[Q] My Transformer Prime on the telly - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I picked up my TP at the weekend and seem to have one of the good ones. GPS can't get a lock, but I have no plans to use it for navigation...
I'm now looking at ways to play content from the Prime to my TV. I'm living in the Middle east right now, so options are limited to whats in the shops - Amazon etc. don't deliver.
The options are Boxee, WD TV Live & Apple TV. One of my preferences is to store content on a HD rather than stream using DLNA, so I will need to attach one of those to whatever box I get.
Will I be able to send files to the box without use of a computer?
Will I be able to browse content on the tablet?
If I do have to use DLNA can I use the tablet for other stuff while watching movies on the TV?
Can I plug a USB2 HD without power supply to the box?
Recommendations please...

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Am I stating the obvious here by saying 'HDMI cable'.
I don't quite get what you're looking to achieve
Do you just want to view your Prime's content on your TV?

Seconded.. Very confused by what you're trying to do. If all you want to do is display the video files on your prime, and have the prime send that signal to your TV, you just need an HDMI cable (and the mini-hdmi adapter). You can plug in external storage that has the video files to your prime via USB (if you have the dock or USB adapter) and play them.

Thanks, I'll try to clarify. I would like to be able to send movies and music wirelessly to a hard drive & play them on the TV. I would also like to be able to stream YouTube (and Vimeo if possible) onto the TV...
... & I would like to be able to do all of this while sitting on the couch - with my prime, using the device for other purposes.
I appreciate the feedback.

Maybe doubletwist airsync or something? Quality won't be all that... i'd use an HDMI cable to be honest....
also that uses a computer kinda as a media hub, I don't know of a way to go from point A (android) straight to point B (TV) without a computer.

>I would like to be able to send movies and music wirelessly to a hard drive & play them on the TV.
Given the Prime's weak wifi, that's probably not a good idea for HD content, or possibly even SD content. Second, if you multitask on the unit, you will likely get stutters in playback regardless of available bandwidth. The Prime doesn't have the processing power of a laptop.
If you're in the same room, a longish HDMI cable would be a better choice. Alternatively, get an ultraportable with good wifi performance.
>I would also like to be able to stream YouTube (and Vimeo if possible) onto the TV...
This can be done entirely on the media players you listed. There's no need for the stream to go through the Prime, which would incur both processing and wireless bandwidth overhead.

Blue tooth keyboard and the Prime dock to hook up the HDD to your prime via USB. Hook the Prime up to the TV with an HDMI cable, the blue tooth keyboard to navigate around the Prime while your sitting at your couch.
You want to get a powered HDD, the primes USB port might be too weak to power an external HDD, so get one that plugs in.

[Q] Wireless HDMI out options for Transformer??

So I have been hooking up my Transformer to my HDTV a lot lately to watch videos and whatnot, and I usually just plug it in with a standard mini-HDMI cable.
Lately I have been wanting to use it from my recliner though.
I am contemplating just buying a really long cable but thought I would ask here first in case someone had any better ideas.
Wireless options? Dock options?
Fill me in if you have any info!!
Thanks.
no such thing. sorry. you can't really use the TF while playing a video, so why do you need to right next to you?
for dedicated appliance though, i'd recommend a roku. get the highest level one with usb input.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Buy this one http://www.dealextreme.com/p/mini-hdmi-to-hdmi-adapter-dongle-14308
It's the Mini HDMI to HDMI Adapter.
It's "Made in China" but it's cheap so it won't hurt to try.
And then if you want, you buy this: http://us.zyxel.com/products/details.aspx?PC1indexflag=PDCA20118&CategoryGroupNo=PDCA201113 - the NEW wireless HDMI transmiter-receiver
Then everything'll be PERFECT
hi, anybody here have tried that method?
Seems pricey. Once the HDMI is plugged in you won't be able to use the tablet for anything else anyway.
But once you've got everything hooked up, you dont have to get up to change the show or anything like that. You can do it from the couch itself.
I would say it depends on what kind of videos you're planning to watch.
If you mean simple video files then try dlna (example skifta), but this method can only stream compatible files.
And for youtube etc you could use hdmi adapter with wireless hdmi as recommended before, but i wouldn't because i would be afraid of damaging my port because of the weight.
Just my two cents.
greetings flogger
If you're looking to just control the transformer from the couch, have you thought of running a vnc server on the tablet and controlling it using a phone?

