Yes, you can install a maxx battery in your Razr! - Motorola Droid RAZR

For everyone wondering if the original razr can accept the razr maxx battery, the answer is YES! Ive taken both of mine apart, and it would appear that the battery compartments are identical, but the one on the maxx is deeper ofcourse. So then I took the rear cover from the max and put it on the razr, it fit perfectly but there was a gap between the sim card door and cover, the gap isn’t that bad as you can see in the pictures. So, if you can find a maxx battery and rear cover, do the mod! And for all asking if it would be worth it. The answer is hell yes!!!!

Is it possible, by chance, to swap battery doors as well? It would be great to make a full conversion using only OEM components.

Thanks! It looks great!!!

Yeah, because I am guessing that gap may hinder the water-proofing characteristics of the phone, perhaps?

i would assume so, howerver i dont know how to pull the door off...all moto did was add more plastic to surround the bigger battery on the maxx. everything else is identical. i took the cover from razr maxx and put it on the razr, it fit perfectly butit would push in to the battery. i think if you had the bigger battery the rear cover would be solid as on the razr as it is on the razr maxx.
if i can find the battery, or if anyone has a link, i will buy the maxx battery, cover and door. i want to try this out also...

Also to add, as I've mentioned here on the support forums:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/4c3288997e?post=4c3288997e&start=31
That Motorola should provide a send in service to upgrade your phone's battery - keeping your warranty - for a small fee (cost for parts, labor, and shipping; i.e. ~ $100?)
If I was in that scenario, I would certainly pay for that - beats shelling out for a new phone.

while i dont agree with your reason for motorola offering a battery upgrade on the droid razr. I DO agree that they should, they should do it for parts and labor, it would go a LONG way in customer relations.

Hmm... Guess I'll be on the hunt for a busted up RAZR MAXX here after awhile lol.

Excellent, thank you for being brave enough to try this out. Now we just have to hope that OEM parts will become available - sooner, rather than later.

this is the guide I used. Taking the cover off is very easy. When the batteries, covers and doors become available, the coversion is going to be very simple, I estimate 10 minutes max and you're done!

I too am interested in how the reassembly went. Did you use a tool like in the video? Did you feel any looseness in the covers after they were put back on?
I've heard of some people using just their fingernails to pry it open, and some guys who have had the covers not go on very tightly or fully clip in after they reassemble. It'd be nice to know the safest/least damaging method.

Damn that looks easier than half the xbox repairs ive done

I just ran my fingernail along the crack starting from the bottom right near the search button all the way to the top and the cover shaped up very easily. I didn't pull the tape off though. It snapped right back into place very easily and doesn't seem loose or anything. The razr isn't really waterproof it is water resistant. So opening the cover shouldn't really have any affect on that.

assembly is very easy too... the battery is covered in some real sticky stuff so it would be impossible to have a lose cover, and the edges snap back into place. it looks just like it did before i took it apart. on the razr i used the same tool that you see in the video, but for some reason i couldnt get it going on the maxx. so i got one of my daughter thin flat hair clips to start the unclipping and it was fine from there.

I've got the 2300 battery/case and random people ask me if my iphone was worth the money, lol.
So, no....I don't get made fun of for it, except for people calling me a tool for buying Apple products, lol.
Also, random people are stupid.
I actually like the feel of the phone better with the large battery. I've accidentally dropped the stock G1 a few times because it was clumsy to hold, haven't had that problem with the extended case.
Everyone is used to these smaller devices now, Nexus One, IPhoney, etc, etc.

We can safely expect our mobile devices in 2020 to be running smaller 10NM dual i-7 processors with 2GB of DDR3 RAM, Nvidea 9800GT technology, HD holographic display, 14MP camera, stereo speakers with small built in subwoofer, AN ACTUAL 3.5MM out, full keyboard [of course], HDMI out [already around on mobile phones...] and perhaps a small built in toaster oven.
Oh, and at a length and width of perhaps an i-Phone and a thickness of a couple credit cards stacked onto each other.

