(ICS) No WiFi with WiFi Tether? only 4G? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I can't believe I'm the only person to experience this.
Steps to recreate the issue:
Follow steps to remove flag using SQL Lite (Entitlement = 0)
Turn on WiFi connection and wait for it to connect
Lauch WiFi Tether 3.1 pre11 beta
Watch WiFi connection get turned OFF AUTOMATICALLY
Watch 4G LTE Turn on AUTOMATICALLY
Watch Verizon profit
Why??? Are we just not able to tether via wifi ? why is it called wifi tether? You mean 4G Tether right?
Also just tired FoxFi Tether and what do you know? WiFi mode has failed on your phone. Please use Bluetooth? LOL what is this garbage? is this a Verizon/Motorola thing?
Have never, ever seen this happen on HTC/Samsung phones.
Anyone pls?

ok, my first flame of the month: please take a logic 101 course, then reread your question. thank you!

Hey I even thanked you for attempting.
Regardless I would like to Tether using my WiFi connection and not Verizon's 4G.
Thanks! Anyone else care to take a stab at outsmarting me?

I don't. I just can't understand why it won't work? Does your phone turn off wifi?
It shouldn't. It should let me run tether through my net connection or any damn connection I choose, not Verizon. Yet it keeps turning it off. Turning off my connection. It's odd, strange. I feel like I'm being controlled and oppressed by "the man!"
First phone I've encountered that forces Wifi off (a perfectly good connection) to switch over to 4G/3G. I just find it strange.
I'm new to Motorola phones, well I had the v120c in 2000 So far they're quite strange compared to HTC/Samsung.

Okay well first off... I don't know why you did the SQL edit because you're using a third party app anyway.
Secondly... I can't name a phone where you can tether a WiFi connection into another hotspot... There'd just be no point. Your connection will always be equal to or worse than your phone's, so you might as well just connect directly.

You're talking about internet pass through. Where it takes an existing connection whether it be wifi or 3G/4G and let a device use that for internet. What you're doing is data wifi tethering. Where it turns off your wifi radio and turns your phone into an access point so other can connect it and use your 3G/4G data to connect to the internet.

This program enables tethering (via wifi) for "rooted" handsets running android (such as the Android DevPhone 1). Clients (your laptop for example) can connect via wifi (ad-hoc mode)and get access to the internet using the 3G, 2G mobile connection which is established by the handset.

WiFi Tether does exactly what it says it does.
If you want to use your phone as a WiFi share to connect a computer that doesn't have WiFi then you'll need something like PdaNet instead.

Wifi tether uses your phones data connection to the carrier as the source and tethers another device using the phones wifi radio. This is the definition of wifi tether.
None of the aftermarket apps will work. The only way I've got this to work is using the SQL hack and using the native wifi hotspot app.
To use your device in this fashion the wifi radio must drop its connection to your wifi router, connect to 4g or 3g and convert the internal wifi radio into a wireless hotspot. This is normal behavior.
What your referring to is internet pass through as was previously mentioned

It sounds like he wants his phone to rebroadcast whatever wifi network he's connected so other devices can connect to it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

From what it sounds like, perhaps he is wanting to share a protected wifi network using an unprotected hotspot? *shrug*

Perhaps he wants his phone to be like a USB wireless adaptor that connects to a wifi ap and not use 4g? (kinda want to know how to do that myself). I was able to with no problem on a g2x
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

Just to test it out the capacity, tempreture etc. That's all. Never had a phone that forces WiFi off when you try to share the connection, even though, it's logical since you would need a connection in the 1st place.
I've since found out this can't be done on this phone.

FoxFi - "WiFi mode has failed on your phone"
If i am not mistaken, he is trying to use his pnone as a WiFi hotspot, using FoxFi (same as i am trying to do) using his data plan, but FoxFi does not seem to be working. I have the exact same issue, wheter using WiFi or Bluetooth, my laptop can not connect.
Any ideas?

Try Fox-fi again its been updated to work with the RAZR update. Worked like a charm.

Droid Razr -not Rooted
ICS OTA
Foxfi will NOT work on my Razr. I've deleted, uninstalled, reinstalled and still NOTHING.
Some folks insist it works, well, it may on their phone, but NOT on mine.
I have 2 Razrs in the house, and it fails on both. All it does is suggest Bluetooth, and that fails, too!!!!
Any or all help is so very much appreciated. Paying for 4gb data, and only use 1gb is kind of silly. I continue to pay because new share plan would cost more.
Thanks!

Actually how about a router that's running wpa2 and a PSP that only supports wpa? My other radio on my router is 5GHz which my phone can't see. So wifi tether makes sense. I'm forced to use my mobile connection because wifi turned off.

