[Q] Boot loop when plugged in any ideas? - HTC EVO 3D

Hello, my first post so hello to all.
Mt phone recently started going into a boot loop when I turn it on when it is plugged into a charger. I am running the newest OTA stock. Any suggestions?
I can boot it when it is not plugged in but it will randonly reboot during then day as well, if it happens to be charging when it does randomly reboot it will boot loop uintil I unplug it.
I tried replacing the battery to no avail. I was running a rooted rom but switched to unrooted stock to discount that possiblity as well.
Thanks

Issue still occurs on unrooted stock ROM?
When you say boot loop, you're referring to the boot animation looping over and over, or the device back to the splash screen, then thru the boot animation and back to the splash screen?
The main logs you'll want to watch are going to be logcat (adb logcat) for the Android system and /proc/kmsg for the kernel.
Hope that helps point in the right direction!

What is the easiest way to check those logs... I'm pretty software savvy but never really messed with Android internals

Are you CDMA or GSM? When you went stock did you wipe?

I did as clean of a wipe as I know. I am soff so I installed stock recovery and used the stock ruu.
I am cdma

What software on you on? 2.08 or 2.17?
I haven't had any reboots ever flashing rom wise I have newer hboot 1.5 with S-On
I am wondering if the issue is due to a rom or root method or hardware problem?
When did it start? Is your phone new or a used one?

I AK on hboot 1.4 with soff. I bought the phone launch day New. I have insurance so i could have them swap it out. I am running 2.17.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App

You might need to update your hboot to 1.5 and use htcdev unlock, don't worry you won't lose s-off. I had to do it too I am currently on 1.5 with s-off. Once you update flash a new ROM and you should be set.

Solved
Well I figured out what was going on, the phone would get hot when I would plug it in and it needed to charge which was causing it to reboot. Today it actually totally died and wont power on. So I am definately blaming hardware at this point. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Rom manager

Hi everyone, I recently installed rom manager I am rooted and s-off'ed on honeycomb. Just wanted to know how I can get rom manager to recognize my flyer when it asks me to install clockworkmod recovery. I tried to follow the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16671722#poststop
but I couldn't find the .setting file. Maybe it needs to broken down into instructions for a noob =p Thanks so much!

ROM manager is not intended to work with the Flyer or View and some functions in this app will cause harm and potentially brick your device if you use it
Darn. Stupidly I already flashed a rom. Stuck at the white screen and it just says HTC. Soft bricked? Anyway to get it working again?
how could you of flashed a rom using rom manager? What Rom? where you on gingerbread or hc? can you get into hboot? were you s-off or s-on? Why, why, why, why, why?
Its really a huge mess. haha. Flashed the miui rom. I'm s-off. I was on honey comb. And to answer your question as to why: I am bored, curious and stupid.
I am not certain but I think you will need to get back into Hboot
may need to fastboot flash an appropriate recovery for your device (FLYER). Although you can try to sellect recovery and see if you can still get into revolutionary. Once you have the correct revolutionary recovery I think you can flash a FLYER hc rom. Or you should be able to re run globatrons hc s-off update and it should replace all the broken parts and replace it with a working system.
at least to me these are the options that make sense
Okay, I can get into revolutionary, but I'm not sure where to go from there. I tried running golbatron's hc ruu but my flyer has low battery and I don't think it is charging while in the bootloader. It needs 30% battery to run the ruu. Is there a way around this? I also tried installing the honeycomb rom from revolutionary but it kept saying installation aborted.
it should hopefully charge while either in recovery or while powered off. I would probably go with gettting into fastboot and powering off. You may need to charge it for several hours. once powered off you hopefully will just have a solid amber back light under the power button and not a flashing amber light

Did you wipe all the way? Also what is your software 2.17 or 2.08 ? Did you fastboot boot recovery.img when you flashed?

