[Bounty] Enable FM Radio on i717 Galaxy Note - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

There has been some interest in FM radio on the North American Galaxy Note (i717).
Word on the forums is that the fm chipset is in the phone but is not enabled, with some stating that it could be enabled through the hard work of a dev.
I propose a bounty for the dev that can liberate fm radio on i717.
My hope is that enough people join me to create a reasonable prize as I understand this would take a lot of work.
I also welcome discussion by devs or others in the know about whether this even possible, if they can confirm the fm chipset, and if this has been done successfully with other devices.

I'm searching for clarification on this as well. Other posters in threads in this forum state that the chip is there just not enabled:

If anyone has hard proof either way we can put these questions to rest asap.

From mikereidis, who's very confident there is no chip (willing to put money on it). Seems reasonable to me:

To those others I say: "Prove it". I would be VERY happy if they were correct. More devices with usable chips means I sell more apps.
I have not ripped one of these devices open, taken high res photos and analysed them, but I'm sure some companies have, and some pics are likely available on the web somewhere.
But here's the preponderance of evidence:
- No device driver visible at /dev/fmradio as in the International version. And I'd bet the kernel in use supports that driver if installed on an International version.
- No FM app from AT&T, Bell or Telus, and when asked they will tend to tell you that there will never be an FM app for these models. (But you never know what some random customer service person might say.)
Note that some carriers, including AT&T, have mistakenly used International version marketing materials that mention FM and when that is pointed out to them, they quickly rectify the web pages so as not to face charges of false advertising.
- Nobody has gotten a stock or any other FM app working on them yet, and I know many people have tried.
- US carriers, especially large ones like AT&T have been in the habit of commissioning special versions of the Galaxy S, S2 and similar models that have no si470x FM chip, despite the Canadian or International versions having that chip.
Same with the Nexus S (Galaxy S variant) and Galaxy Nexus (Galaxy S2 variant).
I've "put my money where my mouth is" and offered a $300 bounty on several devices, including some of the above, and fully expect nobody will ever qualify.

They want you to pay for data.

It is not because of the carrier. It is a limitation of the chipset.

I bought the Pro version it works so great...

I use a combo of AOnline Radio and Tunein Radio. But I would pay for an android version of Pocket Tunes.

The tuner is there just not active. I have talked intently with samsung about it. The quoted from the the dev that said it's not there states that the same fm chip from the International version is not there . The phone also has a built in volume adjustment for the fm tuner (attached). Samsung said "the tuner is there but we are not able to release any information about it because the phone is new and we may or may not be developing something for it that may or may not be released in the future." You have to love how the word things.

I am sure that the lack of the FM radio on the Samsung Galaxy Note is not some conspiracy on the part of AT&T to get you to pay for data. It is almost certainly due to a lack of the FM radio on the SoC. My wife's crappy HTC Status has an Soc with FM radio chip, and on AT&T it is enabled. If our phone had that functionality in hardware, it would have come enabled in software. Unlike the NFC chip and tethering plan, software blocking the FM radio will give AT&T no extra source of easy money.

I'd really like to see the FM radio enabled on our phones... if it's there.

[Q] FM Radio?

Picked up my Rezound yesterday, liking it so far. Most of the reviews mentioned a FM radio and I can't for the life of me figure out how to access it. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not finding it either.... I only found slacker preinstalled.
This has saddened me because I was using my girlfriends Droid inc2 and I loved the fm radio.
Woah I was expecting more a "sent from HTC vigor" or something not that at the bottom.

Update: I installed the app but when I plugged in my headphones it never launched due to the Rezound missing an FM Chip.
Guess we have to cross our fingers that HTC releases an update with FM app since the other ones can't find the chip.
Does it even have an FM radio?
Is there actually an FM tuner in the Rezound to utilize an FM radio? Or did HTC skip out on that?
You'd certainly think they'd advertise it if they had an FM tuner in the Rezound. I mean, they are marketing it as a smartphone for music lovers, are they not?
I doubt there is one in it. Technically there was one in my CDMA desire, but it wasn't wired up all the way so you couldn't get a signal.
Now that we have an unlock and perm-root, is there any way to officially validate this one way or the other? Just gave my GF my TBolt so I could get a Rezound, and missing the FM Radio from the TBolt a little bit (yea obviously I can buy a $5 one from Wally-World, just nice to have it all in one place )

It requires data (not an issue in itself, but when no wifi, that can kill the battery)...additionally, for when I'm at the gym and they have tvs with short-range FM transmitters. I've also found it handy when snowboarding when I don't have consistent data everywhere on the mountain. So yeah, a couple reasons Again, I know a lot of this can be resolved with a dedicated FM player/MP3 player, but it's nice to have options, especially when consolidated.
I had a fm radio in my Inc.,you had to use headphones as a antenna, would be nice to get it back on my Rezound

Thanks, I think I saw that thread as well- hoping to keep this alive now that we are unlocked to see if anything more can be discovered. I know prior to unlocking there were obviously a lot more limits to what we could do/check.

