As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

I had a Skyrocket before this and the difference is stunning. My wife has an ip4s and says she can't stop staring at it over my shoulder because it looks so good.

Yes watching netflix in the dark with dark scenes looks terrible. So is there a fix for this?
Just tried looking at my iPhone 4 and it looks like all the color has been sucked out....this really is a great screen!

On International Notes it's been reported that ICS fixes this, if you could flash an ICS build then you're good to go, but until then wait for Supercurio's fix.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. I can see like lines flashing, doesnt look good at all and thats a turn off because I wanted to watch alot of videos on this. You guys can try it out and see if you see what I see. Go to veetle.com, scrolling down to any movies channel and select it, and make it full screen.....

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.

If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.

Colors in LCD are always going to look "washed" compared with the oversaturation of Amoled. That said as dibdin mentioned this screen seems to have an slight yellowish tint, it's mostly notable in white and other few colors.

YEAH i think so, I was using S2 before i had my xps, at first i was really thinking like that, but later on i was thinking XPS has natural colors as compare to the saturated amoled of S2. I had time to compare whites of S2 and XPS, whites are better on Sony XPS.
I agree the whites are better (blue ish on the s2 and grey ish on the gn)
I have no yellow tints so I am happy about that.
Seems I will just have to adapt to the paleness of the colours.
Otherwise this is a fantastic phone!

For one, Super Amoled Plus (SAP) will have true blacks since the pixels are completely turned off when displaying black, unlike LCDs which only display a (very) dark grey due to the backlight being constantly on.
SAP screens also have a wider viewing angle compared to the sLCD.

It's much more impressive to have true blacks on a screen than "bright" whites lmao even my 5 year old Samsung D600 had bright whites and apart from injuring my eyes it does nothing to improve the user experience
Also it's much more harder to produce screens with True blaks than shiny whites.

I sold my gs2 and unless Samsung totally upgraded the tech, I'm happy on LCD. I'm not playing games or movies on it. I have a 60 in 3d plasma for that.

Not completely shut off. Try to show a black image in a dark room and you see some light from the screen

He didn't say bright white, he said right white. I guess me means a realistic white color that has correct temperature and not tinted. It can make a big difference for reading text when the background is white as well.
I personally think IPS display can produce some very accurate colors, usually more accurate than AMOLED. I still love AMOLED for its excellent black level, viewing angle and ability to view under direct sunlight, which is the main important thing. I am very impressed with the One X screen though.

I'm thinking about buying the Galaxy S III, but the Pentile screen is really holding me back. I mean, why buy a device with a screen that looks bad and has to be looked at for several hours a week?
I've heard that at high resolution, Pentile screens don't matter. But I want some opinions from all you people out there.
And what would you expect to see looking at a poor quality entitle screen?
My s3 is probably the clearest looking screen I've looked upon

Older AMOLED Pentile Display were bad because they have a low ppi (240ppi on the SGS1)
But SGS3 screen has a 306ppi and the "pentile effect" seems to be not there (at least I do not see it on my SGS3

No matter what? Even if you're holding it like a inch away from your phone? I usually use my iPod touch (I have a Blackberry phone, it sucks for web browsing) when in the mornings when I don't feel like getting out of my bed. I usually hold it just 6 inches away from my eyes.
My S3 has to be the clearest screen I have ever seen. Had it for a few days now and still doesn't fail to amaze me whenever I turn the screen on.
You don't have to worry about holding it 6 inches or even 2 inches away from your face.
Its really beautiful...much better then my Nexus...
The best way to solve your problem is to go the nearest store and have a look at the demo unit. Don't believe what you hear or read, believe what you see.

I live in a semi-rural area. The closest store to me is a over a hour's drive away. My schedule for the next couple weeks is packed, I will not have enough time to go over to the closest store and look at the phones.

