[Q] matching rom and kernel - important or not? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok noob-ish question...
I have a Galaxy Tab S2 GT-I9100 running gingerbread 2.3.3 (VillainRom 1.4.0) and a non-stock kernel after deciding to be brave and update from 2.2 to 2.3. I've decided to use ICS in the form of the codename android version but, so far, I've not found a good recommendation for which kernel to run with it - I don't even know if it makes a lot of difference/is critical/or what as I'm still only learning about flashing roms, etc.. Matr1x kernel along with codename android seemed to be recommended but that was on a Samsung Note not a Galaxy S2 - does it matter?
NB. I have rooted this phone and installed CWM if that helps.
Can anyone advise me please (with links, if possible)
Thanks, Mark

Hey dude,
To make easy, my humble advice is to start with my new tweaked combo : Wanam + AbyssKernel 2.2.
Take a look :
I can easily last 1hour screen on time with 89- 88% left.
AbyssPlug gov + Noop
Extreme UC UV settings.
Bloatware freezed.

What do you think ? Pretty awesome isn't it ?
Best battery life with really nice performance.
Come on, you should try it..
My two cents.

Thanks for that but as there are so many roms available I really wanted to go with ICS and codename android, at least to start with! I'm not keen on making too many changes and experimenting as I'm only a beginner in this field and the last thing I want to do is make loads of changes and brick it by making a mistake. I certainly appreciate all the effort people like you make and it makes life much easier for the rest of us plebs!
Cheers

Do not mix and match kernels and/or ROM's from other devices. Look under the battery and make sure you have an international GT-I9100 and not a varient such as GT-I9100G.
Sent from my Telecommunications Device.

Definitely the international version
Baseband version - I9100BVKH1
Kernal version - 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKH1-CL438706

The reason I mention the Matr1x kernel is that is was listed as a good combo in a page on "codename android on Galaxy S2" but it then went on about the galaxy nexus S. I didn't know whether they were different phones or the same phone with different names in different markets.
Anyhow I need to know if my existing kernel is good with ICS or if there is a better one to use on this phone.
Cheers all!

ICS will be complete with its kernel
Custom ICS kernels are in the dev thread .

I would recommend the ROM in my sig (click on pic). It is AOKP and has lots of features with good support in thread and on OP.

which rom for me

I have just rooted by galaxy s2 using cf root and odin 1.85.
my current firmware is XWKI4, reading through post particularly rooting methds (sroot and cf root), peopple are advised to download firmware which closes matches that of the stock rom, is this correct?
does it matter what kerner (or firmware) the custom rom comes with or does the curtom rom for me has to be xwkI4?
also, phones for my wife so list of most stable rom would be appricated.

No you are fine...You are rooted now so this is were the fun begins. Download a rom that you like and make sure you use recovery to flash it. Before you flash a rom make sure you make a backup of the current one you are on and make sure you back up your applications using Titanium backup. Then go ahead and flash a rom of your choice. Most roms always have a guide in the first page of their thread. Read it carefully and if you have to read it like ten times do so..That way you get a better understanding and at least you know what you are flashing.
Rom there are so many to choose from..Either Checkrom V4 that has a kitchen app or Foxhound. Also if you go in the Android development there are so many other roms there that you can flash...But like i said backup and do your reading first..Happy flashing
thanks for the quick response
I was thinking of trying checkrom or villianrom

Both roms are great. Try them both my friend you are not losing anything..That is the great thing about flashing roms..Try both for a few days and take it from there.
hello,
Well your phone is rooted now, so try what ever rom you like!
Look for the rom that's Best rated (4 or 5 stars).
If you want to stay on ginger, then what you mentioned are good amongst others.
If you like the iPhone look, then Try also the Miui ginger roms, DT Miui ginger is good).
Now if you like to go ICS then I recommandé you the Wanamlite (version 7.2 now), but put in mind that ICS is in 4.0.3 LP2 beta version, therfore still facing some problemes Yet. But it is worth to try.
One big advice though : in All cases, do your backup before, then wipe every thing from the reboot recovery CWM.
I hope this helps.
Best rom for you is the one you test yourself & decide works great for you. A Rom/kernel that works well for me might not work well for you (phone components slightly different, different phone setup, different usage).
Make sure you back up your EFS as well. Best way is with k-tool

