Can't change voicemail to Google Voice - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've seen some other people say they had this problem, but no solution other than "I did it a lot and then it worked". When I go to change the voicemail provider I get the warning/error, hit yes, and get "forwarding number failed to change". Does anyone know how I can get this to work?

you need to manually put your gvoice number in forwarding options. this will change your carrier number to gvoice, but carrier name won't chahne. don't worry gvoicemail will work thou. I assume you are on stock. Also, check the ATT visual voicemail thread somewhere here it was also discussed there.

hmm I changed it to my access number already, and that didn't work... I'll try again and check out the att vvm threads. Thanks

No voicemail number

I'm using a rooted Bell S2 (with Galaxy_S Unlock) on Telus.
I can't access my voicemail as no number is being read off the SIM.
The error is: "No voicemail is stored on SIM"
If I choose ADD NUMBER you can't add anything.
Anyone else run into this problem and if so, how did you fix it.
Much thanks!
Same problem here. I have just stored the Voicemail number in my contacts.
Go to Menu, Settings, Call, Voicemail, Voice mail number. You can edit the number there.
Amazingly simple Thanks
You're welcome

i was hoing there was an easy way of doing it on the SGS2

[Q] Issues with voicemail?

This maybe due to my "upgrading" SIM cards at T-mo earlier today, but my new Amaze is not allowing me to set up Google Voice or utilize the Visual Voicemail preinstalled features and keeps directing me to call 611. Google Voice sends back an error stating "Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings." When I click on Voicemail Settings it looks bad. The page doesnt load up (ie appears greyed out, with a jumble of numbers at the top where my phone # should be. Anyone else having similar issues? My first guess is either an issue with Sense or T-Mo.

If you try to open VM Settings does it look normal, or is it all greyed out and the number all jumbled?
mines not greyed out. double check and run the setup a few times, maybe itll work through. mine said some error, but i dont have anything greyed out actually. i check mine with the google voice app itself, so i dont see it as an immediate issue (for me at least)
I went from the LG G2x to this device and I had GVoice on that. The voice app failed to set call forwarding options for me, too, when I first installed it on the Amaze4G but becuase they are subscriber specific with the carrier, and not the device it doesn't matter.
If you go through google voice web site and go through the settings you can get the call forwarding codes and dial it from the device and it will accomplish the same thing and work fine.
I was on the phone with TMO this morning about a network issue happening with my phone that's unrelated to voicemail. In investigating potential service issues they mentioned that Seattle and the surrounding area has a new visual voicemail system issue. It could be that. I'm not sure if that's specific to my location or if they rolled out something service wide.

Any way to reassign a different voicemail number to #1 key on dialpad?

When I long press the #1 key on the dialpad, it dials the AT&T system voicemail number. I am using Google Voice for my voicemail services, and I would like to be able to call in to GV using the #1 key, to access my account, but can't seem to find any way to change the phone number assignment for that key. Is it possible to change it, and if so, how? Thanks.
Don't know if its this easy on yours but on my I9100 you go in to 'settings', then 'call', then at the bottom 'voicemail'.
That's how I change my voicemail number anyway

Thanks for the reply. When I go there, I have two options: Voicemail number (which has my Google Voice number), and Sign out. When I press on Voicemail number, I get an error message "Error-forwarding number change failed." Can't do anything else.
BTW, my phone is an I727 Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.
First off you should have started with stating a phone model that is essentially operator phone (only rogers and att) so who knows what's locked or not. Second make sure your operator supports gsm standard codes and has call forwarding option. Don't have att so iono? Third, your phone has its own subforum so best ask there. Good luck!

Google Voice voicemail assistance

I've been working at getting the voicemail for my first Android device, the SGH-i777, switched to GVoice for a bit now and I can't seem to get it working.
During the setup process [account selection, etc.] it goes to setup the voicemail and I get this error that reads:
"Error
Forwarding number changed failed"
So I found another route via the web interface with the string of numbers that reads: *004*googlenumber#.
Upon entering that in the dialer, I get:
"Call forwarding
Connection problem or invalid
MMI code
conditionally for All Basic Services"
Then I found a lead, on disabling all the settings under "Settings -> Call -> Call forwarding -> Voice Call". That gives me two errors:
"Unable to deactivate call diverting for unanswered calls. Unsupported by operator"
&
"Unexpected response from network."
Online, the web interface does show:
"Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone"
This is occurs when the device is stock and rooted, and running a new ROM. I've also tried deleting and re-adding my phone's number to my list of phones and reinstalling the GVoice app. [NOTE: It's stock and rooted right now though]
Ideas?
Check if the call can go into the voicemail message system first. If not, I will call ATT to reset the condition forwarding.
I do have a real AT&T voicemail setup and I can call it and leave a message [from another phone of course].
As for the condition forwarding, where should I take that? Tech Support via customer care? I did have to get on with tech support after they didn't switch my voicemail over from the iPhone's to a "standard" voicemail service.

