorola press releases are VERY carefully written.
I bet everyone is passed by their legal department.
Motorola Europe on Facebook, posted on 29/12/11:
"the team is continuing to work through plans on an unlockable version for Europe and hoping to have details in the next week or so on when that might actually come to market. That's all we have for the moment but looks like details may be forthcoming."
We all got excited about that thinking that it meant they would be unlocking OUR bootloaders, but no, it meant they would try and get more money out of us by releasing a new phone.
Many years ago I used to work for Computer Associates, they didn't give a **** about the customers it was revenue and how to screw the most out of people. Every contract was watertight and we even had company's paying for software they couldn't use!
Motorola reminds me so much of those days.
As an organisation they stink!

I'll continue to develop on the Motorola RAZR (actually mine is bricked anyway) but after it, I'll never develop anymore for any Motorola device.
I feel like joked, I didn't think a company like Moto could do something like this. It's simply unbelievable.

Well for me too, this is the last moto phone i buy.
its a shame a company like motorola do this.
And the worst is google is behind this.

I dont think so, it means the moto is cheating us, and there is no way to unlock our current phones,
shame on u moto
sliced by my Razr on Tapatalk

Probably not; my guess is it will be nearly identical hardware with a different signature for the bootloader. I can sort of see this approach had it been done at release time; but after the fact this is a total cop-out. Given that samsung and htc do not have lock bootloaders on us carriers I think the only thing moto will listen to is a vote with the wallet...
So yea I chose the razr over the alternatives with this upgrade; but to be honest this crap with micro-versions (bigger battery, unlock bootloader,...) AFTER the fact combined with moto change in policy after the fact suggest this is not a company I wish to deal with in the future.
(after all they did claim they would unlock the bootloader by end of 2011; and it was htc who did the unlocking int hat period).

It says the will ACTIVATE with unlocked. Doesn't say they will give us an opportunity to unlock. Sneaky wording at least that's what I am taking from this until I see my x2 with unlocked BL or Verizon put a statement saying they will allow current users to unlock.

When is Motorola going to officially unlock all bootloaders?

I thought Motorola said back in June that they were suppose to provide a method to unlock bootloaders in Q3. I am still waiting for it so I can officially unlock it so I can still maintain my 4G connection.
This sucks because HTC already has a method to officially unlock bootloaders for certain phones with the list growing. Anyone know any news on this?

As it should be, if there is a possibility for wrecking your device by choice, HTC needs to know who is doing it so they don't have to pay for it - now that being said They should still want to help the person out if it is broken - especially if you can tell the brick or issue was not because of 3rd party software. I have heard HTC has been good about still replacing devices that are registered as unlocked.
Yeah, HTC kind of bastardized "unlocking the bootloader."

What exactly are the differences between unlocking the boot loader and rooting the phone? I've already rooted, but what exactly does unlocking the boot loader do?
Unlocking allows you to flash custom kernels and custom rom's. That's a pretty general statement seeing as I am new to the android scene, I'm sure someone else will elaborate.

100% true and coming from two other unlocked and rooted HTC phones, I can say (from personal experience) that they have awesome customer care.
I was actually sad that when I switched to Sprint there wasnt a decent HTC phone to choose other than the Nexus S - which was already becoming dated. Took a gamble with this motorola phone, so time will tell. So far, so good.

Sent from that su*kin-fu*kin piece of sh*t with a locked bootloader...
I think they probably will release it this year, cause the leap from ics to jb is a small one, just a few changes. So they should release it in one month not three. But this is trying on their side to get customers back. They won't admit it but they lost a lot of customers with their attitude. But it is too little to late. Interest in their new phones is virtualy non existent. Nobody is getting exited and that is a sign of bad things to come for the company. They will try evrything now even maybe to unlock the bootloader, but nobody cares anymore...most of us are just waiting for contract to expire and to move on. RIP Motorola.