[Q]Why is tethering so slow??

On my phone I get 15-20mbps on speak easy speed test
When I use googles android wifi tether or the verizon app I get 1mbps down
What gives? It seems lie the tether app is using 3g instead of 4g
I have tried wifi tether and the hotspot app and both have the same issue
I also searched and others are having the same problems but no solutions posted.
Anyone get wifi tether to use the 4g instead of the 3g? please post how
Yea same here.I've searched the Net looking for an answer but no luck.I even tried flashing different radios but no luck either...
I did that there's a WiFi tether beta but who knows how long before they get it working with 4g, not to mention make it compatible with every phone and network out there.

heh. i go to the library often and will occasionally want to play Left 4 Dead online. problem is, the library's wifi is super slow and regularly disconnects.... so i will use pdanet to my laptop. theres no 4g in my area but at least the 3g is stable enough to keep me connected and my ping averages 200 - 300. sometimes itll jump as high as 700(which really sucks) but im at least surprised that the 3g can even do that.
So nobody has figured out why tethering only uses 3g instead of 4g????
Just figured I'd let you know that I let a guy tether his iPhone (just to show him LTE) to my Tbolt recently and he got 12dn/3up using the built-in tethering hotspot in CM7 (he ran the Speedtest.net app on his iPhone).

It's not a universal problem. It sounds like a "just you" problem and maybe a few others. LTE works fine for me and I get 1.5-2 Megabytes per second on it with CM7.

Well, it's not "just you". My phone won't USB tether if I have "LTE" radio selected. If I just select EVDO, then it will tether. Running OMGB.

Not everyone is having the problem. Seems to only be a handful of people.
I'd say if you're running cm7 and you messed with the radio settings other than just using the toggle for 3g and lte/3g auto, that is why your tethering is not working. Don't mess with those and dont force it to LTE only.
Anyone ever figure this out?
I'm running stock rooted Galaxy Nexus and I'm having the same problem. No matter what method I use to tether it seems that the tether switches to the 3g radio after a few seconds of turning it on.
I know this is a TB thread, but I have the same problem so it must not be a TB issue...
Everyone posting is running aosp roms, could that be the issue? On shiftsense i get 10-15 down with pings around 100. I also use the wifi tether fix i posted in the general threads. Ive flashed the newest radios, but never change the settings for lte/cdma.

I want to add another data point. I can tether to my android device and get about the same speeds I get on the phone. However, when I tether to a windows machine the speed is extremely slow <1mbps u/d. The only way to get better speeds on the PC is to run filterproxy on the phone. It's still about 35-50% of the bandwidth of the phone but a little better. Could this be related to like a MTU size on the PC or something timing out when being routed from the PC through the phone?

I tried it on a photon running 198-7, flashed fresh this afternoon, rooted, unlocked bootloader with CWM applied. No go. FoxFi appears to initiate the stock hotpot app which in turn results in the IP registration error you get when launching the stock app. Tried with wifi on, but not connected, and with wifi off both suggested as troubleshooting steps by FoxFi.
Curious what others are experiencing using a blur rom
yea it will give taht error, but from what ive seen let it sit for 3-4 mins and it will finally re-register

I have also made the connection on my Photon at 3g speeds. Is there anything at all that can be done to make it work at 4G speeds. My 4G does not disconnect when I am using it as a mobile hotspot. It appears that it is the FoxFi app and not the actual phone causing this issue.
Moto Photon Foxfi only in 3G mode and Alternative 4G tethering
I too believe that it is FoxFi that is causing the disconnection in the 4G signal when trying to activate it on the Motorola Photon (MB855). An alternative would just to grab your USB cable connect your laptop directly to your phone and get PdaNet app (I know this works on Windows with an Android Phone) and you can connect to the 4G. (with great speed too, I have gotten 1+ MB/s downstream) It's not wireless but at least it won't kill your battery and you can charge your phone at the same time!
And if you feel bad because all your friends stare you down because you are the only one connected you can get Virtual Router from codeplex website and you can turn your laptop into a hotspot
hopefully there will be a fix or a different application that does not require root
feel free to pm me with suggestions or questions

In FoxFi, in the upper right hand corner, there are Bytes that keep flashing from 1K/316 to 1K/0 etc. Don't know if that's an issue, whether the app is activated or not.
this is working great for me......I'm stock rooted on ek02. haven't checked 4g, but 3g works like a champ. i didn't have to modify anything.... i can imagine it probably won't be on the Android market long.

wifi phone router?

