Okay so I have been reading about AT&T prepaid with the Note.
So basically all I need to do is buy this phone

then pop the sim in the Note and set the APN to what the sticky shows and WIN! correct? Once everything works then just call up and have my number ported over from Sprint to the prepaid?

If you want to get unbelievably slow data speeds, then yes that is exactly what you want to do. Sorry but I would never buy a phone at full price only to cripple it with 1-3mb download speeds (if you even get that with a gophone plan) This will also render the gps practically useless.
People confuse me.

People report much faster speeds then that by doing this..What is it I'm missing?

1-3 mbps is quite nice if you can get that on AT&T. But I disagree with GPS useless part. I routinely use my GS2 for GPS navigation. And it has no problem when travel through some areas that are 2G only. In fact, with Google Nav, once the route is caculated, you can turn the data off and your navigation still works because the map data along the route is pre-cached.

Go phone or pre-paid plans are heavily throttled by AT&T. You won't be able to get the full speed.

Interesting about the GPS. I did not know that, but thats a good thing. Sorry I just think 1-3 is a joke for a smart phone. I regularly get 8-12 with my h+ on my skyrocket and have seen 50+ on LTE with the skyrocket. Some may say you don't need it but its certainly nice to have when pulling up web pages and downloading stuff. Streaming is also seamless, where I had problems with my i4 streaming pandora
Well this is what I get all the time with Sprint. So almost anything could beat that and my gps works fine...At home and work im on wifi anyway but those speeds arent hard to beat really.

I dont think that its necesarily heavily throttled its just that the data plan you are using is one that is not capable of good speeds. The data plan for the phone the OP linked is not even 3g

IIRC, there is unlimited data plan for GoPhone.
The throttle part is from posts here by an AT&T employee. And I believe him because for the limited bandwidth AT&T has so far, GoPhone should be on the lowest prority for bandwidth allocation
Yes you could do this. If certain conditions are met. First, the Note must be an unlocked version that can be used anywhere. 2nd, and this is the biggest one, AT&T allows the phone to be used on a pre-paid plan.
The reason for this comment is simple. AT&T knows what phones attached to which SIM Cards. I can bet you the cost of a plan that AT&T will notify you that you can not use a Smart Phone on the GoPhone SIM and Plan. AT&T has no GoPhone's that are Smart Phones. So once they see that you have a Smart Phone, especially one like the Note, attached to a GoPhone SIM, they will throw a fit. They will want their money from that Data Plan.
Not to mention, the GoPhone Plans suck. The amount of money you will spend will equal out to what it will cost you on a contract plan. Especially if you are a heavy texter/data user.

First, the international notes imei is not in ATTs system so they would have no idea what phone is on the plan. Second, all you do is activate the go phone with unlimited nonsmartphone data plan on the gophone with supplied sim, swap some into note and configure correct apn settings so that the note can get on ATTs data network. Third and unrelated, there are gophone smartphones like the thrive and new one which I forget the real name but model is the frog. All the instructions on using gophone plans with international notes are in the other forum

There are go phones that are smart phones, but they require seperate, and really expensive, data plans on top of the go phone minutes. Not that it really counters your main point, but it's more of an FYI.

I don't know if anyone's seen this yet, but for all the US users currently on AT&T, they'll begin to offer a $50 prepaid unlimited plan on June 26th. It'll include unlimited minutes, data, and text (including international text).
I just wanted to get a discussion going to see if this will work with the Galaxy S II. It's marketed for GoPhone's (not sure what that means), and smartphone data will be extra, though a lot of us have already been successfully using the non-smartphone postpaid data plan on AT&T.

Perhaps there's a lack of clarity in the press release, but it seems as if unlimited data is also included (albeit not for smartphones, for which the $5 to $25 charge is applied).
However, it seems that "unlimited web" is included for "quick messaging phones."
Many of us have been successfully using cheaper non-smartphone unlimited data plans for our Galaxy S II's, since the IMEI is not registered in AT&T's system. Essentially, we've been able to access the dumbphone plans.
Just wondering if that might also be the case here with the new prepaid plan.

