Hey guys,
So I got tired of muddling through the Splashtop THD threads and figured I could make a new one specific to what I'm wondering without hijacking someone else's thread.
I want/need to remote login to my computer regularly when I'm outside of the house. The bundled Splashtop app doesn't seem to work and just shows a black screen that doesn't ever update when I login or type or anything. It just stays black and the screen refresh rate is essentially 0, regardless of my remote connection. (My home connection is 20 down, 5 up).
Even on PocketCloud, I get a similar thing where it doesn't really log in to the computer and kinda freezes on the screen that presents before it shows the desktop. I've used logmein via the browser when I absolutely needed something done remotely and it's a big pain in the butt.
Here's my question: for TRUE remote login (outside of the house), what solutions do you guys use? I've heard the Splashtop HD app is actually quite good (and better than the bundled one). I've also read that it is more targeted for desktop use than the THD version, which is supposed to be for gaming. Lastly, how do these two compare to logmein? In my experience, Logmein has always been reliable via a browser on a computer, but I haven't ever tried their android app for iOS or android.

bundled one i believe is HD, i have splashtop standard as well. The bundled one works flawlessly for me. i have used a few other remote login apps before. so far splashtop is the only one that would allow me to stream videos from my pc, and watch it on my prime.
I'm thinking about getting the THD version as well, if it's optimized for tegra 4 and has even better multimedia streaming performance.
also did you install splashtop streamer on your pc? as it's required in order for splash top to access your desktop. if remote within your network locally still doesn't pick up then, try to sync using your gmail.

I've not used logmein, but I have used both the bundled Splashtop and HD. From home, where I have similar connection speeds as you, Splashtop HD works great but does have some random disconnect issues.
My problem with Splashtop is when i try to use it over 3G or slower wifi connection - it becomes completely useless. It will connect but responsiveness is nil.
That's when i switch over to Teamviewer. Teamviewer works GREAT over even slower 3G speeds. The only thing I don't like about Teamviewer is the way you move the pointer - kindof a virtual mouse type thing that takes some getting used to. I prefer the touch-to-click method of Splashtop but, again, it just does not stand up to Teamviewer as far as connection and performance goes.
Incidentally, teamviewer can connect pc-to-pc as well so I have all of my family's (and extended family's) computer's linked to my account so when the wife is having issues at home, I can simply remote in from the office or wherever and fix her up. It's a great program and it's FREE for personal use.

yeah, i forgot to include this. i tried teamviewer too a couple months ago, but I didn't like the UI. Seemed like it was a pain to move around and stuff.

I also use Teamviewer, it is especially good for phone becuase of the mouse movement control but I wish they had a tablet optimized version. The PC to PC is great with teamviewer I actually gave my mom a usb with a portable teamviewer program so I can provide tech support on the go to any computer with internet. But as far as the THD vs HD(Bundle) go I would like to have more feedback but I read somewhere that the main improvement is the controller acceptance and full screen support....if you plan on gaming through remote connection at all then go THD no doubt but other than that I am not sure...streaming video probably would benefit from it but I am not sure. And as far as LogMeIn goes, any $30app better be perfect as far as I am concerned( I am not sure of the actual app much beyond price though, it might be great) and the $7 THD would probably be just as good...and the free HD is great already so just sleep on it and chooce one...

depending on what you need to do with your computer outside your house,
i think your best bet is to set your computer up with VNC that way it goes from your tablet to your computer instead of through some other company's server and such
personally i think thats more secure
LogMeIn can WOL. If Splashtop could do that, I'd give it the win for sure.
2X Client
I tried Splashtop (Bundled) but it didn't allowed me to copy something from my TF clipboard (Text not files) to the computer, so I've been using "2X Client", which uses the Windows Native RDP protocol. Is not great for multimedia, but it doesn't require any additional software to be installed on your target PC and let me copy text from my ICS browser for example to FireFox in the computer.
If I need to connect to a different computer at my house, I just remotely log into my router and change the port forward to a different computer.
I like to use phonemypc since i paid $10 for it a couple years back. that said the bundled splashtop is a tad bit faster but disconnects for a second every few minutes. i still havent found one that streams video well even at home. i've yet to try the splashtop thd, though.