Mine worked fine and a lot of people laughed before i showed them my phone and how i could listen to Pandora ALLL day at work and still have battery lleft while their blackberrys only worked for 1hr max. jaja. but then again, the cases i got were so weak, i went through like 4 extended batt covers in weeks of using it, then i just started using superglue, tape, and not putting it in my pocket. By the way... anyone want to buy these 3 extra ext batteries i got laying around? lmao jk
I have an N1 now but I have 2400 battery for my G1 that I use ever so often. It's funny how people react to it, they are like WTF is that. Once they realize how much I use my phone (the way it was intended) they understand because they have battery issues and I don't; well with the g1 with the N1 that's a different story.
Also I have my g1 taped up to stop the creeking and the fake back I got for extended battery broke so its tapped as well so it looks like a hobo brick

2750 ext battery

Just picked up a 2750 oem extended battery. Doesnt add much thickness to phone really. It is noticable, but i think it gives it a better feel. I will post back tomorrow with battery life results.

I left mine at work. I will post some pics when I get there in a bit. It makes it alot thicker I think. I won't be using it unless I know I will be away from a charge for awhile.

It is too big and heavy with the extended battery. I will do everything I can to not use it.
just picked mine up for my Rezound today. 29 bux at verizon! i prefer the thicker back, as i did with my incredible. i could never use a phone like the RAZR....WAY too thin and light. i like to have a good grip on the phone so it doesnt slide out of my hand... im not a fan of paper thin phones at ALL.

question..i noticed on the stock cover, in the lower left of the back cover, theres 2 tiny holes. what are those for? becuase they aren't on the extended cover.
I would assume either mic holes or speaker holes in the original cover..
Only thing I'm not happy with is.. it seems its not flat on the bottom, so it wobbles when sitting on my desk trying to type.

I'm not positive that those are mic-holes. The stock back for this phone has all the stuff that people originally thought was for inductive charging, but it looks to me like they are just contact points that extend the antennas all the way to the back of the phone to avoid death-grip type outages and help with signal reception...
If I take my stock back off I can clearly see that there is some pseudo-metal material that makes contacts with two springy metal pieces on the back of the phone. Similar contacts are in five different places on the top, bottom, and sides of the back of the phone that correspond with metal on the inside of the cover.
That is my uneducated guess, of course, but I don't see ANY microphone-like items in that location. There is one mic-hole on the very bottom of the back cover, just below the "Back" softkey.

Pay for Plastic Back Cover? (Fail: Too Expensive)

I have access to a fabricator and could probably come up with a high-quality plastic back cover. I don't want to waste my time or yours if people aren't interested. Assume somewhere between $50-75 uninstalled and about $15 if you want to send it in and have a done by a h/w engineer (yes, I have access to those too). The more people order the cheaper they would be - the $'s above are based on about 100 people.
Some questions:
1) What color should the back be and why?
2) Should the back have matching metal ornamentation so it looks cool with the dock? This would be more $'s
3) Do you think the majority would DIY or want it done by a tech?
Can't promise anything but I'd certainly look in to it if there's enough demand.
If confirmation occurs, count me in.
if asus don't come up with a fix and it came to this (which i don't think it will) i would definitely want a clear back. would looks so awesome

You actually made me think of something. Maybe the whole back doesn't need to be replaced. Perhaps just a fairly large cut out with a plastic insert. I guess it depends how much clearance there is between the back and the components and where the antennas are located. I don't know how feasible it is to try and cut aluminium but I'll ask.
I'd be in provided it's confirmed that fixes the issue. Clear would be slick, but I'm not picky.
I would definitely be interested in this. You could make an entire market out of this. "Custom Transformer Backs." I'm still interested to see whether ASUS will handle this on their own however. If they don't, I doubt you'll have many customers with Transformer Primes in order to sell them.

But a full back replacement would be better if folks ever have to return prime for future issues? Could just put the old back on before returning
What if you just cut a round circle out of the back of the aluminum where the Asus logo is and install some plastic cover with an Asus logo on it. I think this could be a DIY, type of thing. Seller ships instructions on how to take backplate off, a template of where exactly to cut out and then have a plastic piece to install it. Or make it simple, and and replace the whole back plate.
If you can make it! Please make it right!! I'm willing to pay $75 if you can make it fiberglass (Gray) as bugatti car

bottom right if im not mistaken saw it on the transformer tear down but im just not in for this too risky to do this to my device, great idea hope it works out for you but just not for me unless it was a clear backing and we threw some LEDS on the side like some red ones then we have a clear back the glows red that i would pay like 100 for
I'm in for $75
Demonstrate that plastic improves receptivity, make it clear, emboss it with XDA so it's a collector's item (like my 2 OG Droids), and I'm in.
Get Samsung to sell it, and I'll give you $100. ;-)

