[Q] Rezound will not boot - HTC Rezound

I unlocked and rooted my HTC Rezound using hasoon2000's all-in-one tookit v2.0 and was running cleanROM.
I am currently in a 'bootloop'. The phone will boot to the first white HTC screen without the red writing on the bottom and then it will turn completely black and will not go any further. I can boot in the hboot and recover AmonRa 3.15.
I factory reset the internal storage and nothing happened. I then reset the sd card and still no luck whatsoever.
I cannot get the phone to recognize on my laptop to relock the bootloader and am afraid verizon might notice..
I shaking and sweating a little bit, i don't want to be without a phone..
any help would be fantastic.
I would like to know how to get out of this bootloop and possibly reset back to factory settings.

going to need more info first:
1. does it say you have an unlocked bootloader?
2. you will need to take your sd card out of the phone, plug it into a pc, and download a rom, and place it on the sd card.
3. which hboot are you running at this point in time.

Will it boot if you take the sim card out? Try that
Sent from my Rezound

maybe try reflashing

I seem to be having the exact same problem- I can reboot into recovery and flash recovery and/or a new rom, boot into bootloader and flash boot.img, but still get stuck at white htc screen.
I had just finished a 45 minute tech call to Verizon, put the phone down for about 15 min, picked it back up to unlock and it froze. Would not respond to adb commands, finally pulled battery to reboot and bootlooping at white htc screen. Flashed both BAMF 2.1, earlier ICS backup, and factory reset from recovery.
Anyone have a suggestion as to next step? Flash RUU (I did update to 3.xx) again?
Thanks for any thoughts

Stuck at white HTC screen
I rooted my Rezound and flashed Amon. I made the mistake of trying to flash a Cyanogen ROM and now I'm stuck at the HTC white screen. I have no idea what to do from here. I can get into reecovery and fastboot. What are my options? Thanks for any help!

It sounds like there is no kernel. Try flashing sebastians kernel if ICS, Incredikernel if GB.

Thank you SO much! I'm going onto day 2 without my phone and it isn't fun! I flashed the kernel for Cyanogen as well as the ROM but clearly that didn't end well. Where can I find these kernels?
EDIT: Found Incredikernel. Will let you know if it works.

Thats what we are all here for. S-Off makes flashing so much easier since it actually flashes the kernel the same time you flash the rom and when you make a backup it will actually save the kernel with the backup as well. Well worth it.

Good to know about S-Off... I'm all about making the process of flashing easier. I'll take a look at S-Off tomorrow after work. What are the best instructions in your opinion?

This is what I did that ended with me being bootlooped in the first place:

Need help ASAP

Alright i need help badly. I consider myself an advanced noob in installing roms and kernals on a phone. I have the rezound. I unlocked it about a week about and went through the step by step instructions. I installed ziggys kernal. I was getting some bootloops but not to many until this morning. My phone kept bootlooping. I would take the battery out and put it back and it would do it again. I tried wiping the date cache and dalvik. Nothing. I then formatted all to ext3. After i did that it said i need to install a rom. I try to restart my phone and it just stays on the HTC screen. I tried to do the factory restore. Nothing. I have to put my sd card in after i get into recovery because when i go to the bootloader screen the HBOOT does something and then asks me if i want to do an update. I tried and hit yes and it did it then reboots but nothing. When i hit no it just wants me to reboot my phone, which does nothing for me. As it is right now my phone wont load. it just stays on the HTC screen. HELP please

The other half of the problem is that it sounds like he formatted ext3 and wiped his ROM. So, he'd have to reboot back into recovery and restore a backup or drop a new ROM on the phone via USB.
Grab the RUU and start all fresh again.

This is one of the reasons I have not tried to hack this device. Although I may unlock/root my Rezound I'm not in a hurry to. It's really a great device. Just too expensive for me to maybe mess up. Especially since its our own fault if we do. Can't blame the carrier/manufacturer for not paying to fix/replace either. Hopefully you get it fixed soon. I know I wouldn't want to have to go through all that either.

The answer should be in the CleanRom thread but as far as I know if you flashed Ziggy's Kernel, you should reflash it and that should solve the problem.

It shouldn't. You can't brick with unlock S-On. If you can get to HBOOT, you are fine. And there is no way to overwrite HBOOT yet.

And does it need to be said that this phone has been out for less than a month? Maybe we should give the devs a chance to work out the kinks before we start flashing.
I *really* miss WiFi tethering that I used to do with my DInc, but I am not about to root in the first two weeks of ownership before I see good, dependable feedback from the community.