You need to flash boot.img/kernel using fastboot or Flash image GUI or else you will face issues if the ROM uses kernel other than your current one.
This is the limitation of HTC unlock method (S-ON)

Thank you!
I flashed the boot.img using fastboot as you suggested. Now the phone is stuck in an endless loop between powering off and the HTC startup logo.
It appears that I am getting closer to fixing the problem but I am still stuck. Can you help further please?
Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply.
I did wipe all the way. How do I tell whether I have 2.08 or 2.17. if the phone not able to start up?
I flashed boot.img using fastboot. I just realized that the bootloader when doing and Hboot tries to load the image indicates no image or wrong image.
I am either missing a step or did something wrong.
Please help!
did you make a backup of Infected before you flashed?
When you say you installed Warm did you install and actually get it fully booted and set up your home screens and all that and it only stuck on the first reboot after? or was it right after you flashed warm?
Really if you made a backup of infected or what you were running before you should be able to restore that via recovery then boot up normal. Then use FlashImageGUI to flash the kernel needed for Warm, then reboot into recovery mode and flash the other portion of the Rom from the custom recovery.
Unfortunately, I did not back up Infected or other previous roms. I didn't know that I should, I only backed up my apps using Titanium. I now know better.
Still stuck in loop mode. I have been searching the forums for some possible solutions but so far nothing has worked.
I am up the creek without a paddle...
kongfooey said:
I used Titanium Backup to back up apps etc. is that the same as backing up the rom (Infected)?
If I had the backup how do I recover using recovery? I have been reading other posts in the forum and have tried some of the suggestions. I wiped the data and cache.

na TiBackup isn't the same as backing up the Rom itself.
Full backups are done from within the custom recovery...
the boot.img you pushed via fastboot earlier. where did you get it from?
Silly me... I realized that Titanium backup was not the correct backup after I posted.
I took the image from the Warm zip file. I initially thought the problem was fixed until I realized that the phone is in an endless loop...
Still looping

well to be honest I would just go back and start form scratch at this point since pushing the kernel via fastboot somehow didn't take for you nor did clearing cache's after the fact.
after pushing the kernel via fastboot, have you tried doing that again, and then going into recovery and flashing the rom again? If that doesn't work you might as well just go back to stock and push stock kernel flash stock rooted OTA, boot up, and use FlashImageGUI to push the Warm kernel then go back to flashing the Warm rom in recovery...
really before pushing the stock kernel if you wanna test to see if your initial push of Warm kernel even took fully just fully wipe data and try flashing infected again in recovery. If it boots fine then you know your fastboot push didn't take before to begin with...
Edit:
before i even really get more into this. does Warm even use another kernel beside the stock one? If they dont then all of this could of resulted from a bad download of the rom itself being flashed...
Sgt. Slaughter, I salute you...
I played around with your suggestions. Got it working... I flashed a different boot.img and it solved the problem. I may have gotten a bad Warm rom...
Thanks again!!!
Note: if you took/installed the latest update (2.17.651.5) you won't be able to use roms based off earlier firmware/kernels (ie 2.08.651.2 or 651.3) b/c of kernel differences (I think I've read that somewhere).
I believe Warmtwopointthree and Infected are not using the latest base/kernel.
Edit: saw you posted right before me. So what kernel/boot.img did you use?

Nice good to hear. Fact you had your phone even semi-booting makes solving anything wrong with it usually trial and error and ends up not being so bad to fix...
I used boot.img from OTXE Titan HD ODEXed New Beats!
I need to educate myself a bit more about the differences between kernel and .imgs etc...
Thanks for your response. I greatly appreciate!!
I'm having a very similar issue, I rooted my Evo using Revolutionary and installed CW Recovery and everything was fine so I tried installing ZR3D and part way through the install, my phone turned off and now it wont get past the HTC boot screen. I went into CW Recovery but nothing is working, no matter what option I choose [even Turn off phone or reboot] it gives me the CW logo but nothing happens.
I have HBOOT 1.49.1107 with S-Off
Try reflashing your recovery threw hboot.

Can you boot into Fast boot? If so, try connecting your phone to a computer and flashing a recovery through there. Then try to install the ROM.

