Has Asus given a reason for the lack of Face Unlock on the Prime? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Has Asus given a reason for the lack of Face Unlock on the Prime?
Our front facing cam is a high enough resolution, we have ICS, and from what I've read on these forums the files are on the device.
We've had multiple ICS updates. When properly configured it is a killer feature and great marketing tool.
Why have they not enabled it?

I wouldn't wait on Asus to do it. one of our developers will enable it soon enough.

I found that odd too.
But really, it's doesn't matter to me if it's there. I just wanted to see how well it works.
I don't even have the lockscreen enabled, it's not really necessary

Face unlock is fun. I used it on the Atrix, the Evo 3D, the Evo and a few GNex and Nexus S devices as well. It was fun in the way Siri is fun though (trust me, I hate Apple, not because I am a google fan boy, because they haven't been the greatest either, but Apple's business ethics and their use of proprietary, non-open source irks me, as well as their litigious nature, sorry I digress... I am also drunk, ha). Having an 4S at work to goof off with is fun, and Siri is neat... for a few days, and when you want to show it off... but that it, after awhile the little quirks get to you, such as "Sorry, dont recognize you!" then the pin coming up. It did this if the light was just a little different, even after tuning it (taking multiple pics, shaven, unshaven, sunglasses, hat, haircut, etc)

ASUS is being tsundere to the community.

Question: If you have face lock activated, can you unlock the prime using a photo?

From what I have read in reviews - yes you can.
I feel FU is really just a gimmick, not something I would use, but wouldnt mind being able to test it on my prime

Face unlock actually works pretty well on the Galaxy Nexus once it's been trained. I'm just wondering why Asus has not enabled it since it doesn't seem to be a technical issue and they went out of the way to use pretty decent cams on the Prime.

Yep, you can see videos done of it on the web. Even a video of a guy using a picture on his phone to unlock another phone. It is a totally hooky and worthless function really. Neat, but not really useful.

good thing you are here to tell them which threads to close.. man thanks for the great posts.
IMO this thread is needed - so much negativity about the prime elsewhere and nobody's coming on to tell us any good experiences. Makes me want to cancel my pre-order.

agree.. i love my prime.. its the best android tablet out there right now. the build is the best out of any tablet.
the honeycomb bugs are still there, they are 10x better with the quad core and less noticeable. all comes down to ICS.
if was to sit in my closet with the lights off while my tab boots i could see a light bleed, good thing i don't use my tablet ever in the closet with my lights off. so i'm good with that.
Had the original Transformer as well as a whole host of other tablets. I still say this concept of the detachable hard dock is the most productive I've ever had. The added battery life and a mouse make it feel like an honest laptop replacement. In terms of comparing the new and old Prime, the new one has some obvious advantages in terms of size I really like the weight of it. I do agree with those who said it is a little harder to hold, the metal makes it a little more slick. When I have been using it as a reading tablet for a period of time it does matter
Flaws... well, my GPS doesn't work. I don't know that I care, but since I paid for it I want it to work. Since I have the Galaxy Nexus I realy like ICS, so I hope like hell we get it soon. THe camera facing you isn't great, but oh well. And docked it is definately top heavy and prone to tip. They should have distributed the weight a little more evenly.
Do I like it a lot? Yes! Do I love it? Not yet, but I have a feeling I will
Finally got mine and so far, I'm loving it. Love the weight. Zippy, no lag. GPS doesn't work, but I'm not terribly concerned with that at the moment. Everyone here at work is Ohhh-ing and Ahhh-ing.
My biggest gripe right now is that "everything" seems to be backordered. Waiting for a case and the dock.

This can go both ways as well though, positive or negative. More people tend to post negative stuff and not positive posts, because the positive people are playing with there TP and are to busy to post here . I don't own one yet, I am hoping today is the day though!

Yes, funny how some folks point out such things as "confirmation bias" only to... well... confirm their own negative bias. It's downright ironic.

I love everything about the TP. I've seen no lag whatsoever. The games look awesome. I plugged in the Hdmi cable and played shadowgun on my plasma tv and it looked great. The bluetooth controller from Gamestop is pretty slick also. I personally think it flies on the Internet. Page transitions are very fluid. I've read some negative comments about it's speaker but the one that it does have sounds great.

