SEARCH FIRST: BEFORE Posting a New Thread - HTC Rezound

So you have a question. We've all had them. In fact, many have had the exact same question you have right now. And most of those questions have already been answered. So please search for those answers before posting a new thread.
Now that the dust has settled with the unlocking, ICS leak, mainver and OTA, most likely there's already a guide written to deal with the exact same issue you want to ask about.
Not only will you get your answer more quickly, you will also keep from cluttering up the message board with yet another thread asking the same thing others have asked and have answered already.
Lately there has been a plethora of new threads asking basic questions that have been answered many times and definitely have guides already written and it gets increasingly frustrating to have to see these over and over again.
So please, search first. Research. Read. And then if you really can't find the answer post in an appropriate existing thead. If there really isn't one, then start a new thread.
Thank you and good night. You've been a great audience.

The worst offenders aren't gonna see this and post anyway. They won't even read stickies usually

Yeah, it's not like it's a brand new forum protocol. *sigh*
Well, I got it out of my system, now I can get on with my day.

Jeeze dude, I'm freakin sorry. I wish there was a way you could see my search history so I could prove to you that I had in fact searched for the mainver info before posting my thread, but I simply overlooked you're awesome thread that had exactly what I was interested in.

Honestly the best thing to do is to ignore them. Not post something they won't read
No offense but con is right

Of course he is right.

Seriously, there had to be a bunch of people who have just purchased this phone recently. I'm sure the sale that Big Red is having isn't going to help things. I love that people are getting this phone because it's just amazing, but people do need to read everything before they just start posting questions. And they need to read everything before they start flashing crap on their phones. Just because you did it on one phone doesn't mean you'll know what you're doing on this one. Ou S-On, Dev Unlocked Rezound is a different beast altogether.

I came from a Droid X and before I picked up the rezound, figured all android devices were the same! Boy was I wrong This has been a learning curve but in time Ive learned a LOT from reading all of the threads in this forum.I've only had a single mainver error, which was easily remedied. Other than that, I've been a flashaholic for the last 2 weeks trying to find something that feels like home and I still havent bricked my phone . The guys/gals in this forum who post fixes and guides are all badass!

It's all good man.
The funny part is, I completely agree with you and this thread. I'm actually a little ashamed that I didn't find you're thread originally.
Really though, thanks to you and all the other devs that do all this hard work. I'd really like to be able to spend the time and learn how to do some of the Rom development, or theme dev'ing, or something to contribute. Not in the cards though with a busy job as a software support tech, and a 3 year old and another on the way at home. Time isn't on my side for hobbies like this. So, to get to the point - thanks a lot, much appreciated.

Its actually getting to the point that searching for stuff ends up a waste of time due to the clutter. You know how many threads have something to do with the mainver issue alone in General? Almost a hundred. That is insane. And some people wonder why others get grumpy when they don't use a search function. What would be awesome if we added extra code to the site and when the hit the Start Thread button, it asks them if they did a search.

It will show a list of other threads with the same words in the title, but they aren't just from the Rezound forums. But as con mentioned, the people who don't search aren't going to look at those either.

You mean like when there are about 9 different threads going at the same time to tell everybody that "Sense sucks" ???

the only problem is, if your browsing these forums via your rezound, search doesnt work properly. if you tap on the "search" button, once the pop up appears and you try to enter text, the pop up disappears and you cant search. it does that on both dolphin hd & opera. dont recall if ive tried on another browser.... but as it happens on more then 1, its not a problem from one particular browser.

The ETA is only known by Cotulla and his team, so don't bother asking here

At the risk of sounding like a "jumped up moderator wannabe", may I suggest a little bedtime reading for you......
Now please can we stop the flamewars? Here's some more guidance for all of you:
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.5 New Members: Treat new members the way you would have liked to have been treated when you were a new member. Provide the new members with guidance, advice and instruction always with respect and courtesy.
There, now be nice to eachother and tell the kid that it's not appropriate to start this thread and that he has to search. The Mod's can decide whether or not to close this thread, but never resort to flaming dudes
come on though its everyday we see this....
and really do we need it like ive said have a thread and update it everyday but lock it so no one can add to it. just giving the link to his twitter on something this will save some much time in peoples lifes flaming and slagging off other members have the title "NAND IS COMING READ ABOUT IT HERE" JOB DONE
Sorry but when i was a junior member i didn't spam whole of xda with useless posts
I did my research before i posted anything sometimes even ending up looking for hours for one stupid thing.
Its not a socializing website its a mobile development related forum. There is an after hours section in here for that. Also several threads concerned discussion of NAND and android development are present as well as a thread used for Q&A regarding both matters mentioned.
Theres tons of threads like this cause of posters like OP and its just spam. And it seems no matter how many people write answers like these they never bloody get it that there's a search button about 3/4 from the bottom on the right side of the screen.
One the matter of fact its a bit silly and unobservant not to actually be able to see all these threads cause they pop up like mushrooms after rain
Thread closed.
Don't flame.
OP, read rules regarding search before posting please. Don't ask for eta when it's documented to be in progress.

