Xperia S feedback - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Got it!
So:
1. Nice surprise. Leather carry pouch and screen protector
included.
2. Looks great and it's well built. Feels less plasticky than
Arc. Back covers is removable in a great way.
3. Screen is great too, just so much more refined than -
already great - Arc.
4. New widgets are nice, however they removed the batt
indicator from the tools widget.
So you don't know the batt percentage uless you go to
settings, or I just can't find it.
5. The capactive buttons: basically I like physical ones so
it's already a step back.
But they are ok, they just need a certain amount of
pressure. What is actually good! Because there is no way
you can press them accidentally.
They are definitely working well, more like hardware ones.
6. Internal memory - still visible as separate - is around 1,8
MB.
Whole available RAM is around 620 MB, so now about
370MB free.
7. Ui looks great, more matt than glossy on Arc. There is
quickdial.
8. Camera is fast, the UI still good but I'm just used to Arc.
But it's still ergonomic.
I have to still test things like calling, internet and photo.
Don't have that much of a free time now.
Oh and one more thing, this one pisses me of or I can't
get it:
After calendar sync I see only events back in Feb.
Everything older is not present. What is a problem since I
have events back in May 2011 which I need.

Call quality is very good I'd say. Loud and clear.
BTW, Calendar app is better with comfortable preview of any day still seeing whole month.
Email pretty much the same but looks great.
Office preinstalled, viewer only though.
Preinstalled apps are uninstallable: McAfee Security, PlayNow, Energy Save, Wisepilot.

In some countries you can uninstall McAfee and Wisepilot. You have always been able to uninstall them in Belgium (and usually on the Dutch versions too).

Just wait for root (if you don't want to unlock bootloader) and then it won't be a problem.

If I wipe off the whole Calendar and perform sync, everything will be synced = lost forever, cleaned from Google.

Sure, deleting the WHOLE account won't delete stuff from Google.
Naa, it doesn't look like an error but "planned" behaviour.
Deleting the whole account won't change anything. As I mentioned, the same **** on X10 mini.....

Music is very good from Headset and speakers. Which are nice, of course not bassy (that's impossible) but very clear.

Video tomorrow since it's quite dark now.
I made test video though, in difficult light, and it's very clear still but doesn't focus when very close to the object (suppose it's normal). Sound is very good.
I made one night shot, and it has a great detail but also a little noise on some dark parts when zooming in. But the quality is good too.
I don't know what do you want me to try with front facing camera.

ola folks,
just ordered mine, for change ov my htc evo3d can t wait to have it

got mine today and the first impression is really good.. more imputs coming

Yeah, a great phone.
No problems whatsoever.

Absolutely fantastic stuff guys cannot wait to get mine please please please let it be by the end of this week, I cannot take the pain of waiting any more.

Flash Light performance doesn't seem to be really different than Arc, I must test more though.

No, I dont mean delete events from calendar, because then you would loose content. What I mean is, go to settings, applications, manage applications, filter all, find calendar and clear data. This won't delete content on your account, it just reset calendar to default settings kind of thing. Then you can re-sync and you will get your content downloaded again. Create new calendar online (just for test) with two events. One now, one more than a month back and sync only that calendar and test it if you are not sure

Thanks! Of this I am not so sure though if deleting Calendar data would not complicate things more.
BTW Picasa Album got stuck and doesn't sync.
And all the changes I do on my previous Xperia Arc, are reflected on S once synced. So it looks like it meant to be this way as Xperia X10 mini does the same... Just don't know how to change this crap!

I would be really interested to hear how people are finding the audio output on the xps. I've been waiting a while to replace my Samsung galaxy s2 and the audio quality was my biggest gripe with that phone. Anyone tried hooking this up too some decent hifi or headphones yet? I'm really hoping this is going to be more pleasing to the ear!

Anyway I honestly rarely complain about sound quality just because it's usually quite good.
I didn't have enough time to heck it properly but for the qick checkout:
Xperia S seems more smooth than Arc, more "round". I find it sounding very good.

