[Q] Download mode first time starts a download. Normal? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i first got my phone back from repair i wanted to use download mode to put the CWM in and flash it. But when i first did it it started a download process is it normal?
2.3.6

What download process exactly?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

In the middle
" Downloading ....
Do not turn off target"
It has some writing on the top left too would you like to know what it says?

nothing is downlading...it by default shows like that...when you start download from ODIN you can see the WRITING PROCESS TIMELINE under that logo
Could you please elaborate how do you put the CWM in while on the Download mode

Yep, as above. That is download mode. Now your try to connect to Odin (kill lies first). Edit: kies not lies (stupid Swype)

Oh Im just following these instructions.
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
Im sorry its just my first time doing anything like this xD

yes instruction is correct,
Make sure dirvers are installed, Kies to be killed,
once you connected the phone to PC (connect to mother board USB socket backside)
the ID:COM box will be highlighted in yellow, and in the message box you can see "added"
Good luck...

Do you kill kies first then go into download mode?

Odin must identify your phone first like said above..
uninstall the Kies, download the latest version from Samsung install after a PC reboot, after install reboot PC, (kill means not unistall, close the applicaion, also check in your system tray)

if you have successfully flashed correct CF-root from ODIN, thats it, next is your duty to google for rooted applications.....
@ UpInTheAir : for my knowledge if I am not correct,
Download mod itself is a debugging mode, not essenstial to do it from Menu...
the people who did not enable the debugging mod and bricked the phone or stuck on boot logo have been flashing ROMs by enterin into download mod without any treble...

@ZACQ8
Thanks i installed a custom rom now and its working fine and dandy.
One last question. Could you point me to where i can find how to check flash counter and reset it? and re flashing stock roms increase flash counter? or really how do i get everything ready so i can return my phone to repair if the time calls?

to reset counter you need a Jig and old bootloader to flash, if the current one is new...

thats whats coming up on my phone after my pc crashed while i was trying to flash a firmware on odin
now odin doesnt see my phone when i put it in download mode and if i try to enter recovery mode i just get
"firmware update encountered an error please use kies to enter recovery "
i have no problem getting my phone into download mode i just cant get odin to see it to be able to flash a firmware .

i followed this thread and it said to uninstall kies as it sometimes interferes with odin
odin wasnt seeing my phone when kies was installed and still not seeing it with kies uninstalled either
Yes it interferes with Odin. Just open your task manager and quit all tasks related to kies. Kies doesn't like Odin being able to do all the amazing flashing.
Chris.

This should not happen... if it does... I'm guessing it's because... when you use kies, USB debugging should be off. And when you use Odin... you should enable USB debugging.
(This way has NEVER failed me... or anyone else I know. Otherwise something else must be up)

chris thanks but i even switched off my pc and and nothing in tassk manager is running related to kies
but thanks anyway
Because when you uninstalled kies, you probably removed the usb drivers you need. Try to re-install it and make sure you phone is in debugging mode after... before using odin.
If you don't want to install the drivers with kies, then you need to download and install the samsung drivers yourself.

I don't think that's true. To flash via Odin, you just need drivers installed (with Kies installation, or stand-alone driver installation), and the phone needs to be in download mode. If these conditions are met and the phone is connected to the computer via USB, and Odin still doesn't see the phone, you may need to try another computer.
lol. Are you trying this while the phone is plugged in via usb? Try unplugging it first... then go into download mode... then start odin and then plug in your phone.

i was flashing a firmware and in the middle of it loading onto my phone ,my pc shut down my phone wont boot up . when it starts up it comes up with
two little pc's and it says firmware update encountered an error please use kies to enter recovery
i can get the phone into download mode but kies doesnt see the phone neither does odin .
if i try to enter recovery mode by holding down power ,home and volume up it comes up with the same message about the firmware error .
hope this explains it

SGS2 got bircked after trying to root!

hello,
I just got SGS2 (I9100 model), it had costumed operator rom, which I wanted to root.
The android version was 2.X.X, and the kernel name was something with "KG2",
* so I downloaded the right CF-ROOT (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4, also tried with CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4)
* entered it to "PDA" section in ODIN 1.85
* entered to "Download Mode" in the phone
* clicked "Start" in Odin.
Odin successfully finished running (it took 42 sec), and the phone rebooted but got stuck on the "Galaxy S II logo" with a warning triangle.
I'm so upset right now. how to revert what i did?

