Does anything positively charge this thing while it's on? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I've got a 2.1 amp car charger and a cable with the pins crossed. Tablet identifies it as (AC) charging... just tried it out and it dropped a percent even being plugged in.
W-t-f.

Yea the charger that came with it.

I need a car charger that will do the same. What does the charger that came with it output? Mine was from cowboom and didn't come with one.
Also - my HP touchpad charger can't keep up either.
All I have it doing is playing slacker radio music and the screen on.

I am just pissed because I've dumped money into this stupid charging issue and now with a 2.1 amp charger AND usb cable meant for charging the flyer still can't charge with it's screen on.
How in the helllll are you supposed to use the gps on a long trip with it.. Starting to think this was a bad purchase.

Starting to think people just whine and cannot hit the search button or take the time to read things we wrote months ago.
The stock charger puts out 9v @ 1.2 amps and has a special HTC charging plug on the Flyer end. No standard USB wall or auto charger in the world does that. Use a 120v inverter with the HTC wall wart for God's sake.

I did search this.....however this one post that would have answered my question didn't have the word "charge" or "charging" in its title.... so I missed it.

I think HTC has an OEM car charger for like $20-$30.
I agree, it's highly annoying. I was looking yesterday for a right angle cable, but so far, I haven't found one that will still charge this tablet.

Yea, I found a site and ordered the OEM cable - I hope it works because if it doesn't.. this thing is going on ebay and I'll find another solution.
I also have been looking for a right angle cable, but now that you MUST use the htc charger and their weird connector, I'm giving up on that.

Please report back your findings.
I run airplane mode and listen to music through bluetooth from my flyer. My standard charger has been keeping it charged but I haven't run GPS tests with the screen on. I'm sure once I start getting into using GPS with the View I'll be looking for a new car charger as well.

You can get the OEM car charger from Sprint.
Sadly, I don't see Best Buy offering any accesories for the Flyer (including spare chargers/car chargers) so I'm probably going to buy a charger or two from Sprint at some point.

Fascinating... Now I do agree that it wasn't stated very well, I do have to pause here and laugh at your previous claims. A question is a question. I myself have experienced this issue, I just never thought about posting about it. Learned the hard way that if I want to charge it completely, the screen and all apps have to be off because they consume more power.
But you, my, you are a fascinating spectacle I will never quite understand. It almost seems, and please correct me if I am wrong, that you get a pleasure out of making those you perceive as lesser intelligent feel stupid. Also want to redefine "you" as quite a few people on this forum. Remember that people have to learn from somewhere, so please aid them.
So here is something I would like you to take from this before you apply the ever so interesting label troll to this... statement of recent activities. If someone has a question, even if they haven't researched it, then post a link. Because people like me have the misfortune of Googleing threads like this and I receive comments from people like "you" that make the entire experience unpleasant and a true waste of my time.
I also truly wish someone would sticky this post, because these forums are riddled with people like the previously mentioned.

I know how you feel. I think some people have had luck with cutting the cable on the OEM charger and transplanting a regular MicroUSB end, but I just hate the thought of hacking up an expensive OEM charger.
This issue, combined with the crappy support from HTC and the seemingly impossible development of ICS has me strongly considering just getting a different tablet. I bought it primarily to use in the car, but also because of the pen function, but now the pens don't seem to be going back down in price, so I haven't bought one. I just don't like the idea of having to keep pouring into this stupid thing. My plan is to wait it out until Google releases the Nexus tablet, and see how I feel then.

Well, there are several on Amazon. This one is reasonable, but has not yet been rated.

The pictures show a standard MicroUSB tip, so I'm assuming that's just another generic charger. I hate it when vendors do that...they have that junk on eBay, too. I'm sure it works just fine as a regular charger, but I doubt it will work properly for the View.

From everything I've read this will NOT allow you to actually charge the battery while you are using the flyer to do anything.
I want FULL brightness, playing music, using the gps... and still being able to charge.
Anything less than that and it's Aidos to the flyer and OEM charger.

Did you only order a OEM cable, or did you order the actual OEM car charger? I ask because I've used the OEM cable with a 2.1A car charger, and it was unable to charge the device while it was in moderate to heavy use. The charging process via a wall outlet is also incredibly slow if you use the OEM cable with a USB wall charger (versus using the OEM charger which is one piece rather than a USB cable that separates from the charger). The actual OEM car charger should a difference since the OEM wall charger does.

