Outputting to a TV - HDMI - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi all,
Trying to output to TV - I have HDMI plugged into the TV and into the tablet using the HDMI port on the tablet but not seeing anything on the screen.
Is there anything I need to do to make the image output to the TV?
I am using a custom ROM - Woogy
Thanks

I am using the stock Rom. All I do is connect it as you have done and what ever is showing on the tablet is mirrored on the TV including sound.

I've not heard of Woogy. That may be your problem right there... All bets are off when you start using a non-factory OS.
I'm sure you had your reasons for the change to this ROM. You may want to investigate with the Woogy development community... Support of the HDMI is rather integrated to the OS.

AndroWook sorry

You might want to check what version of HDMI cable you have. I bought one from Amazon and it didn't work. Assuming the tablet or port was faulty, I RMA'ed it. Unsurprisingly, it was returned by Asus with a note saying "No fault found". It turns out that you need the correct type of HDMI cable, specifically 1.4. Look for "with Ethernet" in the description.
I bought a "with Ethernet" and it works great! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0060AU5MW

I have connected to the TV via HDMI using Androwook 2.2 and Stock / Surdu_Petru / Hund's Kernel, all have worked in 720p mode no problem.
Some cables are stiffer to plug all the way in.

I will check mine again when I get home. Didn't work though when I tried.

Oh, and it was a 1.4 cable

I would try a different cable first. It should be pretty straight forward after you plug it in. If another cable does not work, I would look into that custom ROM that you're using.

Any idea on how to get the crop mode for HDMI back on 4.2? I see that ASUS has removed the feature...
My device no longer can go full screen when watching movies, and using it in general through HDMI...

I think there is no way to use crop mode in 4.2, btw in Mx player, you can still use "cut" and "zoom" mode, to watch the movie in real fullscreen. It work for me fine.

Be careful with the micro-HDMI port. Don't put too much strain on it. I have to position my cable just right to make it work now (My Prime is a year and a half old). I only use it to play controller enabled games on my TV though.

I have a similar issue with mine now. If it's not positioned properly the picture goes all fuzzy. I really need HDMI to work because we watch movies though the prime on the home theatre a few times a week!
You cant pick up the prime with hdmi plugged in or it will probably break. Has to be flat on a surface...
So flimsy...

HDMI Mirroring

I ordered the MHL adaptor from T-Mobile's website yesterday, so I should get it today (yeah, I paid the extra $6 for overnight shipping).
Does this phone support FULL mirroring (i.e., when plugged in to TV, TV screen mirrors whatever is on the phone's screen)? I used the full HDMI app on my Evo 4G, and it was great for watching shows from HBO GO on my TV.
Has anyone tried it yet? If not, is there a review out there somewhere that specifically demonstrates this feature?
I guess I'll know tonight when I get home from work!
Thanks,
Rob
I haven't seen it specifically on this phone, but I've seen the Qualcomm MSM8660 demos showing full mirroring. We should be capable of it, but I haven't tried it out yet.
I'm surprised nobody's tried it yet!
Can you use the normal micro HDMI or do you have to buy the adapter to use HDMI? Lol kinda confused how this works with the new port? Could anyone explain? Thanks
You need to buy an adaptor. Basically, it's a dongle that plugs into the USB (charger) on the E3D. The dongle/adaptor has a HDMI port on it, along with a USB port. You plug an HDMI cable into the HDMI port, and into the TV. You plug a charger into the USB port and into the wall.
So no, the HDMI cable from the EVO 4G (I have one too) won't work.
Does that help?

Thanks for clearing that up!!
Back to the issue at hand... does it do HDMI mirroring or not? I have this bad ass HDMI integration in my Prius that is preventing me from upgrading from the 4G until at least HDMI mirroring is confirmed.

According to this demo from CTIA it appears it can, but this is unfinished testing hardware/firmware so it's still not a confirmation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ynmqtopi9g
This doesn't exactly give you an answer with the level of certainty you are looking for but it's a good sign. We should see some end users with feedback on HDMI features on the production phone streaming in any time now that hopefully confirms that it can do this across any application without problems or limitations.

hey rtmeikle . I also got the mhl from tmobile. I hooked it up last night to sadly find out that hdmi mirroring is not supported at all. It was all a big hype it appears. Were you able to get it working? I'm hoping that you were so maybe its just my device....if not, then this phone is going back.
Yep, I got mine yesterday and tested it. It works fine.
You have to have the adaptor plugged in to the phone, a charger plugged to the adaptor, and the HDMI cable running from the phone to the TV.
I got full HDMI mirroring which automatically switched to landscape when I tested Netflix and HBO Go.

interesting. thanks for the quick respond. When i connect it to my hd tv all i get on the phone is a message that says *HDMI play a video or slideshow to display via hdmi* on the notifications bar. When I click that, nothing happens...

