Massive email lag fix - set up from scratch - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I have one Exchange account and two IMAP accounts. After using the Note for about a month, my stock email client was getting slower and slower. It became essentially unusable today; I couldn't even select a message to load. Reclaiming memory and force closing/rebooting did nothing.
I noticed email was taking up 85MB in the applications screen, so I cleared storage and set up my accounts from scratch again (PITA). Now email works much better and only takes 3MB of space. I'm assuming there's a memory problem in the email app, so anyone using it who experiences this, try setting up your email again and see if it helps (obviously do not do this if you use POP and don't have copies of your messages elsewhere).

I take it back...laggy again after half a day. Can't do anything with the Note for about 10 to 15 seconds after opening an email account.

use another email app

good thread, are we the only 2 who find the stock email app to be Turribly laggy?
what options are there? i am new to Android.
tx --- art.

I stop using it. I already started deleting apps that i dont use to keep them out of memory.

My response to this was lost (tapatalk). I switched to Enhanced Email, which removes the lag issue completely. But it isn't without its own issues. It doesn't sync tasks and if you enable calendar sync it eats your battery within hours. Too bad the stock client is so bad. Maybe ICS will fix it, but EE is probably my best option for now since I have Exchange + 2 IMAP accounts and I really want a single/combined inbox option.

i will check out EE, tx haus!

ahh $10, not worth it to me. this is for my business, but i dont wanna spend $ if i dont have to.
i wonder if using gmail or K9 for my own business' email to push emails from my godaddy email account to my Gnote is safe.?.
any opinions on gmail or K9 being secure for business use?

I too am looking for a decent email app, has anyone tried K-9 Mail??

Another +1 for EE.
The stock email was laggy to the point of being unusable. EE runs really smooth with a month of email sync'd in both my exchange and gmail accounts. It does however use up about 53MB of RAM.

You spent $300 on a phone for business and the one-time $10 charge puts you over the top?

yes
i've spent enough $ on app's that i later regretted buying. this problem seems to be something simple enough that a free app would take care of it. i could be wrong though :-\
so far the free GoDaddy app has sped the process up and i get my emails lag-free now

Enhanced E-mail $10 if you want a really good one

K9 is good and it's free, https://market.android.com/details?...result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5mc2NrLms5Il0. But I agree that Enhanced is good as well.
On stock app, how are you getting it to open to your mail? mine opens to the account screen.

No much difference btween stock and Enhanced email. They both suck to handle folders. Also EE have less of sync schedules compare to stock
If you need an exchange email. I recommend Moxie Mail. Show folders in order + show new email indicators at the corners.

if you think that then its either been awhile since you have used EE or never have or very limited. it has way more sync schedules than stock and handles folders just fine.

And the stock Touchwiz e-mail app won't delete e-mails from any of my IMAP servers. EE does it flawlessly. I just wish the UI was a little cleaner and professional. Some of the graphics are blurry and the oval "processing" icon isn't sized correctly, so it gets cropped on the sides when rotating.

I just uninstall EE yesterday. I guess you don't have exchange mail to use.
First, EE don't show Exchange SUB-folder in order also you have no way to know the sub-folders got new email or not unless you click to open that sub-folder(just like stock email). Enlightened me how please?
Second, EE sync have exacly sync schedule as stock BUT don't even have OFF-PEAK schedule (days) like stock. Show me where to use OFF PEAK schedule in EE too please?
Thanks

It's the graphics, not text formatting. It looks fine on devices with a smaller display, but because it's enlarged on the Note it makes the bitmap graphics blurry. Changing the formatting options did nothing for me but change the way the text looks. It's not that bad, I'll deal with it. I'm just glad I can delete my e-mails, lol.

