[GUIDE]How to Flash CWM and Flash ROMS from Scratch..with pictures! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello! Here I will show you how to flash CWM to your Galaxy Note which is considered to be a "recovery" portion of the device that takes place of the stock one and has additional functionality. Less talk, more do:
Step 1: Obtain the files you need.
Download the driver necessary for your computer to communicate with your phone and install from:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717ZBAATT
Download Odin 1.85:
Google/Bing it since I don't know a valid link that's allowed to be used, will update with one if possible.
Download the CWM Touch Based Recovery from Braway's thread located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584576 the yellow Odin link
Download your choice of a ROM(a custom optimized version of the Android operating system). Here are a few very popular ones:
The Hybrid(ICS):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630089
SAUROM(GB):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522942
Seraphim(ICS):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602632
Step 2: Prep your phone by placing it in "Download" mode.
Turn off your phone.
Connect it via USB to your computer.
Hold down the Volume Down button at the same time as your hold the power button until the phone vibrates once. As soon as the phone vibrates once release the power button while continuing to hold Volume Down until you see this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Press Volume Up to confirm.
Step 3: Flash CWM.
On your computer navigate to Odin3 v1.85 and launch it with Administrative privledges to be safe(right-click - Run as Administrator).
It will open(hopefully) and you will see this. Ensure that "Auto Reboot", "F. Reset Time", and "PDA" are checkmarked.
Click the PDA button and navigate to Braway's CWM that you downloaded in step 1. Select it and select ok.
It should show next to the PDA button and then hold your breath sniper style and click "Start"
Wait until you see Passed in the top left hand corner which should take maybe 10-60 seconds and you are golden. If not your phone could be trashed and it's not my fault, just saying.
Step 4: Get into CWM
Power off the phone.
Similar to how you got into download mode except for the keypress is slightly different.
Hold down the Volume Down AND Volume Up button(kind of pressing the middle of the volume key itself) at the same time as your hold the power button until the phone vibrates once. As soon as the phone vibrates once release the power button while continuing to hold Volume Down until you see this:
Step 1: Understanding CWM, usage.
Before doing anything, navigate to "Backup and Restore" and select backup and confirm. This is known as a nandroid backup. If you ever are caught in a bind you will navigate here and select Restore instead of Backup in this menu.
Now is play time without many worries. Restart back into the normal Android system and gain access to your internal SD card via USB on your computer. Copy your ROM to "the root" of your SD card.
Restart back into CWM.
You're ready to flash, but right before flashing any ROM perform the following steps:
Select wipe data/factory reset and confirm
Select wipe cache partition and confirm
Select advanced - wipe dalvik cache and confirm
Select install zip from SD card
Select from internal SD card or wherever you placed it.
Select the ROM file and confirm.
Wait while you see something like this:
Once the bottom line says something like complete you'll have access to the menu to select Go Back and then Reboot system now.
All done!

Do you still experience this error? This was a known issue that should now be corrected in Braway's CWM.

I have done this over and over again and still cannot get CWM to work

Edit: old info, sorry its late and IM tired.

Thank you. I have been looking for a guide with detailed pics to try my first flashing.
Everyone says flashing is easy, but just reading up on all the articles/info is a bit much, especially never having done it before.
I will give it a try tonight.

It is easy, and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to learn everything you need. If somebody doesn't have that much time, they shouldn't be flashing. When I started on my captivate, it definitely took me a few days, but I spent the time, and as a result, I've only had one soft brick ever through 3 phones. Reading and searching has becoming underrated here on XDA, and it's sad, because I know people are rushing things and screwing up their phones, when if they would take a little bit of time they would have no problems. Yes, guides like this are nice, but ultimately they are unnecessary and problematic, because even though it is a simple process, people are still having trouble with it, and threads like this encourage people to flash without actually knowing anything.

The fact that you cannot find the path to a file is alarming. I'd stay away from flashing a phone.

if you are ref'ing to: how to put the ROM that you are going to flash, you put it on what should be listed as phone, internal and if you have ext, sd dont put it there.
then you boot into CWM and do your wipes as per whatever ROM op's that your are installing...and point to the internal sd card look for file name of ROM that you downloaded.
Maybe you should do a google search on Youtube on flashing there are some for the Note...just an idea...