ok i no you can use wifi tether to tether your 3g/4g, but is there anyway to use wifi and tether your wifi through your house on a android phone. I have a wireless router at my house, but it does not reach all the way acrossed the house. is it possible to use an old android phone to tether my wifi singal further through my house? or can it only be done on my rezound with by 3g/4g signal?
Actually, this is a good question. What you're really asking is, can you use your phone as a wireless access point for your home network. I don't have an answer (at least, not one from 5 minutes of Googling) but I'm interested to know.

unfortunately you cannot do this, as the phone's wifi connection can only be used either for connecting to your network, or tethering to another device, not both. you can however buy a "wifi repeater" to extend the range of your wireless router.

well thanks for reply guys was really hoping it could work i got 2 extra android phones sitting around.
In theory, it is possible. You can use a tethering program to a PC via USB and then use the PC to "share" or "bridge" the connection to a WAP. I may try that when I get time, I just picked up a new Alcatel Omnistack switch I want to test out.
There is a way of doing this... but it may or may not help you out. Allow me to explain:
I used to live in a house where I kept a basic PC tower in the living room for playing movies. It did not have a wifi card. I was able to use my Droid 1 to tether this living room PC to my home AP.
Now, you're problem is that the wifi isn't even reaching the PC you want to get online. If you have a Droid 1 and it can get on to the AP without a terrible drop in throughput, this will work for you. If not, then it won't.
Here's what to do if you have a Droid 1 that can get on your home AP where the PC can't:
Install CM7 on the Droid 1
Connect to the AP
Connect the Droid 1 to the PC via the USB cable
Enable USB / Wired tethering
Done
It can be a little temperamental, but it works.
This does not address his question. Wired tethering the wifi does work, as you pointed out, but this will not help him extend the range of the network. If the phone is wired to a computer that is too far away to reach the wireless network, the phone is too far away as well.

[Q] Wifi Tethering.

A friend of mine recently purchased a Razr Maxx xt912. He has a unlimited data plan and wants to make use of the tethering ability without having to pay Verizon the extra 20 a month. He last phone was the Droid X2. Which I rooted and bootstrapped and loaded CM7 onto it he loved it wants me to do the same with his Razr. My question is, Does anybody actually know the method of how Verizon determines if your trying to tether? I thought it may have been something built into the stock ROM, but that doesn't make sense since you can get a tethering app and it bypasses that security check. My other questions are, Which ROM should I try and which is the most reliable he is a paramedic and uses hes phone actively for the job. I have read that CM7 does make one for Razr, but I cannot find it on these forums.
Download Foxfi from the market. Works like a charm.
Yes, FoxFi... it's free and it works. Not exactly like a charm... occasionally, I have to shut the hotspot off and restart it once or twice before my tablet sees it. But overall, it's a great app, gives me good speed, and once connected, a stable internet connection. With a strong 4G signal, I'm consistently 25mbps+ down.
You know Koush right? Here's some information about his Wifi-Tether app: http://goo.gl/5dkha
It is said that the provider doesn't notice that you're tethering with this app, it's being logged as a normal mobile connection.

No (according to the article I read) Verizon also agreed not charge for tethering. The article however said that this would only apply to 4G non-unlimited plans which is the case now anyways I believe. I did not see anything that specifically said they can't charge it for unlimited or 3g accounts but I guess they prob still will

it saves our family of 4 smart phones 80$ a MONTH!!!
I don't ever need unlimited, I pay for wifi at my house so I take advantage of that and the batt savings.
only use 4g when needed.

if for vista, i upgraded to wiindows 7, that was a fiasco, then i upgrade my comp from 2GB RAM to 6.5GB and apparaently anything over $GB the wifi wont work.
took me all day of google searching to find the hacked code.
i even to this day have to start my computer a special way to disable signature something to get the wifi to work, happy dont have to do that crap anymore. lol

The FoxFi with proxy addon works well, but it it's limited to http/https protocols, and your device that you are tethering must have an option to set up proxy settings. If you need other protocols, you will need a USB tether option.

Currently it uses Bluetooth, and they are planning on supporting WiFi. If your using it on a PC it only works with the browser (I've used it with Firefox). When first connecting my Asus to my Incredible it wasn't taking. I messed around with it, and added my tablet and then they all connected. After the first connection it now automatically connects if the app is running on both devices.
If you want more info Google open garden.

Hey there,
Has anyone tried the ##778 hack to enable Wifi Hotspot tethering on the DINC4G?? Does it work?

Tried the old hack as soon as I got the phone. Unfortunately, it does not work.
Connectify is another option (if you have the right hardware), never gave me a bsod. People probably get it because they have the wrong hardware. I had the right hardware and had to do this when I had a Rooted Motorola Droid/Milestone (which is in the garbage since it broke), cause it's wifi tether was ad-hoc only. (Still never failed me)

I wouldn't use tethering apps that require gps (especially assisted gps).
