I have not sold my old Galaxy Tab 7 yet and I already have my shiny, new and rooted Tablet S.
I keep my movies on my networked media tank on my LAN and I stream movies to my tablets over the network within the house.
I managed to load the cifs.ko module and mount the network media player on both units. I use BS Player Lite on both units (although I have also tried mobo player and mx player on the Tablet S).
So here is my question: The Galaxy Tab is able to play even 1080p mkv's without breaking sweat, basically anything I can throw at it, whereas the Tablet S struggles with some of the 720p mkv's and cannot even start the 1080p ones without freezing. Is this normal behaviour? Is it because the screen has a greater resolution and the Tablet S has to work so much harder than the 1024x600 Galaxy Tab?
The Tegra 2 CPU used in the Tablet S struggles with HD content encoded using H.264 and the High profile. It's a known limitation.
For videos you encode yourself using H.264/x264, you should use the Main profile.
For downloaded HD content that is already encoded using the high profile we're all out of luck
I usually use MX Player Pro on my tablet, but I've tried Dice Player and it is somewhat better at playing high profile stuff, so you may want to give that a try.

When it comes to HD video playback the Exynos 3110 CPU used in the Galaxy Tab has the upper hand, yes. I was a bit surprised to find out that the Tegra 2 wasn't better at video decoding myself. And no, AFAIK it's not just a driver issue, so it can't be fixed through software/firmware.
Heh. Thanks again! This is a real eye-opener. To tell you the truth it never occured to me to check whether a newer chipset / tablet would actually have lower performance than the previous generation. One would think they upped the resolution of these tablets to 1280x800 to meet 720p HD requirements....
I'm using Dice Player, it has HW acceleration.
I was mildly disappointed with the Sony's high-res Video playback capabilities after I also upgraded from my venerable GT-P1000 Galaxy Tab. Now I use MX Video Player and it seems to do alright, but the Sony's hardware accelerated mode as mentioned above is very finicky about its x264 video.
Also, even if an app claims to be hardware accelerated, chances are extremely good it's probably not. Built-in Hardware Acceleration won't go live until ICS and when video players use the "Hardware Decoding" option (note that its not the same), they just use the Sony's built-in chip and all the video players will deal with it pretty much the same.

I use Real Player and Mobo Player and have rarely any problems.
A help if you are having issues is to shut down all of the unneeded apps, clear out your ram and shut off the data connection.

So I currently have a Thrive but looking to get a Flyer since I miss my old 7 inch Samsung tab and how portable it was but I have a couple questions?
1. Is there a difference between the wifi HTC flyer and Sprint's Evo View other then the 3g radio? (different rom, codecs, stock apps, color?)

The Stock ROMs are the same for wifi or 3g.
The processor is not Tegra 2 so cannot run Tegra specific apps.
Other than Samsung proprietary apps, anything that ran on the Sammy 7 should run even better on the Flyer.
As of yet if you flash to HC, you cannot go back on US wifi only models, that is being worked. All the HC ROMs have pretty much the same features and issues as they are all built from the same leaked base.
There is HDMI out via the MHL Micro USB port, requires small MHL to HDMI adapter.
As far as I know BB has the best price.
the stylus is neat, there is a Ebay source for $30.
The speakers are good, the internal Mic is excellent.

1. Yes. 3G Flyer is GSM, for AT&T, T-Mobile, stuff like that. Evo View is only for Sprint, and Wifi is, well, Wifi only.
2. No there is no way to go back. @globatron is working on a downgrade method, but it is not complete yet.
3. Well if it is a game made specifically for the Tab's hardware then it may or may not run. But most apps (non-gameloft) will work fine, even better than the Tab.

6. Speakers are amazing. They work great, no fuzz or anything.
7. HC, I don't know, all ROMS are really almost the same. GB Roms, IMHO, LeeDroid + FlyHigh are the best, they are both fast and have good Overclocks. Westfire is OK. This is personal choice.
8. Tegra 2 is hardware. The Flyer doesn't have Tegra 2, so no go.
9. Best Buy. Flyer for $299, Pen from ebay they are pretty cheap.
As far as video formats, the Flyer supports all the standard Android supported formats. The stock player will only play standard formats that it has built-in codecs for.

aac, .amr, .ogg, .m4a, .mid, .mp3, .wav, .wma (Windows Media Audio 9)
HTC Flyer Supported Video formats
3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3)
The stock player does not recognize the .mkv extension. That does not mean there is not a comparable accelerated codec necessarily.