Need a little more info. I'm assuming you have the ROM dl'd to your PC and wanna move it to your phone? Do as bigjoe said if this is the case.

Like there's no were on my computer that says phone or phone storage. So is it my computer or what?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Maybe you should download the ROM directly to your phone. It doesn't have to be dl'd to your PC and then moved to your phone. I never use my PC anymore.

How would I do that?

Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix

THESE FILES ARE ONLY FOR THE VERIZON FASCINATE
THESE FILES HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED ON ANY OTHER SGS PHONE BY ME
THESE FILES WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK FOR YOUR PHONE IF IT IS NOT A VERIZON FASCINATE
First, download and install the samsung drivers found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Then download odin from here: https://sites.google.com/a/imnuts.net/android/update-to-dj05/Odin.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
Then download the clockwork package from here: http://goo.gl/HELdr
If you have a lag fix installed, remove it. This is my opinion, and is completely optional. But i do not recommend the lag fixes, as the ones that install / work on the fascinate do nothing really, just wait for voodoo port
Then:
Put phone into download mode.
-Turn off phone
-Pull battery
-Press vol down button while plugging into computer
-Should show a yellow triangle
Open odin on pc
-Odin should show a yellow bar with a com port showing that it detects your phone
Click "PDA" button and select the CWMrecovery.tar you downloaded earlier
Click start
This will reboot your phone when complete. This flashes both the kernel and the recovery partition to enable you to flash update.zips signed with test keys. You will need to download Rom Manager from the market and select flash Clockwork Mod and select "fascinate"
To use clockwork, you can reboot recovery and Rom Manager, or cold boot into recovery (power off phone, power back on while holding both volume keys). If you cold boot into recovery you need to select apply update.zip and it will launch ClockworkMod.
Optional: ClockworkMod update.zip file (place this in your sdcard's root, and only download this if you cannot get into rom manager) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/458252/Fascinate Files/update.zip
If this post has helped you, please consider reading this:
Donations! Well, i have never asked for donations, but i would like to ask that if these files or any of my work has helped you in any way, please go to world vision and donate as you see fit. All of my work has been done for me, and i release it as i know other people would like it / need it.

Big thanks to lilinser / dkcldark; koush; humancyborg, namebrandon, geeknik, and many others that were testing and constantly flashing their phones!
And without ludeboy, well, i wouldnt even be able to get into download mode to fix my phone in the first place
Thank you!
I didn't pull the battery, just turned the phone off while holding the volume down button. Maybe I should have, as it is stuck on the Nandroid backup on Linux.ex2.
Edit, spoke too soon. I unplugged the USB cable, and is finished updating. Bring on the kernels! I want to see what this does clocked.
If you do a Nandroid backup with the lagifx installed it takes a LONG time
edit: I have done all of my odin work with the battery in and have had 0 problems
also remember, if you try to boot into recovery and you dont see it. FLASH THE RECOVERY IN ROM MANAGER TWICE.

Yes, nandroid backups will take a LONG time to complete if you are using a lagfix. I would start removing the lagfix now, we have something much much better planned for you guys.
And pulling the battery isnt necessary, just insures that new people get it done right, eliminates some questions / problems.
Removed lagfix, and confirmed that everything here works.

stock roms can be found in my odin restore thread, at least as close to stock as we can get right now.
Thanks ya'll, you guys are awesome!!!!!!!
So I have a question....may be a dumb one....but why is it called Odin? Is that Samsung specific? The reason I ask is Odin was a code name for the 9550 storm and so it confuses me. Thanks and sorry for off topic.
success
it worked perfectly as described...
i removed lagfix first
ran ROM Manager (premium i flashed CWM twice, just to be sure...
i backed it up in ROM Manager.. when i rebooted to recovery from RM i got an MD5 checksum error when trying to restore..
I then ran a backup while in recovery.. during that backup i got no /sdcard/.android_secure found but it seemed to complete.
I used restore created from nandroid and it completed error free. (tho it did take a while, even with no lagfix (lots of data, apparently))
My phone booted just fine afterwards.... but it did sit for a while at the VZW splash screen. it made be nervous.. but i was patient
THANK YOU!
EDIT: In RM... i renamed the backup that i made in CMR and then chose to restore... it booted into CMR as expected and started restoring... completed successfully.
when it completes booting... i get a system alarm tone that doesnt go away until i use the notification pulldown... it did after both times i used the recovery.
Now that we have clockworkmod we can remove apps as long as we backed up right? I was getting rid of some bloat but stopped before i went to far. Sorry for sounding like a noob

