[Q] How to enable AMR-WB on ICS? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know how to enable AMR-WB on Stock ICS Firmware (LPQ)? In Gingerbread it was possible to change the status in the service menu *#*#197328640#*#* -> 5 (Audio) -> 7 (AMR-WB). On ICS it is just possible to see the that it is OFF but I can't change ist to ON.

I've got essentially the same problem.
I'm entering the service number, and getting the menu, but when I press on 5 for Audio, the screen appears to refresh but not change, and when I got to WB-AMR status everything is OFF.
I have a workmate with the same ROM on his phone (We're both using the stock XEU ROM, unrooted for the time being), and his settings are all turned ON.
He's unable to change his status to OFF though.
The key factor appears to be that my WB-AMR was most likely OFF before I upgraded and his was definitely ON before the upgrade.
Any idea what can be done to get it turned on?

I've got the same problem on mine. Doesn't matter which ICS rom I try using. Anyone got a workaround or a solution? This is really frustrating!

Don't know if this will help anyone, but VK rom lets me turn AMR WB on, and it works!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559009
First ICS rom I've tried that has this working, so I guess I'll be sticking with it.
Edit: After flashing a new modem I can no longer enable AMR WB. If I flash Gingerbread then restore any ICS backup however, I can access the AMR WB setting. Weird.

What was your previous modem? KI3? Doesn't work on LPX

KL1 according to the phone. You have to flash a GB rom first (I used checkrom from memory), set AMR to enabled, wipe, then flash an ICS rom.

I'm wondering if it does some sort of auto detect in ICS now? I know Telstra support AMR.

I hadn't seen it work until the other day when I flashed Checkrom (GB), so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that. I had no issues before the last few ICS releases with Telstra's HD Voice. Either way, it's pretty annoying. I wonder if Telstra's ICS rom works with it? They advertise the phone as having HD voice, so you'd hope so.

As far as I'm aware it should be this ROM Telstra rolled out for ICS ->
I9100TDVLP4/I9100TTELLP2/I9100TDVLP3/I9100TDVLP4

I'm not on the Telstra network right now and I can't find a rooted copy of this rom to try. I'm wondering if just have the modem and CSC would work...

I'd tried a few Telstra modems without any luck, regardless of rom (apart from the Telstra ones). The only way I've got the audio menu to work is flashing a GB rom first, then going to an ICS one.

I just tried XXLPB and it appears to let me enable wb-amr - haven't been able to test it works though by calling another phone with it enabled.
It was strange because I tried the LD3 modem that came with stock Bell Canada firmware it had a slightly different service menu but wouldn't let me enable it. So I look at other countries with WB-AMR enabled carriers and tried Orange's latest modem.

It's weird, I flashed the latest CM9 yesterday and am running the LPX modem, lo and behold WBAMR is on and working. No idea what changed it, but it's on when I check in the service menu and I can definitely hear that it's on when I call my partner. I still can't press audio in the service menu to change it though.

I've never got service mode to work with CM9? How did you get to it?
It could have something to do with this commit? https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/ae1cbf3a6be031aacc33f1f8f090b9e5e53e27ed
FYI: On WanamLite with LPB I can edit it and change the value.

Works fine with the normal keys, does yours show as on?
That commit does look like it should have sorted it though.

My phone can't find any wireless network?

Since I installed Cyanogen ROM 7.1, my 5500 can't find any wireless network.None of them are listed on my phone!?(like there's no wireless signal around). Tried with different fixes, different ROM-s.. When I was on stock ROM everything was OK.When I go to settings-turn on wireless it says 'Activity Wi-Fi settings (in application settings) is not responding'. and have force close and wait choice. Also in advanced settings says MAC and IP address Unavailable. Any suggestion? Thanks!
What Baseband are you using?
Go to Settings > About Phone and go to the 'Baseband Version' section.
Try finding your baseband on this website, and see if it is recommended for Cyanogenmod:
http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/basebands/
If it is not there or is considered BAD, then download an OK one from your region. (Being from Europe, I am using the I5500NEJP2, which just so happens to be from my own Irish network provider)
I've just changed it from I5500LUYJPE to I5500NEJP2 and still nothing!
Still can't see any wireless signal around..
Try reflashing, or going back to stock just to see if the wifi still actually works
Sent from my GT-I5500 using Tapatalk
Can you help me with the 'back to stock' link? Should I do it with Odin..?
Yeah, flash the file with odin. There's 2 files you hace to flash, but I can't remember where the other one is

I'm running the same kernel and everything is ok for me.
All I can tell you is to reinstall Cyanogenmod and the hotfix again. But be sure to do a data wipe first, and clear your dalvik cache by going into 'Advanced'. Then install the rom.

How to turn to 3g/hsda only, no edge on ICS 4.0.3

At first, I used 2.3 honey comp ROM for my vibrant. I had an option that use HSDA/3g only, then the icon never turned to E, only 3g and H appears.
A few days ago, I updated my vibrant to 4.0.3, I couldn't find the previous option any where, and the icon keep changing between E/3g/H.
In addition, when i use rom 2.3 and turn on Mobile Ap: It worked great like a charm.
When I changed to 4.0.3, the speed of mobile AP is really slow and not stable.
Any helps are appriciated.

Seems to me that when you switched the roms the modems changed ( as usually happens). Did you notice what is your new modem under baseband. If you remember the baseband version which you used on your 2.3 honey, you could flash it here and it might solve your data problem.
usually different modems have different sensitivity to the different signal strengths. in case of a weaker signal strength a particular modem might switch from 3g whereas a different modem might stick to 3g at a lower signal strength too.