AVI and MKV are not formats, they are containers and it depends on what is actually inside. For example a .mkv file could contain a standard mp4 format. For non-standard formats there are a number of 3rd party players on the android market that will play just about anything but if it does not match a hardware codec, performance may be degraded, but it will play.
If you are rooted, you can install ChainFire3D, which has a Tegra-2 plugin. If it works, you'll be able to run Tegrazone games.
I've not actually tried it on my Flyer as I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus TF anyway, but did use it on my 7" Galaxy Tab and it worked fine.

I had bought Samsung galaxy tab 10.1
I am having problem with playing movie 1080p BluRay x264 and also sometime with the full hd movies downloaded from bangbros and realityking site.
the movies are playing with pause what i can say playing slow.
I think galaxy tab 10.1 is HD then why its is not able to play. on the other hand same movies and running smoothly on my Samsung galaxy s2.
If I need to do anything.
one more thing I want to inform my s2 is rooted and tab10.1 is not.
Can't compare the two devices as they use different processors and therefore have different degrees of support for hardware decoding. The tablet is on the shorter end of the stick but you can encode files at 720p that play beautifully on it. Want to be able to throw any old video downloaded off the Web at 1080p at it? look elsewhere, regardless of what Samsung marketed it to be able to do it's just not cut out to do that.

I have search xda and the net but I have not seen a solution or maybe just did not search well, but I'm trying to stream a full HD file (.m2ts) from my nas, When it starts, the video starts stuttering, I have try different plays that were mention here but nothing. I also have read that it is not possible to play it on the gs2. I just bought my young son a no name brand, cheep ass 7" tablet from china for 60 euros, this thing has a 1.2 arm7 processor, 512mb ram, and this thing can stream HD file (.m2ts) no problems. My gs2 has much better hardware then this cheep ass tablet!
Is there a solution that I mist?

I need a media player and rather than get a wdtv live, i'm thinking of purchasing an android stick as it has the bonus of apps etc.
I've seen loads of different sticks, such as MK808, MK809, MK809ii, MK809iii, MK908.
To be perfectly honest, I'm confused as to which is the BEST stick in terms of hardware/stability/software.
I want to be able to watch hd movies, play games and connect external storage. such as usb stick or hdd.
Which make/model is the latest so far? What can you recommend?

cx918 and mk908 are from the new generation of pen-TV based on RK3188 chip, all the others you cited in yur original message are based on RK3066 chip.
RK3188 is a 1.6-1.8ghz quad core chip, RK3066 is a 1.2-1.5ghz dual core chip, thus the first is a lot faster.
cx918 has a slightly better wifi than mk908.
Rasperry PI is A LOT less powerfull than both but its also a lot better optimized so it actually outperform both sometimes.

My main concern is Movies - I'm looking for a device which can play almost anything you throw at it and can play HD resolutions smoothly. But as you can understand, I want more and therefore the option for installing games/apps would be an added bonus.

for movie playing, PI - rk3066 based ones struggles with 1080p content and rk3188 ones firmware still are pretty green while Pi's excellent hardware acceleration implementation plays even 1080p high rate content without any problem.
for some games/apps PI is a bit underpowered while RK3188 is a pretty powerfull chip, better than tegra 3 or samsung exynos 4412 (not at snapdragon 4 or cortex A15 level tho).
Pi has a perfect linux implementation while RK ones are still at an early stage.
not easy to chose, each has its strong and low points.
at least they are cheap.

Well in that case it leaves me with a dilemma. Just to clarify, I would be more than happy to stick with 720p movies as it's mainly for kids (whom can't tell the difference between 720p or 1080p, lol!), if the R3188 can handle them smoothly...what would you say? If it definately can handle them smoothly, then what about compatibility of file formats?
File formats should all work. Even at 1080p. If not there is always the play store and MX player has run everything I've thrown at it on my $20 MK802

Thanks plznote. You said your MK802 has ran everything you've thrown at it, which is great, but what about smoothness of movie playback in 720p???