Yeap, 2X Client is free, you can find it on the Play Store here. But remember, I don't think it will work very well for Multimedia or Gaming
So just as an update to this thread, I downloaded and installed 2x and am still trying to figure out how to configure it for use outside of my wifi network. Pointers would be appreciated!
As for Splashtop THD, I bought it an hour ago, but I returned it because I still have the same issue. When I try to login, I get an unresponsive black screen with 3 scattered "login" boxes at times, but just now I tried again and just got a black screen!
I'm starting to think it may be a connection issue, but I have a 20d/5u connection at home with a strong wifi connection (802.11n, great throughput)
Has anyone seen this issue before with splashtop?

Make sure all the correct port ranges are forwarded. Won't work correctly if not.

you have to be logged into your machine when splashtop connects. if your pc turns off display, sleeps, logs off, or is configured for multi-user it will not work. The streamer app should prevent the pc from sleeping. what operating system are you using on your desktop? you can test splashtop with the built-in version of mynet.
as for 2x remote for it to work outside your wifi you need to port forward tcp 3389 to your desktop ip address in your internet router. then you would configure 2x remote to connect to your internet ip.
Is the bundled one called something different. Im not seen it on mine.

RealVNC has been flawless for me. Works real smooth on the prime. I use it a lot at work to bounce back and forth between my desktop and tablet when in meetings and such. You get mouse capability as well.
However a lot of people have been using Wyse pocket cloud pro with great sucess as well when outside the office. They could only get the paid version to work though.
Both are available on the "Google Play" market.

I use Splashtop THD on my TFP and i love it i also use the HD version on phone and tablet from time to time as there are some things i like the HD version for as it offers a few mouse pointer eases and i don't always wanna use my finger as the mouse and prefer a more precise mouse pointer. as far as connection i haven't had any issues while connected to my wireless network. the 3g connection however is greatly dependent on the speed of said network so sometimes its awesome if i have 1m speed+ and little unresponsive or disconnects with lower speeds. the functionality however is just wonderful and meets all my needs eventually i will get the dock so that i can start gaming on it as its very difficult without. i also have streamed some of my 1080p movies i have on my computer and the fps is great sometimes there is a slight stutter but nothing that makes it a bad watch
have you attempted to set this connection up through a vpn?

really it is just windows mobile remote desktop but there is absolutely zero lag except for when i play games or 1080p videos... simply amazing what tech can do now a days.

let me just say, that this, my friends, is the future of mobile computing.
1) handheld device with a Rx rate that is > 10Mbit/sec
2) desktop computer with a Tx rate that is > 10Mbit/sec
3) software (or even hardware acceleration) that is capable of rendering the complete desktop experience and Tx via internet
although, just a simple HD video stream of the server-side and an ultra fast Tx/Rx of input commands from the client to the server would work just as well and probably be easier to do. remote desktop mobile is great, but it can be so much simpler to provide the robust experience of the desktop computing environment.
why try and shrink everything to fit in such small devices? worry about thermal issues, ie no active cooling in a pda phone? just make it good enough to send and recieve data fast enough that there is no noticable lag (a human can't react to something that fast - check it http://biae.clemson.edu/bpc/bp/Lab/110/reaction.html)... so really, all you need is a connection between the two devices with a ping anywhere between 0ms and 190ms and there will be no noticable difference to the user (visually no lag @ 190ms, audiologists say our reaction time to sound is about 160ms).
i am just floored with this notion. if this doesn't become the standard in the years to come, i will seriously be surprised. the only thing limiting us right now is bandwidth, as my own testing of this has shown that any lag is not even close to noticable (esp since the ping to my comp via EVDO was less than 20ms) on the connections we already have. just a bit more throughput and this technology will be perfect.
the beauty of this type of computing is that the mobile device is not bound by the processor or video card or anything else, save the uplink and downlink speed for the internet (and driving the units display too); and, of course, the program on the "server"/desktop that renders and Tx the data...
anyone else ready for the future?
some might say "oh, well that's too small for me... i'll take my lappy or desktop over that any day..." screens are small now - but what about when flexable LCD/OLED screens become mainstream? you could fold up a device in your pocket and unravel it to a 22" monitor... or how about this, google picoprojector - cabable of displaying 1080p images, decent lumen output (not that bright, but the thing is the size of a zippo lighter), nice contrast ratio, DLP... that could be incorporated into the device - some new business phones in japan already have a pico-dlp projector built in.
i can't tell you how many times ive just wanted to use my gaming rig, work on photoshop, or do some 3D editing but ive been stuck somewhere without my monster rig - or on a long flight but my lappy is no powerhouse (7150m gfx just doesn't cut it)...
and what about that, what if the connection speeds (and also rendering speed of the stream too) was fast enough were i could just throw it on a "dummy" laptop (kinda like the redfly?) that has nothing more than a high-res display, CDMA 4G (which is just as fast as gigabit lan), keyboard, and wifi - this machine would act EXACTLY as your desktop, except you can take it with you anywhere there is a cell phone signal or wifi signal...
man, when 4G hits the USA, things are going to really open up... literally, the flood gates will be pulled back then - can you imagine? gigabit networking over a cell network??!! downloading a full DVD-5 in just under 5 minutes!!?