Gingerbread Full SBF 4.5.608

This is the last full SBF official for the Droid 2 Global. This will put you back to the last stock OTA without having to do any other updates later. Flash with RSD Lite.
As with any such file posted on a forum site, use at your own risk, but I know that is the official VZW SBF file
Step 1: Boot into the bootloader, you do this by powering on and holding power on + volume up + volume down. You should see a black screen with text that says battery: OK
Step 2: Plug is your usb cord into the computer you loaded the rsdlite file on
Step 3: Click on your rsdlite program. You need to run as an administrator, to do that hold shift key and right click on the rsdlite program (do that as you are about to open the program).
Step 4: Next to the file name text box in the rsdlite program are three little dots. Click on those dots and find the file Click on that file and then click start. Make sure you have a strong battery before flashing this is the one time you need to ensure your battery is ok to get through the process, because the program erases everything and re-flashes your phone.
Step 5: Wait for it to get to 100% and reboot your phone to the motorola "M" symbol first then unplug your device. While at the M take off the battery cover out and remove your battery. Wait for about 3 seconds and then reinstall your battery. Power on and hold the physical X key until you get to the triangle and !.
Step 6: on your physical keyboard push the search button to get into the recovery mode. From there you are going to wipe data/factory reset. AFter that is complete click reboot.

Don't know if anyone else has this problem (I think my friend's phone is possessed), but I have to push volume up+down simultaneously instead of pressing the search key on the hardware keyboard to bring up the recovery menu.
I hope this saves someone else many hours of searching and angry table hitting.

Hello,
I recently acquired a D2G. It was running the OTA stock Gingerbread and was rooted when given to me.
I was foolish and deleted the My Accounts app as I thought it was a Verizon My Account only app.
I did not back up the system apps with Titanium...again foolish move.
Had some issues and used the factory reset. However, that obviously cannot restore system apps I deleted.
Is there any pre- steps needed to push this to the phone? Or can I simply run it in via RDSLite and then start from scratch?
Thanks

zipped SBF MD5 is the same as what you get 77185076B8EF7C962534B6223AD4BA1E
actual extracted SBF has MD5: 2152EE89E314F5B282753EE56FA36C07
If you get that MD5 on the zip, you are ok.
I am sure you know you need to extract the SBF from the zip file before you can flash it with RSDLite.

unbrick

I tried to install a custom rom on my phone and something went wrong. I was in cwm recovery and installing it from the zip file, but it said the installation failed (after it said someting like system is already unmounted). The phone is stuck on the green HTC letters. I can get into the bootloader screen, but I cannot get back into recovery. I click it, and the recovery screen flashes, but that is it. I think I need to flash a rom, but I am unsure how to do that. Can someone please help me? I did a little searching, but honestly I am scared that I wont be able to fix it and I just need a little help.
Thanks

You need to flash the kernel from inside the ROM zip file.
Then, once u get booted up, download and install 4ext recovery to prevent this from happening again
And if u ask me how to flash a kernel, I PROMISE, u will NOT like my response :-D

Is it the kernal from the stock rom that I was on or the one I was trying to install? Also, can you describe how to flash it? Sorry for all the questions, but I really do apreciate the help.

Just some friendly advice: It's always better to search for your answer before asking for help. People will be more willing to help, if you have first demonstraded that you have exhausted all efforts to help yourself. XDA is not a help/support site. It has always been about and for development.

I am sorry glacierguy I didn't see that part of your post. I did do a search and the information I found said that you must go into recovery. I cannot get into recovery. When I select recovery from the boot menu the phone restarts and something that looks like the recovery screen quickly flashes and then the phone goes back to the HTC screen.