JustPictures - best photo viewing app on android?

just tried it
that whole concept sony was working on - tapping and sliding up the finger to zoom into a pic is already enabled on this app
thumbnails load so much faster than mediascaped..and once cache is made..its fastt
thumbnails are also big..and scrolling is so smooth.
swiping to change pics is so much more responsive.
finally i can delete the mediascape from the home screen..and enjoy taking pics on my phone.
I feel you must miss something....
have you tried those custom rom around?
actually our 2.1 came with stock gallery but sony just hid, which still far better than just pic.
search market for enable gallery, it's small tool to unhide it.
The stock gallery is good, although I think JP is a good bit better... You can do full res zoom, which is great to check if your pics came out good when you take them
Main problems with JP are:
1. Too frequent updates.
2. Full res zoom does not work any more...
However, given the frequency of updates, I'm sure they'll fix that soon enough...
I love justpics

Agreed, frequent updates shows a developer who cares, but too frequent shows a sloppy developer (IMO)...
Also uses up precious data.
nonetheless, JP still rocks.

once you ignored the folders, JP will keep it ignored!
you can just upgrade a newer version over the older ones...

Thanks for using JP!

I'm the developer of JP. Thanks for the good comments
The fact that settings such as authentication, passwords and excluded folders are lost after clearing the cache is actually a bug... Just fixed it now, and it will be in next release.
It is true that I make frequent updates to the app, but I believe I always add a little something in it to make it worse upgrading. I also try to fix bugs that are discovered... I strongly feel like the overall quality of JP has improved a lot overtime, in the way that I introduce less bugs when I release. This is due to the comments and feedback I receive on the beta channel !
Developing such an application is a real commitment for a single developer. Every feature that is added is hours of work, and hours of sleep time gone away Beta tester can verify I work on it a lot on week ends

My favorite picture viewer is Android Comic Viewer (ACV) - Best part is it works with zip file so you can zip hundreds of pics into a single zip file and viewed with ACV. easily zoom in / out, bookmark of last view pic, very fast etc ... no thumbnail though
If you have thousands of pics, it's a pain to wait for gallery to create the thumbnails.

[Q] Pixelated caller picture on stock phone.apk?

Hi guys,
No matter what I do, the pictures of my contacts remain not only small, but also pixelated beyond recognition. I know there are replacement apps, such as UCS and BIG!, but isn't there anything I can do in order to get decent caller photos in the stock Phone app?
Thanks!

Its not you at all. I have had the same issue with several Android devices. Some had painful work arounds. I have seen this talked about numerous times for the RAZR and it is always the same. Use a different app or you will have crappy pics.
Its the same problem anyone with an android phone runs into.
When u sync your contacts with your Gmail/Google account the pics are reduced for the icon it uses online, and then resynced over your phones pics.
Absolutely the stupidest problem which should have been taken care of a long time ago.
either way u need to turn off the syncing. And then manually fix your pics. Or go the Facebook approach as mentioned.
Either way u need to turn off the sync or it will happen again

Easy fix. Take a pic of every person in your contact list and then assign them to the contacts. There is the answer as well as many others. This is not new to android. HTC seems to be able to produce a better image for some reason when synced w Google but still an overall android issue. Been like that since the DROID Eris.

Whats your impression of the Backup feature in WP8?

As originally described, I thought it was hoaky. But watching it in action a couple of times, I like it. I do see that when installing the apps, I always seem to get several apps that need attention, and won't resolved.
But, text messages are saved, Themes are saved, but NOT screen layout. Login for accounts are pushed with a prompt.
Takes most, not all, of the pain of a hard reset away.
For me is useless.
It just copy the list of the installed apps WITHOUT the data!
It does not save the start screen..
Conclusion, if you hard reset the phone you can just restore the list of apps some configurations and SMS..
I was waiting for the same iCloud backup

I think it's useless as well. If you're using an unlocked phone it doesn't work at all. You can't go through the setup properly because you have no data until you input your APN. Once you do, you have no chance to restore from backup.
i didn't think much about it until i switched my black 920 for a white one, and man was it nice having it download my apps and input all my settings for me. it's still a little buggy (with the apps that require attention and the lack of the start screen layout being saved) but it's a pretty handy feature imo.

I think the apps that require attention are the preinstalled Nokia apps needing update. As long as I know what they are, I'm good.
It installed 79 apps for me, (except for Nokia Exclusives, Qty.4), I had to enter email passwords, and my setting were all restored. Compaired to what we had to do before had Im happy. I imagine it will get better too. As for app & game date backup I have a few games and apps that offer them via the app.