I've been doing that a lot on the run, especially when one of the servers or the nodes gone haywire.
I have to say, a VGA screen is better than the QVGA.
Now, time to pull some prank that I can run OS X on this thing
no static IP, unfortunately verizon fios does not hand them out to residential users; alas, it is dynamic... however, fios only renews the IP every so often - not sure if it is every hour, day, or week - but for the solid 3 or 4 hours i played around with my desktop via my touch pro today, the IP stayed the same.
really, all i wanted to do was wake on my PVR via the magical buzz from the lan - which causes my comp to either boot into mythbuntu or vista configed to load up sagetv, siggraph, and a firewirestb controller automatically. sagetv works beautifully like this - not only can i placeshift and watch the tube (i have sling too, but it doesn't allow for pvr) but i can have my pvr(computer) turned off and be like "oh crap, i forgot to turn on the pvr to record the penn state game... no problem, i'll just log in remotely, which will wake on lan, and then go right into sagetv and start recording...
i mean, the possibilities are endless with this - i love it. at work and need to pull a large file off your computer? no problem, you have your desktop in the palm of your hand. the other cool part about wm6.1 rdp is that it can map your phone as a drive, making file transfers flawless and as fast as your storage card can take them, essentially.

haha, i had some of my friends going that this phone had vista on it - in all honesty, noone but the tech savvy would be able to know that a pda couldn't run it.
although, windows 7 has a stripped kernal that only needs 512Mb of ram - our pda phones are ALMOST able to keep up with that... and just wait for the Via Nano, Intel Atom, Nvidia Tegra, or AMD's offering to show up in a phone.... even better, a pda phone with a UMD drive on it (psp + desktop pc power + small form factor = total convergence device).

For dynamic IPs you should try DynDNS. Its a free service that allows you to point a url at your IP, comes with a nifty little service to update the url IP mapping automatically. Works great, but I had to setup port forwarding fro RDP since my compy is behind a wifi router. I am able to access my compy remotely with great ease. and looks beautiful on the 640x480 screen!
Are you using WM6RDP.cab? If you are, have you figured out a way to zoom in to areas of the desktop?
good look on that program, will make things much easier for me! esp if verizon decies to switch the ip on me when i can't be near the comp to figure it out...
this is the wm6.1 rom, i think the zoom function was stripped from it - at least that is what i read. although, i believe that the 6.0 version still has zoom enabled, but i am not 100 percent positive about that... honestly, the vga screen makes it really nice to look at and i didn't have too much of a problem reading anything - but zoom would be a welcome feature.
give the 6.0 version out and if it does have zoom enabled and the speed is up there with this version let me know, cause i would like to have as many features for this as possible... doesn't make much sense to remove a zooming option to me :/
I just installed zaDesktop and it's perfect! I can choose what size I want the session to be, then it will have scroll bars. I can also zoom in and out while in the session and exit full screen mode easily.

