[Q] Warranty/Insurance for Galaxy Note NOT PURCHASED at Best Buy?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Just like the title says.....What should we do?
AT&T offers the insurance for $6.99 / month and has a $199 deductible. Only two claims per 12 month period are allowed but it does cover loss or theft.
SquareTrade wants $69.99 for one year and $124.99 for two years. Their deductible is $99 and does not cover loss or theft. Once you make your claim, the insurance contract is completed (you claim...you must get another policy).
Neither of these options look too appealing to me. What is everyone out there going to do once we get our shiny new devices?

I'm looking at Ensquared. $99 for two years, $75 deductible. Theft / loss / damage. Sponsor of and good reports from Android Forums. Apparently pretty good service and good turnaround times on claims. You get I think three claims, but your deductible goes up to $100 for second and third claim.

You have 1-year warranty from AT&T for free. The insurance is only needed for anything that's not covered by warranty.

Yes..but the 1 year warranty won't cover it if you drop it. Something to consider when the device is nearly twice the size of my previous device.

I have Ensquared for my GNote. Have not had any claims but have a buddy that did and they were fine. Will probably get on my ATT version as well since I am buying no commitment pricing.

Your thread title mentioned warranty. That's what I want to point out. You need warranty if there is manufacturing defacts. You need insurance if something bad happens to it.
I've never dropped any of my phones. And I always prefer living on the edge and never purchase any additional warranty/insurance anything even as expensive as my new cars.

I'm going insurance / no case. I figure this thing is big enough already I don't want a case on it. Plus I ordered the ProClip for it for the car which I don't think fits with most cases.

I baby all my phones and use the where's my Droid app.
If it's stolen I will personally track it down with a gun.

Ok this is going to sound sort of crummy, but let's say that I get a big scratch on the screen; I mean one where even a blind person would constantly notice.
If I have the ATT $7 insurance, I suppose I could, out of 'shock at the scratch',
accidentally drop it on concrete ( preferably from a height). I would then be able to replace it for $200?
My main concern is how easy it would be to make the claim. Insurance companies can be unpleasant (for reasons such as those depicted above)
I'm thinking ATT would be easiest. I don't know.

How do each of these Insurance places handle subsidised phones? For example...I am paying 300 bucks for it through AT&T...if I have a claim...will they pay for a new out of contract phone?

I think most third party ones either send you a new identical phone, a refurbed identical, or some rare instances a better one (like if you submit a claim in 22 months when the Note 2 is out you might get a Note 2).
You send them your broken phone.
I think ensquared will even put a hold on your credit card for the cost of the replacement phone and send you your new phone immediately before they get your old one back.

Best buy has Insurance too
Best buy offered me insurance on my Pre-order for 9.99 a month covers everything but I didn't take it but I was told I could get it at any time just would have to wait 30days befor I could open a claim

I think this time I'm gonna do case & no insurance. Last time I did insurance & no case and never used insurance. so i think ill see how things turn out time.

Almost correct. BB allows you to purchase their coverage for up to 30 days after you purchase the phone. After 30 days; you cannot get the coverage from them.
Of the options i like BB's coverage the best. 9.99/month and zero deductible. They dont hassle you and you have a replacement in 2-3 days. ATT's deductable on smartphones is $200.

Can you purchase insurance from Best Buy even if you purchase from AT&T?

No, to get their protection you have to buy the phone from them.
The one exception to this is the iphone. For some reason BB allows iphone users to buy their protection no matter where the iphone was purchased. (perhaps because the iphone shatters so easily)

Thanks for chiming in Dave. I work for BBYM and Im really in love with our protection. Broke my iphone 4 three times and never paid a dime or waited over 4 days to get a refurb, which by the way are so nice that I sold as LNIB on craigslist. I could have said brand new but even on craigslist I try to be honest as possible (who knows who the crazies are).
Another option for the BBY protection is to purchase outright. For non iphone smartphones it is $169 for the two years, again with no deductible and no limit to the claims. If you, say, get rid of your phone at any point before the two years is up, they can return the protection at a prorated amount. I do this every time because Ill forget to cancel the $9.99 and I get a new phone so frequently, that would start racking up haha

Usually your homeowners or renters insurance will cover theft even if it is in your car check on your coverage. Just throwing it out there.
The Sprint insurance the phone comes with is 8 dollars a month and covers anything. However, if it is accidental damage, you have to pay a 100 dollar fee.
If you bought the phone within 30 days ago, you can still get the insurance.

I found two 3rd party insurances that seem to be better than Sprint's TEP coverage. Worth Ave Group and Safeware each offer theft/loss and the deductible is only $50.