A Rant about HTC/Samsung/Companies who make life so complicated. (Charging issue)

My overall dream and desire
= Have a tablet WITH GPS, with a nice screen, that I can buy cheap that supports at least Honey Comb. I want it to look good in my car and do things for the car. Slacker radio/google music/GPS duties. It'd be cool to have it doing email, etc.. but not needed.
I own a samsung epic. I had it almost completely figured out and installed....but then we find out that if you place your phone in desk dock or car dock, it farks up the sound output and aside from physically modding the dock with new parts there's no way to fix it.
ENTER THE FLYER!! WOOHOO!! Solution is found! HTC FLYER + MHL adapter and I'm all set!
Beautiful screen, MHL adapter means only one wire is seen etc etc etc.
What's the problem?
The DAMN CHARGING SYSTEM. I've got a 2 amp car charger that EVERY android device sees as "AC" ...
HOWEVER when you plug in this 2 amp AC charger into the MHL adapter.... DUN DUN DUN, the Flyer only sees it as a USB CHARGER, thus meaning that if you're using the thing to play music and having the screen stay on (as I do) the tablet cannot charge faster then it drains!!! WTF.
So the solution now is that I have to have two wires sticking out at opposite ends and I wasted 30 bucks on a damn MHL adapter.
Why the FARK can't companies get their SH!T together and just make something that works. IF you're going to be charging through the MHL ADAPTER WHY ON EARTH would it limit you to the lower charge rate...say you have it plugged into the real AC adapter...I'd assume this means that while going through the MHL adapter IT STILL would show up as USB charging (again not enough to keep up!!)..
Farking Stupid companies drive me insane.
here's someone complaining about the same thing on a samsung... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/galaxy-nexus-accessories/196278-mhl-adapter-charging-issues.html
so farking stupid.
Because...............the designers never farkin believed anyone would frickin try to mount a frakin tablet permanently in a frickin car. And frickin for sure never thought anyone would farkin use the MHL in a frickin car. LOL

haha, FINE.
However, if you take this tablet INSIDE and say you want to watch a netflix movie on your tv.
You do this
Oem charger >> MHL ADAPTER >> FLYER
So you're watching a netflix movie via hdmi with all your OEM branded stuff.
Guess what........it STILL doesn't charge fast enough. Will you make it through a 2 hour movie? Maybe... what if it's a 3 hour movie? Probably not.
How stupid does it get.
Here's the car charger I'm using.
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehi...Q9CA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333722016&sr=8-1
What I really would like is a tablet OR PHONE
that has this:
- Horizontal docking option (like the evo 3d)
- Dock MUST include AUDIO out
- Dock must be able to charge at the AC rate, not the USB rate
- Real GPS inside
- Wifi
- Preferably be no less than a 4 inch screen
- When routing Audio through dock it must not be degraded to changed in ANY form (aka samsung epic dock)
That's all I ask for. is it really that hard to find this elusive product??
I don't know of any devices that have a dock that meets your needs. There are of course many devices that meet your needs minus the dock. Or you could buy a Ford car with Sync and sync your device to their system.

Um... OR we could use the PS3, the PC, or any of a million other devices to watch netflix instead of our tablet..
I mean really.. do you have ANY idea how easy it has been made to connect almost any computer in the world to a TV and stream netflix? I mean really it is ONE cable. In addition to that.. I can't even begin to name all the devices that people can use to stream netflix.. but, let me just give you a few.
1. TVs with it built in.
2. PS3
3. Xbox 360
4. Wii
5. netbooks
Before you go off about how "stupid" it is.. you should really ask yourself how many people are relying on a tablet as their all in one go to device for everything.. I would say those people are stupid.. The HTC flyer was never in a million years designed to be your all in one go to media device. it is a great device designed for casual use.

Ok so we are now designing "multimedia tablets" to do less and less?
Your argument is pretty dumb mang.
Just because I have a full HTPC at my house doesn't mean that HTC should design a tablet, give it an HDMI out and then make it impossible to charge it (powering the device while losing battery charge is not "charging" while you're using it to do what they designed it to do.

HDMI out?

I tried to search, but for some reason the site isn't allowing me to search just this forum?
Does this phone include HDMI out? Is it via Mirco USB like the 3D? Do I need the MHL cable? Does anyone have a site they recommend buying one from? I've never used the HDMI out on my 3D or 4G. I've used it on my Transformer TF101 and it works well. I have to send in one of my ASUS RoG laptops, that I have hooked up to my 55" TV in my bedroom. I won't have anyway to watch movies except via my tablet while it is having the video card replaced (overheating). I would use my tablet, but I like to read on it and you can't hook it directly to a PC to transfer to the SD card. Same for my significant other's, she likes to work crosswords while movies are playing too, so I can't just use hers.
Long post, what cable do I need? Is this supported?