I saw the Motorola Droid Razr before I knew what pentile was and I thought it looked weird and pixellated so it's certainely not placebo. At the ppi of the GS3 it doesn't matter imo. I do still notice it (but not like I can count the pixels.. but it just is a little bit different then normal rgb screens) but the screen is still somehow the best I've seen in a phone.
You shouldn't keep yourself from buying it because of this as it not even really noticable, it's the best screen there is imo and it even spares some battery.
I can notice the pentile effect if I stare hard at the screen from less than 10cm away. I've compared my S3 to the HOX and the HOX does indeed has a finer screen. But still the S3 has one amazing screen. The blacks are much better although the colours seems a little over saturated and slightly on the warm side.

Well then I guess you have two options 1.) Wait two weeks and then go look at the phone 2.) Go with a different phone.
The only time I notice the pentile screen is whilst reading some text. It is barely recognisable but if and when you notice it you'll subconsciously start to look out for it. But it is very minor indeed, and changing the font of text helps to more or less eradicate it.
Aside from that minor quibble re text I have to say that this screen is absolutely awesome. Colours and contrast are absolutely amazing. I tend to set the screen mode to Natural as I think this gives the best colour effect.
I know this screen is awesome because when I switch from it to my iPad 3's retina screen I don't feel any degradation, if anything pictures and videos look better on it than on the iPad 3 - and that's saying something!

I didn't own the G Nexus, but there is no purple tint at low brightness. My S2 had a slight yet noticeable yellowing at low brightness - this does not

"Super Amoled Plus" will never work with High Resolution. They are not designed for that.

I my opinion It is noticeable, but only at ~3" away and I do have 20/20 vision but in any other situation It's fine, I have even fooled a few friends who own an s2 that it was a 'plus' display but as above you are best going to have a look
Its noticeable, coming from an Xperia S (which I gave to my wife for this phone) and having a G Note which died before the Xperia S, its the same for me as the G Note.
It's mainly around fonts and small icons which is more noticeable, definitely not in pictures unless you have super vision, but most of the time you're looking at fonts or small icons, so yes its there.
But FWIW I wouldn't trade it for the contrast, I've never owned a phone with such contrast (actually the Note was the same), but having said that in sunlight forget using this phone, side by side in sunlight with the Xperia S, the Sony wins hands down.

I was just at a Verizon and AT&T Store. My main concern is brightness, though, secondarily, the jaggedness of PenTile.
I looked at the S II Sky Rocket and Note. And the Nexus at Verizon. All these AMOLED displays were incredibly dim, at least to my eye. Of course they had ghosting/burn in, too but I presume (I hope!) that's just because the display models are left on. But compared to even my Droid 2 the AMOLED displays were literally HALF the brightness (approximately, to my eye), of my Droid 2. The One X and Rezound of course blow it out of the water. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the "brilliant" color of OLED too. No point if it's as dim as an LCD on lowest brightness. Plus there were was the terrible tint on them all. Even straight on, but especially from even a tiny angle. And I saw the Pentile blurriness with the "color" around edges. And my vision is bad. Although I guess it wasn't that bad from at least two feet away, like normal distance for most tasks, but it was bad close which I sometimes do when using my phone.
Is the Galaxy S III screen as dim as the S II or Note or Nexus?
I am just wondering if this is a universal thing, where OLED is just dim, due to inherent qualities of OLED? I searched a bit and apparently the "nits" are much lower according to this xda thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1679964.html. Oddly enough I found reviews and users saying they found it too bright which surprised me. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised and have S III be brighter than previous SAMOLED handsets!

