HTC inspire AT&T bypass lockscreen password - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My daughter has a HTC Inspire & recently lost it due to behavior unbecoming for a young lady!! My question is is there a way to gain root access in order to blow out the password file & access the phone or any other trick that wont reset everything? If im being honest, Im scared to death of what I might find but also believe its something that needs to be addressed before something even worse happens! Any of you with daughters know what im talking about.
I guess I could just record a youtube video of me putting a couple rounds in it!
Thanks in advance!

this should do it

That looks like a nice program to instal on the device after I get into it but as it stands now the phone is locked & I dont even think its even rooted at this time! I need a tool or windows download of some sort. Any help greatly appreciated!

How about this?
http://androidadvices.com/unlock-android-phone-forgot-pin-password-screen-lock/
It should work but it will require you to know the Gmail account (username and password) that your daughter used when she setup the phone in order to access android market on your PC and download the app.
Good luck

Do you know the # of characters for the password?
Start by trying things that you know your daughter is into... favourite band, tv show, etc.. or simple things like her birthday, her best friend's name
But honestly, why wouldn't you just ask her?
Tell her AT&T needs to know her password so they can try to recover the phone... just get creative, then once you unlock it install the app and you're good to go!

Yeah I figured out the password & tried to install the program but it says for security your phone is set to block installation of non market apps & takes me to settings but i couldnt find any options to allow me to do it.
Is this a relevant article or is there an newer or easier way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706887

Go to
Menu > Settings > Applications
Check the "unknown sources" box, good to go.
Not sure if AT&T still locks their phones from doing this.. but if so, the option won't be there..
I can't imagine that they would do still lock them from sideloading because then you wouldn't be able to use the Amazon app store..
Let me know

Jesus man ......... i so wish you hadn't posted this bro ........*sigh*.
I have 6 year old twin girls ......... and one of them Gretel ........ already has the most inappropriate friends you could possible imagine ...............
Am not being 'square' in believing 6 year olds do not need high heels am I??
That 6 year olds encouraging each other to kiss boys is unnecessarily early??
Or that in 2012 hair length and colour of garment should not be a big gender signifier??
Dood .......... please tell me it gets better??

Yeah its NOT giving me that option..... Im updating the software in hopes that fixes it. any other work arounds for sideloading if not?
And no sir unfortunately it DOESNT get better! Im gonna end up in prison!! LOL

No offence, but at six years old, you should be able to dictate who her friends are - so long as you have the mother's (wife's?) support
I do hear what you are saying.. environmentally it's hard nowadays.. so much inappropriate influence from media/friends/etc
but my five year old daughter does what I say.. end of story.. it all boils down to the parents. Act now brother! Save the children! (seriously) it only gets harder.

Yeah that would work where it not for the fact that my kids are at school full time 5 days a week 9am-3pm and the inappropriate kids are her school friends. I have no control over who see hangs with at school ........ just like every other parent.

Looking for solutions for something similar to this.
maybe a free solution..... Anyone heard or have any expeirence with anything like this?
mobile-spy.com

Go to htcsense.com, log on to the accpunt she useful for HTC apps. From there you can track her phone, forward messages and calls to another phone. Lock the phone, etc..... I love it because I lost it once and I tracked it down and found it, also I was able to forward everything to my galaxy s.

I thought it would be obvious that im talking about the leaked versions
it's just attention has been diverted that's all. if all the devs were working on rooting those leaks I have no doubt in my mind it would have already been, or very close to being rooted, but as it stands, most devs already have root on their phones so they arent as focused to rooting anymore, just providing more things already rooted phones. I'm sure there are some more devso ut there trying everyday to root it, but without as many, or as much work into it, it's going to be quite a while to get there.
I was looking into it myself, until my trackball stopped working and I got a replacement phone, so I guess I could be to blame as well for this.

devs are def. working on the issue. problem is, it's a no paying job.
I dont get the whole point in calling Android open source software if they have to lock our phones so we cant do anything. if we screw it up thats our fault so i dont see the problem

Yes, I recognized that some are still working on it, I just said that attention has been diverted greatly. do you think releasing an ad blocker, various roms, overclocking, froyo, live wallpapers, aosp/jit support they were busy trying to root at the same time? of course not, you can only do so much at once, and attention to rooting has shifted greatly. have they forgot about it completely? hell no! they just put it on the backburners.