I see no mention of it in the fact sheets.
I have read on a few sites that it has microUSB w/MHL, so u would need the adapter, but I don't see anything on any official documentation about it (user guide, htc's website).
So I guess we'll see. Most sites say it does though. If not, you can use the HTC Media link, or any other DLNA to stream wirelessly.

Cannot imagine it would lack MHL which has been standard in HTCs high end handsets since the Sensation. GSMArena, who presently have a review unit, state that it has MHL in their specifications list which does suggest it is there (I only say suggest since GSMArena specifications have errors on occasion).

Looks cool, but I don't really want to spend $100 when a $10.00 cable will do the same thing. Purchased 3 or 4 would be absurd. I didn't see whether it output 1080P or what resolution. I would be happy with 720P output and $50 worth of cables for all my TVs and one if I wanted to travel. Shame it is MINI on tablets and MICRO on the phones. I checked Phonearena.com and they made no mention of it either. Hopefully whoever gets theirs first will have the cable to check. I am going to go ahead and order one as they are just a few bucks.

That is still $55 plus tax. I just order the cable for $8.00 shipped. I don't see the value in it being wireless as the adapter still has to be plugged into the TV and the wall and my phone likely won't make it through a movie without being plugged in too. When it becomes integrated into most all new TVs fine, but until then $50 worth of cables that I can hookup and leave installed on various TVs is better for me.
My understanding is that it is MHL. So, I purchased http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8805&seq=1&format=2 for $10.20.

I have a 4 or 6 footer always in my laptop bag and a 25 footer at home for the laptop or whatever - I probably should have a few more but don't. Next time I order micro USB cables I'll get a couple more.
So is the HTC Media Link just for those who don't have a DLNA tv? I have a new 55" Sony led tv and can stream music from my Evo 3D to my tv with out wires. Will be awesome if my Evo LTE can stream everything straight to my tv just like it would with the HTC Media Link, but without having to use the HTC Media Link!! I already have hdmi-micro hdmi cables that I use with my Transformer Prime if the new Evo connects that way. Also have a MHL adaptor that I use with my Evo 3D which is the way I assume the Evo LTE will work. That is if I'm hooking it up with a wired connection anyway...

Sounds like a wire is the best value for you, but I just wanted to comment on some of the features that makes this a great value for some people.
The ability to stream a movie to the tv wirelessly and still use your phone is great. I can stream a movie to the tv for the kids and still play games and surf the web (or even get some work done).
The other use for that is as a presenter. I can leave my laptop at home and just bring the Media Link and use the phone as both the source and controller. So awesome.
There are a bunch demos on youtube, just search "htc media link" (I can't link yet unfortunately).

Did not realize you could stream and still use the phone for other things. Let me make sure I follow. While a movie is playing wireless I can talk on the phone and/or surf the internet and it will not affect the movie? I guess I am having a hard time following, does it not have to be playing in the foreground? Does it not mirror the phones desktop?

From what I have seen in reviews and read yes you can kick off a movie playing over media link press the home key and use ur phone to send emails or whatever while the movie plays in background.
The phone will also do mirroring.
From what I can tell mirror mode is entered when u enable media link from home screen, otherwise if ur in a specific app and u enable media link only that app will show and you can run it in the background
I haven't read the user guide yet, but every time I have seen media link displayed that was what I saw

It can do both - Mirror, and basically use it as a 2nd display for video or stills while using your phone for other things.
See why I love it so much now?
Also, another nice thing you can use it for is to wirelessly stream your music to your tv or stereo.
As mentioned in my previous post, there are clear videos on youtube of its functionality if you search for "htc media link".
I got my MHL adapter today. It is no where near as clear as my TF101. It was tolerable on my 40" LCD at my shop, but I am betting it will look even worse on my 55" in my bedroom at home. I likely will only use it for the kid's room (I have a jank Evo 3D) and I don't care if she thinks the quality is poor. I doubt she will notice. Save me having to let her use one of our tablets and me having to put a laptop in her room. We don't want her on the internet yet, so this should be perfect.
so got my MHL adapter today and it doesnt work, cant even find an option for it in the settings like on my evo 3D. Spent 40.00 and been messing with it for a minute and still nothing. anything on this? if I don't get it working its getting returned lol
I got the $10 one from Monoprice and it doesn't work either unless im missing a switch or setting somewhere.
Sending it back and just going to wait to catch the Media Link HD on sale