Squid,
I am trying to help you here but I may have misunderstood some things that you said. Anyways, I had gVoice forwarding my voice mail just fine - actually, against my will because I wanted to stay with ATT voice and only use gVoice for text messages. Thus, if you go into settings>call>call forwarding - what does it say there? List your google number or does it list your ATT voice number? In my case it listed my google voice phone number and not my carrier number. I changed that back to my carrier, but maybe you go the opposite route. Sorry if I missed your point.

When I go "Settings -> Call -> Call Forwarding" there's another option in there with "Voice Call". There's then 4 lines, "Always Forward", "Forward When Busy", "Forward When Unanswered", "Forward When Unreachable". All of those [EXCEPT "Always Forward"] have text that reads "Forwarding to [presumably the AT&T voicemail number]".
I couldn't disable it manually, but I see where your going with it. Sadly, I cannot change any of the settings in there. Refer to the OP when I mention the lead on "disabling" the settings.

ok. Have you tried to uninstall gvoice, reboot, and re-install? Probably did, just saying.

Yes I have. I've tried a bunch of things.
But amazingly, I get to close this thread now! I called up AT&T and asked about conditional call forwarding and the guy walked me through a bunch of stuff. What ended up being the issue was the number set for the 'conditionals' in call forwarding and the "carrier number" for the voicemail [just below the radio button to select Google Voice] were different by one digit. Changing the carrier number to match the conditionals let the whole operation happen smoothly.
So, thanks to the two of you who responded!

Glad it works for you! Just for my information, the "conditional" is in which menu - call forwarding? I can't find a "conditional" option. I am sure this will come up again sometimes, so I try to fully grasp it. Thanks man!
I don't understand. I've had this same problem since I got my new phone, the SGH-i727 Skyrocket. My number in the carrier setting exactly matches the number for the "conditionals"... So what gives? I'm rooted and running a custom ROM, but the issue was present before I ever rooted, when I was stock.
I had some issues setting mine up, I am also rooted. Have you tried looking at voice.google.com -> Settings -> Phones -> Mobile and seeing if its checked or even there?
Also I reinstalled all the google apps so that might have also helped.
I had a similar problem. I'm guessing you have the Google voice app installed? I would try to reset to defaults the dialer info.
Try this
1. Remove Google app.
2. Clear dialer and dialer storage cache
3. When you go to dialer, the settings should be reset. Configure it as if you have no Google voice.
4. Install Google voice, but make sure you have both WiFi internet and cell phone reception.
5. Hopefully it succeeded, regardless go to the dialer --> Preference --> voice-mail handler for me its either Google voice, or voice mail, or none(dial voice number)
Like wise if you have the number is correct on the Google voice website and you have configured the phone with the app try entering this code. Remember the number is your Google voice mail.
Remove the dashes, and the X's correspond to the Google number, these are to be entered on the standard dialer. I do recommend this be your last step

not trying to revive a dead thread, but I was going at this all night and nothing worked, (new gs3 ATT)
have used gv for everything for a long time now and nothing has worked with this phone.
Went through and tried all the stuff above, and finally I tried putting in the mmi code in the dialer as *004*(area code and number)# and it went like normal, like a regular nexus phone.
This is without the "1" before the are code.
It went through fine and changed all the forwarding numbers in the forwarding menu, and set GV as voicemail.
The reason is that inside the phone- settings- voicemail-setup, you get what looks like a GB screen with your google voice number without the +1 infront of it, and no way to change it I don't think.
this is what the guy above was taking about I think with the att person on the phone. I hope this helps someone, I could have used it yesterday

Not sure if you're trying to be a smartass or not, but....either way this is the i777 forum. Post in the forum relative to your device.
why are you guys so touchy about specific forums? Looking for help from wherever it comes from is a good thing.
That little clue about numbers matching would have helped me yesterday, regardless of what phone I was using. ANd it will help someone in the future.
If it was an htc forum I might have said something different, but I still would have said something.
Telling someone to gtf out of your forum for no good reason is just silly.
Everyone is here to help. That's all there is. If no one needed help, there wouldn't be an XDA.
but ya, I'll stay out of your guy's forum. not that I post alot or anything.
Don't choke on your lollypop
And here I thought I was being nice. I don't remember telling anyone to gtfo....I simply said to post in your phones forum. Well good luck. Happy flashing.
All I said was that this isn't the S3 section. Was that so wrong? Many things are device dependent. So many things can't be given support for unless you have our device.