I have ensquared. 100$ for two years coverage. 75$ deductible. Covers lost, stolen, accidental damage. I believe you can file up to three claims over course of the two years. I haven't filed a claim with them but I have to suspect that they will honor their responsibility. They started off as a website to compare prices and coverage of different insurance companies and decided to get in on the action themselves.
Also give you up to 90 days to write a policy with them whereas most companies require you to get b out within 30 days of purchase.
As for homeowners...don't count on it. Most companies, if they do cover it under homeowners, will make you pay the home deductible. So that is almost not worth it. other companies will allow specific riders to be placed on certain items such as phones, but many do not. Allstate for instance does not have riders on phones that I am aware of. many times if you do get a policy to cover the phone, a traditional insurance company just isn't competitive in pricing. An inland marine all perils policy or something will run more than just going to Squaretrade, worth, or ensquared. And I happen to work in the insurance industry. Look at my profile, look at my town...corporate headquarters of both State Farm and Country Financial.
good luck.

And if you need replacement they can give you a loaner phone to have while you wait. Usually its an optimus so its an android phone. It'll get the job done while you wait for your phone Haha.

I am an Allstate agent, and you can get it covered. However, I would not recommend doing it. Your deductible would apply and you would have a claim surcharge. Go with the Sprint TEP.

Another Best Buy Question

Trying to decide if I want to pre order from best buy or straight through ATT. I wish Amazon Wireless would announce something already!
Anywhoo . . . I don't have any real reason NOT to order from BB apart from the fact that I don't like and have sworn never to shop there again. Long, unrelated story, but so far I've made good to myself on that promise.
If I do order from BB, is there any downside? Am on contract with them in any way, or only through AT&T? Can I still take my phone to ATT for warranty claims or do I have to take it to BB?
Thanks!
You will not be in contract with BB in anyway. For warranty I'm not sure. If you order through ATT it ships out on 02/16 while supplies last. If you order through BB it ships out 02/19 with the official flip case (free) while supplies last.

2.Sell back Device
3.Use store credit from the buy back to purchase new phone on another line due an upgrade
4.use left over amounts for other toys, or save towards next upgrade.
I always get the newest device
It's worked out pretty well so far. Currently we are out of upgrades until September..but have a few phones that are eligible for buy back should I decide to trade them in towards one device at full price (unlikely)
our next round of upgrades start in September..right about time for the s3

Lost and stolen for most people isnt an issue, its broken screens. While ours is slightly more expensive if you do the 9.99 a month, there is NO deductible for breaking you phone. The note will be classified as a tier 3 in att's insurance which means its a $200 deductible on top of the $7 a month. That is just ****ing insane lol if you do our outright price for the protection at best buy its $170 for the two years, putting it right under $7 a month. All without a deductible and unlimited claims. And Im not just trying to push our protection because I work there because frankly, you wont be buying from my store so it wont affect me. I just fully support our protection, coming from 3 broken iPhone 4's and most recently a skyrocket.
Side note, I have a concession line with ATT which I cannot get BB protection on and broke the phone. $200 to replace the vivid lol I just cancelled the line and threw the vivid in the trash

Yikes. Idk which best buys you guys are going but theres tons of false info here. Right now, most phones fall into the rapid exchange program. With this, the phone is sent away and a refurbished phone is sent at the same time, making the turn around time about 2-4 business days. This does NOT fulfill your protection plan, meaning it is still active and can still be used again and again with no limit to the amount of claims. If you chose to send your phone as a repair instead of exchange the typical wait time is 14-30 days. If they are unable to repaid your phone in a cost effective manor to them or it exceeds 30 days they will issue you a gift card for the full retail value of the phone so that you can pick out a new one. This WILL fulfill the protection plan. So in a strange, completely misleading way, your initial statement was kind of accurtate. If we give you a $600+ gift card to replace your phone with a different model, yes your $170 protection plan is void. What would you expect?

that is one of the negative sides AND positive sides to the black tie protection plans.
in some cases it just isn't worth the expense (i.e. when the cost of the plan exceeds about the 50% mark, I don't buy it)
it's rare, but in some cases it just isn't logical.
In this case...$300 for the phone plus $170 for the plan...it's a hard choice.
You realistically are looking at $470 vs $600 which isn't much of a difference...unless you utilize the plan towards the end of its life

Sorry but that logic doesn't make much sense to me. Buy a phone at 300, break it and pay 650 that equals 950, which is twice the price of the upgrade and coverage for unlimited replacements. I guess its just that I see a lot of customers coming in after multiple broken screen replacements that I don't see the logic of buying other protection or buying outright replacements. To each his own tho I suppose