If you can get into download mode use CheckFus to get your latest stock firmware and flash it with Odin. Then write down the firmware version and search for the corresponding CF-Root kernel as you already did for your old firmware.

I'll try the "FIX THE UNFLASHABLE GSII" guide tomorrow and update you.
right now I cant do nothing because the battery is empty and no matter what I cant load it. why it's happening?
some symptoms:
* I can't even got to download mode, it's says that the battery is low. even if the phone connected to the computer
* the computer doesn't recognize the phone, but when it's connected there's a big empty battery pic on the galaxy.
btw, I really think that my windows drivers/usb ports screw me over. (for example kies never recognized my phone and I had other problems with the usb, sometimes it recognized the phone, sometimes not.)

Things to try to charge the battery:
1. remove battery from device for some minutes
2. reinstall battery, connect AC wall charger and watch what happens on the screen
3. charge for at least 3 hours without doing anything else with the device (let it charge even if it does not look like the device is charging)
When the battery is charged:
1. check if entering download mode works again
2. if download mode does not work try with a JIG
When download mode works:
1. uninstall Kies
2. install USB drivers only from here
3. use stock USB cable
4. check if ODIN can connect to device
5. if 1-4 does not work try ODIN from another PC
If all works well, restart by flashing the latest stock firmware for your phone.

How to find the latest stock firmware for my phone?
...
MistahBungle said:
If you can't get into download mode, that's probably a moot point. But, assuming you have and I9100/I9100T, look here, Samfirmware or use the PC version of Checkfus to download the latest stock firmware for your phone model/country/and carrier if you want a carrier branded firmware (you can also often get unbranded country specific firmwares with Checkfus if they are available for your country).

When I''ll get a new battery and hopefully get into download mode, should I just burn this firmware with ODIN? I don't need to root the phone first?
(the original fw was not-rooted)
...
Problem Solved!
in a very simple way, just tried from another computer and stock usb cable.
I flashed original branded Rom and it's just worked.
problem probably was one of those:
* bad windows drivers
* bad usb cable (not likely)
* some other **** got wrong with windows
thank you all

wierd logo showing up on galaxy player 4.0 usa

hello people.
i was trying to flash the kernel from ics 4.0.4 . first i connected it to the computer to flash it from odin. the green thing that was supposed to show up in odin didnt show up. me being dumb, i clicked start on odin for the heck of it. on odin it said fail. on my player there was this weird symbol.
i tried taking out the bettery and then i waited a few seconds. then i turned it on and the same symbol was there. i also tried going into download mode but when i tried it just showed the weird symbol and then turned black and again and again. i also tried going in to recovery which also did the same kind of thing. (bootlooping) . so has anyone experienced this before.
device info:
samsung galaxy player 4.0 (usa version)
terrasilent kernel
rooted
running icyfusion.
any help would be apperciated!
Its basically the same thing as the Download Mode sign. Don't worry about the awkward symbol, just means you are in download mode

He said that it's the same as download mode. For your information this mode is a forced download mode which means that you need to flash something to get over it. In this case a new kernel.

Try these:
1. Be sure to have anything Kies related not running [as a process] in the background (Task Manager alt+ctrl+delete on your computer)
2. Restart your computer and try the same usb port again (Kies process closed again).
3. Try a different USB port.
4. Try a different usb cord (I have over 4 in my home due to phones).
5. Try a different computer (I have two in my home).
Flash your kernal again as this is usually the case the phone dash exclamation sign icon comes up, odin of course.