I have not tried that. In the link below you will find the modems which are ics compatible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783&highlight=bootloaders
All you have to do is download your choice of modem ( depending on your location) and put it on your SD card. For convenience sake put it in the phone sd card directly and not in any folder. then
1) reboot into recovery
2) select install zip from sdcard/ internal sdcard
3) choose zip file of the modem
4) yes
let it do its thing. Then reboot and check in the settings under baseband.
PS: since the rom that you are using now does not give you the option to select 3g only, even the new modem will switch to E in areas of very weak 3g reception. Just FYI.

what im looking for is the option "Network Preference" on 2.2 and 2.3, on any ICS Rom, it disappears then. I downloaded an app from market called 3g only but it is not strong enough, the gsm still change to E icon.
Anymore way to get WCDMA only?

I just dont like to use MIUI 4. I flashed it for 30 mins and then kicked it out of my phone. Cyanogenmod 7 brings me a smoother UI and long battery life.
Just wait a few week for the ICS Rom bugs fixed and then i'll try. I'd love to use ICS, it has such an really amazing UI.

One more suggestion.
If you install Doc's Master ICS v5, in that there is an inbuilt app called as galaxy S settings in the app drawer, wherein under radio you can select HSPDA only (3g only). Although I am not quite sure if it works because i don't have 3G on my plan. However the ICS rom works great otherwise and probably might solve your AP issue too. (Fingers crossed)
Great Tip
Thanks a lot, i was going mad with the phone keep going back to 2g.
Apparently, someone had an app to do the switching, but I couldn't download it because the attachment is gone or something.

[Q] Reception / antenna problems (GetRIL)

hello fellow xdas
while back i had gotten my hands dirty with the CM10 project as i just couldn't wait for the official update! i learned quickly that i had serious problems with antenna/reception. i tried carious base bands (as recommended on forums) using GetRil/flash.Odin. this didnt seem to help, even though i would get better reception, my signal was unstable. In the process i tried other roms like JellyBam and had the same issue.
As this is my main phone and i do actually need to call with it, i went back to the stock rom i downloaded. but surprisingly i still have the same issue! GetRil also shows that i have incompatible RIL/baseband. this is what it shows:
RIL: I9100NELP2; I9100XXKI4
Baseband: I9100XXLPQ
FYI: i am located in the Netherlands and use T-mobile network.
so have i installed the wrong ROM or done something wrong in the process... ? does anyone have any experience with this? i much rather have CM10 but only if i can get to call normally once again?
thanks

thanks a lot zee54,
can i just go back to my CM10 or JellyBam, install the above mentioned radios and get everything working? or does it depend on the RIL which that ROM is running! I have tried a number of modems when i had CM10, but dont know if i tried those... i did try BVLP7 for sure

The modem is independent of the ROM, mate. So it wont make much of a difference whether you install the radio on stock firmware or on CM10. You could try using the modems mentioned by zee54 with CM10 and seeing if it helps. Also, give it about a day or so..since the phone tends to take a while to get 'used' to a new modem.

The unstable signal or "RIL Crash" as it it called isn't actually caused by having an incompatible RIL and Baseband (modem). It is a more complicated issue which I don't fully understand myself. But what I do know is that it currently affects all customs roms that are based on CM10 and use the CM Kernel. So switching modems might help recude the frequency of the problem but probably won't irradicate it completely.
You should not experiencing this problem if you go back to stock samsung firmware. If you experience problems you might want to do a full wipe (Data, Cache, Dalvic-cache) before reflashing and fix permissions afterwards.
On a more positive note, I have found that using the Siyah Kernel with your custom rom does seem to eliminate this problem, or at least reduce it occurance to such that I have not noticed it happening.
So personally i would suggest that if you wish to go back to CM10 or JellyBam ROMs, then do so but also install the latest Siyah Kernel for the S2 from here http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
(Here's the XDA Thread for the Siyah Kernel - [KERNEL] SiyahKernel v4.1.5 (v5.0a2))
I am currently running CM10 with the Siyah Kernel v5.0b2 and it is working very nicely
great stuff guys... 2x thanks for both of you!
Zeey54, i just had Siyah v5 Kernal installed, installing the latest JellyBam right now! so lets see what happens. i was suspecting that beside the RIL/baseband there were other factors as i did not see any significant difference between them. but then again i dont trust my judgement on such issues as my knowledge is quite limited.
will send an update with the result after installation in a few min.

installed the BOLP7 modem, overall reception is much better! data connectivity is also better and faster. but i still have some periods which my receptions drops and goes back up, seems like radio/modem crash (if im right). dont know if that is due to the kernel or modem or ...?
the reason i went for BOLP7 modem was because the latest official stock rom from t-mobile Netherlands was I9100BOLPM_I9100TNLLP8_I9100BOLP7, so i thought that would be the best one to try!
will wait a little more to see if this improves as the modem settles.
4th official ROM too much coverage you please make a review ?
need modem
First of all, thank you mate for your hardwork and awesome utility.
I have a Samsung galaxy S2 I9100G , recently flashed jelly bam custom rom. I am based in Saudi Arabia, the reception is not clear and people complain that it is switched off or out of network. I tried calling with another mobile and i got a response that my mobile is switched off, at the same time i checked my S2 mobile , it shows the full signal of the network in status bar.
what should i do? Which modem should i flash. the getRIL shows RIL/baseband is matching (I9100GDDLP5).
cheers
Rizwan