ok I guess we use email 2 totally different ways. Considering I am the Manager over Network Operations and also the exchange server administrator over the corporation yeah I would think I do use exchange email.
You are correct on both accounts you dont get email alerts for sub-folders and cant set peak and off peak times but it does give you more scheduling options outside of that than the stock email app.
I usually dont put anything important in subfolders under my email box and allow my outlook client to sort into PST files when I launch my outlook client. This keeps the size of my exchange account smaller and its to me a pain in the ass to figure out which folder I am getting alerted on so it really dont matter to me about sub-folder email alerts. If I want to see if a particular email has been received I usually just go to that folder and look for it.
As for the peak non peak times I am not even interested in getting that granular with the schedules in the least as I need my emails about the same whether its 10pm or 10am my job doesnt dictate when I dont need emails as regular.
my comment to you wasnt to start a pissing match with you btw.
All I want to know is, HOW CAN I OPEN THE STOCK EMAIL APP SHOWING THE ACTUAL EMAILS versus the account screen first?
Thanks....

Sorry for being a crazy nut. I wasn't start any pissing match at all . I was disappointed with EE because i spend 10 bucks and it's just the same as stock (in my oppinion). For my Exchange email, a have lots of sub folder category that needed for my work and those need to show me if I get new emails. Also for sync schedule i just see 15m, 30m 1h, 4h... in EE exactly same as stock with no peak hours and selected day(I don't want to have push emails when i'm home (4 hours sync maybe). So Moxie Mail solve my problem: show sub-folder in correct order and sync/show my new mail in sub folder.

Hey there, I'm the developer of Enhanced Email and long time XDA member/contributor. Regarding your sub-folder issue, it sounds like you don't know how to enable sync on sub-folders from my app. You just long-press on any sub-folder and select "Toggle sync" from the context menu that appears. You'll begin receiving notifications for those folders now when new mail arrives.
Regarding the "folder hierarchy" issue, that is in the works. Technically, if you set up an IMAP account the folder hierarchy shows just fine. It only shows the list of folders flat for Exchange accounts due to Exchange not providing the tiered name in the folder properties like IMAP does. You have to actually create the tiered name by matching folder IDs to their names and following parent IDs till you reach the root folder. It's a mess but like I said it's in the works.

Exchange email and calendar eating battery

Does anyone here have an exchange account on their note, and has noticed that on occasion the email and calendar apps are eating the battery?
This is the second time this has happened to me. As you'll see by my screenshot, the usage is even higher than the display and is keeping the phone awake. This happened to me this past weekend and I deleted the account and re-added it. That seemed to clear up the issue but now it's back.
Anyone else experience this?

I had the issue with email. I just went into settings and adjusted the sync schedule. I basically turned email off while I was asleep. That worked wonders for me.

This happens to me all the time. I think it is an issue that Android has when syncing to exchange servers. mine consistently will lose sync and I get repeated unable to connect messages so basically exchange just keeps the phone awake in constant attempt to sync. I've tried other email exchange apps and they work for a few days or more but then the issue starts up again. This was a problem on my epic 4g, evo4g and my Samsung intercept. I think your best bet is to do what you've been doing, monitor when your phone is acting up, remove your exchange account and add it back in again. That's pretty much what I do now. I wish sometimes that I didn't have to use my phone for work. Fyi with touchdown email clients app this has never been an issue. Try the 30 day trial. I just didn't want to spend the money on the app.

Install CPU Spy - I'll bet that you'll see it is keeping the CPU on a high speed and not entering deep sleep. Then kill the email app via the Task Manager and go back to see if that solves the CPU.

I'm assuming that you are using exchange sync'ed. I do, getting e-mail fine, calendar just isn't working. After a little google fu', there are multiple reports of the same thing. If yours is working, it maybe an exchange issue on my end then.