Just Got My Galaxy S2...

Ok, so I just received my galaxy s2 today and immediately noticed a difference between it and sprint's variant [Epic 4G Touch]. In the settings under display on the Epic 4G Touch you'll immediately find a setting that says "Screen Mode". However on AT&T's variant this setting seems to be missing. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this...

Build a man a fire, and you keep him warm for the night.
Set that man on fire, and he won't be cold again for the rest of his life... and you don't have to hear him whine anymore.
That's a bit different from the "teach a man to fish" quote which is one of my favorites.
Seriously - "search and read before posting" is rule 1 on XDA. Anyone who had taken a few hours to read would know the answer to this.
If you don't have a few hours to read, you don't belong here. If you can't spend a few hours reading and researching, you don't have the time to waste a few hours when you **** up your device because you didn't read/research.
Any time I pick up a new device, I spend at least a few hours researching it before I make even one post in its forums. It is clear that some people in this thread did NOT do that.

I did search and read but didn't come up with anything until I actually read through 3-5 threads and I still didn't find of that info until reading and re-reading the changelogs for the roms that were aforementioned by "nitox.n2o". And I do the same sometimes spending a few "days" reading through anything I see as interesting. I've been flashing for years, helping people work though issues with their phones since my first android phone. You can call it a case of excitement, I mean I just got the phone in the mail mere hours ago and going through the settings that was the first thing I noticed [I own the Epic 4G Touch also] and having seen that option there everyday so it stood out to me as strange. Not an attack or anything just saying...

To be fair, that's because people asking questions that have already been answered wastes everyone's time. It dilutes the quality of XDA as a whole by lowering the signal-to-noise in each individual forum. Also, XDA has always been a place where people follow the rules. You either do (which means you would have searched and found your answer), or you don't, and people will get mad at you. Adhere to the GPL or applicable license, don't post/link/distribute warez, don't solicit for money, and search before posting.
Check here for a few more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=263
Kind people will occasionally do a "site:xda-developers.com yourQueryHere" and even give you a link to the thread with the answer. Everyone else will just flame you.
Thread has far outlived its usefulness.. Stop your petty bickering people.
That said, people really DO need to search more.. Really.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Forums will be changed up soon

Over the past month, Divine_Madcat and myself have seen a steady increase of new users join our forums. While this is a good thing, they all seem to suffer from the same thing... they cant read.
D_M and myself are constantly tending to reported posts (thank you BTW for those of you that do report posts to grab our attention to something that needs attending to) and threads. We seem to accumulate a lot of new threads which are basically questions like "How do I root my phone" or "I flashed 4.0.3 and now I cant make phone calls" or "How do I flash back to Stock?" which could have all been answers if two minutes were taken to look at the sticky threads...
We are in the process of trying to remedy this and have a few ideas up our sleeves. When more develops on this, we will let all of you know.
Speaking of Sticky threads, those are about to get a facelift too. Instead of having a huge plethora of sticky threads, we only need a few. Expect some new sticky threads to go up that encompasses the same information that is already there... it will now just be easier to see, refer to and be in one place.

Good to hear, I always thought we had way too many stickies that just confuses people.
I think there should be a test to verify that you can read and use the search function before you are allowed to post. And a probationary period where if a mod catches you asking a stupid question, you get sent back to the tutorial.
Though to be accurate, like my old sergeant used to say, "There are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions".

LOL....i love this.
we have a quote on our wall at the office:
'You can't fix stupid'
It would be great if new users couldn't post for a month. They would then be forced to search for the answers they need.
As I said, we have a few options we are throwing around... determining on which ones are actually possible and can be done on XDA is still being planned out. However, something should come out of it that will help with this issue.
Yeah, the idiots that CAN'T EVEN READ THE DAMN STICKIES and then whine about why they were attacked for NOT READING THE DAMN STICKIES are frustrating.
There is, across the Internet, at least one piece of forum etiquette that is almost universal:
READ ALL STICKY THREADS BEFORE POSTING. Why can't users learn this?

