Battery life - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how can i use my s2 i9100g for 2 full days without the need to charge it again?
what kernel, rom, apps do you recommend?
i'm new to this thing but already informed myself. i got the streetware kernel and the original 2.3.6 firmware. i capped the cpu to 300-600 mhz and its good like this but i need an app that autokills services that are hidden. like "Badge Provider" etc. or even better: install a kernel or rom that doesnt include all that ram-eating ****.

.
2 full days without charging
normal usage = no
light usage = no also
flight mode = yes
that is based on my experience.
now im using codeworkx ICS kernel. its quite good for me. quite heavy usage but it last for half day
I/O scheduler: noop
governor: hotplug
autokill services app might consume ur battery more because it have to run again and again.
to kill stock application, maybe u can refer to this
link: SGS2 Removable
credit to the owner (sorry i forgot where i get that from, but im sure its from XDA forum ) but that one is for GB, for ICS im not quite sure. maybe someone in this forum could help us :highfive:

i kinda messep up my s2 and get errors now and there. nothing critical though.
what rom and kernel would others recommend
i'd rather use gingerbread than ics if its better for the battery life. and one more question: can i use i9100 roms on i9100g ?

I9100 rom on i9100g : no
Cm9 is the Best rom i've used.
Better than stock one, for battery life as well as for stability

which rom for me

I have just rooted by galaxy s2 using cf root and odin 1.85.
my current firmware is XWKI4, reading through post particularly rooting methds (sroot and cf root), peopple are advised to download firmware which closes matches that of the stock rom, is this correct?
does it matter what kerner (or firmware) the custom rom comes with or does the curtom rom for me has to be xwkI4?
also, phones for my wife so list of most stable rom would be appricated.

No you are fine...You are rooted now so this is were the fun begins. Download a rom that you like and make sure you use recovery to flash it. Before you flash a rom make sure you make a backup of the current one you are on and make sure you back up your applications using Titanium backup. Then go ahead and flash a rom of your choice. Most roms always have a guide in the first page of their thread. Read it carefully and if you have to read it like ten times do so..That way you get a better understanding and at least you know what you are flashing.
Rom there are so many to choose from..Either Checkrom V4 that has a kitchen app or Foxhound. Also if you go in the Android development there are so many other roms there that you can flash...But like i said backup and do your reading first..Happy flashing
thanks for the quick response
I was thinking of trying checkrom or villianrom

Both roms are great. Try them both my friend you are not losing anything..That is the great thing about flashing roms..Try both for a few days and take it from there.
hello,
Well your phone is rooted now, so try what ever rom you like!
Look for the rom that's Best rated (4 or 5 stars).
If you want to stay on ginger, then what you mentioned are good amongst others.
If you like the iPhone look, then Try also the Miui ginger roms, DT Miui ginger is good).
Now if you like to go ICS then I recommandé you the Wanamlite (version 7.2 now), but put in mind that ICS is in 4.0.3 LP2 beta version, therfore still facing some problemes Yet. But it is worth to try.
One big advice though : in All cases, do your backup before, then wipe every thing from the reboot recovery CWM.
I hope this helps.
Best rom for you is the one you test yourself & decide works great for you. A Rom/kernel that works well for me might not work well for you (phone components slightly different, different phone setup, different usage).
Make sure you back up your EFS as well. Best way is with k-tool

pun the ignorance, what is EFS?
is there a thread where the rating of the rom is provided?

It's displayed alongside each thread/ROM in the Development forums. Not sure I'd set too great a store by those though. CheckROM is very reliable.
I wouldn't go anywhere near ICS for your wife - very high maintenance. (The ROM, that is, never met your wife...)

I have to agree with Gustopher here. Go for checkrom and then just install the ICS theme by Vertumus and your wife will a very happy lady.
ICS remix- resurrection, the best ics rom in the sgs2 at the moment baby

EFS is the folder that contains your IMEI code. If this gets corrupted its very hard to get back.

check what apps are running after reebot and check your battery if the contacs are fused together by mistake

Ask in the battery stats thread .
I would wipe the phone install stock rom do not add any apps .
Set-up turn off data sync etc ,
Fully charge battery wipe battery stats .
Let phone sleep for 12 hours or overnight and check battery usage .

First see partial wakelocks tab. You can post screen shoot here. First of all do next :
Download >>samsung ultimate kernel cleaning script 2.4<<
than download latest cf-root kenel form here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Place the files on your internal SD-CARD.
Restart to ClockWorkMod Recovery.
Install the kernel cleaning script.zip like any other package.
Install the Kernel of your choice.
Reboot the device.
Set BetterBatteryStats to "Kernel Wavelocks" with "Since Charged" and/or "Since Custom Ref." and see what it comes up with.
I did that. And then installed Redpill kernel. No changes. Same battery life.

[Q] matching rom and kernel - important or not?

Ok noob-ish question...
I have a Galaxy Tab S2 GT-I9100 running gingerbread 2.3.3 (VillainRom 1.4.0) and a non-stock kernel after deciding to be brave and update from 2.2 to 2.3. I've decided to use ICS in the form of the codename android version but, so far, I've not found a good recommendation for which kernel to run with it - I don't even know if it makes a lot of difference/is critical/or what as I'm still only learning about flashing roms, etc.. Matr1x kernel along with codename android seemed to be recommended but that was on a Samsung Note not a Galaxy S2 - does it matter?
NB. I have rooted this phone and installed CWM if that helps.
Can anyone advise me please (with links, if possible)
Thanks, Mark
Hey dude,
To make easy, my humble advice is to start with my new tweaked combo : Wanam + AbyssKernel 2.2.
Take a look :
I can easily last 1hour screen on time with 89- 88% left.
AbyssPlug gov + Noop
Extreme UC UV settings.
Bloatware freezed.