Well, you're likely to be disappointed I believe, and it's no fault of the View or the chargers. Expecting to be able to have the screen on with full brightness, to be playing music, and to use the GPS all simultaneously is a tall order for absolutely any device. Under those circumstances, any phone or tablet will likely not be able to charge when connected to a vehicle charger. At the absolute best, you might maintain the charge level or lose just a small amount. But to actually increase the charge while doing all of that (especially having the screen on at full brightness continuously) is very, very unlikely with any device or any vehicle charger.

You sure you linked to the right thing? The View's OEM chargers have a 9V output, while normal USB chargers only do 5V. The Amazon link doesn't seem to say anything about voltage as far as I can see.

All you have to see is the picture of the standard microUSB tip to know that the charger in the link will not adequately charge the View while under moderate use. HTC uses a modified microUSB port that allows for faster charging of their devices. Standard microUSB cables and chargers can be used with the View, but they don't supply the same level of charge. All the charger in that link would do for the View is charge it very slowly if it wasn't in use at all.

No Apple cable will work on this device. The Transformer has a proprietary charger interface, so the cable would have to be made specifically for this device.
Similarly, all Apple product chargers use their own proprietary interfaces, so chargers made for iPhones or iPads will only be made to work with iPhones or iPads, not other devices.
And the funny part is that someone responded...

Haha, no iPhone cable would not work with Asus. Last I checked, Asus cable was proprietary as well.
Wait a little, soon someone's gonna dismantle one and they will be anywhere (monoprice, ebay)... (i guess(hope), the apple cable actually is everywhere even if it is proprietary...)

cable no, but the ipad charger itself is 5v 2A. Has anyone tried one, if it works may provide an easy solution for car charger.
I would love an additional cable. I'm going on a trip and I could just see me losing the one and only way to charge the Transformer. Stupid proprietary cables. I still love my Asus Transformer, but we need uniformity.

I believe they're just referring to the charger itself not the apple sync cable. And no that isn't likely to work as the ASUS charger gives out 15V/1.2A on one of the pins unique to USB3
The 6ft USB 3 Male/Female extension cable is now back in stock on monoprice. For those that haven't been reading up, this is essentially an extension to charge your Transformer since the extra pins in USB 3 are used for power.

Any car charger in the market? Off topic but optimumwifi is getting 6mbps down, 10mbps up on this baby.
Bumping this thread. I find it hard to believe (or at least surprising) that this has been out 3 months now and I still can't find any third party replacement cables and/or 15v chargers. Paying $25 for a factory one is simply not something I can do, it just makes me sick to my stomach.
The most important thing I would like to find is the cable. I did buy a monoprice USB extension cable, which at least makes using the device while charging possible - but it is no solution in the case of this factory cable breaking in any way. I always like to have an extra charging cable on hand, and usually pay $1.99 or less for such things for my other phones and tablets.

@brunes
I agree with you. This reminds me too much of the original asus eee pc. There were no additional chargers nor expansion ssd (mini pcie) available for months. People were coming up with all sorts of work around ideas. Argh.
The idea of not having a replacement cable and charger does make me very uncomfortable. This is really unacceptable, and I hope Asus fixes it immediately.
I have to think about a post I read: just buy a second one and immediately return it with the bad charger if yours goes bad. This seems to screw the retailer, but hopefully Asus covers their cost in these cases.
In any case, it is a bad problem. I wrote my newegg review to exactly highlight this problem.
Not having a replacement cable is not a very comfortable feeling.
Anyway, an iPad charger does work for the tablet. I don't have a dock so no way to test it.
However, I noticed that using an iPad charger, theTF does not chnage the battery icon to charging and it charges a bit slower.

It is charging at 5V. I assume using diodes to charge the cells in parallel instead of series without causing a short. Only other explanation is ASUS put DC-DC regulator in to ramp up the 5V. Only works while off or asleep and is sloooooowww...took me 8 hrs to get 22% charge on 5V USB.
a rabbit just chewed up my new transformer's cable
i emailed asus, but from my googling it looks like i'll have to spend about $40 ordering a replacement cable from a random retailer. sucks!
Check the DIY charger thread link in my signature. With 2 off the shelf parts you can have another charger for under $15.