It's displayed alongside each thread/ROM in the Development forums. Not sure I'd set too great a store by those though. CheckROM is very reliable.
I wouldn't go anywhere near ICS for your wife - very high maintenance. (The ROM, that is, never met your wife...)

I have to agree with Gustopher here. Go for checkrom and then just install the ICS theme by Vertumus and your wife will a very happy lady.

[KERNEL] Customs Kernel for Dell Venue

Hi Folks,
I create new thread just for easy that we focus on kernel building here and continue with rom on existeing thread
This kernel is almost all standard very minor changed. config based on "prebuilt" Q8650_perf_defconfig. ramdisk is from 408 firmware. I installed 408 rom by olleh (odexed ... duhhhh). No optimation have been made since I have no idea what should be optimized. Give me idea ... LOL
- download zip file from this thread > no heavy since only 3.3 MB flashable via CWM. Get CMW from TheManii (my Guru in android compilation). See the kernel version is x1123

what you get :
- customs kernel
- fully rooted system i.e you can do on fastbot $adb remount to have write access to device.
- suggest flash TheManii Streakdroid4-250 and immediately flash this kernel.
The main reason SD4 250 is hard to install is due to using a stock kernel, it's also the reason I havnt released SD5 250 at all (as there's plenty of alternatives)
If you're willing: just make a kernel with as little changes as possible, but with signature checking disabled for /system apks.
I dont think it's as simple as setting ro.secure=0 as I've made a modified ramdisk and it still fails on modified apks (pretty much every one in SDx 250 as I've added langs back to them)
I dont think I have the time to also learn how to recompile entire kernels, esp since SDx 25x is primarily intended for my own use. But I'd def like to release it with a modified kernal that would allow users to install it easier.
Hi TheManii.
This is my first time recompile linux kernel for android. It is really pain (comparing to recompile for PC). I will check and surf how to do your request. Just currious .. it is the kernel controlling /system/app/*.apk (?) ... need to check and learn kernel code then.
btw installing SD4-250 with default kernel I face FC many times when do setting on sound, receiving incoming calls, connect device to pc via usb port etc. But after flashing my kernel all FC gone ... I personally not sure it is because of kernel. But my venue now run smoothly powered by your SD4-250.
Btw I search on google and no lucks. How to get and add baseband (radio) file on ROM. I succeed to build a plaint rom can live on venue but always lack of GSM function. I dont think it caused by ril.d (ril_htc_d for htc) which is binary (?) or any ril_dell_d ... available
would you release SD5-250 ROM and let us work to do something to make dell venue have more options of customs rom.
Folks,
I can build a version of kernel-v4.06 myself. Run smoothly, no problem found so far. x1123's guide, if strictly followed, can bring such result to you.
It will be the best if you make it little under volt

Battery life

how can i use my s2 i9100g for 2 full days without the need to charge it again?
what kernel, rom, apps do you recommend?
i'm new to this thing but already informed myself. i got the streetware kernel and the original 2.3.6 firmware. i capped the cpu to 300-600 mhz and its good like this but i need an app that autokills services that are hidden. like "Badge Provider" etc. or even better: install a kernel or rom that doesnt include all that ram-eating ****.
.
2 full days without charging
normal usage = no
light usage = no also
flight mode = yes
that is based on my experience.
now im using codeworkx ICS kernel. its quite good for me. quite heavy usage but it last for half day
I/O scheduler: noop
governor: hotplug
autokill services app might consume ur battery more because it have to run again and again.
to kill stock application, maybe u can refer to this
link: SGS2 Removable
credit to the owner (sorry i forgot where i get that from, but im sure its from XDA forum ) but that one is for GB, for ICS im not quite sure. maybe someone in this forum could help us :highfive:
i kinda messep up my s2 and get errors now and there. nothing critical though.
what rom and kernel would others recommend
i'd rather use gingerbread than ics if its better for the battery life. and one more question: can i use i9100 roms on i9100g ?