I own a GS2(I777), a GNexus, and and now a GS3. I'm running AOKP on the GS2 and GNexus. I can't comment on the Note as I've never used one. I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Were you looking at them through a welder's mask?
Compared to a Droid 2? I was showing my S3 to my buddy who has a RAZR MAXX today. My screen is better and it ain't even close. He agreed completely.
And BTW, if you are asking a question, don't you think the Q & A section would be a better place to ask it?
I had an SGS2 and the brightness was more than bright enough for being in direct sunlight. Sure, it could have been a LITTLE brighter but I never had problems reading anything on the screen. It was also very crisp due to the true RGB stripe.
The Note has a PenTile pixel arrangement but due to the high resolution it's a non-issue. The same is true with the SGS3. Of course OLED displays aren't going to match LCD in sharpness or brightness, but the true blacks and vibrant colors look beautiful to me.
Wait for it to be in the store and then go take a look. But please don't say the displays on the SGS2 or the Note suck, because they really don't. Compare them side-by-side with a One X and you'll see a difference, but you will never be using it side-by-side in real world use. If you like super bright screens with white so white it'll burn your retinas, go for an LCD screen. If you like true blacks and punchy colors (that you can adjust the punchiness of) then go with an AMOLED. But saying AMOLED screens suck is just stupid.

I have the S1,S2 and S2 HD LTE and the screens are bright as a greasy bald head under direct sunlight. I have my brightness settings to about 15%-20%. My friends with iPhone 4s' even say its too bright. I put my S2 HD LTE next to my friends GS3 and my screen is actually better. I'll post some pics up later.

The Note having a high resolution did not make it a non-issue.
I went from:
iPhone 4S - Galaxy Note - HTC One X
Screen Clarity went:
Amazing - Noticeable jagged edges but not horrible - AMAZING
I'm hoping I don't notice the jaggys as much when my S3 arrives due to the smaller screen size yet still high resolution. Just holding a Galaxy Note on it's own though I can definitely tell a difference, there doesn't have to be a side to side comparison. It was just "Well this looks pretty good, but it is not perfectly sharp like my iphone or htc one X look" It just kind've has an overall lower resolution look to it due to the pentile arrangement, but I didn't find it a deal breaker.
I didn't find the brightness an issue though, it IS too bright at 100% brightness. I liked my Note at around 50-70% brightness.
My friend has a Note and I haven't noticed jaggies using it, and I have 20/15 vision. It's a pretty beautiful screen in my opinion.

I probably should have put this in Q & A like mentioned, my bad.
But I'm puzzled by responses like above. I guess my eyes are very sensitive. I will agree different people have different perceptions. But I found the S II very dim even in a dimly lit store. I have a feeling I'd not be able to see it at max. brightness outside. And I love the brightness on iPhone and Droid LCD screens. It's wonderful. Even those are a bit dim outside but they are okay. Inside they are wonderful.
Hmm I'm worried if your S II is better than an S III that does not bode well. I hope perhaps the store model was messed up somehow. I know those get abused. Thank you also for your time everyone. I should have not said suck in the title but I wanted to emphasize I found the Nexus, S II and Note VERY dim, to my eyes at least. Something is/was wrong with all of those phones, then, because they are plenty bright, even in direct sunlight. That, or you were wearing sunglasses the entire time. The iPhone is extremely bright, and I have actually hurt my eyes looking at it on full brightness if the room is not bright. Maybe you have less sensitive eyes than you thought. Not insulting you, just saying that my SGS2 was plenty bright and the iPhone 4 I'm using now is even brighter. I don't know how bright it really needs to be.
I don't know what dimness you see.. But you could always turn up the brightness. The gs3 display is beautiful. Way better than the s2. It looks brighter and just has better color. I love it. The viewing angles are amazing.

My S3 is set at about 45% and is a great level. If you set it at 100% it is really bright and I cannot see how anyone would complain that 100% is not bright enough.
The screen is also very sharp and looks fantastic.

If you find the note to have visible pentile pixelation then it will be worse on the gs3 due to heavy sharpening applied. I know because I compared the 2 side by side.
btw the HTC one x display is pretty poor even by gs3 standard. The gamma is washed out and yellows and oranges are overblown to the point that skintones looks horrible. Text while sharper than on amoled displays suffer from poor contrast making it even harder to read.