Im a complete noob to this remote desktop thing. How do you set it up?
is there anything u need to setup on the computer before it will connect? i have my computer (vista 64bit ultimate) accepting all remote desktop connections... but when i try to connect using zdesktop thru my ip (and even when i use my DNS IP redirect!) i get an error message saying "An error message cannot be displayed because an optional resource assembly containing it cannot be found" any ideas?

By the way - I seem to remember MS Remote Desktop not working on certain versions of Vista.
does logmein cost money? all i saw was a 1 month trial and u have to pay a subscription for each computer... =/
zaDesktop works, but the seperate mouse control is extremely annoying. There has to be someone who can hack the standard remote desktop client and extend the screen size to 1024x768 or better. One of our developers here did a similar thing to the desktop version when it didn't support resolutions above 1600x1200. They just hacked the binary directly searching for that resolution in binary and substituting a higher resolution. Worked like a charm.

So I got my Vibrant tethered to my Mac thanks so the DIY posted by siirial. No root needed! (Even though I'm rooted.) Major props.
Anyway, my apartment complex doesn't allow online gaming, so I decided to try to use tethering to get around it. (Stickin' it to the man! Sort of.)
So I'm writing this from my tethered connection;
1. I've allowed internet sharing on my Mac. [Sharing my connection from SAMSUNG_Android to computers using ethernet.]s
2. I've plugged in an ethernet cable from my PS3 to my Mac.
And that's where all the excitement ends.
Does anyone know how I can make this work? Is there something I need to enable on the Vibrant?

If you had root, you could install the wireless tether hack found in the debelopment section. Forget running it through the mac. Itll act as its own wifi hotspot. Just connect the ps3 up to that. It uses wpa encryption and the security code is randomly generated every time you enable it.

think you would have to go the mobilAP route. search out that thread and flash this app
Edit: it seems that it defaults to a NAT-3 and will limit functionally. There may be a way to get around that but I cannot find as of yet, hopefully someone will figure this out. It seems a bit sluggish to start but connects to playstation network and will display friends online, the network store and also allows me to view messageshowever when I started gta it boots me out once the multiplayer game begins
I think you would have to go the mobilAP route. search out that thread and flash this app.
im not real sure on mac but i use my vibrant to tether my ps3 and play call of duty mw2 perfectly fine on my windows comp. a little laggy sometimes but still very playable. all i did was tether it to my comp, enable internet sharing, then connected my ps3 to my comp, then setup the internet connection for wired on the ps3. works like a charm.
never tried with a ps3, but the Wireless AP app works flawless, it is built-into the Eugene roms. I have tethered 4 laptops on it before playing a lan game of CS:S on our drive to Cali. Freaking awesome, my phone the AP created a lan game and bam instant in-car gaming haha.
I don't see why the ps3 wouldn't see the android AP and be able to connect, I will try when i get home in a few min

Well let me know how you get past the Nat-3 issue that will boot me out of a multiplayer game of gta4 without using a laptop as a pass thru. I tried every setting combo I could and still get booted. It says right on the network settings page on the ps3 that Nat-3 is limiting functionality and seems to fail once you connect and attempt to use headset for online play.
yeah no dice on the wireless AP. the ps3 doesnt even see it

I'm confused.
I went through the trouble of phone using PDANet to laptop to PS3 through ethernet--major pain. I was looking through the development section and saw the MobileAP mod. Seriously, it's the easiest thing to use ever, but does require root. Works flawlessly so far and is super easy to set up. I tried to put the link, but can't because I'm new apparently. It's usually near the top on the first page in the dev section...

but your in nat 3 which limits functionality, unless your are running different or manual and specific settings... care to share your methods? if you read above a few posts im connecting but in nat 3 it only allows some functions