Strange. The image of my home screen just popped up on my TV; I didn't have to do anything.
I tested it on the TV in my bedroom, a 3-yr-old Samsung 42" Plasma, nothing fancy.
Maybe tonight I'll test it on my other two TVs and see if it works on all of them.
did you allow the latest OTA upgrade or did you cancel it? I allowed it as soon as I turned the phone on. I also tried it on my 58 samsung plasma hdtv. Its not that old but also not that new.
I'm going to try it tonight on my smaller 32 inch lcd hd tv to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't though.
Not like it matters since all MHL cables are the same but here is the MHL adapter I'm using: http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/AddOns...4ec1-a08e-e133fa772d53&inCart=True&catCode=23

Yep, I've accepted the OTAs. And I'm using the exact same adaptor. Did you plug power into the adaptor too? I didnt' try without plugging it in, but I've heard that it needs to be plugged in to work.
Ok, i finaly got it to work. It wasn't a problem with the phone but a problem with the tv. I had to change some resolution settings on the tv and presto! Hdmi mirroring on its full glory
Now, do you know if I can pair up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Thats next for me.

This is what I am currently doing. I have hooked up the following.
Mouse: Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Keyboard: Logitech MX5500 Keyboard
The keyboard works great. I can type in the applications and setup my keys in the emulators just fine (snesoid etc)
Mouse functionality though is different then you may expect. You don't get a mouse cursor, it just "highlights" selections then you "left click" to go forward. According to my research the right mouse button is supposed to "go back" but is not working for me.
I put up a thread asking others for help with it, so if I find an answer I will let you know.
Updating you on what I found out about the mouse.
"Well it looks like the fancy mouse support with a cursor and button functionality was something that was included in CyanogenMod 6.X then removed on CyanogenMod 7.
They then added a patch for version 7. But now apparently it is being included in his latest CyanogenMod.
Regardless, it appears you need root access "

the adapter has a USB plug that you use to hook up to a charger, and will charge your phone. Newer TVs are coming that will support charging over HDMI via the MHL adapter, there may be some out but I think will be a standard in 2012 TVs.

Well, it is about what you would expect from WVGA stretched to a 1080p screen. Not bad, not great.
So it will record 1080p but outputs it at 800x480 via the hdmi? If that is the case then that's extremely disappointing.
I think it changes resolution when playing video. Notice how the screen blanks out briefly before playback begins? I think that's the resolution switchover. At least that's what happens on my international SGS2...
I want one.. but is it worth it? lol
just wanna verify that it mirrors your screen, correct? so its fully operational while outputting?
Complete mirror of screen. Can confirm movie playback is in 1080p. Fully functional.

UPDATE: I think I answered my own question by reading other threads: you need to actually separately power the adapter through the USB port on its side. That's a bummer, so you actually need a separate USB power source!

Ya mine is being blocked as well. I bought the OEM Samsung one to watch my media hub stuff. Kinda disappointing. As stated before if you start the playback before you plug it in it works quite well.
So I just picked up an adapter locally and while it works just fine, I'm not sure it's working as it should with regards to charging. If I simply have the adapter plugged in and then plugged into the wall, it charges very very very slowly. If I actually plug in the hdmi cable and do something like stream a video, buh bye battery life. It drains crazy fast.
This adapter from Amazon, does the charger help keep the battery at around the same level while in use or do you see it drop a good bit as well?
Oh and with regards to MediaHub, whether I start a video before hooking up this adapter or after, I still get the same error on my tv about protection, etc.

[Q] Viewsonic g tablet help SmoOth Bean 4.1.2 ver 1.5(Standard PlayStore) 160 DPI ROM

I bought a Viewsonic g tablet on sale a year and a half ago and until this day it meets the light. (It was only touched when purchased then back to the box)
I followed the instructions to the letter (new on this) and everything seems to be working, I have a Malata zpad dock DS-A002 supposed to be fully compatible with the g tablet and I placed the tablet on the dock, connected HDMI in the TV but nothing happens.
Don't see an option in settings to select output to TV.
Many thanks in advance.
Forgot to mention, tried this on the TV which is an LG and monitor which is a Hanns-G
I have to say that this is a first so far. When I read this I went ahead a connected up my dock which is the same make and model as yours to my TV and it works. HDMI is sometimes a pain especially with the newer TV's that are out. You also got to have the dock powered up if you haven't done that. If the power cord is connected and the tablet displays the dock clock then connect the HDMI to the dock with the TV turned off. After connection is made turn on the set and make sure you are on the proper input. It should work, but if not try a different TV.