Bootlooping after going into recovery early

Edited: the phone I had was running with a non-OEM battery I switched the battery over to the extended OEM and the phone has not boot-looped since then.
I was trying to get rooted again on my rezound that is already s-off. I entered the stock recovery on accident and got the red triangle and after that my phone will boot normally and show the homescreen but it randomly restarts within 5- 10 minutes. This is before I accomplished root. I reset the phone after this and it seemed to stop the bootlooping.
Today I powered on the phone and its bootlooping all over again. This time it boots up normally but reboots anywhere from immediately to up to about 20 mins later. I didn't have any personal info or apps installed because I don't plan on using it until I install a custom rom. I went on to flash Amon-ra 3.15 with adb and installed the SuperSU.zip in AmonRA recovery. So I'm rooted right now. I had no bootlooping while in hboot or recovery. I want to backup my current setup so that I can return to a clean rooted stock if needed.
I've read that many people do a wipe with AmonRA and still have the bootlooping issue. I've been reading a ton of threads and I can't figure it out. Can anyone offer insight on what I did wrong/what happened and how I can fix it?
I'm currently S-off, rooted
Have AmonRa Recovery
SuperSU v0.96
Running software: 3.14.605.12 710RD
Kernel version: 3.0.16-gd0049f1
Baseband: 1.22.10.0421r, 1.22.10.0424r
I would just check through the basics. Did you wipe system, cache, dalvik, etc when you went from one rom to the other. I know when I don't delete the ph98img after I flash a rom and that file in bootloader I would get boot looping. Some one should chime in if this didn't help atleast it was bumped

I'd suggest running an ruu and do a full wipe while in that setup.. then try flashing to where you wanna be..

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm stock rooted right now, so i've haven't flashed a rom yet. Famouscollin, your saying that I should pretty much return to the stock ruu and re-root to see if that takes care of the problem?
Since I've changed the battery out, I've had no bootlooping.
Can you recommend a full image backup that I can use?

[Q] Rezound Boot Loop Can't Flash to Stock

Hello all, I am new to these forums so I apologize in advance for possibly sounding a bit uninformed.
I got a Rezound from a friend that was never unlocked or rooted that was stuck in a boot loop. I tried everything to bring it back to life with no luck. I flashed the stock RUU, I unlocked via HTC Dev and flashed Amon ra 3.15 recovery. No matter what I did, It would just boot up to the HTC white screen and shut down and repeat over and over.
I decided to put a custom ROM on it to see if that would work. I flashed Scott's Clean ROM from recovery along with his PH98IMG.zip file as instructed to do and the phone came to life. I am currently running the Clean Rom which is ICS 4.0.3 which happens to be the same android version as stock.
What I am wondering is, If I can somehow get this phone back to stock? The RUU didn't work the first 20 times I tried it and it probably won't work now. Is it possible to flash the stock ROM through recovery? Is RUU the only way to go? Do I need to use stock recovery to load stock ROM? If anyone knows how I can get this phone to stock, I would appreciate it. It is strange how it works on custom ROM but not on stock.

[Q] back to stock

for some reason i'm having a big problem going back to stock.
here's my current set up...
tampered
unlocked
s-on
hboot 1.12.0000
TWRP recovery
Stock with Goodies 3.40
all i'm trying to do is get back to stock!
here's what i've done so far...
1. connected phone to PC with USB Debugging on and ran RUU of the latest release
2. phone reboots and goes to the black HTC screen and just gets stuck there forever
then I realize I have to relock it so I relock and then reboot but then it just gets stuck in bootloader and won't go into OS or recovery...just reboots to bootloader when I try to do anything. plus when I try to do adb or run RUU from PC, the PC doesn't think the phone is actually connected to it.
so i've re-unlocked and now it goes back to OS but my whole point is to go to stock and unroot...what the hell am I doing wrong? I'm about to just throw the phone into the ground and get a new one since I have squaretrade warranty.
I know many of you are probably just thinking...why doesn't he s-off? because i don't have access to 32 bit windows 7 PC and figured just unrooting and then updating to latest RUU and then rerooting/unlocking would be sufficient.
THANKS in advance for any advice...
maybe

all his videos are great.
that's what I started with...relocked and then ran RUU but it just gets stuck at the black HTC logo screen forever...like we're talking over an hour. the thing says it may take 10 minutes or so...i'm not getting anything status update...it just gets stuck there...

mine was 2.09 thats what i ran worked fine
Maybe Try Again
It took me a few tries or so, to get the RUU to work, but it finally worked.
One thing I realized is that I had to flash stock recovery prior to relocking, otherwise you're wasting your time, afaik.
...which leads me to how I came across this thread. I can't remember where I found stock recovery. I've been searching xda almost an hour. Can anyone tell me?
