Android phone advice needed - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully I have put this in the right thread.
My slight dilema is this....
I had a HTC Sensation, got bored and purchased a Nokia Lumia 800. Don't like the phone, don't like the OS and want to go back to Android. I only have a budget of between £200 - £250 to buy another phone and just wanted the opinion of the vast number of members on what phone to get within that price range.
Don't mind a used phone but don't want to go back to Sensation. The Galaxy SII is going over what I can afford so what's the next best thing? Needs to be loud!
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

The Optimus 2x (g2x on my side) is a diamond in the rough if you can find one.

you wanna ask yourself what you want from the phone too tbh. Personal preference for me is one with a hardware keyboard so i went for the desire Z. never looked back from it. works how i want it to and not had any issues unless i caused them myself hehe.

Managed to find myself a Galaxy S Plus for less than £200 in as new condition with an 8GB card, that'll do until my contract is up in July.
I have to admit, the Lumia 800 does have some nice features though, although my wife wasn't impressed when my phone read out a text through the car kit by my brother complaining about his internet connection, I however was rolling with laughter!!!
Thanks for the help anyway.

[Q] Is the amaze 4G a good phone to get?

Hi
Well I was wondering since I'm about ready for my Tmobile phone upgrade, I wanted to know if the amaze 4G is a good phone to have. I'm currently using the HTC Wildfire S and I want to get it out of my sight. Please comment if this is a good idea to get this phone before I upgrade. Thanks
Since you're so close to your upgrade you might want to wait for the One S.
If you can handle not being able to have a spare battery and SD card. You do get a s4 processor which should get better battery life and perform better also.

Yes but it's gonna be too expensive from the look of it. Also since the one s is going out, there is a good chance of the amaze prices to drop dramatically.
Well I just bought an amaze today, have to wait for it to come. Im not on post-paid and I don't feel like dropping $700 on a phone for he One S.
I probably would've waited if I had a contract. The Amaze is great so I hear.. will know in a few days.
I think its really down to your personal preference, an little older CPU with a SD card and spare batteries. Or a new CPU with no spare battery and 16gb locked.
I was tempted to wait, but ended with the Amaze.

Thanks for your opinion. Looks like I'm getting an amaze
I just brought my third amaze yesterday. Now my wife, daughter and I have one. Looked at a couple other options and weighing the pros and cons, the amaze came out on top, again

Amaze Hands down! i was considering Galaxy SII X but Amaze has better resolution, beter cameras (Front and back) even though its heavier imo it has a 'nicer' design. The cons are as follows:
-Weight
-Lack of Rom Development (We havent achieved S-OFF, and WIFI Drivers are a problem so i read)
-Screen Bleed at the capacitive buttons at the problem ... not a big deal its just at the bottom it will look brighter.)
-battery might suck on stock. For me im running stock and i get full 24 hour usage (phone calls, texting, tweeting, facebooking, browsing, music)
Pros: everything else

Thanks and im getting this phone
So how much did each of you pay when you first got it from tmobile?
i bought mine out right bnib for 380$
bought mine from a guy on xda for $360 with box in new condition. only thing messed up is the vibration (it rattles). that's it though
I don't regret buying it at all, I like the heft to it. it makes it feel expensive. the only other phone I wish I would have waited for is the xperia s which isn't much of a upgrade. considering it has the same processor and same amount of RAM, only huge plus is that its playstation certified and the design.
Mine was 350 with contract but if I would've waited one more week it would've Ben free but I don't care. I love my phone

im on a value plan, so i paid $625 minus $225 rebate. after tax it was like $430 or something. decent phone, lack of development knocks it down a few notches for me tho. when the s3 comes out, this phone is history

I love my amaze! Upgraded from the G2 so this phone is lighter compared to the G2. Ya support is low ATM but we have some good devs working on some AOSP ROM's. S-off is still down the road but I'm sure it will be obtained, once that happens and we have cm 9 running I'll bet people will be more interested in this device.
And I got mine for about 350 after the rebate and discount.