Thanks for the reply
The LCD TV is a couple of years old, the LCD monitor is 3ish years old
My mother has a 5yr old LCD TV, that's another TV I could test on
The dock is powered up using the charger that came with the gTab
The tablet displays the dock clock when placed on the dock
I've tried different combinations:
Dock powered up, TV off and plugin cable, gtab on then place on dock, turn TV on
Dock powered up, TV off and plugin cable, gtab off then place on dock and power on, turn TV on when gtab is on the dock clock
Dock powered up, TV on and plugin cable, gtab on then place on dock
Dock powered up, TV on and plugin cable, gtab off then place on dock and power on
TV detects HDMI when the gtab is placed on the dock, but after 3-5 secs says no signal meaning it does detect HDMI (shows up as an option, I've tried on all 3 HDMI inputs btw) but it doesn't show up an image.
I've tried these methods in the TV and the monitor, nothing
Doesn't make sense to me since everyone in the thread hasn't had this issue, should be plug-and-play right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900562
Should I backup the current install and go back to the stock crappy ROM just to test it out? (Wipe everything as instructed before doing so?)
Thanks
No since in going all the way back to stock to test it out. Have you by chance tried a different HDMI cable. You might have a faulty connection or even a dirty connection will make it loose its connection. You may also want to check to see if the TV has a default native setting set. The gtablet will display a image like a PC I believe. Will have to connect it up again to see what res. the device puts out at default.
Alright find the link up solution. I tried different ways of connection all with failure to display on my TV with the exception of this. Try it and you will be satisfied.
1st. Place you dock near your TV with power cord and HDMI cable both connected. Don't connect other end of HDMI cable to TV just yet.
2nd. Have tablet turned on and fully booted up. Then place tablet on dock and leave the dock clock displayed.
3rd. Turn on TV and set the input to the HDMI connection you are about to connect to. Then connect HDMI to that input that is in TV and the display should reflect the device.
Let me know if this works. Thanks.

Hi, yes I tried 2 different cables, different ports, cleaned up (blow air) into the TV and and dock ports (dock is brand new never used from a year+ ago)
I couldn't find a default native setting on the TV.
Really sucks that there is an awesome ROM for the gtablet and I can't use it on the bigger screen, intention was to watch Netflix and movies, besides reading

I keep mine at 160dpi. The issue is that you have to connect everything to the dock before connecting it up to the TV. For some strange reason the dock settings doesn't recognize the connections being made. The dock works fine it is the drivers I believe that are kernel related. If you power up the dock with the HDMI connected to it, then place tablet on the dock, then connect the HDMI to the TV's input with the TV on and turned to that input. Then it should display onto the TV without issues. Done this multiple times when this came up and this was the only way for me to get the dock to display the output of the tablet.

The thing is I did exactly as you said multiple times to be sure.
Using SmoOth image does not come up
Restored to stock ROM and image shows up fine
I'm going to try a fresh SmoOth install and see how it goes or is there any way to check the drivers or make adjustments to it?
Thanks
Any advice on checking the drivers?
Thanks
Actually the drivers are there and working the way they are suppose to be. I do believe that it might in the way it is communicating with the TV still. I am currently working on something that might help out, but I want to test it fully before suggesting it since most everyone doesn't use this feature.

Thanks a lot for the follow-up Nobe

The one in your link is for the N2 and S3-S4. One new feature the N3 came out with is the USB 3.0.
I'm waiting for Sammy to come out with a dedicated dock for the N3 to take advantage of the higher speeds, that is if you want to set it up as your new desktop computer with mouse/keyboard, HDMI monitor and an external HDD hooked up to it... I'll wait.
The one in the link is for the GN3 as well if you check.
I wouldn't hold my breath. Samsung doesn't seem to be in any hurry to come out with ANY accessories for the GN3, let alone a dock that is going to be pretty much the same as this one. The 3.0 usb is only faster for smaller files. There's been a couple of guys on the forums who have run some tests. I personally have found it a little faster for some things, but overall, not much. With my set up and an SSD, I'm not waiting for anything at all when I'm working on it.

It should work fine, but I don't have one so I can't test it to see. By connecting the keyboard with a mouse it automatically switches the interface to the mouse instead of the phones touch screen, so It may or may not see the touch screen feature of the monitor. I would just take it to someplace like Best Buy and test it first if I were you.