Not trying to knock you but I don't see the point in waiting. Flashing a rom is fairly straightforward and even flashing kernels is for the most part. I had an Incredible prior to this and I am absolutely in love with my phone...that's why I read how to do things properly and learn from others mistakes.

There is a wifi tether app that doesn't require root. Koush is the dev. I tried it and it worked. That was the only thing I would have needed root for also. You should be able to find it if you search for it. If not, I'll find the link.

[Q] Switching between roms?

Hi guys,
Im new to the rezound but flashed several different froyo/GB roms on my DX so I know basics but Im a little lost between flashing between roms on the rezound since there are kernals and other stuff that was rarely messed with on the DX. Not to mention the DX had a linux iso to flash to OTA froyo and GB which would be nice if someone did that for the rezound, would deffinetly be worth a donation!
Im currently on Scotts cleanrom 4.3 standard. I unlocked the bootloader with the htc coded and have the amon ra recovery installed, and when i flashed the rom i installed the patch, then flashed the ph98img file (ph98img is a kernal?). I tried going to rezrom v3.4 earlier today and once I finished setup I would go into a bootloop. It was sense 3.6 so I didnt think there were animations to disable or anything weird, Im not sure I missed a step or used the wrong file. I ended up just flashing back to cleanrom till I figure this stuff out.
So how would I go about switching to other ics roms, what do I need to worry about/look out for in regards to compatability?
Also What do I need to do to go back to stock so I can get the OTA ics when it comes out (if I even want to)? I did do a nand backup and some backups with titanium pro but I just hope I saved the right stuff.
Thanks for any help!!

That is a lot of questions, but I'll answer what I know:
(ph98img is a kernal?): It can be several things, so you just need to know what you are installing. In this case it was probably a firmware patch.
I tried going to rezrom v3.4 earlier today and once I finished setup I would go into a bootloop: You will need to install the RezROM patch after you install the ROM. It will fix the bootloop.
So how would I go about switching to other ics roms, what do I need to worry about/look out for in regards to compatability?: Read the instructions in each ROM's OP. It will tell you what is compatible and what you will need to do to make it work well. There may be issues going back and forth from ICS to GB, but usually the instructions will give you a heads up. In any case, ALWAYS do a nand backup before flashing.
What do I need to do to go back to stock so I can get the OTA ics when it comes out (if I even want to)?: I believe there is a thread on this. I haven't done it, so I can't help on this question.
Good luck!

You can't flash it backwards and you can't go back to a factory-locked bootloader, but other than that the RUUs accomplish the same thing as a DX SBF.

PH98IMG.ZIP is a reserved filename. If you boot to the firmware menu the Rezound will automatically flash anything in a file by that name in the root of the SD card. Apparently HTC uses different numbers in the file name reserved on each phone, and the Rezound is "98". Other than that, there's no telling what's in the file -- it can be a huge ROM or just a tiny kernel patch.

Easiest way is to flash the leaked ICS RUU. I think in your case you have to actually extract the PH98IMG.ZIP file and flash it manually. And while that's supposedly a release candidate, it's still having a few problems with battery life and heat, so you might not want to flash it till the OTA you want is actually released.
Thanks for the help guys, that helped
Ugh... I had those exact same problems and questions and I even came from the DX.. HTC is so complicated. I'm frustrated with not being able to flash any other roms other than Scott's CleanRom.. The Ph98img.zip file always makes me reboot the phone and when I do delete it and get back to recovery, I am always in a bootloop mode with BAMF and RezRom.

I don't know about BAMF, but with RezROM, you just need to flash the patch in his post, after getting rid of the PH98IMG file. That will cure your bootloop problem.

Just use the search on this site and type in how to remove ph98img.zip . Only reason I say that is because there are a few threads about the issue and a few different techniques. Easiest, I just used my old OG droid to remove the file if I bootlooped. If you don't have an old phone, using a cheap card reader pop it into that and remove the file. Booting into recovery if you can get into it , then mount the card and remove file.
Like I said , not trying be an ass telling you to search I just can't recall all the different ways.

Also , another way to switch between roms. If you make a nandroid of the roms and use Con's nandroid recovery helper http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547496
Posted here and then follow directions in using it and you can then "swap roms without having to restore the kernel separately.