Serious bug on all s3's

Mail for exchange using your company email doesn't work in native Email client works in gmail app.
Phone signal is very dodgy and both my phones had severe call dropping issues, no its not my network!
Confirmed by Samsung they have any other issues with it too eg mails not syncing on corporate acs using google apps, huge bug with cell reception
Samsung told me that the phone was tested in Korea and not anywhere else they didnt see these issues cos in Korea they didn't test the email bug for providers abroad.- duh, stupid excuse!
Dont buy if using for work emails it's the worst phone for it and ofcourse for the signal and battery issues rapid discharge lasted only for 6 hours MAX
I had 2 and sold them both cos I got so frustrated trying to set it up.
My corporate exchange account works perfectly in the S III`s mail (not GMail) client.
There is, however, one feature that is missing from the S2, which is the ability to sync the Notes from my Exchange account. With the S2 I`d write notes in Outlook and then they`d automagically appear in the S2. With the S3 the S-Memo apps replaces Notes and it`s quite useless in that sense.

Can't say anything about emails as I only sync mail on my tablet. But you're wrong about receptionband battery life. Reception is just as good as the S and S2 for me with no dropped calls so far. As for battery life, I can get over 5 hours of screen time with a total up time of 20 hours with regular use consisting of browsing and gaming.

Perhaps not in your firmware or your particular configuration.
In the LF6 (or was it LF2?) it works fine sync'ing to an Exchange 2010 Server via activesync (exchange push.) At least it works fine for me with my configuration.
Sometimes can be due to OSI layer 9 = user problem. Especially migrated from iphone which they don't understand how to use the system and they started to complaning the phone and follow by provider lastly the manufacturer.

On my SIII ( Canada, Telus ), exchange email client crashes occasionally. I have lot of rules ( client side ) that move email to folders depending on sender, subject etc. I originally thought that crash may be due to email getting moved to another folder by outlook while SIII's client was still trying to grab it or something... However it will also crash when I am not using my laptop and therefore have no other client reading my exchange email.
Not sure if symptoms you see are similar or something different.
Biggest bug I've seen is insects flying at the S3's screen mistaking it for a truck window.
Maybe you mixed something up or i don't understand something correct, exchange is microsoft exchange and works flawless (at least for me), gmail is another thing which got nothing to do with exchange.
For gmail you got your own dedicated app, no need for integration within the Samsung email app and if you still want to use it there, make sure to use imap and not exchange, because this is only to synchronize to Microsoft exchange servers.
Last but not least, no call problems or signal drops from my side and I'm getting juice for a full day with moderat to heavy use, also it's a bit heavy to title it as serious bug in all s3 only because you and some others can't get it to work.
Edit: just checked it and added my gmail account as common mail account (to get the mails at the Samsung app) works flawless even no need to set a server myself, i would recommend you to read properly and check the matter before moaning something does not work at all devices.

[Q] Need mail sync help

My unrooted GN2 isn't fetching mail. I'm not sure if it's a bug or user error and would appreciate some help. I've got just one [pop3] email account and use the stock email app with the latest firmware. In the settings for this account under Period to sync it's 1 month or 100 emails. Under Sync schedule both peak and off-peak are set to every 15 minutes. I haven't roamed yet but it's set to the same settings while roaming. All the server settings are correct because when I manually send and receive it works fine. If I go to settings/email from the home screen the account is listed and below it it says sync disabled, with no way to enable sync-ing. Would be grateful to get this issue solved.
I haven't use the native email app in four years now. I did this a long time ago and it's worked great for me: http://www.androidcentral.com/using-gmail-your-own-personal-push-mail-server
If you don't want to use the Gmail app, you might want to consider using one of the 3rd party email clients in the Play Store. It seems that K-9 is the most popular.
If you want to stick with the native email app I would recommend that you remove the email account and reinstall it. Someone that uses that app will probably have some better advice for you soon.
Good luck.
Thanks- I'm gonna give it a little time before I change apps. Re-installing the account will be the next thing I try if I can't figure it out soon. In the past I've used and been pretty happy with K-9 and Kaiten but after using the new phone for a week I'm happy with the stock email program- seems just as good as the others for my basic needs. The phone itself... what a leap up from the other smart phones I've owned! It's a million times better than my last two phones- Droid X and Charge.
I'm actually having the same problem. I use the stock email app for my Hotmail account. It worked fine when I first got the phone, but now I never get notifications and even when I go in and hit the sync button, it will say "last synced at x:xx" but there won't be any new messages. But if I check my mail on my laptop, there's a ton of new messages.
I'd switch to K-9 if it wasn't so friggin ugly.
Sorry- that stinks. I'm still able to get my mail but only by manually hitting the sync button. I'm gonna go give Kaiten a try again since the native app is buggy.
Update- Kaiten apparently stinks now too. There's a beta out that everyone says is not good so I went with K-9. Installed and set up easily and got is syncing properly.