Right, it's compatible with the N3, but it doesn't mean it was made for it.
So you think the end user would benefit more (see the actual speed increase) from the 64 bit computing rather than transfer speeds increase from using the USB 3.0? I'm sure the dock station mean for a light home use (internet, documents, multimedia, etc, not sure about gaming with this setup) and not for the 3D modeling and such? I honestly can't say that I was blown away from switching to 64 bit home PC and notebook, the noticeable difference on a phone would be even less.
Thinking about it, can't even say I'd see the benefits of USB 3.0 as I don't (and won't be) copying files between the phone memory and the external storage.

I'll try to get you some pics this weekend. It should fit with your case. I have the Poetic Invictus (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EXA6WY6/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) on mine and it fits with room to spare. The GN3 sits just a little bit to the left in the stand due to the location of the USB 2 connection, but it is very slight and barely noticable, imo.

I'm a bit concerned that case seems' significantly thinner than mine but the pics will be much appreciated It will allow me to make an informed decision and have you done the HDMI connection to a TV is there an issue with it or is everything on the dock working properly I saw the video about the KMV switcher where he forced landscape but the sizing issue is of concern I'll probably have to bite the bullet on that one.

Everything works perfectly. I watch full screen HD movies on my home theater system all the time. And the dock automatically switches the view on the HDMI connected peripheral to landscape. as long as you have daydream toggled off in display and desk home screen display toggled on in accessory. You should also set HDMI audio output to surround if you have a home theater system.
You don't need KMV switcher.
I get my movies from Showbox. Due to XDA policies, I can't post the apk for it here, but you can just Google it to download and install.
I am not getting 1080p
When I hook up the dock to the monitor it is giving me 1280x720. Any ideas?
Hello... I would buy this dock. But a question. Why have the note3 so a different usb-connector.. Micro-usb +??? My Orginal Samsung otg cable works. My non Samsung Orginal mhl-hdmi cable works. What or for What is this connector.. Another little help please. Cover and dock works together i read, is this right? I use Orginal Samsung s view Cover.
Gn3 has a usb3.0 connector. Standard 2.0 micro USB works fine
I'm really disappointed with the smart dock.
There is a lag of half a second between the action and the display on the TV screen, It's impossible to play any games in theses conditions.

Sounds like something wrong with your setup. There are a number of vids on YouTube showing the SmartDock in action, including one by XDA member NZTechFreak, demonstrating outstanding response - certainly no sign of "half a second" lag.
PM him and he may be able to offer you advice on getting it to work correctly.
This smart dock is really very nice .....

There is lag from the MHL connection to the TV. I've an aftermarket MHL to HDMI cable and Samsungs own MHL connection, both which have a lag on TV screen compared to what is actually happening on the device.
Fine for Movies and Stuff, but completely unsuitable for gaming.

See NZtechfreak's YouTube vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hy3wETf5o0 here.
He plays games with the SmartDock and his PS3 controller, so "completely unsuitable for gaming" is a bit of an exaggeration.
And nobody said there was no lag. I questioned the previous poster's "half second" lag experience. The lag through the dock is closer to a tenth of a second, as is clearly visible the clip.
If that's unacceptable to you, then your choice is clear - don't get one. And not everybody plans on gaming. For me, the ability to stream Netflix to my TV justifies the SmartDock's existence.

Anyone try connecting Mate 10 to monitor

Hi. Has anyone tried using a USB C-to-HDMI cable to connect Mate 10 to a monitor. How do you like it? Do apps scale well on monitor? Assuming you hooked up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, have you tried editing a document? Thanks!
still waiting for my Mate 10! But one of the reasons for getting one is USB-C to HDMI. One thing I noted when sourcing a cable - if you use a "standard" cable you won't be able to stream Netflix/Amazon streaming due to lack of "HDCP" compliance. I got a cable that was compliant for a few euro more on Amazon. Just keep this in mind if you want to stream Netflix etc.
Does anyone know if this would work with a Surface Pro 4? The SP4 has a mini display port, so maybe with a mini display port adapter, we can connect Mate 10 to the SP4 and view desktop mode on the tablet. Would that work?

Well the cable I have purchased is the one linked below - which the manufacturer says (elsewhere) is the HDCP compliant one. I can't guarantee you that it will work though!
I am expecting my phone and this cable this week so will try out!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XS7T4GP
NOTE - this manufacturer also sells usb-c to hdmi cables that it says are NOT compliant. Only one above is one they say is compliant.