I'm sure there's quite a few other ones as well.
Hope these help you decide though.
And if those aren't enough here's what I think:
Personally I wouldn't buy any phone without a shutter button because it makes it that much easier for me to use.
The Amaze let's you go straight to camcorder or camera from the lock screen/off screen simply by holding down the corresponding button.
This works wonders for when I want to capture moments with my kids.
And the One S? No removable battery, no microSD card...what is it, an iPhone?
I think it's original production name was iphONE S.
Seriously, think about it. Lol.
Before you buy any phone check to see if there's a good developer community for it. What makes these smart phones smarter is solid development.
You're better off going for the s3. I know i am
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G
If sd card, removable battery, dedicated camera/camcorder button and NFC are important then you should go for the Amaze. On the other hand if none of that is important then I'd suggest going for the One S. From what I've seen, the One S has a pretty good developing community and HTC is currently supporting it as it's one of their flagship phones. While the Amaze is left in the dust sadly.

I agree. I went from the Amaze (well still have it as a backup) to the Galaxy Nexus, so I'm in your reverse situation. Honestly, the hardware of the Amaze is top notch, so in that regard you wouldn't be disappointed.
However, if you are looking for a variety of things to flash and robust development, the Amaze is really not a good phone to get. It's no fault of the few developers we do have, but more a lack of proper drivers and source thanks to HTC abandoning this device.
If development is important to you, go with the HTC One S (better processor, GPU and screen) or the SGS3 (better everything) when it comes out on the 21st. Both will have better dev communities since they are flagship devices.

HTC Amaze Speed Rom
i might try to get tmobile to send me one as a replacement device, or if someone wants to trade there one s for my amaze.
Purchasing either one right now is a poor consumer decision and would be very premature. I'm a fan of the Amaze, but not happy that HTC has abandoned it. I'd wait to play with the S3 and then weigh your options and decide what's most important to you.

International version?

There is someone local selling an unlocked international version on the GS2, with the physical button on the bottom. Is there any differences in the software between this and the TMO version? If I were to buy this, can I flash and root as if I were using the standard GS2?
thanks.
If that is the international version (namely i9100) then that is the standard sgs2. It had more development going on than the other versions of it.

I saw that, and read an article that kept talking about the Nexus 7. I had a G2X that a sold and picked up a Nexus S for $165. I don't like this damn phone, so I'll be promptly selling and using the profit for a top tier phone!
Does the S2 feel like the standard cheap Samsung while holding it? Or does it actually have some weight to it? Coming from LG's and HTC's, those things are heavy.
EDIT: The Galaxy Nexus is supposedly available again next week.

For me it is decent enough to look at and doesn't feel cheap even though it's light weight. Hmmm, you should decide whether you want a fast update (GNex) or better hardware buy slow update (Sgs2). Sgs2 is a great phone but samsung has the habit of updating a device for a year and then stop (not 1 year but you get the point). If i had the chance i would swap my sgs2 for GNex but i'm in doubt since i am a heavy user and i use my phone for gaming. Also, GNex lacks External SD card which is a No No for me.

I don't really care for the OTA's, I'll flash whoever put together a flashable version of whatever OTA is released...
I actually ordered a G. Skill 32gb SDHC Class 10 from newegg.com for my G2X, which I don't have anymore, now with the Nexus S, I have no use for the card! The SD write speeds on this phone are HORRIBLE, about 800k/sec!!!
I'm a fan of the non-carrier branded devices for some reason. My G2X had LG on the top instead of the traditional T-Mobile, and the screen hue while turned off was a brownish color instead of a blueish-gray that the TMO version had. I had one of each G2X's and in comparison, the screen for the LG branded was much more vibrant.
Now I have the Nexus S, again no branding, which is another reason why I want the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm confused, to say the least!
Well, if you don't care about updates then go for the international sgs2 (i9100). Great specs and still one of the best phone in the market.