Motorola Droid Razr Screen Take Apart Repair Guide

This written repair guide will assist you in replacing the touch screen digitizer and LCD screen on your Motorola Droid Razr. It will take you to each step from screws removals, to flex cables, adhesive and etc.
This guide will help you install the following Motorola Droid Razr part (s):
Motorola Droid Razr Touch Screen Digitizer Replacement
Motorola Droid Razr LCD Screen Replacement
And Other Motorola Droid Razr Parts
Tools Required:
Safe Open Pry Tool
T5 Torx Screwdriver
T3 Torx Screwdriver
Adhesive Strips (For Touch Screen Replacements)
Hot Air Gun / Hair Dryer
Motorola Droid Razr Take Apart/Repair Guide:
The first step will be to remove the memory card from the device.
From there you can now use a safe open pry tool to remove the back battery cover.
Removing the battery will be the next step. To do this, remove the small plastic cap on the battery connector. Using a Torx T5 screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the battery flex cable in place. There will also be two (2) Torx T3 screws holding the battery in place on top.

Figure 1
You can now use the pull tab to remove the battery from the device. It is held in place with adhesive, so it may take some force. We do not recommend using a pry tool to remove the battery as it can damage the battery itself.
Using a safe open pry tool, remove the top cover around the camera as shown in green on Figure 1. This will expose a hidden screw.
Remove the eight (8) Torx T3 screws located in Figure 1.
Now, using a safe open pry tool, remove the back housing from the rest of the device.
There will now be three (3) more Torx 3 screws holding the metal frame in place, as shown in Figure 2 that will need to be removed.
Figure 2
Remove the heat shield, as shown in green on Figure 2, using a pry tool, as shown in Figure 2. This will expose three (3) pop connection that will need to be released.
The motherboard can now be removed from the device. Use a safe open pry tool to lift the motherboard away from the screen assembly. Note that there will be a large metal bar on the lower portion of the motherboard, be careful of this when removing the motherboard.
The screen assembly is now accessible. Use a hair dryer or heat gun on medium heat around the outside edges of the front touch screen. This will warm the adhesive and allow you to separate the LCD screen from the touch screen digitizer.
Use quick movements around the outside edges for 45-60 seconds. Use a safe open pry tool to carefully pry the touch screen away from the LCD screen. Reheat if necessary.
You can now replace either screen or other internal part.
Now you will be able to replace any parts on your Motorola Droid Razr. Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.

Hi,
You can find the Razr replacement parts here - Motorola Razr Replacement Parts
You can find the glue (adhesive strips) there also.
While I do appreciate your guide and your efforts there is a much more detailed and well put together guide on ifixit.com

So you always start with a compliment before you kick someone in the nuts?
We have just completed a video repair guide for this model here - Motorola Razr Screen Replacement Repair Video
This provides more detail than our written guide.
I hope this meets your approval
Will do this break any seals or markings companies use to make sure a device hasn't been opened?

The digitizer is out of stock, when will you get it back, need one asap....and thanks for the video it was perfect !!!
Yes, they have been out of stock for a while.
We've only been able to get very small quantities for the last 3 weeks or so. They usually sell out the day they arrive. I'll private message you when I hear about next shipment arriving so you can get in quick

I need both the digitizer and the LCD screen. I've signed up for email notification, but any other advance notice would be greatly appreciated.

Same here, mine is totally shattered, see attachement. I'd appreciate too if you can PM me whenever you receive some new RAZR digitizer (not LCD) in stock. (Btw, would you ship to Spain?).
Thanks in advance Paul.
No problem, I will pm you as soon as we get them in stock.
Still out of stock since April ???
Yes we are still out of stock. These parts are in very high demand and we are going to make sure that we can get our hands on them very soon. Sorry for the delay.

This part is temporarily out of stock. We are hoping to have this item in 1-2 weeks.
You can leave your email in the "out of stock" box located on the product page and an automated email will be sent out when the item is back in stock.