I would not know, this plan is not out yet I suggest you wait for first user reports.
IF this plan's feature phone unlimited web works the same way their normal 2- year commitment feature phone unlimited wen works, then the only downside I see is you won't be able to switch to "fake 4G" in the small number of cities that show differences in speed between "fake 4g" and "usually 3g but with access to 4g". There is a big thread about this in the QA section, just search for "APN WAP.CINGULAR"

If I remember correctly, the only way to access the "fake 4g" (HSPA+ with full network backhaul) is to be on a smartphone plan and to have them register your phone as one of their "4g" phones? I'm on the unlimited non-smartphone plan already, so there probably wouldn't be a difference?
Anyway, I'll recheck that thread to see if I'm mistaken... or if there have been some new developments.
If anyone checks if this works, please post. I am interested.

According to some, the smartphone plan for "4G" phones would give you uncapped "fake 4G" speed. The feature-phone unlimited 3G does give you "fake 4G" speeds and HSPA+ access but the speed is supposedly capped. I believe it all depends on WHERE you use the phone. Where I am, I was getting same HSPA+ speeds on my old 3G smartphone plan and on the current feature phone plan: max 6 Mbps down, 2 up, on a very good day, on 99% of other days I get about 3 down and 0.5 up. Since I can clearly see that I can't really achieve the max speeds the "speed-capped" plan allows, it made no sense to me to switch to the "fake 4G" service for 4G-labeled phones.

confirming, as I described above, I get the H+ icon on the phone and good speeds, here in New York City. I do suffer from hanging signal problems though (some people attribute it to "fast dormancy" setting, changing which does not help me personally)
I'm on the non-smartphone data plan and getting HSPA+ in my area.
In the several areas I've run speed tests (California Bay Area, Southern California, Denver), I've averaged about 3mbps up and 1mbps down. I've hit up to 5-6mbps down.
Of course, more speed is always a good thing, but these speeds are entirely satisfactory to me.
I'd definitely be interested in seeing if the prepaid plan offers the same data service.
Also, I'm assuming the $50 a month is an out the door flat rate that includes all taxes and fees?

I'm wondering if prepaid might be the way to go then, since the market seems more competitive and unlimited data is one of the key selling points.

If the prepaid plan phones uses sim cards you will be able to use any phone that accepts a sim card.

LOL Why would they do that now? You would probably activate your dumpphone on prepaid account and then just switch sim cards.
Did anyone end up getting the $50 featurephone plan? Did you swap a smartphone onto it? Most importantly, I would like to know what kind of data speeds are you getting on the prepaid featurephone plan?
I read reports that ATT caps prepaid featurephone data to 0.2 Mbps or lower (EDGE speeds). Can anyone post a speed test using this plan?
I am on the 500mb go phone plan and I live in a "4g" city. The best speed I ever got was 1.8mb's and that was at 11pm.
I have tryed:
1) Lot's of APN's
2) 2 new sims. (4G sims)
3) going to two att store's three times in all.
So I like this phone alot, but the "4g" speeds are sub par and then some. I was thinking to do one of the below if I keep it:
1) Sprint hotspot
2) verzion hotspot
3) Buy a verzion iphone 5 and use it as hot spot.( I don't like the iphone, but if it has LTE then maybe.)
The phone it's self is a 9.5/10 in my book and better any thing else so far.( This is just me)
If I sell the phone then I would go for one of the upcoming phone's. (No iphone if not LTE, better CPU then all or 1080P LCD.)

You'd have to get a non-smartphone plan. The speeds are way better, usually around 5mb or even higher but it varies on location.
That's the kind of speed I wanted in the first place. Now how should I go to this plan. do I need to call the 611# or could I do it in a store.

I'm not too knowledgeable on this situation since you started on a gophone plan. But I believe if you want to switch without getting stuck on those 2 year contracts, you'd have to order the AT&T Sim Card. Then just set up your minutes and add the medianet plan, btw you may need a dumbphone imei# so try and find a razor or something.
I can't find this plan on their site. I may just go to verzion and get the Nexus Prime, becuase I get 20% off the plan and $50 off the phone, BUT I realy wanted unlimited data.( From job)

I have no idea, plan is based on how you choose it to be. So far it's 5$ for the simcard, then the rest is dependent on your minutes and extra services.

