I can't do a search it says search is disabled. I'm currently on rooted stock and want to make a nandroid back up of my phone. I got the recovery app installed and currently booted to the recovery screen. I see the backup & restore tab, but then it goes to internal SD card and External SD card. Which one do I want to back up. I'm guessing internal SD card, and where does it save it too. Can I take the saved file and put it on my computer for safe keeping? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your using CWM recovery it will be under the folder Clockworkmod, then under the subfolder Backup or Backups. And it doesnt matter if you save on internal or external, of course you have to have enough space on which ever you select though. You can copy this folder to comp to keep it, if you decide to edit file name dont put any spaces in it use . or _ or you may run into issues.
Also, when it asks internal or external it's asking where you want to backup to. I usually choose external so I can format internal if needed.

Thanks guys for clearing it up. I appreciate it. I just flashed a rom, and didn't like it then flashed back to stock and restore via nandroid and it worked flawless. Thanks again for the help.
Nandroid Backup error message
I have a stock photon that I rooted. I have both CWM and Rom toolbox pro installed. When I go to to a Nandroid backup it trys to boot into recovery and says "FAILED to boot 2 Starting RSD mode". If I reset the battery it boots fine. Android Recovery does the same.... Suggestions?

i need a zip file or something to flash an original ROM ot start over...
im afraid i may have screwed up my phone for good. i have it booted up into recovery mode but i formatted the sd card before i backed it up.

You haven't screwed up your phone but you have lost your data if you haven't done a nandroid... Why do you format your SD BTW? It is not necessary unless you have Apps2SD... Also a nandroid doesen't save your SD card data it saves your custom ROM with all your mods to your SD... Your text is actually quite confusing... Have you lost your modified ROM or your SD card data? If it's your SD card data you might be able to find software on the internet for recovery of lost files...
just download a new rom;
go into recovery;
check 'usb toggle mode';
copy *.zip to your phone;
wipe all the things you need to wipe;
flash your *.zip
*after you've created a new BART or Nandroid backup of your working system,
copy the BART or Nandroid folder from your SD-card to your local pc so you always have a good backup by hand
**you have NOT bricked your phone so don't stress out
I was trying out a new ROM, so I did a nandroid and flashed. Unfortunately the flash wiped the internal SD. Can I get my Nandroid and my data back or is it a goner?
Its probably gone, but you can try and recover it. I've used a program called Recurva to recover pictures accidently deleted off my camera. You might be able to recover your nandroid, but don't get your hopes up.
I'm not sure any CW flashable ROM will delete either of your sd cards. Which one did you flash and how? If you have a nandroid image saved outside of the sd cards that just got deleted then you should have a folder labeled /sdcard which is your internal sd.

His language was ambiguous, but I think he meant he made a nandroid (backup) and flashed (with Odin).
Yeah, you can try a number of programs designed to restore data. Be very careful & make sure that clockwork is NOT set to ignore the hash check (I forget exactly what the option is). You don't want to flash it on top if it fails a hash check (unless you are only trying to restore data, which should be ok to try).
I should probably post this in the dev forum but I don't have enough posts. And I should probably search first but I'm in this panic mode of being cut off from having a phone so I'm terribly sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
I was running CM7.0.0.RC4 and decided to upgrade to CM7.0.3 and since all the other updates have gone so extremely well I decide to do this while in my car on a drive.
So first thing I did was Nandroid backup.
Then I wiped the cache and the davlik cache because that's been my recipe for success. Not thinking I also wiped the data/system stuff. Then I installed the CM7 update from a zip file.
I didn't realize what I did until I booted the thing and came up on a screen with none of my icons on it.
So I went into the reboot recovery screen and tried to do a Nandroid recovery but when I did that I just get the HTC screen staring back at me they pops up before anything else and it never seems to go anywhere else. I had to pull the battery to reboot it.
Am I doing the backup wrong? Does the Nandroid ISO have all my settings, programs, etc on it? If it doesn't I might as well do a fresh start.
When you do a Nandroid restore it should restore your data and system partitions as well (including your apps and settings).
When you do the restore, does it give you an error?

I didn't see an error so I just did another restore to check.
1 error message pops up and it says
"sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restor of /sd-ext"
When I reboot I get the same thing, it hangs on HTC screen and never goes beyond that.

This is normal if you don't have an ext partition on your SD card (for apps2sd or simple2ext support).