google and android being open source has nothing to do with it. it's the carriers who prefer to lock down the phones.
A to keep the general public out of things that could hurt. could you imagine any old lady picking up an android phone and overclocking and the SU app, and all the other tools were there? it'd either destroy her phone when she messes with it, or left alone entirely because she doesnt know what they do. eitherway? they become pointless to have on the phone.
B to keep users out of things that cost more money. did you know you have to actually pay verizon an extra addition on your bill to unlock tethering on the phones they allow tethering on? by having root, we can tether without them knowing on phones that don't usually have tethering and we can do it without paying for it. it's not exactly something they want going on, so they lock the phones down.
C safety. Having root access on our phone gives apps a lot more things to control, and with such, if anything malicious gets on our phone, it can do more damage on a root user then a locked down phone.
so take the nexus one for instance, if you bought that through google, not a wireless provider, it still has root on it for the first and last reasons I mentioned. to keep the general public out of things they don't need to be getting into/understand how to control. and with the safety lockdown, the average person who goes "oh what's this?" *click* on a malicious app doesnt get that chance.
it's not about keeping us out, it's about making the service providers happy, and keeping the general public safe.
google has put into android a very simple way to get root access for us all, it's the phone hardware (and their custom software additions) and the service providers that make it harder and harder to get into the system.
makes sense, but safe from what? its a phone... it wont kill you
buttttt how would you go about getting a pre rooted nexus one even if you dont have t mobile and just want the phone?

No the phone wont hurt you, just your pocket when the average person, who knows zip about what they are doing with a rooted phone totally bricks the phone and has to buy a new one, at full retail price. Or perhaps they load up a app that causes major issues with the phone, causing it to lock up/fail. again hurting the pocket book by having to buy a new phone at retail price.
I'm not trying to be a **** here but I'm fairly certain that when any of us load anything onto the phone we're aware of the risks it could bring, I would hope you went into this with the same mentality.
that is what we are saying, anying who can make an account on XDA, actually, anyone who has even HEARD of xda is probably smart enough to not do any brick-inducing stupid moves.
I'm talking about the average person who doesnt know the difference between RAM and ROM here, it's locked down to protect them from their own dumb moves.

thats exactly what im trying to say. if we screw up our phones that our own fault so i dont see why we should worry about others who brick their phones and end up buying new ones. thats their fault and they can deal with it
(now because i said that if im ever able to root ill probably brick my phone trying) karma sucks...
but still.

Samsung Vibrant Questions

Hey guys, newbie here and I got some questions for y'all.
I am a longtime iPhone user, thinking about switching over to the Vibrant. I'm used to the jailbreaking/unlocking of the iphone...are similar things able to be done to the Vibrant?

Ok a few things.
Yes, you can root the vibrant and install custom roms.
On the iPhone you can install hacked apps, meaning you don't pay for them, techinically you can do the same on an Android phone by just having the apk file, however this is frowned upon because that is stealing. Why not just pay for the app? Apps are cheap on Android.
If you are a current iPhone user and if you purchase the Vibrant, YOU WILL BE UNHAPPY. I suggest you wait for the iPhone 5 which will be released in June, or wait for the dual core Android phones coming out. Do not get the original Vibrant.
Ps...the Vibrant 4G is going to be released soon. You can also get the Nexus S at best buy.
btw coming to xda and saying you don't pay for apps and you steal them was not a wise idea.
Go back to the iphone, this isn't the place for you.

Stay classy!
OP:
Yes, you can "jailbreak", for Android it is called root, and in turn you can install custom ROMs, Kernels, and for the Vibrant "modems" (radio's on other phones). As for "free" apps, Android, unlike iOS, has TONS of free apps already. Developers tend to offer a free and paid version, main difference is the free version has ads in it. Developers actually make more money off the ad revenue (typically) than the paid versions. There are still apps that are only paid, or the full version are paid only, and to be very honest trying to get those for free is BS in my opinion, especially given the prices.
This site is FULL of all the info you need to root any Android phone and start loading custom ROMs. It is very addictive, and compared to the iPhone, it is like living in America versus living in China in terms of freedom to do what you want. In China (iPhone) you are limited in your ways, and can do as you please to an extent. Where as in America (Android) you are free to do as you please, but have a great infrastructure to help guide you and aid you in such venturers.