I demand retribution for commonly asked questions. I say when someone asks for something that's searchable, give them a CWM flashable zip that changes all of their app's icons to 100% transparent and removes the app names under the icon. That'll show 'em!
I like to suggest making the stickies stand out more. Right now the only difference is the little pushpin, which I admit I miss sometimes myself. Yes they are at the top, but it always looks likes there's a ton of them.
Some grouping box around them that says "STICKIES!! - READ THESE BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING!"
Highlight them a different color or something even.
Granted, that probably requires forum coding, which I don't know if mods can do (not skill, just accessibility).
Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
This is no different than the sign on a storefront that says "please use other door"... about half of the people will invariably try to walk in the locked / faulty door anyway.
I've seen this same thing on literally every forum I've ever been a part of so I for one look forward to seeing what the "powers that be" come up with to eliminate or at least minimize stupidity and redundancy once and for all.

I'm probably the only person in my gang that has never actually seen the vid. Everyone tried to get my to watch it, told me how gross it was, and I was like "why the frack would I want to watch it then?". To me, it's kinda like, "I think this milk is spoiled, taste this". Uhm, no thank you, I'll take your word for it.
A few things to consider -for a tough problem -
Moderators spend more time enforcing accurate post subjects. "Help Me" "I have a question" etc.
Close the stickies when they become redundant, off topic, or terminally "thanks", "that worked" etc.
A newcomer's forum. Those who want to help bring up the novices can check into this forum along with the newcomers helping each other out. Moderators can move posts that should be in this forum from forums where they don't belong. This could the "one month quarantine" forum for new registrants. Moderators could move posts to appropriate forums if the feel topic has wider appeal
A user moderation system like slashdot. slashdot isn't a question forum, but the user moderation system could be used for browsing over unwelcome posts tagged as newcomer, duplicate, etc
A forum that welcomes everyone and belittling of anyone for any reason isn't tolerated: hometheatershack. You will see newcomer questions handled only by those who really want to help; some members gently encourage newcomers to be more resourceful. The forum rules strongly encourage everyone to search around first. You will see the grizzled titan patiently answering the dumbass questions for the umpteeth time. Others obviously pass over them silently.
A middle ground like diyaudio, a forum populated by the world leaders in audio electronics. There is the occasional frustration at the newcomer but most just pass over or pitch in and keep teaching.
It is a tough issue. Just a few ideas from a long time forum user and newcomer to phone hacking. I've learned a lot from xda. Thanks!

I must admit I am guilty of this. The problem I have is while using the xda premium app , the search tool doesn't seem to let me search a specific forum , it searches all of xda. Deep idle in kernels

A friend was telling me that a custom kernel on his phone had a feature called deep idle where if your not using your phone it would idle lower than 100 mhz is their a sgh i777 kernel that supports this? If not we someone should totally make it.
It musta never occurred to you to look for over even one minute in the two (I repeat, that's two) kernel threads we have for our phone to gather some semblance of understanding of what you're talking about.
But here, lemme go ahead and answer this one for you. It's called deep sleep and yes, both Entropy and Gokhanmoral have it enabled in their kernels. Use CPUSpy to have a look for yourself.

Its hard not to be a **** when these sort of questions are asked. im not a developer, but since this is a development forum people don't take laziness lightly.
I might be opening a "can or worms" here but at some point, people need to stop flaming OP's for asking questions. This is just my opinion but the people that immediately flame someone for asking a question (whether its stupid or not) is just cluttering this forum more than the OP asking the question. If people are afraid of getting flamed they might just put some thought into it before hitting the Submit button next time. Or put some more effort into finding info before even starting a new thread. The flaming serves a purpose.

But while everyone is jumping the OPs ass he has a valid point he just didn't provide a link for it to be confirmed as a real thing. Anyway just as everyone says he didn't search still no one searched for deep idle confirming it a real working mod for kernels. So nobody searched. Just sayin.
Most times I would agree to "flaming" but in this case no one did what we are all told to do. Sometimes the op can be right however I can see how this got confused for deep sleep. It always did in the deep idle thread anyway.
And, as I already stated - if you read my kernel changelog for the last three releases you will see that I have primarily been working on cpuidle changes and the changelog is full of cpuidle-related changes!
Your link to a Hummingbird processor feature is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to Exynos, which has a completely different set of idle states.

definitely not disagreeing with you because you are completely right but I think the problem, here, is that some people dont know the terminology. Even if he searched for 'deep idle' as he worded it in this thread title, it wouldn't return 'cpuidle' as you have it in your thread. But then, that raises a completely different issue altogether - which is that people need to learn the terms before posting threads.
just an observation and nothing more than that

Maybe irrelevant but I wouldn't know the difference. I'm just a noob here. True things are very much different and yes I read the changelogs which I'm grateful to have. I was just saying it's a real thing. It seemed like it was getting confused with deep sleep. I meant no harm. My bad.