What do you think ? Pretty awesome isn't it ?
Best battery life with really nice performance.
Come on, you should try it..
My two cents.
Thanks for that but as there are so many roms available I really wanted to go with ICS and codename android, at least to start with! I'm not keen on making too many changes and experimenting as I'm only a beginner in this field and the last thing I want to do is make loads of changes and brick it by making a mistake. I certainly appreciate all the effort people like you make and it makes life much easier for the rest of us plebs!
Cheers
Do not mix and match kernels and/or ROM's from other devices. Look under the battery and make sure you have an international GT-I9100 and not a varient such as GT-I9100G.

Definitely the international version
Baseband version - I9100BVKH1
Kernal version - 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKH1-CL438706

The reason I mention the Matr1x kernel is that is was listed as a good combo in a page on "codename android on Galaxy S2" but it then went on about the galaxy nexus S. I didn't know whether they were different phones or the same phone with different names in different markets.
Anyhow I need to know if my existing kernel is good with ICS or if there is a better one to use on this phone.
Cheers all!

Battery Percentage jumps from 50% to 16%

Hi Guys,
I would like to ask for some advice regarding my GF's S2 Battery.. it seems that I'm in a dilemma which of two is at fault. Occasionally, whenever the battery hits 50% and I'm doing something CPU hungry apps like games or stuff.. it jumps from 50% to 16%.
I've already tried:
* Wiping battery stats in recovery (Using Philz)
* Flashing a new kernel
* Wiping Dalvik and Cache
* Fixing Permissions
and I still experience the ridiculous battery drain. Does anyone has an idea what could be the problem? Could it be the battery itself?
My GF's S2 is using Wanamlite 13.0 and Jeeboo kernel at the moment.
Any advice would be very much appreciated
Try a clean install of stock. Then try a new battery. If you've had the phone for a while (given the SGS2 was released over 18 mths ago), the battery could be on the way out. Even 12 mths of constant use/drain/recharge can finish a battery off depending on how often you repeat that cycle.

Flash to Wanam 12.8 or a version which is ICS.
Wanam 13 which based on LSJ is a leaked version that many users reporting problems with the battery performance.
After you try the ICS version of Wanam, you will see that battery performance is now stable.

The second one is funny.. It was `charging' while it wasnt on charge ! It tried to give me some volts back
I use last syiah kernel . I will update my signature when from pc
I tried all wipes .. I think it will be gone when i pass to jb . But that wont be before 4.2.2 maybe coz im really satisfied now (and jb isnt stable yet)

I used to have this behaviour before my USB port broke down completely.
Download android assistant, using this app it tells you which apps are using the most CPU, maybe she downloaded a game or something which uses alot of CPU.
Well to those who are interrested that was a battery problem.. I used a non genuine adaptator that damaged the battery progressively

Rage Kernel was originally developed by DuMOHsmol
greenAlgae recompiled it to run on FXP CM7.2.0
Here’s the original thread (KERNEL)(Mini/MiniPro/Active/LwW) Rage Kernel v2.7 / v2.8 / v2.9 for FXP CM7.2.0 ROM
Downloads are on post 8
greenAlgae's thread was closed on the 7th June 2012
I have sent a request to our Mod to close this thread. I have switched to cm9 and I don't think I can properly maintain this kernel and thread any longer

I made this thread because I use CM7 and would like to see if I can continue DuMOHsmol's &
greenAlgae's work to improve this kernel for myself ill post my progress here should anyone be interested
But as always use it at your own risk
I have used greenAlgae's 2.7 version for several months
It works well for me with the stable cm-7.2.0-mango.zip available on the cyanogenmod website
Iv been using the smothass governor and have noticed massive improvements to battery life with only the occasional “screen on lag”
CPU Governors explained by deedii
14: Smoothass:
The same as the Smartass “governor” But MUCH more aggressive & across the board this one has a better battery life that is about a third better than stock KERNEL
Click to collapse
Smoothass
A more aggressive version of Smartass that is very quick to ramp up and down, and keeps the idle/asleep maximum frequency even lower.
Pro: Theoretically better battery life than Smartass.
Con: Same as Smartass & Interactive (the CPU will slowly ramp down after it is no longer needed (compared to its ramping-up speed). Might also go too low when asleep (an issue with other governor when a Sleep profile is used in apps such as SetCPU), causing the device to malfunction. Most common example is the screen not powering on when the power button is pressed or the phone begins ringing. Might also effect apps running in the background while sleeping.)

The fist thing I wanted to change was the bootsplash
Following This Guide I was able to change it in less than 5 minuets. I used this wallpaper and some photoshop magic.
>
>
>
Image 1: original bootsplash
Image 2: Image I wanted to use
Image 3: Was very large file size, took forever to boot & looked a funny green/brown colour on the phone
image 4: This was the smallest I could get the png without it distorting to much. (I used a mixture of tools found Here) But it still took forever to boot
Then I read up on Run-length encoding
Realized what I was doing wrong and made this one.
It boots in a flash (looks better on the phone)
nice work mate!!
Thanks wasn't expecting anyone to be interested lol
Iv uploaded the boot image
Next id like to update CWM.... I found a file named recovery... but I cant see it being as simple as replacing that one file lol
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I'm interested to see where this goes, can you tell us the changes you did to the krenel so far except the boot image?