I am not on AT&T, I am on T-Mobile. I have had a 3G for the last 2 years, but with the new ios4.3 comes out, it will not have an update for the 3G, they are getting fazed out. So I'm moving away from the iphone for a while, may get a 4 down the road.
I understand cracked apps are illegal, a TMO CSR pointed me to this website, so if cracked apps aren't talked about here fine, I didn't know. I was just going where I was told by Tmobile to get information regarding it. Simple as that.
I have a free 2 year upgrade at TMobile right now, so I'm looking between the Vibrant and the MyTouch 4G. Right now I'm using a Blackberry Bold 9780.

Warez is not just frowned upon, but is grounds for banishment on XDA, and actually every single decent Android site. Explaining how to get it, where to get it, or giving it out is a major no no, and asking (especially after being told) is a no no as well.
This isn't iOS where everything costs money, this is Android where you can literally get 95% of apps for free from the market. There is no need to steal, not that there is on iOS (I have an iPad, love it, and have paid for my fair share of apps even though it is jailbroken).
Lastly, if that is your only desire in a phone, then just don't get one. If all you want to do is use your phone to steal, then you don't deserve to have a phone.

Welcome to XDA! I came to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3G and I love it, as one has said you can steal apps but no one here will help you with that, also apps seem to generally cheaper on android than they are on iOS.
Depending on what you are looking for you may be happier where your currently have. Android's market is growing quiet well but I feel that it currently doesn't match the iOS market when it comes to games, so if games are your thing I would stay away (but we do have great emulators!) Many things may have changed in iOS since I used it last back in 3.0 something another.
Now few things I love personally love about android! Google Voice is easily used, Ive been using it for about 2 years now and haven't given out my real number since, its the best! Google maps is amazing, always getting updates haven't used a standalone gps since. You can customize the desktop however you feel please (don't need winterboard and everything, its just a ton easier). Swype is pure amazing, I could never go back to normal texting after getting use to it, super fast! And finally googles voice integration, you can talk and have it type what is said, you can have it search for you or even open your google maps and have it set your navigation!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now the forum has a lot of idiots who have nothing to add to the community except their derogatory remarks, sadly they don't seem to ever go away do they?

Rooting does what jail breaking did for the iphone. Allows you to do what you normally couldn't. Its also really easy to do, there are a few different things you can use but they all get the same thing done.
When you root you can install new rom's like a 2.3 rom if you wish. There developers who change them how they wish and then share them with the community, you can find them in Vibrant Android Development part of the forums. You can also download new kernels that will allow you to overclock your phone or even underclock if you wish.
In the android market there are some apps that also require you to root your phone to use them. One such app is Titanium Backup, it will back all the apps and stuff you have downloaded so if you install a new rom or lose your phone or something you can easily reinstall everything.
Basically rooting fully opens up your phone, allowing anything.

[Q] Help! Just got HTC Evo 3D and I can't hear anything

maybe someone can help me. im used to having a blackberry however i got htc evo 3d today and making or receiving calls is hell. i can't hear anyone.
and evo won't sync my contacts from gmail into the contact address book on the phone.
i am new to this phone so please explain what am i doing wrong and better yet what can i do to improve these before going insane.
thank u
The first thing that I would check is to make sure that your phone actually programmed. Next log into your gmail account online and make sure that your contacts are in my contacts and not other contacts. If they are on your phone, but not in your gmail, then what I would recommend that you do is export the contacts up to the memory card, and then re-import them to the gmail account. They will sync from there. As far as the no sound thing, take it to a full service store and have them check it out. From there, depending on where you got it, you might need to go back to the original place of purchase and have it exchanged.