Agree. Let's all just ***** instead. Also, somebody posted this exact same link (and post) last week, as somebody else was trying to inject something positive into this den of negativity. I have to ask... Why pee on somebody's parade?
Mine is nearly flawless, and I am glad I made my purchase decision. The very few issues I have with it are due to apps stability.

that's not ironic, and I dont have any bias towards the Prime as I don't have mine yet (will by next Tuesday) so I can't judge the device negatively or positively.
But ever since I saw that word posted on this board I couldn't help but see how frequently many here are actively looking for information to fit their needs. Its an easy way to set yourself up for disappointment at worst, or be pleasantly surprised if underestimate it.

actually this thread doesn't. its more of the majority of negative threads/comments being thrown around lately. based on that definition from wiki. this tread is good and needed although there's a similar one called the positive transformer thread.
to the OP, I think from my various posts, lol, you can see that I love my device. it has been performing great and has no issues I've noticed, so far. this is way better than my Ipad all around. can't wait till developement starts, ICS, and more tegra3 games being released. this purchase was more than worth the money. I'm so glad that I didn't let the negativity, before and after release, deter me away from this device. especially since its performing so well for me right now. definitely is the best tablet out now, by far and will more than likely be that way for at least the next 4-6 months.

if you want a great volume boost to the already great sound get volume+. there's a thread on it in themes and apps section. I bit the bullet and got it last night. I confirmed the major increase in volume level with a decibel reader. it consistently showed increase in volume/decibels with speaker mod on. it ridiculous how much more louder and bass output this thing has now. and the sound was already great before. this just makes it even better. check out the thread.

Is Transformer Prime worth it?

I have been looking into buying a Transformer Prime Tablet but after coming on these forums I see that it isn't exactly a perfect machine. So how bad are these problems? How bad is the wifi? GPS? The tegra 3 is supposed to be 3x as fast as the tegra 2, is it? I understand that every piece of technology will have its ups and downs and you will always have people complaining but I hear even ASUS started acknowledging this? Also whats up with this new shut off problem and problems with updating or after updating?
Sorry to hit you guys with all these questions but Its a big investment, and my main use will be school.
Thanks in advanced!
Yes. If you want one of the better tablets out there, you desire a tablet that can replace most of a laptops functions and like a laptop you don't need a fully functional GPS you will love it.
If you are like all the other complainers out there about a tablet not having a GPS, then don't bother. We don't need another one of those complainers out there.
Good luck in your choice I am very happy with mine.

What about the wifi and the other common problems? Also I plan on getting a wifi only one anyways so gps can only do so much for me
I just bought mine yesterday and I love it. Theres a noticible speed difference between this and my tf101.
My wifi seems fine, not so sure about my gps because I havent tested it without wifi on, but with wifi it worked fine.
Im a college student and I use my tf in school, not for notes though, nothing will beat the feeling of pen on paper.
I use it for a planner in jorte calender to keep on top of my due dates.
I use it to capture pictures of powerpoint slides for professors that do not upload.
I use it on the bus there to play games, watch movies, watch cbt nuggets, study, or listen to music.
I use it as a second screen (gotta love the dock) for project writeups while I do forensics projects on computers in the computer lab.
I've also replaced my phone with google voice/skype - as I have a 4g hotspot .
Most importantly I use it to show the world how large my penis is by having a quadcore tablet.

GPS is the only common problem. All others are small numbers compared to whole of working devices. Just check out positive thread in my signature. The answer you seek is there. Don't get sucked into all this b.s. on the surface. Majority of prime owners happy with device n have no issues or hardly any. Decide for yourself. Look at both sides. Issues side tend to exaggerate n complain alot more. Not as many people have it as it may seem on surface. Plenty of polls hereto price that.

thanks, that was exactly what I needed. On paper it seems like a beast and in reviews it did amazing. But these forums kind of had me skeptical.
I bought many Prime after reviews online and testing one at the local store. But waiting for mine to be delivered I started finding threads about all these issues. Can honestly say I was scared I made the wrong choice.
However, no WiFi or GPS issues
Now - I have a ton of learning to do... this isn't quite what I was expecting and have a lot of setup to do to make use of this new toy.
I feel you. Yesterday I went around looking for them, and gamestop was the only place with them in stock. Their return policy is "once you open it, you're stuck with it". Nervously made the decision to buy it, handed over my 534 dollars. Opened it, perfect unit. Took the biggest sigh of relief.
i got this device a week ago, and everything works great for me. wifi is just fine
I don't have any shut off, random reboot or wifi problems with my prime, although the GPS doesn't work. The keyboard dock works extremely well (and is a handy backup battery). Personally I consider it a required feature for a tablet, which rather limits alternatives.
Although I am very happy with my prime, and it can do everything I require of it (which includes coding), it doesn't offer *quite* the performance I'd hoped for and if you don't feel you need a tablet I'd hold off for another generation. Tablet tech is good now but at the current rate of improvement this time next year it should be great.