Outputting to a TV - HDMI

Hi all,
Trying to output to TV - I have HDMI plugged into the TV and into the tablet using the HDMI port on the tablet but not seeing anything on the screen.
Is there anything I need to do to make the image output to the TV?
I am using a custom ROM - Woogy
Thanks
I am using the stock Rom. All I do is connect it as you have done and what ever is showing on the tablet is mirrored on the TV including sound.
I've not heard of Woogy. That may be your problem right there... All bets are off when you start using a non-factory OS.
I'm sure you had your reasons for the change to this ROM. You may want to investigate with the Woogy development community... Support of the HDMI is rather integrated to the OS.
AndroWook sorry
You might want to check what version of HDMI cable you have. I bought one from Amazon and it didn't work. Assuming the tablet or port was faulty, I RMA'ed it. Unsurprisingly, it was returned by Asus with a note saying "No fault found". It turns out that you need the correct type of HDMI cable, specifically 1.4. Look for "with Ethernet" in the description.
I bought a "with Ethernet" and it works great! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0060AU5MW
I have connected to the TV via HDMI using Androwook 2.2 and Stock / Surdu_Petru / Hund's Kernel, all have worked in 720p mode no problem.
Some cables are stiffer to plug all the way in.
I will check mine again when I get home. Didn't work though when I tried.

Oh, and it was a 1.4 cable

I would try a different cable first. It should be pretty straight forward after you plug it in. If another cable does not work, I would look into that custom ROM that you're using.

I think there is no way to use crop mode in 4.2, btw in Mx player, you can still use "cut" and "zoom" mode, to watch the movie in real fullscreen. It work for me fine.
Be careful with the micro-HDMI port. Don't put too much strain on it. I have to position my cable just right to make it work now (My Prime is a year and a half old). I only use it to play controller enabled games on my TV though.

You cant pick up the prime with hdmi plugged in or it will probably break. Has to be flat on a surface...
So flimsy...

Problems mirroring Z2 Tablet to projector/TV

Having a few problems with mirroring my Z2 tablet to a TV/projector. Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on some of the issues I am having as I seem to have reached a dead end.
I connect my xperia Z2 tablet to a none MHL projector using the Sony IM750 MHL adapter to present course slides at work and use it to connect to a none MHL TV at home. The picture is good but the adapter uses the power source and this drains the battery slowly from the tablet. I think the reason for this is that the IM750 is MHL 1.1. The tablet supports upto MHL 3.0 but as yet there does not seem to be any compatible adapters that are will work with the z2 tablet above MHL 1. If there was I am assuming that this would allow more current to get to the tablet and less or none at all would be drained from the tablet battery? Samsung currently sell an MHL 2.0 adapter but this will not work with the z2 tablet as it is has a 11 pin fitting rather than a 5 pin. I wish that someone out there would make a 5pin MHL 2.0 or even better MHL3.0 adapter that would work with the tablet, I have spent many hours on the internet but cannot find one.
I have also tried miracast to connect my tablet to my LG TV but there is noticeable lag and the screen can be glitchy at times. Does anyone know whether this would be the case if I used the netgear PTV3000? would it be better than the TV and is it worth a punt from amazon I suppose I could always return it if it does not work as well as I like.
Any ideas anyone it just doesn't seem at the moment that there is a reliable solution to connect the Z2 tablet to a projector or TV or has anyone found anything better?
If you don't need screen mirroring (do you need it? Really???), then other possibilities to bring video or photo to a screen are MUCH better / more problem-free and widely recommended than MHL or Miracast.
- Chromecast
- Android TV sticks / boxes which can receive content via DLNA
- Raspberry Pi with XBMC
- Other mini computer (like Intel NUC) with XBMC, Plex or something like that.
Stop bothering with MHL or Miracast, it will save your nerves.
Yes tell me about it it's a real pain. I have quite specific needs so I think I probably do need to mirror. I work as a trainer giving presentations all over the place so I need something that is not dependant on having a wifi signal as it tends to be poor at best at places that I work, so mhl and miracast do seem like my only options as they don't require connection to a router. As far as I am aware there doesn't seem to be a perfect option for none Samsung android tablets which is disappointing as I am big fan of my z2. I might have to go back to my win 8 laptop which I don't really want to do. I can't understand why there is not a 5 pin mhl 2.0 adapter.

I think the issue, is Chromecast requires the user to be part of a Wifi Network to connect? If you're in a location where there is no Wifi available, well........