Download a stock ruu, place it on your sd card rename it PH85IMG, boot into bootloader, it'll ask if you want to update, volume up as yes, when it finishes and reboots, root via hasoon's tool, install 4EXT recovery via the app, note that you have to install busy box first, this can be found on the market, once you have 4EXT recovery, start your rom flashing to the new rom all over again, this time it should be fine.
The problem is that I cant place the information onto the sdcard since it is not visible on the computer because the phone will not start all the way. Is there an alternative way to do this? When the phone did start I was transferring the information to the sdcard by using the phone in disk drive mode when connected to the computer. My computer has an sdcard slot, but it is the larger size and I can't find the adapter. Is that the only way to do this?

Find the adapter or learn fastboot commands... Adapter would be easier... I could see fastboot commands not going well witb you. If u can't find it, they're dirt cheap at Wal-Mart or Target (wherever u shop)

Here is an example of where a google search would serve you well. There are sd card adapters for this purpose.

Please take some time to research before asking questions. Modding phones requires a lot of research and understanding. The answers are there, if you take the time to read. Developers invest a lot of their personal time into development, and they do so, absolutely free. They also share all the necessary info. If you read, read, then read some more, you will find the answers.

Can't tell him about fastboot commands because I'm pretty sure he's not on a modded or the ENG hboot, therefore he'd be wasting time, grab the adapter, that's your best chance.
Thank you everybody for the help. Dark Nightmare you were especially helpful and I really apreciate it. I got the new rom on my phone and everything is working now. Originally I did follow the instructions for putting the new rom on, but the problem was they were old instructions and they did not involve 4ext recovery so the flash didn't work. After that the problem was that I didn't have the sd adapter, but I went and got one and everything worked perfectly.
I find this forum really useful and I am sorry if I angered glacier guy or anybody else, but I did do some searches and sometimes it is just better to ask a question. After all, thats one of the reasons a forum exist in the first place, right?

Just installed ICS, can't install CWM

I flashed ICS vwith KIES last night, this morning i was just trying to flash the CWM Odin file, then was going to root using the files suggested from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28559853&postcount=79
Odin is showing that the install passes, but i can't enter CWM...??
reboot while holding vol + and - together until you see the CWM screen?
You might need to provide more info.
what exactly happens when from power off you hold volume up/down and power button at the same time?
i'd reflash the cwm.
My mistake! i thought it was only the Vol + button, not both.
Thing is, there are so many people talking about how to install CWM, but it was hard when i searched to get good info on how to boot into CWM recovery mode.
Thanks and sorry for the dumb problem
Here's braways CWM recovery boot App. No need to turn the phone off anymore. Forget holding buttons!

Install like a regular app. Download APK file and open it. Once installed, open the app and you should see this.

TWRP has great built in GUI functions built right into recovery. Tomorrow we will be updating to 2.2 with a working keyboard in recovery. For those interested in the current release please visit http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/96
I went with GooManager after havin issues with CWM before it was stable (guessing it is now?). I find it easier to navigate and a little better organized for my tastes.

Make sure you have good CWM file. cwm-i717-120305.tar.md5 is the one I used (Non-Touch)
I hold power + Volume rocker (center), wait for reboot, let is buzz a couple times, let go of power - hold volume, samsung logo, hold volume for another 2-3 seconds, let go of volume ... into CWM it goes.
PHONE MUST BE POWERED OFF
HOLD both + - volumes buttons in....then
HOLD power on until it vibrates and logo appears.
LET OFF Volumes buttons.....enter CWM

How do you install this?
Download it from the link I posted. Go to your download folder and click on the file. It should prompt to install. Click install.

Thanks. I figured it out.
Ok, I installed CWM through odin, it passed. when i boot into recovery, I get the 3e stock recovery.
I tried odin again 4 times with a couple of version of CWM (my counter says 4 to prove it), but booting into recovery always takes me to 3e stock. what am I missing?
I have a Rogers Note, just upgraded to ICS this morning.

It seams there is a script re-installing 3m recovery during a normal startup (probably /system/etc/install-recover.sh). I found a work around:
Copy rooting zip to your storage. After you flash CWM through Odin, the phone will reboot automatically. DON'T let it reboot! As soon as it turns off, take the battery out. Now, put the battery back and start the phone in Recovery mode (Volume + an - and PWR) - it will start CWM. Install Root or do a backup. Restart normally - it will put 3m recovery back.
I'll test renaming the script for a permanent solution...