Can you charge the Gtab through USB?

Just ordered a portable USB charger.
Does the gtab take a charge from either of its usb ports?
I hope it does
Nope, but I am a noob. Ask an expert.
If it does, it would have to be from the mini USB port. The full sized one is a master (i.e. it supplies power to devices and operates them through the tablet), and the mini one is a slave (i.e. it lets you access the device as mass storage through another).
Other than that I'm not sure. I'd be interested to know this as well.

It does not.
I don't think that most USB ports provide enough juice to charge a battery like the G-Tab's, so they probably just didn't bother making it a possibility. My friend's iPad requires a wall wart, too.

It will absolutely not charge through either of those ports because it was not wired that way. DO NOT TRY FORCING THIS or you will in all likelihood destroy your tab.
Hopefully a basic cable that attaches to the dock port will allow charging via usb, even if it's a slow trickle charge.
Someone here said that the SanDisk Sansa cable fits in our dock port, but I can't recall if it worked at charging or not, though I'm sure if it did we'd be all over it.
USB voltage < gTab voltage
Per the Viewsonic web site the gTab operates at 7.4V and comes with a 12V charger. USB charges at up to 5V iirc. Maybe the gTablet is set up to charge one cell of the battery at a time, but I really wouldn't count on it. Likely the battery charging system isn't even connected to the USB ports at all (but I've been wrong before).
I say you give it a shot. In addition, I will offer you $25 for it, plus shipping, after you are done. I want to try removing the anti-glare layer as an experiment.

[Q] Faster wall charger

Is it possible for some ebay brand company to come out with a faster charger AKA rapid charger? I'm talking electronically is it possible without damaging the unit.
I'm sure that's one of the first things I'd buy if it came out, a faster adapter or an AC type adapter instead of a USB form wall charger. The fact that I had my tablet charging at 6:05pm and now it is 11:22pm (roughly 5.5 hours) and still isn't at 100% is rather really annoying. I can live with it but I certainly wouldn't mind if some new rapid charger came out that allowed charging to be done in 2 hours or so like the Moto Xoom or Toshiba Thrive.
Your battery is charging slow because it also takes 10hrs to discharge under heavy usage. You can't expect to have your battery charge in 1hr and be used 24, right? I don't understand why you want to have it charge faster... leave it charge over the night like everyone else does it.
I think this is not right at all, my netbook is discharching in about 10 hours and the charge time is at least about 3 hours

So is it confirmed that other cables do not charge as fast as the Sony EC21?

There is so much information contradicting this that is hard to follow.
To me the stand is not important but I do want the cable. If speeds is bad on the other or any other risks like being able to connect inverse etc, then I rather pay for the DK30 and get it over with.
Also, I have seen some cheap adapters only to which you can connect any usb cable. That would be awesome but the fact I dont see them mention much implies they are not good...or not?

I have used both the EC21 and the knockoff magnetic cable and I do not see a difference in the ones that I have as far as charging is concerned. They both charge at the same rate regardless of which block I use which im starting to think is dependent on how much the phone wants to take in and not so much which block I use. I have tried a galaxy S3 charging block, stock XZU block, and the first gen ipad block and they all show the same charging speeds despite the difference in amperage. Can anyone else verify this for me? I know the ipad block should charge the phone faster since its a 2.1A block, but I am not seeing the speed. I have seen others get charging times around 2 hours and under but mine is no where near those times as it takes upwards of 3 hours to get from 35% to full.

Since these Chinese knock-offs don't have official names, thus making their identification difficult, we would never know for sure which types people are talking about.
But I have one at home, one at office (EC-21 and copy) and they do charge at different rates.
Even thought the copy version is more user friendly due to stronger magnets, I can tell you that EC-21 charges to the phone to full from any % in under 4 hours. Same cannot be said for the copy, which does have a thinner cable.
I have woken up from a 6 hour sleep a few times to find my phone not fully charged. (yes, all apps were closed and nothing should have been sucking the power)
I have seen 2 variants of EC-21
Ones that come with the DK-30 dock, which cannot charge from USB ports on PC, and the EC-21 sold as EC-21, without the dock. This type has a chunkier USB connector which allows you to connect to PC and charge.
The one I have is the cable-only EC-21

as far as the EC21 cable, I took mine out of the DK30 dock since my phone now fits in between both adapters.
I've never woken up to a not fully charged phone when using the knockoff one. I did notice it took longer to fully charge when I use knockoff at work with generic 1.0A block at work, but that's because I have music streaming as well as instant messages flooding in, so that isn't surprising.
after you mentioned that your knockoff cable had a thinner cable, I checked mine and saw that it was a hair thinner but almost the same thickness. I have attached pictures. is that what you're talking about in terms of "thinner"?