Thanks I'll look for it here in Amazon US, no problem returning so might as well try.
I tried it out briefly when I got the phone.
I used a type c to HDMI adapter, with a normal HDMI cable.
Some things I noticed:
I think this drained the battery more than anything else I've done with the phone (including gaming).
The phone was noticeable warm after the session.
My phone rebooted shortly after the desktop session. Like it crashed.
The phone states it's in reverse charge mode, like juice is also bring drained from the phone to the TV.
I couldn't get YouTube to work full screen without borders. Unless I was mirroring the phone screen (which means phone screen also remains on).
I've mixed feelings, it's early days I guess.
Ok, I am still waiting for the cable from Amazon but ended up purchasing an adaptor from Maplin.
Worked fine - as in outputted screen of phone (in phone or 'desktop' mode).
But I did notice that the screen resolution as outputted was far less than the resolution of the screen - I would have expected the 1080p display to mirror across to the TV.
It wasn't that it was bad, just blurry text and not crisp when looking at video. Whereas in the past, with a phone with an actual hdmi connection as opposed to usb-c, or indeed when outputting a media player with hdmi or casting using chromecast, the quality is perfect.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong or perhaps the Maplin cable is not up to speed. Open to ideas.

Interesting. Sounds like you are using Mate 10 Pro. Wonder if resolution is improved using Mate 10.

I was wondering about the battery drainage. Some cables I've seen have an additional input for charger. Maybe that might help

No, normal Mate 10.
Other cable arrived and same situation. To clarify, it's fine, and perfectly watchable, just not crystal clear. It strikes me that this method seems like the usb-c to hdmi cable is simply mirroring the display of the phone rather than actually outputting the video file itself independently - as would happen with a HDMI connection as you used to get on some phones. Perhaps this is something to do with the issue.

......hope you post result of amazon cable! have a nice day!
It was amazon cable I referred to above. So same with maplin adaptor and amazon cable. Tried outputting a HD YouTube video but not much different. As I say, fine, but not as clear as would expect if you copied that file to a media player attached to a tv via hdmi
Hooked mine up with the Huawei supercharger and cable and it slowly drains the battery in desktop mode. Without charger it will suck down the battery fast. Benched with Antutu and got 175k on phone. In desktop on 30" monitor got 157k. Still faster than my Mate 9. My S8+ in Dex was just about worthless. Also with the M10 in desktop with wired mouse has zero lag. Bluetooth mouse a different story. So gaming is pretty good on a monitor.
Ok, I "solved" my problem by fluke. I would love if someone more techy than me could explain but this is what I did to fix the fact that the HDMI output looked more like 640x480 than a hi def picture.
Went to TV settings, and selected advanced, HDMI settings, and Changed HDMI "Auto" mode to HDMI Graphic mode (choice of Graphic/Video - video was default and was crap). As soon as I did this I had perfect outputted photos and videos.
According to one tv manual I found on a search:
"Graphic: HDMI input timing set to Graphic mode (PC) - The image is full scan.
Video: HDMI input timing set to Video mode. The image is over scan."
According to someone on a completely unrelated PS4 forum:
"Basically by changing the HDMI mode to graphic, the HDMI output (be it gaming console, pc, or cable) bypasses "extra" processing features of the TV that
make the game and TV broadcasts look crappy and also causes lag. By bypassing those features you will get a much clearer picture."
Either way, it's fixed. On my tv. And on a shop tv the same issue. So given that I've connected previous phones with hdmi connections a few years ago without issues, this suggests that it is something to do with how the Mate 10 outputs signals in a way that TV recognises?
Love to hear an explanation from the experts. Thanks.
Edit: someone else with a similar issue on another device - so it seems the issue is that the Mate 10 is not recognised by most Televisions as a "PC" which would correct hdmi mode to "graphics" ?
"When I switch between the Blu-Ray and the PC on two separate HDMI inputs, the TV doesn't detect that's it's connected to a PC, so it doesn't switch from video to graphics mode - which is required for it to look good as a computer monitor.
Since the TV deosn't recognize the PC and auto switch to graphics mode, when I switch from Blu-Ray to PC, I have to dig down into the menu and switch the HDMI mode to graphics manually - and then back when I go to the Blu-Ray. -- Major pain if I'm switching back and forth."
Any ideas? Is this something Huawei could fix in firmware?

It looks like its related to the TV resolution : I have the same issue (640*480 resolution) when I connect the mate 10 pro to a 4K native TV but it works perfect when connected to a full HD TV !! It's a shame as 4K tend to be the standard display, so I guess Huawei should fix it whith a firmware update. Any other solution (HDMI 2.0 cable maybe??) ?
