Just heard about this and didn't see it posted on here. Very excited about this! I wish it would like come out NOW!
Finally can get good and real use out of that lapdock!
Wonder how this will work out. I hope they release it so we can benefit from it and it's not just something that will be unique to new phones hat come out!

I saw in another thread that it's an Atrix 2.

Lets not hold our breath on whether we'll get it or not.. Looks like they are looking for developers from the companies to get compatibility development going...
I wish someone would release an DIY on how to compile the ARM ubuntu for us to mod our webtops...

No freaking way.

I hear ya....
I wish sometimes I had the technical know how to make these things... it's such a great idea, and if it was possible. I couldn't imagine the capabilities.... especially with things like the lapdock

this may just be a foolish hope, but I see many similarities to the current webtop, so the atrix might be one of the first devices with this feature. Who knows, maybe it will replace webtop under the upcoming ICS release

You can already run Ubuntu on the atrix...

What you're saying is like saying I can run windows on my phone...
not sure if you understand the point of this?
What you refer to is VNC (virtual network computing)
this is native (as in ubuntu runs off the phone interacting with the kernel itself)

Hmmm so the Ubuntu Installer app in the market is VNC? I'm pretty sure it installed a legit Ubuntu 10.10 ARM optimized on your phone.

The one in the market will mount the Ubuntu image as loop device. Then, you can use VNC to remote into the GUI of the image. It works, but is not optimal.

this. the ubuntu installer is like a gimmick lol
i'm definitely not holding my breath. not a chance in hell moto will waste moneydelivering an upgrade of this caliber to a year old phone. better believe i won't be upgrading again unless that upgrade has this tho =D
unfortunately our best hope is in the community devs. and considering they're working on their own time and not getting paid, what kinda odds you figure? lol i'd donate time and money to this, btw i don't want a next gen atrix with a clunky ass 10lb lapdock. i like the one i have

[DEV] [HACK] Ubuntu Running on Nexus One!

Yey, I got Ubuntu running on Nexus One!
Full HOWTO posted on my blog here:
http://nexusonehacks.net/nexus-one-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-nexus-oneandroid/
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that you also need the latest version of busybox installed!!!
Also video coming soon.
That's really exciting, though I'm afraid it's incapable of daily use.
Awesome, I was wondering when something like this would happen.
Yeah, that does look really cool..i think it would be a lot easier to use if there was a way to avoid using vnc, but that would probably be very difficult to do.

ROFLMAO! Sorry...my heads in the gutter right now!
Guys that is VNC! The dude there is not actually running Ubuntu on the phone!
Through VNC you can connect to OSX and Windows 7 as well.. so what's so special here?
You cannot connect to Windows7 or Mac, when you type in a VNC localhost to connect!
So Ubuntu run on the phone and you use it with the xserver with a vnc viewer.
I hope so

[Q] pc on android.....

I was wondering if anyone could put a windows computer onto a android. Maybe just a virtual computer on android that is not remote controlled. Is this possible to have this on an android phone, if it is, pleaz give me some suggestions.
when windows 8 rolls around maybe we'll be able to install that instead of android. the current windows versions just aren't compatible with ARM CPU's however.
Never will you be able to run any current version of windows. At this time you might be able to get Ubuntu working on your device with a ton of hacking. Windows is closed-source.

It doesn't take a ton of hacking. Not just to run an ARM image. Most devices support chroot with loopback devices. I have BackTrack 5 and Ubuntu 11.04 on my phone using these.

you would need an x86 emulator or some sort of virtualized x86 machine running on arm. it would suck... big time.
time would be better spent looking at what you need windows for and just making an android app that does that.
I've seen bochs port on iphone few years ago with win95 installed on it.
It was veeeeery slow. In my opinion is wasting of time to play with it
I would not say its impossible. But its just behind impossible. Til now no any android phone running with Microsoft platform. Even I am not seeing anything like this in coming future.

Not at all easily. The hardware doesn't meet the specs to run it. This is a really odd question, but not a bad one.
I mean if you want to your HTC thunderbolt to look like Windowz 7.

why not? Same screen resolution, processor is on the list. Not sure what specs that don't add up.
Had a hd7 and must say I would love a wp7 lte device.
try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913815
Is it possible? Theoretically yeah, but so are lots of things no one does. Has someone asked this same question before? Yes, and they didn't get a better answer .
The biggest issue would be the drivers for the lte radio working and the interface layer for the radio. Other big issue is finding some one that cares enough about windows on it and had the knowledge to do it.
Will it happen? Probably not with this phone.

i believe its possible, theres a dual boot for it although 4g might not work. i dont see it not working for the tb
It's far easier to go from a windows device to linux than linux to windows, since those with the know how are used to dealing with migrating the windows device world to linux, but not linux to windows (since they generally don't want to do that).

Works fine except for installing packages, ubuntu version is old and no more mantained, and tried an upgrade procedure with update-manager -d and didn't work.
Yay, exactly what I have been waiting for. But for the life of me, I can't seem to download the file. Can you upload it to multiupload.com or something?
Will be testing this when i get home! What version of ubuntu is it running? Might even be able to use it for completely replacing my laptop. Need something i can program on, and this might be the ticket!

That may be the best idea for a Nexus tablet announcement I've ever heard. Announcing the first official Google Nexus Tablet, typically great specs, with a great dock/keyboard, and the announcement of an android app Android SDK.
This, plus some really nice plug & play style USB port usage would make for a killer announcement.
I would recommend VNC Viewer, it is $10 but it works much much better than android-vnc-viewer. About 2-3 times smoother than in the videos.

Thanks for the awesome guide. Got ubuntu nstalled and running without any issues but how do I access my files that is residing on my Android partition/SD card from within ubuntu ? Thanks
What does it take to get a version of eclipse compiled for arm?
Right now it errors saying "bash: ./eclipse: cannot execute binary file" (Google says that means you have the wrong version. ex 64 on 32 machine).

I installed yesterday's build (v158) and data is not there yet... The "dogfooding" Ubuntu Devs have it already and it should roll out soon to the dailies. I believe they have an internal build they are using to debug new features.

The dogfooding devs are using the same public images as everybody else. 3g data is technically working in those builds, but you have to use the command-line to turn it on, since we haven't written a GUI to do that yet

Yeah... since posting what you quoted, I've found out the how to's... Lots of steps. They don't make it easy for phone enthusiasts as opposed to Ubuntu users who are very familiar with Terminal commands/Shell/etc...
I realize they are still working on building a Beta Release. I'm trying my best to follow along and play catch up.
I've gotten my APN config set up on desktop and need to push it to the GNex. I've also found where Terminal is hidden on the phone...

Yeah, we're very used to working with Ubuntu users, but we're learning to do a better job making things easier for non-Ubuntu users. This is a new community for us to be involved in, and it's been wonderful so far, we appreciate all the support and feedback we've gotten from XDA.

I will say, I've been very pleased with the UI. Love the gesture driven approach that Ubuntu Touch has taken. As a webOS enthusiast I've been looking for something to succeed that as a passion. Ubuntu Touch remains very intriguing to me. My eventual plan is to switch over to UT as a daily driver... Meantime, I'm learning a lot and that's never a bad thing.
Hmm... I wish the RIL would work on the Galaxy S III (Snapdragon). As it is, we can't even get a kernel that kernel that will run an app for more than 15 or 20 seconds before it crashes. Still lots of work to be done I guess. Maybe I'll just go buy a N4 from T-Mobile.