not that they do it on purpose most likely, but most apartment complexes run 1.0 mbps or slower to keep computers from hogging bandwidth. Which in turn makes it nearly impossible to play any online games, most 3G speeds are at 1.5 or 2.5 depending where you are.
Just started a new job where others are using ipads to access their desktops via a citrix server. (Big bank, there will be no asking the admins to allow me to change anything for me). Thus far I have really only seen outlook, which appears to work pretty well, but I am wondering if the horsepower of the prime will make any difference with Citrix based apps? Or is network speed more important?
I also work for a big bank and use Citrix on my Xoom (Tegra 2) and it works very well. I can only imagine it will be better performance on the Prime.
With citrix it does not really matter what the speed of the device is(1000 mhz & > is fine). It is more dependent on the network speed and the power of your citrix server. The client is only used to access the xendesktop\xenapp and the citrix server & network does the rest of the work.
I tried out Citrix receiver on my Prime today. It's not great. Not because the Prime but because of the Citrix App. The cursor doesn't follow your finger press so basically you have to use your finger to move the arrow cursor some distance away. It also froze up several times but that may be due to the WiFi issues I seem to have on the Prime.
It's functional but not great. I'm going to install Splashtop on my work PC on Friday to see if that works better - at least on the LAN.

This is the answer. I, too, use the Xoom for Citrix.
I can connect using internet discovery but that's really all I can do. Once I'm on my home computer it freezes up after the first click. I can't do anything. This is the problem.
I have two desktops (Windows 7 64bit) at home and that same thing happens on both.
Running the remote desktop on my home network is great. Very fast and responsive.
I have Kaspersky Internet Security running but I don't think that's the problem since I closed that down and the issue remained.
My video card is EVGA GeForce GT440 is that matters.
Any idea what the problem could be? Anyone else have this?
I tired e-mailing Splashtop support but I haven't received a response in a few days. Really want to get this fixed.

What sort of internet connection are you accessing it from? Is it a tethered phone connection, public wifi, are you behind a corporate firewall?
What exactly do you mean by it freezing, is it the prime freezing up or just the desktop image it is showing you? It sounds like it might be an issue with the internet connection and/or your router to me.

I use this mostly from my girlfriend's place using just a basic home set-up, the internet over wi-fi. But I've tried it from my home using the wifi-hotspot on my phone to test it out. Same problem.
It's not the tablet freezing up, can use that like normal. It's the desktop image, I can't even open a program on it.
yea, I got the same problem it started happening after the .21 update. I've email splashtop about it, but they have not recognized it yet.
So plz also email splashtop [email protected] and include the servers log file located here:
C:\Program Files\Splashtop\Splashtop Remote\Server\SPlog.txt
I'm hoping they'll fix it soon.
Btw. it splashtop using 2 pc's is still working fine remotely.
Have you been using remote desktop to the computer at the same time as Splashtop THD?. If so, reboot the computer. I believe when you miniseries the remote desktop window, Splash top only sees the blank screen of a minimized RDP window.

When I say remote desktop I'm referring to Splashtop remote. Not using the Windows version at the same time.
Splashtop support and I have sent a few messages back and forth. I'll update if any progress is made.
I'm currently on an offshore oil rig, with limited Internet access, I just wondered of there was anyway I could set up my macbook in my bedroom and have a wifi direct connection between them (with NO external Internet connection) so I could stream movies from it?
Any ideas?

Have you heard of PLEX media server?
It sounds perfect for you.
What you will need is to make your tablet a wireless AP, aka hotspot, so your macbook can recognise that you're on the same network.

Yes, I use plex at home. I never realized that I could use it like that.
So make my tablet a wireless access point, connect the Mac to it, and I should be able to stream via plex?

Yes, that's the theory anyway.
If I were in your situation, that would be the first thing to come to mind.
Wifi bandwidth should be enough so it does not bottleneck, provided you're not on early versions of wifi, like a or b... even G should be sufficient.
I just attempted this at home... and since you're in the Nexus 9 forums... I'm assuming you have one... There is no option for wifi hotspot, unless you have the LTE variant, which isn't out yet...
Another option is to get a wireless AP device, like a router... plug in with ethernet to the macbook, and have your tablet wifi connect to it, that way, you're still on the same network.
Your router is just connected to the mains plug... since obviously you won't have an ISP.

You should be able to use the "Create Network" option on your Mac from the Wireless dropdown on your top bar. Give it a name and it should be good for about 25-30 feet from your computer.
Setup plex server on the Mac and then use the plex app on your tablet (you might need to purchase it on the play store if you haven't already).
That should work "in theory". Worth a try. Easy peasy

Tried this last night, my N9 doesn't see the network after I have done the "Create Network" option on my Mac?
Guess it's back to the drawing board.