Jellybean High Resolution contact icons DO NOT SYNC properly

Last night once we got the JB update, I took the liberty of going to each one of my of my contacts facebook, saving a high res picture of them and then adding it to their contact profile in my phone from the SD card. I'm that guy that has to have good looking pictures for everyone when they call.
With ICS we got a bump in contact icon size. However when you switch roms and your contacts get sync'd to the new rom, their icons are blurry and low res like hell. This was supposedly fixed in Jellybean. So as I stated above I took the time (almost 3 hours actually) to update some 200 contacts.
I just want to let you guys know, don't waste your time, it's not fixed rofl. Googles contact sync feature still completely decimates high res pictures into 3x3 pixelated bogus.
That is all. -___-
All of mine are high res....just dont be in a hurry to sync everything or they will look like crap...Ive tested this with several installs...set up your google contacts when you first boot, nothing else...give the rom time to settle, especially let the sync icon stop..do your google play, whatever while you wait....then setup facebook with "existing contacts"...give it a bit to run and you should have high res contatcs..

I did exactly that when I discovered they didn't sync in high resolution. I did a factory format and started over and they still synced in low res quality.
Thats odd, cause Im sitting here looking at mine and there is a huge difference from ICS....Last night when I only set up Google then played around for awhile I noticed how great they looked...today when I reinstalled and rushed through the setup they looked horrible...reinstalled again and took my time and they look great again....

If you want proper hi-res contact photos, use a real JB ROM like CyanogenMod or an AOSP ROM. Contact photos will always be hi-res once you update the photo to a hi-res one.

How they look after re-adding the photo after sycing is 100% finished
See what I'm saying? It's doing butchering the contact icons. I'm not sure how you're getting them to sync properly but I've added the pics from the contact app and also at google.com/contacts @[email protected]

While Facebook sync is a great option for people who aren't picky about their contact icons, a lot of my friends have pictures of them kissing their girlfriends, or blowing out clouds of smoke or have profile pictures that aren't even them. I'm just confused to why google has said this is fixed, when it is not. I've done a factory wipe multiple times now and cannot get the high resolution pictures to stay high res once synced. Only way to do it is to manually set the picture phone side, and not google side.
If I back up my contacts through Titanium Back up with the high resolution icons, that theoretically would preserve everything, correct?

[Q] Gallery app very slow - how to unsync picasa/facebook galleries?

So, my gallery app is so slow that it is almost unusable. If I open it, I get a bunch of blank boxes that take forever to populate. I think it has something to do with me checking 'sync picasa', 'sync facebook', etc. options when I setup the phone. Can somebody tell me how to unsync these galleries? I went to the Facebook account settings and unchecked sync pictures, but I still have a bunch of albums and it's crazy slow.
Any ideas?

After waiting a while, and they have the picasa and facebook icons. So it's still pulling my galleries off the web, even though it is no longer synced. I also wiped the gallery app data, and they are still there. I think that is why the app is so freaking slow for me.
you could try uninstalling facebook and try running a 3rd party facebook app. I personally can't stand the stock facebook app for crap like this and the way its always running.
as far as picasa, if you use it, i'm not sure what else could be done. if you dont't use it, you can remove a lot of its functions via the pc. and that would clear that up.
I have a tip for you OP.
Turn off Wifi then try using your Gallery.
Not really a solution for the stock gallery but I've used Quickpic for as long as I can remember and it's always fast, reliable, and no sync issues to deal with. Currently I use that for normal picture management and use the stock gallery in the rare instance I need Picasa or Facebook photos synced.
Yeah I have found I have this issue if I am connected to wifi at my house.. I know the reason too. Looks like the phone is trying to connect to my networks dlna server (plex) which for whatever reason it is unable to do.. I just removed allshare and the problem is gone.. you can either rename the three or so files in your app dir (if you have root) or you can install a ROM as most of them give you an option to not install allshare.

I just removed allshare and the problem is gone.. you can either rename the three or so files in your app dir (if you have root) or you can install a ROM as most of them give you an option to not install allshare.

Yep I was just under the assumption that the OP is on stock firmware.