Actually, no. Im not about to let this place be a flamefest. I dont want people to be afraid of getting flamed so they dont post. If they do post and its against the rules or warnings, they will be delt with... thats what D_M and I are for. In fact, D_M put up this post and the last paragraph says that Users who flame will get infracted too. Flaming is against the rules, period. In times where we get several new threads started and everyone gets irritated by it, a snide comment or two may be made and in the past we have let that slide, but its starting to get out of hand now. I can open up the most recent 20 threads and 90% of them will have some sort of flaming in them.
The flaming may serve as a "purpose" but that dosent automatically mean that its right or warranted and D_M and I are going to start cracking down on this as it seems to have really blown up lately and seems to be "the cool thing" to do. This site is about Developing for phones first, then helping out the community second. Flaming, where as I said sometimes may be slipped in, should not be the automatic response.
Maybe calling them flames is wrong, they are gentle persuaders.
I don't respond to every lame post, mostly just the ones that I know could be answered by doing a search or that refer to something already in a Sticky or a thread on the first page that could have easily been found by simply reading the titles.

This is exactly how I felt when I read the first reply. Its rediculous, every other thread you see someone is getting flamed. If one of you can name one person who gained knowledge about something they were interested in without asking at least 1 stupid question I will banish myself from the internets.
As for terminology I didn't know what to call it this term "deep idle" was how it was described to me I didn't think to look for deep sleep or anything else because I THOUGHT that was the proper term for it.

Yes, but I was posting in the general forum part of this development website.
For the record, I am more confused than ever on this subject. Is it deep idle or is it deep sleep?

Everyone forgets the report button. You don't like the thread, ignore it or report it and let the mod decide.
Flaming is definitely getting out of hand.

I don't. The problem is there are too many posts like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22534430#post22534430
The guy posted a week ago looking for help on rooting and unlocking his phone, two things easily covered in the stickys and by reading the FAQ. He's back today with a new thread wanting help to install a ROM, also something he could find out about by just reading and searching. I say this all the time, this is NOT the help desk. No one is paid to be here and coming in with an entitlement attitude is offensive. Sure, there are some helpful people willing to put up with the BS, but that should not excuse anyone from recognizing that this is a developer's forum and that help is primarily on a self-serve basis.

agreed. I dont necessarily disagree with the flames but when you notice a daily trend, then its obviously not working and the mods need to take care of it. I end up getting more annoyed by reading all the flames, than reading the OP's questions.

just ignore the thread. Reporting and not replying to a useless thread will get further than flaming the OP.

Well that guy is not me and I don't see how his posts are relevant to mine. No one HAS to help, I was asking a simple question for anyone who feels like answering. If the forum isn't for us common folk why isn't it invite only? Jesus Christ why is it so hard to ask one question here?
I don't understand how this is a job for the mods either, its just a question; a question that I finally got some sort of answer to after 15 posts of debate on wether or not it was okay to complain that I desicrated your forum with my questions. You people take yourselves way too seriously.

[Guide/Info] What you need to include to get help

I have noticed that people in the q and a section are not posting nearly enough information in their post or title to get the information they need. This causes people to ask lots of questions and delay getting the answer they need. So this guide will show you what you need to include in your post to get the most efficient answer to your question.
We'll start with the Title:
- Please do not just say "HALP, PHONE BROKE" or "HELP" , etc.
- You need to be precise, and describe what you're looking for in your thread.
Next, the information you need to state before you even get into asking your question.
- The make of your phone. There are many different variants of your device. I9100 G/M/P/T
- Are you rooted/unrooted?
- What rom you are using? And which version? -and- What kernel are you using? And which version?
- Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
- Have you changed DPI? If yes, to what?
- Have you done anything to try to solve your issue? This would be very valuable information.
- Please (if on stock firmware) dial *#1234# and post the results (thanks to fxrb)
Then you can ask your question.
- Do not ask "What rom/kernel/theme is the best?" -or- Something that you have not searched for (it is infact very obvious if you havent)
- Be specific and precise in what you want/need. Do not write a 10, 000 word essay, or a 3 word question.
- Pictures say a 1000 words
Important things to remember:
- Be polite: People never want to help someone who wont appreciate it, or is rude to them. Remember your p's and q's
- Do not bump your thread: It gets annoying and against the rules
This is under construction and will take a bit to include all of the information needed. I know there are lots of more experienced users than I, and would love feedback of what to include. Please do not hesitate to post in the thread or even PM me with information you think needs to be included in this thread.
Stickies
- DO NOT POST A "What's the best ROM/Kernel/Theme?" THREAD!
- [Newbies][Experienced Users][RCs] New members friendly Q&A thread
- [KERNEL][REF][Q&A] Siyah 5.0+[ICS/CM10] 6.0b5+[JB/CM10.1] +DISCUSSION+. NON-DEV!!!
- Australian AU Galaxy S II (help/rooting/updates,etc)
- SGS2 Canadian Thread (Bell/Virgin/Sasktel/Rogers) Root/Unlock/Firmware/Modems/Mods
- New here? READ THIS THREAD FIRST. What Is Recovery & Download Mode?
- Frequently Asked Questions
One more: That's it
nice this should put an end to all "not understandable" questions out there