If you literally cannot hear anyone, take it to have it swapped out.
If you can hear people but it is very hard to hear try the hearing aids setting, I believe under the call menu in settings.
I did figure out how to get gmail contacts synced. thank god.
The hearing is just very very weak. Ive been reading that this is one major problem with evo 3d and that they haven't fixed the bug yet. Welllll how am I supposed to work on this phone if it sounds like the people im talking to are 100000000 miles away. even speaker is just very weak.
i did hear someone say theres a way to change the voice coding by bypassing through with some msl code. i called sprint and they refused to provide me the code saying that for security purposes they do not provide this code. i take it they dont want their phones unlocked so that we purchase all of their apps. just like the iphone. however i know there are ways to get the code but im not tech savvy and have no idea how to do this.
anyone? with any help i would really appreciate it.

Can our phones get hacked by random people?

Ok so I have a 3D on my line which belongs to my sister. Well she works at the mall and some Indian guy that used to work for Sprint is telling her he hacks into her phone all the time and uses her internet and that if he wanted to he can access her photos too. So is this possible or is he just bs'in to spark coversations with her? I'm about ready to go over to her job and confront him. I find that sort of behavior creepy and intolerable! Any1 has any idea??

idk man, you need to do some dental work.
I don't know if a "random" person could hack a phone. But:
1. Is the phone rooted? That would give a person more ability to do something bad.
2. There are "spy" software out there. But the guy would have had to have a few minutes alone with the phone.
3. Maybe install malware through an E-mail or text message.
But to use her phone for Internet access sounds pretty weak. Easier and better methods of doing that at a mall where public WIFI is all around.
Bottom line, if you are actually concerned, just have your sister do a factory restore, that wipes everything and then reinstall her apps one at a time validating all are suppose to be on her phone.

2. I know about the spy software stuff. I don't know if the guy ever had access to the phone. She did say she bought a case from him b4 and i wouldn't put it past her to put it on a strangers hands in her times of frustration. She's always having problems and going to someone for help.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

If that Indian guy (not me ) is using android phone or PC, he surely is using apps like FaceNiff, Cain & Abel, ANTI, ettercap, DroidSheep, NetCut etc....
So this app should help but it will not work to its full potential as your Sisters phone is not rooted.
Or you can tell her to disable internet or wifi on her phone.
P.S You said the guy used to work for Sprint, Is your Sis using a Sprint Phone?
Is her phone CIQ free?
wloftus had it down.
The only other thing I can think of is he has get password to a security app that can backup pictures and whatnot.
Bottom line is this sounds like a classic harassment case. Get him to text her about this for evidence, go to the police, he gets arrested and the girl is protected by a no contact order. Pretty simple.

I've hope it's obvious that I was joking about the violence as I do think the police should get involved if this guy is harassing her. The implication from the op is that this guy is doing this from a distance so the wifi hot spot does not seem to be the way he is doing it. Since he worked for sprint, he could be using a back door of some sort.

1. No
2. I know about the spy software stuff. I don't know if the guy ever had access to the phone. She did say she bought a case from him b4 and i wouldn't put it past her to put it on a strangers hands in her times of frustration. She's always having problems and going to someone for help.
3. Probably
And yea I guess I'll tell her to do a hard reset. Thanks!

its not possible - andvwhen he works for sprint, you should go to his boss.
when he touched her mobile phone, you can go to court (when you want to)
has she enebled usb-debugging/adb access? disable it.
check all installed user apps if there is dome suspicious with ****loaads of permissions (camera, file access, microphone, etc)
lol enough to kick this guy in the ass with your rights

She doesn't connect to public wifi shes on sprints network so i doubt that app would help. I just had her do a hard reset on it. Hopefully that helps idk.. And yes its a Sprint phone Evo 3D completely stock on the latest software htc released.

He no longer works for them he used to.
Well if anything I'm just tryna get his whole name because the Sprint rep last night wanted to flag him and start a case. So far only know first name so I have to wait till I go again this week.
I doubt she would enable usb debugging she's not that kind of girl to know what that is. All she do is calls, text, fb, and some web browsing at the most..