I don't think you're thinking of the right phone. Every review states the HTC One X is the best display on any phone they have ever seen... And most Galaxy S3 reviews make a comparison saying it's good but not near as good as the One X display.
For example here is the Techie-Buzz.com review
"The display on the one X is too good to be true and the color and temperature reproductions are the most accurate I have ever seen on a phone."

Agreed. I do graphics sometimes. By nature of what I do, I deal with image processing at times.
All these OLED phones were dim to my eye. And it was in a moderately lit store so it's a charitable scenario. LCDs blew the AMOLEDS out of the water in birghtness, sharpness, and yes, color accuracy, in my eye at least.
I like my screens bright, though. I use my MacBook Pro at 100%, nice and bright. I use my Droid at 100% always also. All OLED displays I've seen are very dim. What blows me away is everyone saying they are TOO bright. I'm really surprised by that!!!!
I guess I shall see when my S III arrives... Honestly, if I even have tint or ink marks I'll swap it for some other 4G phone. I wish one phone could have it all but it seems there's always a tradeoff. Unfortunately, I value screen quality more than specs and dev support, even though I was reeeally looking forward to all the other awesomeness of the S III. But with a dim screen all of that is useless to me...if I can't see it! I'll post my impressions when it's in...
Also I know this is kind of a negative thread but I'm really impressed by the XDA community. I found my way here after pre-ordering my S III and seeking more info. Everyone here is so quick to reply, knowledgeable, willing to intensely and intelligently discuss everything about phones and tech. Cheers to the XDA community.

Well I just used S III in store again. And compared to my Droid 2 it looks like crap. And my Droid 2 looks like crap compared to HTC One X.
I just used an Incredible 4G LTE. Well, it was nice and bright and sharp. It's LCD. It's small and low-res though. I'm very sad about this but I think I'll have to pick the Incredible 4G.
S III has everything else about it perfect. But the screen is so dim and crappy, to my eyes. Also HTC Inc 4G boot loader is unlocked. Although with the firestorm brewing here maybe VZW will eventually unlock your boot loaders. My S III still isn't in yet but I think I'm 90% of the way to deciding to get the Inc 4G. Really wish S III had LCD. :/
Also I have to note: the colors on AMOLED are truly bizarre and over-saturated. Look at Google Maps on an LCD phone compared to an AMOLED phone. On the SIII the orange highways are the color of a traffic cone and the red "A" dot over my city is the color red of a red laser pointer. Nuts. Way over-saturated. It's just annoying. AMOLED, speaking as a graphics pro, to me it just does not look like it's ready for use yet. I think Samsung jumped the gun. It's got almost no advantages and a ton of drawbacks. SLCD simply destroys it in every way. It's making me rather sad I'm getting a puny little Droid Incredible 4 because the SAMOLED screen is so crappy.

Have you looked at it then looked at an LCD?
Sorry it is WAY DIMMER. this is a FACT. Open up Google News in an LCD and AMOLED phone. Compare. What do you think? Specifically, how white does white look on AMOLED?
And: ink marks, tint, black crush, over saturation, burn in, etc. on AMOLED.
I'm trying to be objective here. I really just wish Samsung would use LCD. Photos of comparisons do not accurately portray the differences between these two displays at least based on my experiences...you have to see them in person. Although even without seeing an LCD once, as soon as I fired up S III for the first time I was disappointed. I was like oh crap, that's seriously full brightness? Uh oh.

I guess my eyes are just super sensitive.. I never would have thought that. I wear pretty serious glasses even. Ah well. Although I have good night vision. It's not like I need things bright to see them. I just feel like S III is annoying because it's dim. Constantly annoying. Can't deal with that for 2 years, no way.
Perhaps sometime next year there will be a phone with all the awesomeness of SIII but with IPS LCD display or a nice AMOLED..

Same here. My SGS3 is fantastic, I actually prefer it over the HTC One X that I had for nearly a month.