Analog+Radio-Receiver: FM radio (76-90MHz) with RDS
There is a tuner chip in there but it appears it's of the European /Asian FM band.

Anyone find out anything new about the FM tuner?

Can anyone confirm if the ATT note has an FM radio?

I ended up not getting a ATT SGS2 because AT&T chose to remove this feature.
Any idea if they did it again?

Yeah, unfortunately it will more than likely be removed. One thing we can work on is if the Korean LTE version has FM, because if it does maybe we can port it over as the Hardware should be 'mostly' the same.

Apparently, it's not difficult at all to get the int'l Note to work with ATT (of course haven't tried yet myself), but this guide looks pretty simple to follow.

Most likely it will not have an FM transmitter. AT&T and Samsung's USA websites do not list "FM transmitter" in any of the specs.

So it is confirmed that the Note comes with FM receiver hardware... but no application to make use of it? Is it at all possible to get it working? I actually just learned there is no FM app... major bummer for me as I listen to radio quite often... and I'm not one of the lucky ones that have unlimited data.
On one hand, AT&T wants to throttle data so "everyone can have a pleasurable experience"... on the other hand, they remove phone functions which directly reduce the amount of data users require. I've been with Sprint for 15 years and trust me, I've had my frustrations with them. But AT&T sure seems to stick it to their customers more than any other company.
I'm not sure why this is a surprise. Samsung has been consistently pulling radio functionality from almost all of their US branded phones for quite some time. Though I've never really understood the reasoning, it doesn't bother me because I am not often in a position where my phone is the only source of FM radio and when I am, most often wifi is available, so I can use an app that my local FM station has out to listen to my favorite morning show (Preston and Steve on WMMR in Philly!).
Forcing you to use data doesn't make much sense to me since they have been trying to reduce network load for years now. If anyone ever finds out a real answer to this, please let us know. I'm curious.

Nfc confirmed in note?

still trying to get a answer
I thought it did but I just saw a spec sheet and did not see it listed so I am not sure now.

Yes, it is in the AT&T version. It is not listed as a spec though.
All the new AT&T phones (the high end versions anyway) all come with NFC but none of them have working software stack. Basically they are disabled until AT&T sponsored ISIS takes off. So, consider the NFC as non-functional until AT&T has a change of heart.

With all the security problems (two ways for other ppl to reset the GWallet pin on your phone, one requires root, one doesn't) recently discovered in GWallet, I will steer clear of that app.

We don't need one in the phone since the head phones have the radio built in.
We need a good kernel dev. I thought that the actual hardware is there, and it just needs to be implemented with software drivers.

Wrong again.
To use headphones as an antenna for fm radio, you need a special kind of pin connection inside the device that is a part of the headphone jack port, and a chip onboard to decode the signal. The headphones merely act as the antenna, they don't include any parts for actually receiving and decoding every radio signals.
At least, that's how I understood it, after researching whether my old iPhone 3G our my gf's captivate possibly had untapped fm radios (neither do) :/
Edit: I never stated that our phone has none of those special hardware parts that allow you to use headphones as an antenna. If anyone knows and can prove me wrong, please feel free to correct me.
Oh good Lord, people just dont want to read today. Well maybe they like bullet points instead, so lets recap:

Anything right now about this is just pure speculation.
Right now it is thought they are pretty much identical to Sprint / AT&T models, except for maybe multi-window feature. It seems like there are updates that have been rolled out/will soon be available by carrier and a modified ROM that is supposedly going to be released on XDA that has the feature.
only known difference is home button branding on verizon only.

I thought the leads on the Sprint version were covered up by something.
There are some different pre-installed apps on the various carrier branded versions. Hardware is the same as far as I know, minus possibly the battery. I think carriers may also offer slightly different color variations as well, similar to the SGS3. For the most part though, Samsung has stopped making 400 different configurations of one phone and are making one phone and just changing the software around for the various carriers instead.
I'm curious if the Verizon version will be quad-core.

There's no need to be curious. It is quad-core.
Hardware will only be different in color/branding, and any changes to the radio chips/firmware so they work with VZWs network. Other than that, all devices should be the same from a hardware standpoint. Software is where most of the differences will be, but most of the stuff should be the same as well, with only a handful of carrier specific apps being different.

Samsung Music Hub is part of the features of Samsung Galaxy Note II (Verizon) Check out Samsung support site for Verizon version. The site doesn't mention NFC, but Samsung's support page for T-Mobile's Note 2 doesn't show NFC either even when that device has NFC. The NFC is part of Samsung Music Hub so you can "beam" music. So I take that Samsung Galaxy Note II (Verizon) as having NFC. And yes, the support site does confirm the S Beam.