Consider BB insurance has no deductible. ATT charges a $200 deductible if you phone needs repair.
No you are right...my point being that breakage occurring in the first 6 months to a year the plan makes sense...beyond that it wouldn't .
Its a gamble...otherwise best buy wouldn't offers it haha. The odds are in their favor. Unless of course one pretty much knows they are going to break the phone, or manipulate the program later to get a new device.
Curious question, only because I receive multiple asnswers in store
Does best buy black tie cover cosmetic damage? I have been told yes and have been told no.
Is there a wear and tear clause? I know att has a wear and tear clause and can deny coverage. Reading their fine print I also notice they can deny if its manufacturering related as well.

In my store, and I assume in most stores, if a customer wants their phone to be sent out AND they have GSBTP, they are fully entitled to send it out. There is almost no way coverage can be denied, although the plan does specify that submersion and extreme damage (i.e, running it over with a car) is not covered. As long as the customer doesn't explicitly say that was the issue, it is usually fine.
I will say, in two years at BBYM, I have never seen a customer who purchased the protection be denied a phone being sent out. While my store is pretty good at making sure the customer is treated fairly, I can assume that BBYM wouldn't be gaining the market share it is if customers were not being treated properly.

Number one reason is the wait to get your phone back can be a week or two weeks sometimes a month the program is good but I can't go that long without my phone
Ask sprint about their options I think if you are just worried about cracked screens and stuff you can get protection through them for.that at like 4 bucks a month. If I am wrong someone interject. Reason I say 4 is I don't think the tep has raised yet and if u lock it in now it won't raise till you resign...
I do not have Black Tie but I heard that its pretty awful. At times they do not honor replacements.
Google it for more info.
I have Black Tie, but I gotta tell you: the whole "free loaner phone if yours has to be special ordered"? Count on rocking a crappy old Android or a BlackBerry for a little bit if your phone can't be initially just fixed....
Here's the rub: yours IS gonna have to be special ordered, if you need a replacement, no matter if your Best Buy has 500 new EVOs in stock: they won't let you have one of theirs. For me, for the times I had to use it, I waited about 2 weeks the first time (because it was "backordered", even though my Best Buy had plenty), and about 3 days the second.
Of course, you also are also DEFINITELY getting a refurb, count on that 100%.
*I still use it, like I said, but the guy at Best Buy won't tell you all these little "details", which, I think, is a bit shady.

I waited a month for a broken charger port on my OG Evo. Seemed like an eternity. Got it back and found that while they fixed the port, they blew out the light on the menu button (looked like it was missing a tooth) . Wasn't going to wait again with a beat up small lender phone.
Gave me a scratched and dented LG Optimus. Big ole scratch on the screen.

Lol at the people that don't like brick and mortar stores its that that is hurting the economy why buy it somewhere and pay a little extra and take a little extra time n pay tax when u can order it online for cheaper ans not pay tax. However I heard awhile back they where or are trying to put laws in place for sales tax on online items.

I actually just dropped sprints insurance and am going to straight up buy the black tie insurance for $170 for the 2 year protection. How sprint is Jacking up the price on everything you would be paying $264 for 2 years not including the $150-$200 deductible. Hell if I can save $100-$250 with BB with a refurbished phone and wait 2 weeks its worth it.

ZAGG has insurance as well. I think its 100$ for 2yrs and covers everything with a 100$ deductible. Might wanna look into that.

best buy also doesnt cover lost or stolen tho if you use mobile defense or sprint locator those arent a huge issue..

yes cause buying online is different then buying in brick and mortar... the store actually makes more of a profit from online sales then store. and i paid taxes when i ordered from sprint tyvm.. the only thing being loss on online sales is taxes to the state but as someone who works in retail i can also tell you all the people using food stamps arent helping much either.. lord forbid they dont get their tax free soda chips and fat cakes

Yeah and is rather pay extra to know that American people have a job even if it is a store and 5 extra dollars that's all im trying to say we have to many people to be cutting jobs and companies can pick up and leave over seas. Btw I agree 3rd sucks I work 12-8 am and it is hard a lot of.the time
But all and all price wise. BB is the cheapest if you don't mind waiting a couple days for a replacement refurbished phone and the fact they don't cover loss or theft. Anyone object?

Nope however I am interested in zagg..
I use http://www.squaretrade.com - $119 for two years protection after tax and 10% discount (coupon code TENFTEN).
You still pay a $99 deductible, and no coverage for theft or loss....but it has great reviews which is comforting. And at about $5/month...much better deal.