I don't watch netflix movies...it's mainly mkv, mp4 and youtube videos.
So what is 720p movie playback like on the android stick(s)? Is it smooth? Any minor issues?

It is only 1GHz, but the GPU plays 4k video with 120Mbps bitrate and 3D blueray output.

If you play from a usb disk it should work like a real charm, but I don't know about the wifi speed, it doesn't have an external antenna. I'm sure playing that 4k file through wifi won't be so smooth.
If you can get a device with this chipset and a gigabit wired connection, go for it.

If your main concern is video, I think this is hands down the best device.
It is a quite new chip, so maybe that's why you haven't heard about it.

For what I've read, there's little difference in the sticks with the same processor. At the moment, the RK 3188 chip seems to be the new standard. There are a few sticks that have it. I've just bought the Imito QX 1: the reason was the simple fact that the former models of Imito were nice, it had good reviews and because it has a metal plate (and no plastic) on the back, which is sort of the heatsink. On top of that, you can attach a normal passive heatsink, which seems to be enough to cool the processor... It then can run the 1080p kernel. Not many sticks have 1080p kernels...Finless (known for the finless roms), did a review on the build quality and he was pleasantly surprised! Mainly because of the heatsink option and of the fact that there can be an external antenna attached to it.
I've read, that for now, there is no hardware acceleration possible for the RK 3188 chip, but maybe in time... And are there ways to play 1080p movies, without HW acceleration? For now I've still got my RBPI...

I can't posts links here, but see my former remark for offers... there is an usb 2.0 connection on it... just google on specs and you'll find out yourself. But yes, every stick has the ability to attach an external hdd and even more, you can connect it to your NAS.
Don't let things like weak wifi reception on other models fool you. You can order a usb to rc45 cable for 4 euro's.
XBMC is possible, but as mentioned before, it has been optimized for machines like the rbpi. All rk 3188 sticks suffer from the fact that HW accelleration is not YET supported...
The only downside from this stick, for what I've seen now that it is a pain to hook up to your stereo, since there is no audio out connection on the device... Few sticks have it, but the android media boxes have more connections. So you won't have to buy a seperate powered usb hub.
Please be aware that a 2 amp converter is desired, when running this device.
Last thing... the Imito stick has a separate bluetooth and wifi chip. for what I know, this is kind of unique, because most devices have a 'two-in-one' chip. But not sure on this one. Anyone?

did anybody tried to read 2160p Main10 HDR videos on this new Tab S3. I'm using the Asus Zenpad 3 S10 Z500M which reads everything including H.265 2160p Main 10, and would like to swap to Samsung Tab.
Can any Tab S3 owner go to demo uhd 3d website and test some heavy 4k h.265 10 bits 60fps videos?
Also 2160p 60fps Big Buck Bunny h.264 video which is a very heavy one?
I just downloaded a few HEVC HDR 10 4k from that website and they all played perfectly

I tried the 'Big Buck Bunny' one for you. It was unsuccessful at playing it fluidly. Very jittery and unwatchable. This was with MX player on HW+

I've tried this video on a lot of tablets, ARM and X86 SoC, and it was always the same. The bit rate is too high for those systems. Only Quad Core PC can handle this.

The 60fps NASA HDR was one that I tried, it played great. I was playing them with the built-in (Samsung) video player.
The S3 UHD videos are recorded in H.264.

I got my Tab S3 2 days ago.
I've tested with MX PLAYER all heavy HEVC HDR videos, 10 bits UHD 2160p @60fps, and of course all other formats and bitrates.
EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT. All in HW or HW+.
Even the AVC h.264 UHD 2160p @60fps "Big Buck Bunny" works perfectly and fludly in HW+ (jonathonalexander told it didn't work fluidly???).
This Tab S3 is a must!
Also tested European version of Galaxy S8 with Exynos 8895 and it's able to read excatly the same video files as Tab S3 with absolutly no jitter.
Both Tab S3 and Galaxy S8 claim to work HDR file formats and it's true.