The reason I ask, is I had/have an HTC HD2 that gets way better data transfer rates on 3g, than this phone does on HSPA+ in the same area. I have been able to hit 3-4Mbits down on this phone, and was getting 5-to almost 8 MBits on the HD2. (There have been a dozen plus radios on the HD2) The data speed on this Note is disappointing.

I easily get 10MB down on my this phone on HSPA+, which is the same as my last phone. I'd say there is something wrong with your phone.

I've tested running completely stock, stock + rooted, and on The Collective Unofficial ROM.

I'm running into the same issues. I am thinking that since I am a long time AT&T unlimited user, I only have two options available:
Note: I already unlocked, then rooted the stock with Odin, did a back-up with
Titanium, did a nandroid back from the phone, and loaded the clockwork recovery into my phone so that I can load ROMS easier.
Options:
1. Subscribe to AT&Ts NEW service options and I will be subscribed to their
new HSPA+/LTE club (give up unlimited) without any problems.
OR
2. Don't subscribe to any of their new plans, and stay stuck with the Edge and
3G, and Unlimited data services, all while the phone falsely shows 4G at the top of the screen.
My fastest down speed has been around 6.5 MB - depending on where I am while 4G was being displayed on the phone.
It seems to me that the HSPA+/LTE requires a special subscription.
Network Mode does not appear on my phone, so I can't ensure that it
it has a 4G service selected. I was looking for a fix that would turn my Network Mode back on.
I can see a defaulted APN titled AT&T PTA, but it is locked from edits.
If I set my phone to that defaulted AT&T PTA everything works but data. SpeedTest immediately displays, "Try Again".
In my Elixir application, if I choose "Turn WiMax(4G) ON,
I get the following in Elixir:

So, I think that either we need to figure out how to turn Network Mode back on,
for the AT&T Notes, or give up unlimited and go with their new plan.
Some kind of way it seems like a subscription may be tied into allowing HSPA/LTE speeds.
You don't have to give up your grandfathered unlimited plan for HSPA or LTE. They just upgrade you to the 4G version of the unlimited plan.
You may have to do it in an actual AT&T store (not a dealer) or over the phone with customer care.
Also these phones don't have wimax...

I've been on the phone with a couple of reps., been into an AT&T shop a few times, and they all keep telling me that I have to upgrade to their new plan which does not have unlimited. The best they could offer me was a 5 GB plan. Also, they said I have never been on a smartphone plan with them. Although, I was previously using an HTC HD2 (sounds like a smartphone too me), but it was not a smartphone registered in their system. Records show that I'm a razor user.
They have no record of the unlocked phones that have been using like the HTC HD2. So now, when I take that SIM out of the HTC HD2 and slide it into the Note, I'm not getting 4G.
And finally, they said that if I was previously on one of their Smartphone plans I would be able to transfer to the LTE service.
When I zoom out and look at the big picture, I don't think most people have a need for the extra speed anyway.
Any thoughts... I think I am stuck with the Edge.

Don't bother upgrading. I had unlimited, and am now on their 5gb a month plan with tethering. and I am not getting any faster speeds. I seriously doubt it's the plan, and I am getting billed for 4g.

Although, I was previously using an HTC HD2 (sounds like a smartphone too me), but it was not a smartphone registered in their system. Records show that I'm a razor user.
They have no record of the unlocked phones that have been using like the HTC HD2. So now, when I take that SIM out of the HTC HD2 and slide it into the Note, I'm not getting 4G.
And finally, they said that if I was previously on one of their Smartphone plans I would be able to transfer to the LTE service.
When I zoom out and look at the big picture, I don't think most people have a need for the extra speed anyway.
Any thoughts... I think I am stuck with the Edge.