I had the black tie protection and I'll tell you why it isn't so hot.
First, doesn't cover lost or stolen phones.
Second, loaner phones require a $150 deposit.
Third, when I used the insurance to fix a broken charging port, I sent the phone in on Jan 2nd. The phone came back unrepaired 3 times. I finally got a replacement phone the second week of February. Believe me, I would have gladly gave a hundred dollars for a replacement from sprint.
Learned my lesson on best buy protection.

The 4$ is still the same for service and repairs. However the replacement part of the TEP has gone up i believe.
And no the TEP will be raised for everyone but only in September if you sign up for TEP before july 17th.

I work for Best Buy and am very familiar with the GSBTP plans (Geek Squad Black Tie Protection). What I am about to say is my own opinion and not that of Best Buy's.
That being said, I am going to give you an unbiased opinion on this because I see both sides to what you guys are saying. I bought my phone outright from BBY 2 days ago. Did I buy GSBTP? No, here is why: I like the lost or stolen option from Asurion/Sprint and I never had to use it until 2 weeks ago when someone stole my EVO 3D from my store. I tried remote locating it and all that crap and it didn't help. Paid the deductible through Asurion (should have been $100 but they told me $50) and got a replacement the next day.
As far as what GSBTP offers, yeah, it's not bad. But there are some things that need clarified in what has been said in this thread. The replacements now are all "Rapid Exchange", as in, you come into BBY and we fill out all the paperwork to get you a new phone. What happens is that the system then generates and order for a refurbished phone to be shipped that day while we send yours back to them at the same time. This means that you will get a new phone within 3 business days, not too bad.
However, the loaner phones are pretty crappy, as mentioned. But stores are suppose to charge you $50 for the loaner phone that gets returned back to you after you return it. They don't all do that, but they are supposed to, so keep that in mind that YMMV.
Everything else in the OP is right. BBY won't deny a claim unless you fully submerged it, nor would they even know that unless you told them. There is a girl at my store that literally drops and shatters her iPhone screen atleast 2 times a month and it's been happening for over a year now, never had an issue. Also, with GSPTB, you are entitled to a 1-time battery replacement on your phone as well which is awesome, but unfortunately doesn't apply to phones without removable batteries.
Hopefully this clarified things for you guys and gave you an idea of both sides to the GSBTP story
@-viperboy-
Thank you for the clarification.

The downside to their insurance is once you make a claim, you will have to purchase another 2 year plan to be covered. But I've ready squaretrade policy is very good and most customer are very happy with how they deal with claims.
Ignore the above statement. It's completely wrong. I just called and you can make multiple claims on the policy.

I'm very curious as to these two options. Which would you prefer? Ensquared is a little cheaper, however, coverage won't start until 30 days after the purchase of the protection plan?

To be honest, I'm still investigating which one as well.
I've got some info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769729
And it's making me think about the Best Buy plan too. But so far, I'm leaning ensquared.
Edit: To clarify, what pulls me to Ensquared more is the lower price, coverage for lost/stolen and I believe they allow 3 claims through a 2 year period.

Well, Ensquare's first claim is $75, but each subsequent claim is $100.
From their website: $75 deductible fee per claim
. All 2nd and 3rd claims carry a $25 additional deductible for admin charges. -Source: http://www.ensquared.com/catalog/phone-insurance/2-year-phone-insurance-smartphone
Also, you can get SquareTrade coverage for $99 on Amazon. So basically, the difference is just the first claim, the $24 difference.
EDIT: Opps, there's some more info about Ensquare's deductible:
A non-refundable thirty-five dollar ($35) deductible maintenance fee will be collected for each authorized claim for the Covered Product under one hundred and fifty dollars ($150). A non-refundable fifty dollar ($50) deductible maintenance fee will be collected for each authorized claim for the Covered Product valued between one hundred and fifty dollars ($150) and three hundred dollars ($300). A non-refundable seventy-five dollar ($75) deductible maintenance fee will be collected for each authorized claim for the Covered Product over three hundred dollars ($300) or any type of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). An additional twenty-five dollars ($25) maintenance fee will be charged to the Member for the second claim and third claim .
-Source: http://www.ensquared.com/2_Year_Phone_Insurance_Terms.htm
I can't find anything from SquareTrade that's something like that as well. As far as I know from what the sales rep told me, all claims have a $99 deductible.
I would have said ripoff had I not used it twice now. First time I didn't even have it until after I needed it. Just so happened my email invite came right after my gnex jumped off my motorcycle. A few scrapes, but they bothered me. Second time I went for a swim trying to launch my boat. Not a bad deal when you consider a $400-800 device price tag.