I've read where there are ways to do this via adb commands, but what I've had to do lately is simply pull the SD card and either put it into a reader or another cell phone, delete the file, then put it back into my phone, boot into recovery, and then flash the patch. I know, it's a PITA, but until we install the new firmware, that's just the way it is.
the way that i do it is hold the battery partially out so you can start it with the sd card partially out... boot into bootloader and click recovery.... then you can push the sd back in... next while in amon ra go to developer menu and select the delete phimg option.
yes this can be tricky but it works when you dont have a sd adapter
This is what I'm running right now and I'm not too happy with it. And also to add that I am unable to launch a few apps and sync contacts pictures to GoSMS.

evo lte stuck at "quietly brilliant" screen. cant get to recovery

I was rooted on MeanROM, and from TWRP I cleared the cache and delvic cache and did a factory wipe, then tried to install the cm10 nightly build, but it said failed, so I cleared and wiped again and tried installing the FreshEVO ROM that I had on it before the MeanROM, it never finished installing, just froze after a while. then TWRP restarted then went into the white HTC "quietly brilliant" screen with the red disclaimer and stuck there. When i hold the power down, it just reboots back to this screen. I cant get it into recovery or bootloader or anywhere but this. My computer isn't recognizing the phone, I tried to adb to it from cmd but its not showing up. I don't think i had the latest hboot or whatever on it, it's been probably two months since i first rooted it. any help would be great, please and thank you. I'm heading to work but i'll check this on my breaks and answer any questions i can about what ive done. I was about to trade the phone for an s3 this saturday, but im sure he wont want it like this! THANK YOU.
I'm just gonna say this and don't take it offensively... That is the risk you took rooting your phone.. if you can get into bootloader, try loading a current ruu on there and see If that works.

No offense taken, I understood the risks, and I accept the consequences, which is why I'm fairly calm and not freaking out. I'm going to read more into RUU's on my break, as I'm not completely sure how to do that. Does the computer have to recognize my device for that? I would think so. Is there a trick to getting from this white HTC screen back to TWRP other than trying to reboot or pwr+vol down? Everything just keeps going back here. It wont even turn off without the battery draining.. I'll keep reading on my break, any other helpful comments are definitely welcome. Thanks.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds and the lights on the capacitive buttons will blink. As soon as the screen goes black wait about half a second then hold volume down and power to get into bootloader then go into recovery.
Hope that helps you. That's how I've always gotten back into recovery when I have a bad flash.

did you ever get this going? Sounds like from what i was seeing you got into your BL finally. I would try reinstalling TWRP like the second part of the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794867 and then select reboot to recovery from the bootloader ot the button method. If you get back into twrp restore the last working rom setup you had which sounds like meanrom. If it works come back and let us know.

did you ever get this going? Sounds like from what i was seeing you got into your BL finally. I would try reinstalling TWRP like the second part of the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794867 and then select reboot to recovery from the bootloader ot the button method. Hey guys, on my lunch break, i got it working! I couldn't get it to go into recovery last night for the life of me, but i tried this morning on my way to work and it worked just fine like it should. For some reason none of my roms would install though other than the jewel stock of the latest update with root that i had on here. It worked and I'm good to go. Thanks for the help though! Anyone know why the roms that i installed before are falling Everette i try to install them now? I always wipe and restore first..

I'm willing to bet that you are not S-OFF, and on Hboot 1.15 or higher, and that was the issue when you tried to install CM10. Make sure you read the instructions for flashing CM10, because you have to do something special to flash a kernel when you are S-ON. Now, as far as the old roms not being able to flash, it may be that they were based on the original 1.13 software version with the 1.13 kernel, and it won't let you flash over your current kernel because the version is older. Essentially, if you are S-ON, you can't flash a kernel unless it matches or is a newer version than the one you have. Of course, you can follow one of the many guides on how to flash boot (kernel) with S-ON to get around this.

Wow yes this all made perfect sense! I didn't think about my old roms not being compatible, and i also didn't realize i needed s-off for cm10. I have a bad habit of thinking i can just throw a zip on my card and flash it and it will magically work perfectly lol.. This kind of thinking is what gets me into trouble! Where can i read about turning s-off for installing cm10? Are there links on the download page?

S-OFF info is here, but because you are having this issue, you probably have HBoot 1.15 or higher, which means you can't achieve S-OFF until a new exploit is found.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737123
There are methods for flashing kernels here with S-ON here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794867
Also, there's the newer twrp dumlock method if you install the latest version ot TWRP (2.2.1). http://teamw.in/project/htcdumlock

You dont have to have s-off though like he said for cm-10 you just need an extra step or two. I dont blame you for trading it in I did the same. Except I am going back to the Gnex.

Well I'm going back cuz of the non htc clustscrew and the openess of the platform. No bs no s on or s off dev unlocks etc...its how a phone should be. Better camera functionality and I know the sammy platform. Imho it may be older but its a far superior device. Could afford any device out there and to me its hands down gnex

right on. I did enjoy that phone. I LOVE the camera on my EVO LTE though, that's the one thing ill miss about this one. I did just find out that the ass that was supposed to trade me on saturday already traded someone, so i'm stuck with the LTE for a while now, so i might venture into putting cm10 on it, but then again i might wait til a more stable version hits, just depends on how long that may take..