[Q] How to install Jelly Bean 4.1.1 on Samsung Galaxy S 2 i9100

I tried searching the forum, found a lot of useful information but need to know my options are like which ROM is better / more stable etc and which one works in my case. Also I would like to know which option is best for me because I just bought a phone which I think is already rooted.
Please see the attached picture of my phone.
I just need advise so that I don't end up installing something in-compatible or something and end up bricking my phone.
Please advise or guide me in a right direction which steps or tutorial to follow to install jelly bean 4.1.1 on my i9100 ?

You're on siyah kernel. If you wish to keep your current kernel, you can install a cm10 rom released before 02 oct or JB ROM that hasn't used the latest mali drivers since siyah hasn't incorporated those yet.
The good news is you won't hard brick your phone..siyah is a safe kernel.
Look around the various ROM threads in the android development section, see if one catches your fancy and enquire if its compatible with siyah..since recommending ROMs goes against forum rules.
Also, most ROMs will include a kernel installation while installing them. Long story short, if you aren't insistent on keeping your current kernel you can flash pretty much any JB ROM built for the i9100. Be careful not to install any ROM for a different variant of the phone.
If you have any questions you can ask here or feel free to PM me.

Siyah isn't a ROM, its a kernel. What you've posted are both ROMs. The first will run on your current kernel, the second will install the CM kernel. So you can try either one of the two. Look through at least the last couple of pages and see what others think on both forums. That might give you a better idea if its right for you. Else you can always flash the other one.
Good luck!

So based on the step to go in to recovery mode:
"Reboot into CWM Recovery mode by pressing Vol Up + Home + Power button (Release only power button when you see Samsung logo)"
I am doing this but I only see samsung logo with i9100 and it goes away then comes back in 5 sec then goes and comes back again... tried several time but cannot go into recovery mode, why ?
Update: I have successfully installed the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 on i9100: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798266

[Q] Samsung YP-G1-CW8ARB Info/Help

Greeting's folks!
So you know what you are dealing with:
OS: Win 7 x64 or Win XP SP3
Device: Samsung YP-G1-CW8ARB ( US )
Firmware: 2.3.5
Kernal: 2.6.35.7-G1UEK18-CL562400
Build: GB-UEKI8
Experience : Flashed/Rooted Samsung SCH-R720 ( MetroPCS )
Background:
Using these forums I rooted/flashed a SCH-R720 that was given to me. so, with that under my belt I thought I'd pick up a YP-G1 and root/flash again, using these forums and well.... didn't turn out as well as the R720.
Bootloop from hell.
Tried all the method's listed here and no dice (Cept the one using Linux but not having it installed made it a tad hard ). But I still had the receipt so, brought it back and now have a new one in box.
Needed:
What I'm looking for is ( I know this is most likely outta order so bare with me )
1: as complete of a back up as one can get while UnRooted. files, partitions & such. with a way to restore said back up.
2: Root Kernel with CWM ( To replace the e3 recovery menu )
3: As complete of a back up I can get after all this is done ( want a before/after )
4: Any tips/tricks for this model.
5: Any info I may have missed.
Again... that list is likely out of order but I think you get the idea.
Step by step would be great!
Forum posts that I missed using search!

I was under the impression that the US variant only had the capacitive button and had no idea that both were available in the US.
Got that idea from your thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850 btw
But to answer the question: It has the capacitive button.
And nice to have one of the sites Recognized Contributor's lending a hand.