Make sure you are in odin mode on the device. I came from HTC One and didn't put my device in Odin mode. Duh.. right? lol.
You can get into Odin mode by doing "adb reboot-bootlaoder"
for the best results:
1.use an official Samsung cable
2. unplug all unneeded usb devices
3.reboot into download mode again
4.connect to a usb 2.0 port on the back of the pc
5.run odin as an admin
if that dose not work, make sure kies is removed, and re-install the Samsung drivers,
reboot pc, and try again.
solved similar problem...
reboot your phone into download mode, but yet not proceed, plug into pc, open odin (as administrator), put the firmware files in their respective places, and finally press vol up to proceed in download mode and press start, it must solve, if all else does not help .. hugs
Hope this helps, if so please press "thanks" ..

Thing is kies blocks that connection which you are trying to make. It worked for me as well. All the best.

This worked for me after having so many problems. Nobody was clear on how to fix it. I had soft bricked my phone. It wouldn't connect to Kies or allow any pit or rom being flashed to it. Everything would fail. I tried doing what you said and it worked. I always got the errors 'No pit partition' etc.
I plugged in the USB without the battery in.
Phone wouldn't switch on into recovery without battery in so I put it back in.
I then took it out and Odin wouldn't connect to it and start the process without the battery in so I put it back in.
I loaded up the pit file and started it! You should have seen my face! haha! It worked!
It booted up! Hooray!
I switched it off and booted it in recovery mode.
Installed new rom (hopefully this won't break)
Thank goodness for that. I feel your pain guys. If you need any help just message me.

USB Debugging NOT ENABLED - Phone locked!

Hi,
I was trying to remove any trace that my Samsung i9300 phone had ever been rooted but in the process I forgot to re enable the USB Debugging mode so consequently now I am locked in the download mode & if I try to reboot, the phone states "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."! So as you can hopefully appreciate I am a little peed off with myself & for the life of me I cannot see away out of it so is there anyone out there please who can shine a bit of life on my troubled phone & please do not forget that the USB Debugging is NOT enabled.....
Kind regards with thanks
Phil
UPDATE
I have now tried flashing CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 with Odin3 v1.85, but whilst the phone appears to be making a full recovery & Odin confirms a successful flashing it stops on the black Samsung welcome screen with an exclamation mark to the top left hand corner to the screen, so could anyone advise me what my next step should be please?
flash a stock rom through odin.

when you flashed the ROM, did you unplug the USB connector?
sounds like you bricked your S3 mate
You said that you flashed CF-root?
CF-root flashes recovery and kernel for root access.
Download a full stock rom from sammobile and flash it :good:
USB Debugging has no affect on download mode...
Upon Odin confirming that it was successful it was then & only then did I unplug the USB cable

Given that Odin confirmed that it was successful after the flashing the the latest UK firmware from Sammobile I then unplugged the USB cable, but I then found that the phone hadn't actually finished & instead it stopped on the black Samsung welcome screen & it won't budge from that. This may or may not be the reason for this, but I feel that I may have forgot to enable the USB DEBUGGING, so would this cause the phone not to boot correctly?
As I am unable to boot the phone, I am also unable to enable the USB DEBUGGING, so is there anything that I can do to resolve these issues please?

You say that the USB Debugging has not effect on download mode so why do other users/developers stress that it needs to be enabled?

I have a same problem with OP.
After entered to recovery mode and wiped/cleared cache, I didn't boot the phone, just continue to download mode.
It's mean USB Debugging is not enable after recovery. Now my phone can't boot also can't charge just appear msg:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
Recovery via Kies can't be done because my phone have a problem IMEI=unknown and Baseband=unknown before this happen, so Kies can't recognise the phone. If IMEI is valid and Kies can connect the phone, the problem can be resolved by Kies.
I hope someone here have a good solution how to resolve the problem that ODIN can't reflash the phone because 'USB Debugging' is not enabled in the first place.