Qcell Extended Battery I717 review

Hey everyone here is my little review on the Qcell "4150 mAh" Extended battery sold on Amazon.
First thing I have to say is that I WILL be updating this post as I go through charge cycles with this battery.
Upon receiving the battery yesterday, I put it to charge right away. I did a stress test on it and let it recharge once more after draining. I must say that the packaging on it is better than most "ebay" batteries that I receive. It came in a little "Qcell" pouch with the battery and cover.
Today, I tested the battery. It ran for ~18hrs 40 min with a 4 hour screen time and 3 email accounts pushing with moderate internet browsing.
I have to say at the moment, it is not worth carrying this pregnant phone around with only the ~5 hrs increase in usage time. However, I hope that after it goes through some charge cycles it will get better. The battery it self is about 1.4 cm thick(I just used a ruler and eyeballed it)
Now moving on to the cover. The back cover is white and semi close to the OEM back cover. It has no markings anywhere and is not as glossy. The back "hump" is is unlike the Mugen Extended Battery covers, it only raises the battery portion while leaving the camera/flash flush with the phone. The cover does feature the NFC however, I do not know how to test it . It also has NO kickstand.
Problems:
My main complaint at the moment is the cover IS VERY LOOSE on the phone . I do not even need to pry it apart using the corner near the volume rocker, I can literally pull it off by jiggling it from one side.
I have sent a complaint to Qcell and they are sending me a new cover so hopefully I just received a defective model.
In conclusion, the battery it self isn't too pricy and I honestly should expect a premium quality with it. The battery does it's job by outlasting the OEM/Ankers that I use but at the moment I would rather stick with my Ankers. The pregnant phone also doesn't look as attractive and slick. I also cannot use my case which makes me very paranoid about dropping it.
Let me know if you guys need any more pictures or have any questions!
Here are some picture comparisons of the battery on my phone, OEM and Extended.
P.S. sorry about the last picture, my OEM battery is still in use so I decided to grab the next closest thing, the Anker one haha.

Thanks for the info and pics. Hopefully through battery gets better.
Wow that cover makes the phone look more than twice as thick. I am surprised.

sexy + ugly = ugly!
I rather carry a normal size spear battery in my pocket.
Update after a week of use.
After about a week of use, I can say that it honestly is not worth carrying this around. If Qcell would produce a better battery cover then I may consider going back but at the cost of my phones beauty and impracticality I'm going to have to put this battery away except for when I have no other batteries to use.
The battery has performed better(as it should) from day one. I can get a full day of heavy use which is nice, but the LOOSE battery cover just keeps me paranoid.
How this has helped you with your choice on 1 of the many extended batteries out there.
I like it
Just wanted to help out and say try it again. I had a heck of a time getting my cover on as well. I like how I can mod my old silicone case for this. And battery will hopefully get better with time.
Tip- try placing phone on flat surface and press hard on edges near battery. Mine snaps tight.
I think it would be a better idea just to get another battery. That over-sized battery just looks hideous on the phone. How were you able to put it in your pocket?

I completely agree, I have 3 ankers at my disposal along with my OEM
But I just figured I give it a shot since no one on the forums has done a review on it yet and it is also my first Extended battery for any phone I have owned.
If you have decided it is something you will not use and you would consider selling it, I am interested. I am in the hospital at the moment, but should be out by Wednesday, I will have my paycheck by then and can make arrangements with you.

Jb0nd38372,
They are only 11 bucks on Amazon with free shipping. I think it's cheaper than buying from me TBH. Because shipping it out to you would cost a few bucks.
Thanks for the offer tho!
Ok just thought I would offer, and I had never checked price, actually just skipped to the review part. Gotta wonder for 11 bucks wonder what they skipped on. The cells may be of the "questionable" quality.

Well for 1, the cover is crap...
and the battery is not amazing compared to my OEMS/Anker.
It sucks our phones are so thin for extended battery. Thanks for the review though, I was trying to picture the extended battery on the note. I think i'm go with 3-4 spare batteries

Haha good choice, go with Ankers or OEMs. Had the best output with them.
Just sent my QCell Batteries back to Amazon. One would not take a charge and the other one would only last 9 hours.
Picked up Anker as a replacement.