I partialy agree with you BUT:
"So they should release it in one month not three." - we will be happy if they release it in three months instead of 9....
"even maybe to unlock the bootloader" - I am affraid that they are to proud to do something like this...
"but nobody cares anymore" - in fact there are users who doesn't care about rooting, roms etc and from that point of view are the motorolas phones good choice as the hw is great...
"RIP Motorola." - right... Motorola lost nearly all their powerusers....
I think it will happen & you are going to see a complete swing shift now that the Google takeover is complete and they have started putting their personnel in charge, as well as the lay offs etc.
I know they originally said that they would let it run as a stand alone but I think the company is too big a worldwide name for them to let fail, they would lose too much face if they let that happen. You also have people that have now not lost their job, bricking it that it may still happen and looking to make names for themselves within the company and in that environment anything can happen.
Biggest thing for me is for another Operation Mosh should be ran right now and by everyone that possibly can, with the noises they are making about upgrades, changes that are being made in the company, new phones and bootloader unlock tools etc, I think the time for a push on this has never been better to try accomplish this goal.
Or worst case scenario, they will do what they did with 2.3.6 update to nonefigs when ics update was announced. They will dump it , because ICS was so close , just now they will do it with 4.0.4.
Just joking (hopefully )
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I just hope something leaks so the devs can get into it, because my wife was still running official 2.3.6 on her RAZR, nothing custom ever flashed on it and when the notification came through for the OTA ICS update Australia it just failed at instal everytime, i even took it out of cache folder and attempted manual installs all different ways and just kept failing... Upside was, my wife finally let me root and flash her phone so she now knows what she was missing out on lol.
So basically, going by past experience Moto would be better off sending there updates direct to the devs so it can be fixed and improved

XT910 EOL

As the RAZRs begin to reach their EOL (end of life) product cycle (warranty finished, no more firmware updates, etc) why can't Motorola release an upgrade to unlock the bootloader for everyone.
I can't imagine the carriers would care and surely it would be a simple thing for them to do. They don't have to force this update on any users but simply make it optional for those that want it.
I upgraded to jb with the ota update and unfortunately lost root and to be honest have now lost interest in this phone. I was running AOKP V7 SP's version and it was running so well.
If Motorola techs happen to be reading this, then please consider it because at this stage I sure ain't interested in getting another Motorola and not because they are no good, far from it, it's because you restrict your users freedom with this phone. I will vote with my wallet and atm it won't be Motorola/Google.
Cheers, Teiva

Yeah true. Maybe the new X serious

Be interesting to see how all the new phones being released are with their bootloaders. I guess if I could pick up a RAZR HD or RAZR MAXX HD at a reasonable price I would consider getting one (even though they only come with 1GB system ram). My XT910 seems to run quite well with the OTA JB update. I do miss flashing roms though.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I doubt that they will change this policy
Bun for us who didn't update to EU JB and still have root Is still fun due to kexec
It's a shame considering these phones are no longer premium and flashing Roms makes the world of difference to the experience on them.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
So true. Motorola is losing customers because of lock bootloaders. I have heard so many people say never again to Motorola(in person & on forums). So if a unlocked bootloader keeps people interested especially at the EOL. I think it would be good for business.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
They are going to lose me for that very reason. All we ask is for the option to unlock our bootloaders. It's not something that everyone wants to do nor even knows about but that choice should be there for those that choose too.

My XT910 when I bought it was an awesome phone. Better then the galaxy S2s being sold at the time.
I'm not sure the reasoning behind Motorola's reluctance to unlock the bootloader on what can now be considered an old phone but it sure is going to impact my future decisions.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I think that Motorola wants to cut off from the "older" models and concentrate on models developed jointly with Google. You could see for a while like google too did not know which way to go with M. From what I know this phone x (or whatever he's called) is already unlocked bl (! Sic)
But do not despair, we already have good ports based on kexec and the issue of time is full of functionality. Thank you for the great developers from xda

We will see, but as far as I remember there was unlockable bootloaders on some Motorola phones. I hope somehow we will manage to use our RAZRs to the max For Milestone there is still active development (great @nadlabak) so I hope @dhacker and @Hashcode won't abandon us
Still nagging about the bootloader? We have kexec and imo that is enough. We should instead be grateful for devs like hashcode and dhacker who makes this phone awesome.
I disagree, Motorola should thank these dev's for keep their products still awesome and users should donate to the dev's for their hard work.

yes, you need rooted phone for kexec due to necessity of having a custom recovery to install if from
unlocked BL is not related to the root
I feel it's more of a carrier issue than Motorola, they're a company, they want money, referring to at least the US models, the carriers want locked bootloaders, they'll get them.