It is hard to judge whether the thickness of the cable is the same for my knockoff, but I can say that my knock off is not the one you have posted the link for. The differences I can see though, are that the USB connector on mine is smaller, whereas the one you posted has the beefier/chunkier USB connector, suggesting that this cable allows it to charge via USB ports on PCs (the one on ebay you posted has the USB connector part looking similar in size to my EC-21, the version which is not the one included in the DK-30 set). Also the magnetic connector is a bit bigger on my knockoff (probably explaining the better sticking power to my Z Ultra compared to EC-21)
I forgot to mention in previous post that the only factor influencing the charge rate is the cable itself, because I have 2 x original Sony chargers (same model)

Just got my xzu. Been reading and searching for a genuine magnetic charging cable. From what I have read there is no official magnetic charger cable made by Sony. So is something like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Son...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item461de4c1f1 fake?

Wireless Charger

Has anyone had success getting wireless charging to work on the 6T? Before you start, I know, it's not built in. I mean with one of those little cards you plug into the bottom and slip between the phone and case. I have a 10w capable charging pad I'd like to use. The receiver I got doesn't seem to go in far enough. When plugged in to my old 3T, it will charge wirelessly and it doesn't go all the way into the phone unlike the 6T. I noticed that with the official OP charging cable there is a little click when inserting when then and only then it will charge. I can't get the receiver in far enough before bottoming out to get that click. Or would current output not be high enough on the receiver for the phone to recognize?

I have been using wireless charging since day one. No issues at all. Lay it on wireless charger at night. Wake up to full charge. No need to charge through out the day cause battery is fantastic. This is the one I use.

Thank you! Just ordered one.
What is the point of using that thing are you guys saying you keep it plugged into the phone all day long? Wouldn't that get in the way or be annoying?

This phone can pretty much be charged once a day with the way most of us are using it. Having it slowly charge over night with wireless charging may be less straining in the battery. I'm tempted but so far I just charge to around 80% at night before bed and unplug overnight.
I was looking at that one on Amazon. Seems like the gold one on there may be better?
My question is, if you have to plug the wireless charging card into your USB C port anyway, does that defeat the entire purpose? Not dissing it or anything, that's very subjective, but.....

Just remove cable. No big deal I have done this. Plus I don't use the dongle only Bluetooth headphones.
The reason that I use a wireless charging receiver pad plugged into my usb-c is because I've seen more than one of them go bad on other phones.
Besides the power button, the next most likely part of a phone to fail is its charge port. Likely because of sheer mechanical wear and tear on both these components. Which is why I use gestures to turn on and off my display, and that wireless receiver.
However, it's not without drawbacks:
- I'm not sure that having something perpetually plugged in doesn't stress the port much less than taking something in and out. But I figure it does.
- It's a pain to use the port for anything else, like otg drives or wired headphones or adb
- dash charging is WAY faster than wireless

Why would you like to have a wireless charger? The cable charging is amazing is so fast. I normally charge round at 30 percent and I went to play battlefield 5 two games my phone will be fully charged is so fast. Not worth it to get a wireless charger. But is your phone do what you want I'm just here to give you a opinion lol

Does it work if I have the terminal with the original red case?
Lack of wireless charging is my only real gripe with the 6T. This sounds like a good solution if you never plan to use the USB port. I like the quick wired charging but having the option for wireless would be a good feature. How hard could it have been for OnePlus to add? Is the back case metal? It looks like glass to me.
Just easier for me to plug in my USB-C slow charger. Not sure what the advantage is to doing this. If you put it between the back of the phone and a case, I get it. Just plugging it into a USB-C wireless receiver seems like a waste of 15 -20 bucks for zero gain. At least for me.
I bought this one so I can still charge it if needed. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QNW32V4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