Cnet Prizefight-Prime vs. Ipad 2

Hey Guys
Check out the recent Cnet prizefight between the Prime and the Ipad 2, what do you think of the reults? I love these prizefights, and this one was pretty good..actually a first for the Ipad 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdNS_VA5EfM
1) Lack of widescreen is an advantage...
2) "The OS we will be personal preference but we gave the win to iPad because we are dumb"
3) "Basically, the TFP has better camera/video/screen than the iPad but this round is a tie cause IDK why"
The iPad is a nice device but the points they bring up and compare are so dumb.
That b.s. Comparison..lol they gave ipa2 rounds where prime clearly outshined it. 4.4 to 4.5 my a+-..lol prime clearly won

exactly......
got to love that screen tear at 1:20
In "Value" they compare the 16GB version of the iPad 2 to the 32GB of the Prime, makes no sense.
They should compare apples to apples, the 32GB wifi of the Prime is $499 and the 32GB wifi of the iPad 2 is $619.
Yeah, I did not get how the Ipad 2 won when they mentioned that the prime had a better camera, multimedia etc...I believe that the Prime won this prizefight hands down...despite it's issues, I just love the smoothness, color display, speed and size of this tablet!
Also, most of the professional review sites that do these comparisons actually give the win to the Prime. Let's not forget, the original Ipad and the O.S. had its share of software issues also, but now its much better. This will be the same with ICS and Nvidia..once all the kinks are worked out, things will be MUCH better(GPS issues not counting)

What exactly happened with your device? Is it unusable at all right now? If you sent it in for RMA b4, send it back. If they can't get the issue right they will give you a new tablet. Just let them know how frustrated you are that you had to wait so long for first RMA only to get it back in worse condition. Plus there is a hardware fix/check the service centers will perform now to make sure your wifi antennae is connected properly or that the foil didn't shift. Needed supplies are being shipped to all service centers now.
Engadget also gave the Award to the Ipad even though the votes were so close.
I have both tablets and use the Prime 95% of the time. Notice that they did not even mention the front facing camera on the IPAD 2 that things is worthless (so is the rear facing one...lol).

Ehm... yeah... 'Transformer has the better (and wide)screen for videos, can give the full web experience (with flash), no need to recode videos and plays just about anything you throw at it. The camera is a lot better as well. So... it's a tie!'
Nuff said, ipad and transformer both are excellent tablets (simply depending on the type of user) but the point above makes sure I can't take anything said seriously anymore.
Funny thing is, I was playing with an iPad 2 the other day, and I didn't find it more intuitive in the slightest. In fact, I found it kind of confusing, particularly the multitouch gestures. I think ICS catches up with iOS, and provides more functionality to boot.
This whole "iOS is more intuitive" meme has got to go. It's no longer true in any meaningful sense, I think.
yeah this comparison is a joke. I'm embarrassed for CNET over this.

I have both, and while ICS is the best iteration of android so far...one of the reasons people say iOS is more intuitive is that everything for the user is laid out on the home screen without having to dig into various menus that a non tech user might find confusing.

Also going to .14 made it freeze put .15 on today seems to have fixed freeze. I know this update was not for wifi and bluetooth, GPS. Hahaha.. yup car accidents, people falling down stairs, cliffs, buildings, getting hit by cars. Cant send a message with the person next to you hearing it, hmmm cool concept but skeptical of it being a safe device to use..
looks awesome and as far as safety id imagine some kind of lockup while driving or maybe just reading messages out loud and keeping the screen clear.
the lack of privacy is also somewhat troubling. some kind of projected keyboard would be a great integration to help with having to say things out loud or being in a noisy place.
What this video fails to show us is the 5lbs battery backpack. Have battery, processing and wireless communications really progressed to the point where all of it can fit comfortably within the weight-limit of a pair of glasses? I am dubious.

looks awesome and as far as safety id imagine some kind of lockup while driving or maybe just reading messages out loud and keeping the screen clear.
the lack of privacy is also somewhat troubling. some kind of projected keyboard would be a great integration to help with having to say things out loud or being in a noisy place.

Yeah, and that's the other thing I forgot. Privacy.
Take that thing off when you're hanging out with me. It's none of Google/Facebook/The Govt's business where I am and who I'm with until the the government has a warrant for me. And it's NEVER Google/Facebook/OtherCorp's business.

Oh, right. This isn't really the future, just a bunch of commercial hucksterism so you can cough up money to support the excesses of a bunch of Suits.
Other than that, I'm all in favor of it.

What this video fails to show us is the 5lbs battery backpack. Have battery, processing and wireless communications really progressed to the point where all of it can fit comfortably within the weight-limit of a pair of glasses? I am dubious.

its actually not going to need a big battery. The screen its the biggest consumer on a device. Like 60% if your battery goes to your screen. These don't have a screen so it might be amazing on battery.

Privacy is the only thing I don't like about these glasses. People could be recording you and you would not even know it. It would suck also if someone hacked your glasses and watched you go every where.