[Q] [Error] Changing Voicemail Number?

I am having trouble changing the voicemail number on my Galaxy S2. At present pressing the voicemail speeddail does nothing other then prompting me to add my voicemail number and directs me to the settings app.
If I try to change it in Settings > Call settings, I get the error message 'Voice Mail Number change unsuccesful'. But no real reason why it happens and its annoying me greatly as I can't clear my voicemail counter without it and what not >_<
Tried power cycling and what not and neither of it has helped, so has anyone of you gotten any idea as to how I can add it to my phone or fix that stupid error. Any help or advice short of doing a full reset is more then welcome, and I do hope someone might be able to help me....
Thanks in advance.
There is a copy of your voice mailbox number on the sim card that may conflict with what you are trying to do.
Talk to your provider, they can flush your mailbox and allow you to reset the number.
How can they flush my sim card, or am I reading your comment wrong?.
Just for clarifying I changed provider on my phone and I am unsure wether the error happened during that change since I can't remember fiddling with the voicemail bit before the last couple of days and running into that error.
they can flush the settings for your voicemail on their server which will allow you to make changes to your voice mail account.
Well they tried something which advertantly didn't work >_<. But apparently the voicemail number isn't even on my simcard.
They tried even more stuff >_<.
And when I press and hold #1 on my phone it says there isnt a voicemail number on my sim. But trying to change it through settings it still says "Voicemail Number changed unsuccesful"
I have the same problem. Did you find a solution?
At the moment I have limited the issue to being operator dependant. Because I have the issue on one sim from my regular provider, while trying two other providers simcards doesnt cause this error.
Next on list is to try another simcard and then go digging in the phone to see what might be causing it. But I will be pinging you if I find the solution.
dnesdlrow, where are you from and what provider do you use?.
I've got the same problem. I flashed to a custom & now there is no voicemail number on my SIM card.
I called customer service and the gave me a 10 digit number to plug in. They said the number is different for everyone so if anyone else has the same trouble you can simply call your carrier.
You need to put in your carriers specific voice mail number. For example I am on O2 UK and mine is 901.
Use google of contact your carrier for the number.

Hello,
I had a similar issue. I changed the plan on my phone, and afterward the voicemail didn't work when I did a long press on the #1 button. It kept saying that there was no voicemail number, and when I tried to enter it into the settings manually it kept saying "Voicemail number change unsuccessful."
I called Rogers and they gave me a new voicemail number; I could dial it and set up my voicemail, but when I tried to program it into the dedicated #1 speed dial spot, I still could not change it. I tried copying it to my SIM card and adding it as a contact to select for the speed dial slot, but that didn't work either. I suspected that this new number was conflicting with the SIM card, so I went to Rogers and asked for a new one. Despite some resistance, they gave it a shot, and it worked perfectly thereafter. Just be sure to copy your contacts over to your phone before getting a new SIM!
I hope this solution works for others too!
Cheers and good luck!
Help please ...
I too am trying to set my voicemail for the speed dial "1" key.
while at the keypad screen:-
menu-> call setting -> scroll to the heading "voicemail", option "voicemal service", is set default to "my carrier".
I then choose to change the "voicemail settings" -> "voicemail number", and enter the new voicemail number to dial, press ok .... and this is where the problem is...
When I press OK ... I get the following error "Voicemail number change unsuccessful"
I would like to to have this number changed , as every time manually dial my voicemail number it constantly ask for my password.
Why is this happening, I have purchased this phone outright, it is model type i9300, running Android 4.1.2.
Hopefully this can be an easy fix...?
PS...
This also causes a problem with Australian virtual mobile carriers, like Amaysim, Kogan, Aldi, who use Telstra & Optus as there underlying carriers, and and also will cause issues when travelling abroad, because you will not be able to access your voicemail if the number can not be changed to the full international dialing equivalent..
Also Can't Change the Voicemail number
I'm running a non-rooted, GS3 from VZW. Running 4.1.2.
The current voicemail number is *86 (Verizon's). I'd like to change it because I'm abroad and *86 is not my carrier's voicemail number. Every time I go to Phone, Call Settings, Voicemail Settings, and edit the number to the local one, I get "Error: Voicemail number change unsuccesful."
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Same problem still
I'm on an S4 Mini with cm11 m6 and habe the same problem with a German T-Mobile card. I can easily dial the number 3311. Why can't I simply assign that to the #1 key?