The S3 is WAY to overpriced, I would just get that, but not willing to dish out around $500 for a non contracted phone.
Oh, another reason to stay away from the carrier branded for me, is that they won't get IMEI/ESN locked by which ever carrier!

Huh? i don't really care to receive Jelly Bean on the Nexus S, the DPI is atrocious on this phone. That, mixed with the screen type don't equal out to a good display. My G2X looked WAY better than this device.
The S2 will get a good Jelly Bean port before the Nexus S will, I'm sure of that.

Yeah it is sad to see, but Samsung is a monster when it comes to marketing budgets they had a slim chance to compete. I hope they pull through and continue pushing samsung and other Android devices to their limits. I have high hopes for this company
I also worry that articles like this will only hurt... people who are on the fence will read that and go with Samsung...
Personally I think they are going in the right direction getting rid of dead weight and poor performers.

Agreed. I've always had good experiences with call and signal quality with Nokia, from the 6820 and other TDMA phones back in the late 90s and early 00s to the Symbian-based stuff from a while back. If they put some quality Android-based phones together and offered them with a decent custom interface (like Sense) and unlocked, I think they'd make a pretty strong showing.

Ha, I have its big brother the Nokia 6800. That's not a typo, I still have it right here on my desk
I couldn't help but thinking that I have this power to kill phone manufacturers.
My first cell phone back in the mid 90s was the Siemens S3+ and then briefly the S4 (I bet not a lot of people here even know that Siemens used to make cell phones).
After that, I had a couple of Ericsson phones, the GH 337 and the GF 788 (you know how that story ends, they were swallowed by Sony, and then dumped).
Right after that, I became a huge Nokia + Symbian fanboy, the 6800, 6620, N80, E51, E63, E75 (and look at what happened to Nokia and Symbian).
Then three years ago I bought a Dell Streak (the first android phone with 5" screen that nobody really knows about. the following year, Dell stopped making phones).
Finally last week I got myself an HTC One. Look out HTC!!

I mostly agree with your statement, but I believe it will take more than one flagship to get them turned around and charging towards the front. Maybe after 1 or 2 more flagship they will really be doing well. I just can't see one phone having enough time to turn an entire company around. Especially after they bombed out hard with the HTC First. That was a huge mistake for them to try and even sell that phone.

It means that there will be a vanilla htc one or one like device and because of that the devs will (hopefully) be able to make aosp/aokp roms with very few to no bugs at all. Basically it's makes the job easier for the devs and the experience better for us.

Ever since I switched to Android, all I had were Samsungs...this is my first HTC android device and Im loving it so far. So to read articles about HTC and the tough times they're having is saddening. Samsung is the Apple of androids...the galaxy line is well known which is both bad and good. I really hope the HTC One can and will save this company because we need beautiful phones in the variety of androids. I like having choices!

Last night I dropped my phone out on the driveway, and the screen is now in a million pieces (well, not literally). HTC one isn't out on Verizon yet but I'd wait for that if I were you. Windows phone lacks customization for me personally and the gs4 is a gs3 only slightly better which is still not my cup of tea.

The HTC One is, in a lot of ways, what I wish my DNA was. You'll just have to wait a while for it... https://twitter.com/VZWnews/status/341592724161560578
The S4 is a very nice phone (as was the S3), it will have a different feel, but once you're past the learning curve it is great. The S4 Rugged might also be a decent option, especially if there is a chance you might break your phone http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=24447
The iPhone 5 is a great phone with a very different form factor and user experience (and if you're considering WPhone I would just go iPhone instead). Not good or bad, just different. I have tons of friends that love them, and I recommend them to lots of people.
If I were shopping it would come down to my subscription plan:
Grandfathered unlimited data - Buy the HTC One
Tiered Data - Buy the S4