Do any of you know anything about software at all? there is only one way to get into the phone and that is through the bluetooth. Other than that, very unlikely someone IN A MALL COULD DO THAT! there are hundreds of phones. plus, one threat like that to start off is subject to be terminated from any position he is in. HE likely got fired from sprint because he acts like he can do things he has no idea about.
However, 99.9% chance there is NO WAY the stupid small penis indian man can get into her phone. but one fact is that his face needs punched more than a few times... just make sure no one rats you out. make sure there is no one that sees you smash his face in. If the Indian doesn't learn a lesson now he'll just keep playing this game with everyone he walks into. He needs to learn one way or another.
Oh, I'm being nice too. If we were in any other country. he'd just have a bullet through his head.
However, I shouldn't even have said anything about the bluetooth part... but everyone needs to understand.. this is a topic we shouldn't even talk about. the reason is that kids that have no lives will use this information to attempt to find ways to spy on their gf's and stuff because they are low life fools.
anyway, to end this off.. I do thank everyone in here for being valued members of this forum... Remember do things responsibly. Anyone caught in here violating any law or creeping on others should be banned without question and legally should be held responsible for their actions.
to finish it completely off. the indian guy is a creep. he was fired from sprint for the same bs he doing to her. report him and have him fired again. PS. there is nothing in my comment that is racist, wrong, bad, blahblahblah. I'm a perfect little angel.

well, you can not only go into it via wifi. so my question: do you know anything? (exploits, etc)
if the mall has a open wlan, she should use secure sites only "https://blablabla.com" only... it is possible to hijack traffic, for example in malls "man in the middle method" (do not know why i know this.... )
another way to secure her phone is, to deactivate the installation of unsigned / non-market apps.
also, a password or sth other to unlock isnt a bad idea.
so, have fun - btw, you could ask that question for every android handset, op

There are WiFi sniffing tools on android. There are WiFi spoofing tools on android.
Possibility is there, change Gmail password never hurts.
But seriously, no sharing WiFi with other people and logging into private bank/Facebook/ other sites where your logged in with 50 other people on open WiFi. That stuff can be picked up, username/passwords.
Intimidation is the best answer...big guy comes up "alright who's the yutz messing with MY sister!"

[Q] Abuse and GPS tracking

Hey XDA!! I came here because I know you're quick to deliver the help. I'm not sure if this should go in Q&A or the Development section, and you'll see why in a bit.
A friend of mine (we’ll call him M for ease) recently came to me with a concern. His coworker's ex-boyfriend has been hassling and harassing her using her Android phone. **BEFORE I go any further, YES I have suggested that the proper authorities get contacted.** At first he was allegedly sending texts to MY friend via the girl’s phone. He had some forwarding/spy type app (that’s all I could figure out from some research) on her phone that would allow him to text it, and then those messages would forward to M as if they came from his coworker. I have no idea how he could have done that, and I couldn’t find a lot of apps in the play store that seemed to have similar functions.
But now, he is apparently trying to get the poor girl to install a GPS tracker on her phone (unwittingly, I assume) so he can, well, know where she is. M can’t tell me the name of this app because he’s unsure.
So at this point I’m thinking that we not only have someone who’s being evil, but who is *maybe* making his own apps to stalk and get this girl, and my friend, in trouble at work.
I found a GPS spoofer on the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lexa.fakegps&hl=en I have offered to help root phones and install this and do whatever is necessary to get this guy off their backs. I can test it all day long since I have a rooted device—my question is, I don’t have a spy app to spoof, nor do I know what exactly I’m trying to spoof, so how do I know this will be helpful?
I’m also considering finding a custom ROM and helping this girl lock her phone down more. Or telling her to call her carrier and change her number. Beyond that, does XDA have any suggestions or advice? I’m not a coder, but I can follow directions to change things if you tell me exactly where to go and what to change (i have dabbled a teensy bit in android source code before breaking my phone >_>)
The girl has a Samsung Dart, I’m currently unsure of the version of Android it’s running, but should find out soon and will edit the post.
Thanks for all the help!
You can format the phone and see if that works. Plus there are many text blocker apps on market.
Hope i helped .

Yes ,I patiently read the entire story! Wipe the phones data !
As far as the text problem you said I don't think there is anything like that which could receive an sms from a number and then forward it to another number. So there are two options either the girl sent the text or the guy semt the text with a spoof number!
And as far as the GPS is concerned, one doesn't need a GPS tracker to know where one is! Just Google maps is enough if the guy has the girls mail in his contacts. Ask her to change the mail id it should be enough!