I think maybe I misread your earlier post. Do you mean that you have an AT&T Unlimited plan (calling minutes, etc) or AT&T unlimited data plan?
If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, they should upgrade you to the unlimited 4G data plan with the new SIM card.
If you have the Unlimited calling plan, then you might have to suck it up and get one of the capped data plans if you really want LTE.
Either way, to get the faster data speeds you would need a new SIM card. The older SIMs (even from last year in some cases) can't handle the faster LTE speeds and can cripple the data speeds on the phone to the point you are describing.
I have the unlimited data and calling plan. Reps. just told me straight out that I will lose the unlimited data. But after reading Cobra's post, I have no clue as to what the real trigger is for making HSPA+/LTE work on my phone.
Well, I'm getting ready to strip everything to see how ICS looks, and then go from there..
I guess Cobra there is still no answer. You switched and it is still slow, I did not switch and it is still slow. Does the LTE service really exist
p.s. I can't wait until I don't have to challenge the image verification. I cannot understand those &^&%^ letters

The reps are BSing you. I have a grandfathered unlimited plan & switched to a LTE unlimited plan by asking the rep to do it for me when I activated my I717. I came from a N7000 to an I717. Are you in a LTE area? I went from 3-6MB DL to 20-35ish MB DL, depending where I'm at.

Good grief.. I'll try again at a new location. I'll simply tell them that I want to change my current unlimited plan to the LTE unlimited plan. I am in the Wash, D.C. metro area. They act like an LTE unlimited plan doesn't exist.
Cobra are you in an LTE area? I wonder why your speeds aren't up there if you are in fact on the LTE plan.

Oh, they looked at the SIM too and said it was a current SIM.
If you can send me the description of the svc as on the invoice I would appreciate..

You guys got me feeling slighted over here Ok, I'm defintely going to follow-up again. I was wondering if your Nexus smartphone was a recognized AT&T phone. The pivotal point for grandfathering unlimited to LTE may be that they will do it only for THEIR phones that were previously recognized as smartphones. When they look up my records it comes back showing that I'm officially using one of their previous motorola razor phones, which at the time was not on a their smartphone plan, even though I was able to use the SIM in an unlocked non-AT&T HTC-HD2 without any problems.
So, maybe if you come from a recognized AT&T smartphone they will upgrade you, but if your last phone registered with them was not considered a smartphone while on an unlimited data plan, then they will not grandfather you in..
I gues it's worth another try.

No. It has to be an "unlimited smartphone data plan". If you have that no matter what phone you are using, you can keep it. Usually you can tell by how much you are paying for the data plan. There was a "unlimited" plan for other non smartphones for like $20 for phones like the Razor etc but the smartphone plan for what were known previously as PDAs was like $39.
So which one do you have? I am pretty sure if you only have the unlimited non-smartphone plan you cannot convert that to a smartphone unlimited plan...

Yes, and I think there is a list of cities somewhere. Seattle area, as high tech as it is, does NOT have it yet, while smaller cities, and lower tech areas do? Doesn't make sense to me. So for now I am stuck with HSPA+
On my HD2, I had regular 3g speeds, then I did a radio change, and used the Rafpigna Froyo ROM, and suddenly I started getting speeds like my sig pic shows. My data is slower with this ROM, but from what I have been reading around the net, my speeds are pretty typical for a lot of the Notes on HSPA+
Forgot to mention that I installed the leaked ICS ROM, and it is very much worth doing. Data speed went up a little as well. Still not as much as my HD2 was though.

The speed of the network will always vary greatly. They are completely based on your proximity to the tower and the current load from other users on the tower. Unless you can find a tower with no other users on it and you can repeat the test from the exact same spot, there is no way to compare speeds between phones, or even the same phone at different locations.
If you find some threads where people are reporting their speeds, you will see that they vary by massive amounts.
I can say that I am still onthe unlimited data plan and on stock ROM I was getting 10Mbps. It must be your area because my last phone was hitting max capability on HSPA @ 7.2 Mbps.