Asurion is with verizon right? I ordered mine from walmart online. I assume I can still get Asurion and then if something happens, go to a verizon store and leave with a new phone. I assume with squaretrade I will have to use an old phone and it will take at least a week to get a new one? If not more with shipping each way.

Asurion was pretty good, the deductible was pretty bad tho when the phone was like $400 and they wanted $200 lol
for assurian, If you already have the phone, unless you get an invite by email, I think you'll have to go to the store and they have to 'look at it'. Before I got my insurance online, I took it in and they saw it was already damaged and said, no. Also, no, you won't leave the store with a new phone, they will overnight a phone to you and you get a shipping package to send the old one back. Also, may get a refurb if you use your insurance

I think am going to add a rider to my home insurance policy. Only costs about 30 bucks a year and will cover all of our computer devices. There is a 50 dollar deductible and I get a check to replace the device rather than the refurb I would get with asurion. I read this tip here on another thread and checked with my agent about what coverage they offered. Much cheaper than the other cell coverage plans, covers all of our devices, lower deductible, and no refurbished phones as replacement. Unless I am missing something it seems like a no brainer.

Won't a claim against your home insurance policy increase the rate, no matter how small the claim and payout would be?

[Q] Asurion or Squaretrade which did you pick?

So along with the protection such as the glass protector, and a case, I'm debating whether to keep the Asurion on my monthly bill or just make the one time payment for the square trade plan.
Deductibles seem similar.
What did you guys do for your S4's?

Neither and here's why. I bought my galaxy S4 retail for 650$
If I pay the 7 per month for one year and my phone breaks after that point (I'm using a year because that is the typical length of a standard warranty) I have shelled out 84 +100$ for a used version of my phone. This sounds fantastic. However the problem is in a year the S 4 will cost around 350 recertified (possibly cheaper used). If you break it in two years you can get an on contract new phone for 200. If you never break it you shelled out 168$ for absolutely nothing.
The false comparison they make to hook you is the cost of a new phone. You paid 650 for a new phone, or the phone is valued at 650 you will want to protect that. The reality is unless you go outside and break it, the phone will not be worth anywhere near that when you go to replace it.
I had a friend who had asurion since his razr. I asked him why he doesn't just set aside 7 bucks a month for an oh **** phone fund. he started doing that when he bought the iphone 4. he now has enough to but pretty much any phone out.

Thats all fine and dandy until you break or lose multiple phones multiple times. Then the insurance would be cheaper in the long run.
Have you considered Ensquare?
That is what I chose. Their coverage is more complete, IMHO. It protects against "stupidity." :silly:

well you can only replace a phone twice in a 2 year period with asurion. Obviously everyone has different mileage. I know people who break their phones all the time despite having otterboxes screen protectors etc. My last 4 phones haven't had a case and despite heavy use and serious software customization they've all made it through 2 years or more with the exception of my galaxy nexus which died this week (antennas stopped working which is kind of a known problem with early galaxy nexuses). I'd still venture to say that for the average person who takes reasonable care of their phone you still make out better saving your money over using insurance. Mileage may vary.
edit: yeesh apparently some phones are 169 or 200$ deductibles from asurion. insane.

It's only $100 to get it replaced through asurion on VZW. I believe it's more on other carriers, but isn't the case for us. $5 a month plus $100 deductible isn't bad to have the piece of mind IMO.
I went Ensquared
I just got square trade last night...they offer $99 for 2 years of coverage. The deductible is $100 for replacement...new or refurbished...and you have no limit to how many claims you make. Also...they ship overnight...no a few days like someone else posted. Personally $99 for 2 years is cheap...if you pay Verizon's monthly cost it's near $200 over the 2 years. Square trade also has a monthly payment plan of $5 or $6 they do deduct each month...so you have options. They are also open 24/7 and you can even make a claim online.

Hmm, i'll give them a call with some questions and I might go this route!
I've always used Asurion or BestBuy insurance. On my S3 I had Asurion & BestBuy.
I used Asurion for quite a few years. And I had pretty good luck with them. My job involves working around water. And like someone else pointed out Asurion only allows 2 phones per year. Which for most isnt a huge deal. But square trade had a pretty decent deal. So i went with them on my S4. Thankfully I havent had the chance to use them yet. But i dont really think you can go wrong with either.
Asurion replaced my bionic no questions asked, great CS. However, they only deal refurb phones :/ Not sure if that's standard for all insurance company's..

That's all well and good but what if your phone gets broken in a month or 6 months.I would much rather pay $100 than $649 for a new one.I don't really count the $7 a month.I easily waste a lot more than that each month.