The thought is nice... but unless this is stickied (and even then), this thread will fall off the first page, and since the vast majority of n00bs (not new members, but "n00bs" - there's a huge difference) won't search, they won't see it.
Heck, there have been dozens of posts since you posted this that have been terribly short of any information.
But I applaud the thought.
You have to think how them noobs operate. They muck up their phone, stick the symptoms in a google search, and want an answer asap.
So they are not going to spend hours reading rules and stickies or use the search function.
I spent a week reading about stuff for the x10i I had before I decided to do anything to it.That way at least I had half an idea what helpers were talking about when/if I got into trouble.
When I joined this forum the s2 looked a lot more complicated and the forum looked a lot more "vicious"(like give that guy 20xlashes since he didnt do a search).
Its a tough world lol

Yea, but we have to try. At least now we have something to guide them to and for the new people to refer to. If we dont at least have a guide for how to get good answers to their questions theirs no standard.. Now there is
Nice thread
hope users follow this
Doubt many people will take notice of this (for a whole host of reasons; don't get me started), but props for trying (thanked OP).
Edit - Oops. Sorry. So used to giving crap threads on here one star I did it to yours accidentally (intended to give it 5).
+1 to search first before posting.

Oh absolutely. As I said, good that you've tried, I just don't see it making any difference is all. 90% of people who post here are idiots, that won't change.
No, nothing to add. I think you've covered it well.

in relation to search and read before asking questions...
just wanted to share that I've got a nicely setup dualboot with the siyah kernel, RootBox JB 2.1 as my second rom successfully patched with the autopatcher 1.6 and a fully working pdroid. That's it...
Since i have less than 10 posts I cannot thank the developers in their respective threads (at least that's how i get the message). I think this is my 5th post so I guess i never make it to the developers section because i really don't know what questions i can ask and, answers i could give are all answered...
this must be a "new member" problem rather than a n00b one?
Regards and 1 post closer

Yeah, but don't just get 10 posts just to say "thank you" in the rom Dev section. I van personally say that devs hate this as it clogs up the thread and doesn't add anything to anything. That is why xda has the thanks button, and the devs appreciate that more than saying it. In fact, it you really want to say thank you donate to them. Even if its 1 euro they will be very grateful.

course not it was kind of a semi-sarcastic post, I have more to say than thanks I spent countless hours reading and learning stuff (in general, it is fun after all!) and as far as this forum is concerned (which is really helpful btw!) it's difficult to then act (for the time being!). Example: Somehow I managed to post in a developer's thread 1-2 months ago, first a problem then I found the solution and posted it myself. I then got PMed by someone asking me for help. Only problem is I never got an email notification in spite of having a thread subscription so I didn't bother to check my PMs. As for donating, absolutely.

OK awesome. I'm used to people who just want to say thanks, so I have to mention something like that. But taking a look at your sign up date, of looks like you might be able to post in the Dev section without having 10 posts. I believe if you signed up before a certain date you don't need the posts. And of looks like you might fit in there. I would try it you never know
Edit: but enough off topic

Sadly I agree to everybody believing that this thread will not be read by those who should do so, sorry. However, if by accident just one out of thousand will read it then there will be 'only' 999 bad questions remaining - a small progress.
For this one out of thousand I would like to contribute something to the information section of this thread. For basic information I often ask people to dial *#1234# and post the result. As this thread is in the Galaxy SII forum this should work, at least as long as people are on stock firmware (probably use this conditionally ?).