K-9 syncs automatically like it's supposed to. Looks like it's just a bug in the native app.

Have you tried that app? For ten bucks I'm gonna pass but I do appreciate the help and if there's another [free or at least only a few bucks... I'm cheap] mail app that works well I'd appreciate the pointer. Kaiten is apparently not great, K-9 works well but is ugly and the stock app is buggy. That's all I've tried so far.

I'll work my way thru some of these and see what I like. Tried Mail Droid and it was a little wonky for me. I installed Aqua and Emoze- will give them a try next.
AquaMail seems to be the best of the bunch. Haven't had a glitch since I started using it about 10 days ago. It's also, by a pretty big margin, the most customize-able so if you like like that it's well worth trying.

Are you looking for a more robust mail app?

The stock Samsung email app is OK but robust it is not. If you want more consider AquaMail Pro. Free trial and a few bucks to own. Very good looking and powerful. Keep all of your email addresses in one spot.
I have no connection to the app other than I own and like it.
K9 mail real good opensource mail client.

i like the Sammy Email but +1 on free and robust
I agree Aquamail is quite nice IMO. Did not take long for me to get the pro version... For couple bucks it is well worth it.... Knowing also how much work is required to access exchange via ews the app is in fact cheap... Only complain is no sync with Outlook contact and calendar AFAIK.
Thanks for the heads up on this app that deserves it.
Cloudmagic is great too

blue mail it's the best.... ????
If I require mail, contact and calendar sync with 3 Exchange accounts what is the best non stock email app for me to try? I have been hating the inaccurate notification style of the stock Samsung email app
Nine is my email app of choice. Plus it shows the exchange calendar in the stock calendar app.

+1 for Nine. I have been looking for a good Exchange Email App and when I found Nine I knew I hit gold! It is by far the best Exchange Email app around... and I have tried many.

If MS Exchange compatibility is your prioirity you cant beat Touchdown. It is not free however. But you can get a free trial to try it out. For me its well worth the price.
Yes, Cloudmagic. I just went through and tried most of them, and Cloudmagic I've been using for about a week. Aquamail did look good, I just didn't have the time to go through and learn all the functionalities of it. I'll probably give it another try once I'm able to spend more time learning it.

Definitely Blue mail is the go-to mail app, it is free Nd it is multiaccount with push notifications and looks great on the GTS
The new Gmail does all that and is free

But Gmail doesn't have push notifications
Is it only the included mailapp (and calendar) from Samsung that works with the tab after papergarden? I assume you know what I'm talking about, no? On videos from YouTube I believe the widgets covering the calendar and mail widgets are yellow and green.
If third party mail/calendar apps doesn't work together with said widgets, isn't it better to stick with the stock apps?
No way.. Blue mail is the one. They will repond quickly also if you send in ab issue. Plus its works constantly for push on mulitple accounts. Stock for some reason goes to sleep and emails come in up to 1 hour late. I thought google would have fixed the isue from note 3. Not every since they stopped supporting exchange mail settings 2 years ago.
who runs blue mail? There no info who they are?
I like mailbox, perfect for me.
type mail
It's fairly new but I love it I think it's better than aquamail pro, I have them both downloaded but I think Type Mail is alot faster. Did I mention completely free.