I did as you suggested and I got root. I then went and renamed install_recovery.sh in /etc, I then had to install CWM one more time through odin and now it seems permanent and with root.
Can you detail how you renamed the file? I too have this problem.

You need to Root first (as described above). After that use Root explorer or similar app to rename the install-recovery.sh file to something like install-recovery.sh.bkp.

Worked great! Have root and CWM. Curious if only non AT&T Notes have this issue. Do you have an AT&T Note?

SOS: Help a Noob stuck at Samsung screen upon attempt to root

Hello,
Could you pls help a noob with a rooting problem? I attempted to root my ICS AT&T Galaxy Note i-717 using Odin3 v 1.85 and a pda.tar file. Prior to that, I had checked and confirmed the USB drivers are installed (I have Kies software installed on the PC. However, folliwing the succesful flash of pda.tar I got the phone stuck at the Samsung screen. I could still get to the download screen. However, the phone would not go pass that screen. Can you pls tell me what I did wrong/guide me w simple steps on how to fix the phone and finish the root? I have the read many different root treads but I find them confusing. Treads are ponting at different files to be frashed/installed on the phone. Thanks very much.
This happens from time to time...don't worry.
Reboot phone in download mode, connect phone, reflash kernel.
A few things: use stock samsung cable. Use back of computer usb port. Reboot computer before you try again. Re download the kernel to be sure your file is not corrupted. Make sure phone battery is more than 80%.

Rangercaptain,
Thanks very much. Where can I get the kernel from and which one/which file do I need to flash? Also, how do I flash it? Do I use Odin or another method? Again Thanks a lot!

Make sure Kies is closed
Yes, good suggestion. I would reboot the computer, put the phone in download, open Odin3, then plug in phone.
All that is well explained in the thread.
Problem solved

Stuck at Samsung
I have the same issue tho have tried troubleshooting and could really use some extra help.
Updated to ATT stock ICS update a few months ago. Everything workin fine.
Wanted to root it so I could back everything up not to lose anything when moving to JB.
Rooted by flashing Da_G's pda.tar, reboot, and then flashed 2.3.3.0 TWRP
Noticed it was stuck at Samsung.
Here's where I'm kickin myself because I should have backed it up before all this, but I waited because I figured root doesn't wipe data!
Entered TWRP, backed up.
Now what I've tried to fix it... and failed
1. Reflashed pda.tar about 5 times
2. Found a stock pda "pda-odin-att-stock.tar", flashed (fixed) but it's stock setup and contacts and other google services don't work, lost homescreen icon placement and all other settings.
3. TWRP: Restore all = stuck at Samsung again
4. Repeat 2 and Restore only System
5. Repeat 2 and Restore only Data
6. Repeat 2 and flash pda.tar = boots, but same thing with it all stock, so I restore and it's stuck again.
It's my wife's phone and she has contacts that aren't saved in Google, to-do lists saved in app data files, and to be honest, she said everything better be exactly the same after updating (which I promised it would be since the plan was to root, backup, update, and restore), so I'm kinda trying to save my hide. PLEASE HELP me save my ass ha!
Other things to note: I just rooted a new phone about 30mins prior with the exact same root and TWRP files and it went very smooth, no issues.
Using a Samsung original cable on a laptop. Phone Battery was ~30% when I did all the steps, but since then read that battery should be higher so swapped out to fully charged battery and retried the steps.
Using the root kernel you did, basically flashed a Gingerbread kernel over an ICS rom. (Doesn't work)
Your best bet at this point, is too flash a rooted ICS build from bigfau ...(located in the super thread stock section)
Just flash using TWRP ....BUT !!!
make sure you wipe the dalvik cache, system cache, and system before flashing the rooted ICS build.
Once the rom is flashed, you will be stock and rooted.
Regarding data you have lost with no backup....start begging forgiveness now ....it's gone ....g

Wouldn't I be able to just flash an ICS Kernel to undo the GB kernel and set things straight? Or is the whole thing ruined already?
I have the data/app and data/data files. If all's really lost, I'll just put JB on it. If I copy the data/app and data/data files onto the new image will all the apps with their settings/data be restored at least?
Yes, flash the correct kernel.
I think what happened to me is the OS got deleted cuz once I flashed a rom I was good to go!