Ruu it back to stock locked and ebay it. Should get enough for nib sealed gnex. I found one for 319.00. Saw a couple s3 on swappa for about 430-440 nib sealed. Saw a bad esn one going for 290ish so yours should be 350ish or more

CM10 should be going completely open source with the camera very soon. Expect good things.
To the people complaining about HTC and leaving/trading for new phones.... cya.
That isnt helpful here... we dont need an announcement. Just go please.

help! in dire need of assistance!!

ok,
So like an idiot, i began the S-OFF process without reverting my SuperCID. I cannot get past step 8, and i am having errors flashing my RUU.
Right now i cannot get past the bootloader. If i try to fastboot reboot, it takes me back to the bootloader. If i try a reboot, it takes me back to the bootloader.
Is there something that i can flash to get me back and running? I have tried numerous things, and i really need my phone back tonight. Grandfather is in the hospital, and i have no way to contact anyone except through facebook / email.
does anyone have some ideas, or know what i need to do? I honestly dont care about root or s-off, i can do that later. Right now i just need a bootable phone.
help!

right, i tried this and had no success. the bootloader went through the process, and began to load the file, but did not finish the process. Could i possibly have tried flashing the wrong one?
i know this is something simple that i can flash, but it is not working

i tried using the one from unlimited.io, renaming it to PJ53IMG, but it would not flash... in theory that would do the trick right?
i am trying to download the file again, we'll see if that works. possibly corrupted on my end

Probably not. Use the one provided in Andy's thread. ADB is probably not working because debugging has been turned off.
Have you tried the recovery? Check to see if that works. If not try to fastboot a recovery. The command is "Fastboot flash recovery". Try with TWRP. If that takes then try to flash a ROM with that.

the link in andy's thread is busted, or i would. unless i am wrong.. have you tried it?
On my side ill say do what the ther said, if you still have supercid you can unlock device and flash recovery and flash a working rom if you want it booteable

I'm a complete n00b to rooting and have been trying to find an answer to the same question before diving in. I have looked through tons of info, including the 2 threads posted in responses, but can't seem to get a clear answer as to whether these methods work for 2.07... There seems to be a lot of conflicting reports. Would love to know if you confirm that either of these work.
May have answered my own question
It looks like there are further reports of moonshine working on 2.07.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2510910
I'm going to give it a try tonight and will report back here.
I haven't seen anything about unlocking or rooting on 2.07, only s-off. I have a new DNA being shipped out thanks to my warranty, but I really don't want to go back to 4.1 after being on 4.3 for a few great months!

Yep, sorry for mixing up unlocking and rooting with s-off. I just thought getting s-off would better for a n00b like me as it seems to make the custom ROM / kernel process a bit more straight forward.

I tried last night and ran into a few problems and then ran out of time. Got an error along the lines of [can't obtain temproot] during one of the moonshine steps... This may be due to the fact that I did not factory reset before moonshining. I will try again this evening (after factory reset).
Do you know I should go through the normal phone set-up after the factory reset? Or just reset then dive into moonshine?
Thanks!

I'd think factory reset everything. I believe that is what I done. There is a support page for the moonshine program but I forget where it was.

Well, I can 100% confirm that moonshine works for 2.07. It took several tries (4 to be exact, with factory reset between each), but I am now s-off! Woohoo! Now on to flashing twrp, and my first try at a custom ROM.

Thanks for the offer! I was actually able to flash twrp and a custom ROM. It was much easier than I originally anticipated. My eyes are now open to a whole new world... Not sure I'll ever be able to go back to a stock Stock/manufacturer ROM.
Now running ViperDNA 2.0.1. I picked Viper as it sounds like this is one of the most stable/least buggy ROMs out there right now (plus it runs fine on the stock kernel). Do you have any other suggested ROMs for the DNA?

Looks good.
I too just had success with Moonshine. Just literally got my DNA, previous owner took the OTA. First time failed at "temproot", second time ran flawless.
Congratulations if u need help installing. SDK. Adb. Fastboot. Recovery and or a ROM. Message me

Well, still troubleshooting some things. Successfully had root access and using the correct settings I could run wireless tether fine. I then proceeded to backup then install viper Rom. Set everything up fine however nothing I tried would get tether going. So I restored my backup (tether is a must) and still same issue. It starts but I cnt connect which is strange as I was using it fine earier.
So now I did a factory reset and flashed superuser, now tether won't start. Says "started with errors" using the exact same settings. So I'm going to try flashing the stock ota deodedex Rom see if that solves it.