It's certainly strange. My suggestion is this:
1) Boot into Clockworkmod
2) Wipe data/factory reset
3) Wipe cache partition
4) Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
5) Partitions menu > format system
6) Install Cyanogenmod zip from sdcard
7) Install Google Apps zip from sdcard
8) Nandroid > Advanced restore > Restore data (don't restore the other things)
9) Reboot

I've done a install of the CM7 and teh google tools and it started downloading all the apps that I had stored on the SD card so the only think I think I lost was some settings and my text messages but I'll try that anyway just to see if it will work. I have all my settings just the way I want them.
So I tried that and it didn't seem to do any better. None of my text messages were saved. I had to redownload all my apps again.
Now my SD card is almost full which doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless somehow the old versions of the programs are still on the SD card in which case if they are how to I clear that space up?
The other thing is while reinstalling some of the apps failed and I cleared the notification list because it was too long to sort through them all but now I can't figure out which apps weren't installed correctly. Can I bring up that error list again?

When you make Nandroid backups, it saves everything on your SD card under the clockworkmod folder. Each backup is saved by the date (GMT) when you did the backup. On a smaller SD card (like the one the phone comes with) even a few of those backups can eat up your SD card space quickly, so you should just go in and delete the ones you don't need from that folder.
When you did the Nandroid backup and Nandroid restore, did you go into ROM Manager to get to Clockworkmod? If so, you should try doing it the proper way -- turn the phone off completely, then use volume down + power to get to Clockworkmod. In general I would avoid using ROM Manager on an S-ON device like the Aria.
Also make sure the USB cable is not plugged in. it makes clockwork act crazy.

I've been doing the restore from the Clockwordmod bootloader menu. Turns out I made a backup of ADW settings and the desktop settings so I'm right back to where I was before the install just in a more round about way.
I am using the SD card that came with it but I'm thinking I might go get a larger one now. Is there any easy way to get all my apps onto the new card? Will just coping the content work?

If your current SD card doesn't have an ext partition on it (i.e., you didn't repartition it), then you can simply copy the entire contents over from the old card to the new card. It's as simple as that.
Never had this issue before in the past 4 year I've used Clockworkmod but basically I have my backup folder on my external SD and whenever I try to restore a backup via the backup and restore menu in recovery I get an error saying there are none to be found.
Been googling for the past hour with no luck and it's now 3:05am and I'm just about ready to launch my device out the window.
Any help is appreciated.

If we're assuming the SD card is functioning properly and in the correct format that CWM supports, then either your version of CWM doesn't support restoring from external, you have to manually choose restore from the external, or the naming structure is messed up. Have you just tried moving it to internal just long enough to see if the backup is working and then move it back?
I just tried to upgrade from Alliance build 26 to build 30. I also loaded TWRP and used that to load update to build 30 since trying to load build 30 with CWM kept resulting in an abort with error 7. Now I am stuck at either simply booting into TWRP or to Droid logo to use Odin. I have have no useable file to recover to since all my backup files are CWM and I find out now they are useless in TWRP. Can I bypass TWRP and get back into CWM or am I screwed and need to start all over with Adam's thread to use Odin and stock files?Will I lose my saved CWM files entirely now on the phone itself? I need help please!

Here's a few options off the top of my head to get you up and running again.....
1. You can use Odin to flash CWM recovery back to your phone, then (if you saved the CWM backup to your external sd card prior to flashing TWRP)... you could just restore that backup from the external sd card. If you saved your CWM backups to internal memory, they are probably deleted because I'm assuming you wiped when trying to install Alliance 30.
2. You can mount TWRP in USB mode, then transfer a recovery flashable CWM zip over to your external sd from the computer, and then flash CWM back to your phone and restore your CWM backup.
3. If you have an external sd card adapter for the computer... then you can remove the external sd card from the phone and mount it in the computer to transfer over a CWM recovery flashable zip and your backup files (assuming that you saved a backup in the computer). Put the sd card back into the phone.... then use TWRP to reinstall CWM.... then use CWM you restore one of your backups.
4. If you keep encountering booting problems and none of those ideas work... it would probably be best to just use ODIN to restore back to stock 4.1.2... then start from scratch by re-rooting the with Casual.

Thank you for responding with such detail. It finally started to boot into Alliance logo but never completed. Now it says with yellow triangle phone needs to be returned to Verizon. It does not even work in Odin. I do have an external reader for the card but I guess I am screwed now anyway.I wonder if Verizon will even help me at all back to stock.