Edit, just to clarify I went from a 3G only phone and finally got a 4G phone and I really don't thing they are trying to throttle your speeds just because you are on 4G with an unlimited data plan.
I was an AT&T rep from a long time ago (before cingular) and one thing that has held true is that all reps are told by corporate to push people into new plans no matter what. I was told as a rep by another rep that even something as swapping phones required new 2 year contracts which was and still is bull.
AT&T arbitrarily swapped my plan when I went from my G1 to a streak because they said I never was on a smartphone plan. I explained to them that I was on a blackjack and went to a G1 (paying $30 a month) and then I went to the streak. They told me tough luck and they were keeping me on the tiered data plan. I calmly asked for their manager, when I was transferred I exploded on the manager telling them that I call every time when I swap phones to make sure everything is good (not needing to upgrade my plan or anything) and that it was their screwup and if they're treating me like this I was going to leave. I promptly got an apology and asked for my current IEMI number and we were done. I threw in words and phrases like improper business practices, bait and switch and other such things. Managers have more "Say" on what they can do, you tend to get things taken care of because they just don't want to deal with you.
that's been my experience with AT&T, they're far from perfect, but if you start yelling and being upset, you're more likely to get what you want. Sad but true.
LTE
Nope, no LTE in Seattle yet. Only HSPA+ Seattle is very high tech, and yet, no LTE here. One of AT&T's major data centers is here as well. Hard to tell why they are slow rolling it out here.
I don't get to see the invoices. My wife works for AT&T, and gets those. She did tell me I am being billed for 4g though.

I've been hanging in the International Note forums as I have a GT-N7000... I love it!! And running ParanoidAndroid it's awesome!!
Anyways, I will be moving to the US (San Francisco) next month and I have a few questions for my fellow Note'rs:
-Will I be able to use my International Note in the US with at least 3G speeds and/or HSDPA speeds?
- Is there a carrier that will let me use my phone and give me cheaper prices?
- For new voice+data plans, can I get unlimited for cheap somewhere with good coverage?
Any other topics or gotcha's you can think of will be appreciated!

You can use Straight Talk unlimited voice text data $45 US. Its monthly, and you buy refill cards.
Your phone supports the AT&T frequencies. You will get at least 3g. But you can go to their site to see a map to verify that.
You will have to purchase the sim card ahead of time, as not many stores sell the sim.

yup, straight talk sim, as stated above. and you could always throw me that international version and take my U.S version and get 1/2/3/4G LOL.
BTW, there is no such thing as an Unlimited GSM/HSPA data plan in the USA. Voice, yes, SMS/MMS, yes, mobile data, no.
Straight Talk say their data is unlimited but they cut you off after 2GB/mo. Although I have read that ST will turn it back on it you call them up and profess to not using the data for file downloading, running a server or business using it.

To give you an idea, I am on Vodafone Spain at the moment (living in Spain heheh and my plan is €120 per month (=approx. $150 per month), I get 1000 minutes in the day, 1000 minutes nights and weekends, and 1 GB of data.
So Straight Talk will be a good bargain!!!

Here with Vodafone when I go above 1GB of data they I go into "Best Effort" mode when I cannot be guaranteed the speed of the connection, it can be HSDPA, it can be 3G... or it can be GPRS...
But I'll have a connection...
But again it costs an arm and a leg!!
So Straight Talk seems like the best deal...
If you don't mind...trade your International Note for an unlocked AT&T and get Tmobile monthly 4G for $30 and get 5GB's of 4G data. After 5GB they throttle you. Still way better and cheaper than Straight Talk's plan. But you will be on Tmobile's Network...but i heard Tmobile speeds are pretty fast in the bay area. If you use your current International note on Tmo's network you'd only get 2G coverage...not the biz. Good luck on relocating!
I was going to purchase a Galaxy S3 from ATT and use it on the go phone plan. The rep at the store told me if I purchased the phone and it didn't work with my go phone sim I would be unable to return the phone. I asked if all I had to do was enter in the correct APN it would work. He said he'd seen other people try and not be able to get it to work. Is this guy full of crap? I understand I wouldn't be getting LTE but figured I would be able to get 3g. I was going to enter in the APN settings that I used on my unlocked tmobile galaxy s2 on the go phone plan.

I'm currently on Tmo's monthly 4G $30 plan and absolutely love it. I cant imagin myself being tied down to another 2yr contract ever again. I avg around 12-18mbps down with Tmobile btw.

Thanks for the information. T mobile has poor coverage where I am located. I currently have a go phone plan but have thought about using straight talk since it uses att towers and has unlimited data if you don't abuse it.
I see. StraightTalk's data speeds are actually pretty fast. But i've heard that even though it says its unlimited, they do cap you at only 2GBs.

I heard they don't so much cap you as they actually kick you off. I use less than 1 GB a month so it won't be so much of a problem.
