.APK icon location - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone let me know where the icon for a stock APK is? I want to modify the messaging, contacts and phone icons in the dock but I can't find the image!

/system/app

I meant the icon for an app, is it in drawable-hdpi or somewhere else because I've been raking around for hours now

Where are system app icons stored?

I would like to take the icons from my Vibrant and use them on the LauncherPro Dock of my other phones.
Where can I find (for example) the Dialer icon... just the basic green dialer. My nexus has a clear/very little color icon, and I was not able to find our icon on some sites by googling...
Thanks.
bump, id like to hear the answer to this myself.

All of the system icons are located inside the .apk for the various system apps. For example, the Dialer is DialerTabActivity.apk in system/app/. If you open DialerTabActivity.apk in Root Explorer or WinRAR and look in /res/drawable-hdpi, you will find an image file named ic_launcher_phone.png. If I am understanding you correctly, that is the icon you are looking for.
Each icon would be located in a separate .apk for that particular application.

How to remove alarm icon from status bar?

I always have at least one alarm set and the icon stays there useless occupying the notification space. Can we remove it? I tried to search and found this thread. But no luck.
At least with JKay's v11 theme the alarm icon looks better and doesn't hurt that much, but I am still looking for a way to get rid of the icon itself.
Search Alarm Clock in the market and try one of the 3rd party alarm clock apps. Some of them allows you to remove the notification icon. The one I'm using is Caynax Alarm Clock, but it's only because I like the widget. Caynax also allows disabling the notification icon.

That could be one option. Thanks for that.
However I would still wait for a solution with the stock one.
If the smali edits in the other thread don't work, then probably the easiest way is to replace the alarm icon with a blank (transparent) .png file.
All of the icons are in the framework-res.apk file. I took a quick look and I think the icon is ic_lock_idle_alarm.png, under res/drawable-hdpi.
For replacing png files, you just need to open up framework-res.apk with a zip program (e.g. 7zip) and replace the png, no need to use apktool.

Thanks. This is could be another option. But I guess the invisible icon would still occupy the same amount of space.
JKay's 13.1 Settings now has an option for this. Just what I wanted. Many thanks JKay.

Change icons shortcut question

I know that you can set the TouchWiz to a customizeable grid and replace the icons at the bottom, but what I want to do is when I click on the messaging icon it takes me to handcent. I like handcents app but I like the stock messaging icon better. Is it possible to redirect the shortcut to handcent and dolphin for the browser?
I'm rooted btw and thanks.
You need to go to system apps and get the icon with an explorer (I love RootExplorer) from mms.apk and put the icon in place of the handcent icon. That make sense? I can't remember the names of the icons, but I want to think they are in hpdi or something. Don't quote me on file location though.
Alright I did that. This is what I did.
Went and extracted the messaging apparently, extracted handcent took the icon from the messaging apparently and put it.in.handcent and renamed it ic_handcent.png like the original, compressed handcent again as a zip and renamed it apk but when I try to install it keeps saying application not installed.
Any clue what I'm doing wrong?

Each apk file contains icons inside of res/drawable* . Sometimes there are drawable-hdpi, drawable-mdpi, etc. and sometimes just a main drawable directory. In addition to all icons being located inside of these drawable directories, the icon used by the Launcher is usually called "icon.png".
Official details are here: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design.html
Hope that helps!

Just extract this to wherever you like, then choose them from that location.

I have the icons... I just want to know where the icons are located within the res folder... they're usually in the drawable folders but i was only able to find the icon for the message apk and replace it with the ics icon. I couldn't find them in the other apks i'm trying to change the icons for and i'm curious if anyone knows where they are located.