Well they might make them with a speed limit, like anything above "normal" walking speed would shut the glasses off. (and above a certain excessive speed it turns back on, either to record you falling of a cliff or to be able to use as an airline passenger).
Why, oh, why can't people post in the right section? Unless Project Glass is going to be powered by a Transformer Prime in a back pack, then this should be in the...wait, it shouldn't be on XDA at all. This thing is a) not real, b) maybe won't run Android c) might not exist at all.
But then I guess with gas prices as high as they are we're probably all sitting at home being bored. *sigh* Continue misposting. No use arguing with the mob.
"one step closer to becoming a cyborg!!"

First thing we should do when this is realeased is download the terminator app, go back in time, and stop that evil fruity company from launching

but what if you were in the passenger seat? Its a good idea though. But it would be cool if it displayed your speed and directions.

With that thing strapped to your face for so long... I would be worried about screen burn on the cornea.

WOW - This place is D-E-A-D

Title says it all. Guess it's time to look for a new device (Tegra 4???) then unlock and root my Prime. I still love my Prime, always have, always will.
It's not as loud as it used to be for sure.
Check out the TF300, TF700 forums too because a lot of stuff that applies to that also works on TF201.

Just a series of posts by folks that needlessly brick their TPs.
Post something new and interesting? We've had like ten primedeath threads... Still a capable device. Wait till we have nvflash again!

Like I said, I love my Prime. I'm just a little worried that the Dev's have abandoned it. I've rooted many devices in the past but it seems the Prime is very susceptible to bricking and I really don't want to do that. I’ve never bricked and of my devices and I don’t want to start with my $500 tablet. This is why I haven't tried to root yet. I hope we get 4.2 and an exploit can be found se we can root without unlocking. I guess I'll eventually unlock but I'd like to root first and I'm too am waiting on nvflash.:good:

Ya, with two kids and a full time job I really have time to sit down and learn code. Some may have that kind of time, not me. My slate is full.
Thanks for your "help".

Guess that kinda stuff can't be helped, Asus did leave a bad taste in the mouths of tf201 owners... *sigh*
Well, at the moment I use my Prime only for Netflix. After getting Nexus 4 I have not used Prime for couch surfing because it is so laggy for web browsing. Just checking for news about 4.2 update from time to time.
If I ever again buy a mobile device from Asus, it will be 10" Transformer Nexus.

I love my Prime! What's to be bitter about? It's the thinnest 10 inch tablet ever made. I don't have my wifi modem 7 miles away from my device and I don't mount a tablet as a GPS device in my car (why would anyone), so every thing is nice!

First things first, I dont believe you care if devs abandon the prime or not since you have already stated that you are unwilling to unlock your prime because you are afraid that you dont have the skill not to break it. What you want is for somebody to post an apk to root your prime with no effort to learn on your part. This is all fine, to each his own.
One place you wont find the primes devs is here complaining in the general section of this forum because nothing productive happens here. Over in the development section of this forum you will find devs hard at work porting 4.2, getting Ubuntu running, and porting paranoid android etc. I am glad this section of the forum is dying because it means most of the complainers and trolls have left for browner pastures.
Do yourself a favor, unlock your prime and go check out the cool new stuff for the prime over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1414
Dead? Au contraire, I visit the forums on a daily basis, I just don't feel the need to write pointless posts or start hopeless threads.
People like OP are why devs will abandon a device

Except it's virtually unusable without an unlock and custom kernel/ROM flash. And no, voiding our warranty by unlocking is not a viable workaround for crappy internals and poor Asus coding.
Otherwise, battery life is poor, wifi is awful beyond about a room away (and I have a top of the line $170 Asus RT-N66U router) to the point that I can't even use it to stream video to my TV in the bedroom (my galaxy S3 picks up wifi at 90% speed in the same place, vs the Asus at 10%), and GPS is non-functional (dongle doesn't count). Don't get me wrong, it is a workable device, but it's far from a good one. Thinness does not make up for it's very real shortcomings.

No. Devs abandon a device when people stop using it and the manufacturer stops supporting it. I doubt anyone actually gets butthurt because random internet posters are complaining. And the TF201 had a small user base to begin with.

And, just check out the developer area. There are at least two brand new ROM's there (Androwook 2.0 and the latest Energy) released even while this "dead" discussion was going on. These new ROMs bring the prime up the the very latest Android Version. Does not seem dead at all to me.

Perhaps you got a better device than some of us. In any case, I'm happy you've had good luck with yours, but many of us have significant issues with ours, especially the early adopters. Unfortunately, there is no fix for any of the issues I've described with mine.
Does anyone else around here feel that if they had the devices people are talking negatively about, you'd be just fine? Am I alone?
