[Q] JIG not starting download mode (normal boot instead) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i need to send in my phone for repairs because my battery gets drained like crazy and i tried everything to stop it. (dozen different roms/kernels completely "naked" without ANY apps and it still drains ~10% an hour).
so anyway, my JIG worked fine all the time (got me into download mode every time), but since i need to reset the binary counter i flashed the XWKG1 firmware and the old bootloader through odin and everything works fine, except my JIG does not bring me into download mode anymore. when i plug it in, the phone just boots normally. i can get into download mode with 3 button method but it just shows me that the counter is still on 1.
any suggestions?
searching for this matter is kinda hard, because "jig not working" brings up all kinds of threads about the jig not resetting due to newer bootloader, and "jig not starting download mode" doesnt bring the desired results either.
so any help would be much appreciated.

strange!!!
Home made jig or purchased one? Sometime any short circuite on the jig resisters???
if available try with another jig...
you can flash again old bootloader and try.

purchased one. i already opened it up to check for short circuit, and the color coding of the resistor is correct aswell (301k)...

If the jig is working properly then you should get to dl mode with old bootloader. You can get info regarding how to install it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and here http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/12/23/...oader-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-to-enable-usb-jig/

thats exactly what i'm saying. i have the right firmware, and the right bootloader flashed, but when i plug in my JIG the phone boots normally. i can get into download mode with volume down+home+power but that way i cant reset my binary counter.

Logic says buy a new USB jig as the cost is so small .

debugging will not make any difference...
even if you keep posting, you dont get any suggestions other than below :
1) try your jig on any other phone
2) try with new jig
3) try flashing old bootloader again
Everythig fail, flash ICS and use Triangle Away app.

Yeah I guess. Bootloader is not the problem, as it worked before. Plus, according to other threads, ICS bootloader works with jig, but it only force-boots to download, not flashing Odin counter. As stated, that doesn't even work.

[Q] Yellow Triangle

Is there a possible way to remove the yellow triangle on boot and still keep the "recovery mode" (the one with the backup and restore options) from CWM and not the recovery mode from the original stock ?
Yes there is:

just buy a usb download jig off ebay...it resets the triangle, costs ya 4bucks or whatever and if your phone ever gets soft bricked or something you can use it to access download mode

Yep that's the one. It's basically a resistor that triggers download mode when it's inserted. Always decent to have I think.

Go to Intratech's thread
Download an old bootloader
Flash it
Reset the counter
@liorlevy:
Shut your phone completely down
Insert the Jig
Wait, till you are in download mode and it tells you that the history was cleared
Remove the Jig and reboot
If it does not work, you have a new bootloader too. In that case, do what I told zipolly to do and then repeat the procedure.

[Q] Might have hard bricked my phone

So I was trying to root new Galaxy s2.. long story short, I think I hard bricked it.
The device won't power up; or at least the screen won't show anything.
I can't get to Download Mode.
Is there anyway I can save my new 400 dollar investment?
How are you trying to get into download mode ? Hold the volume down, home button and the power button at the same time. When you get the Samsung screen, release the power button but keep holding the volume down/home buttons until you get into download mode.
If you really can't get into download mode your options are:-
1) Get a jig. This would be your last chance to get into download mode before sending it off for repair.
2) Find someone near you who does JTAG repairs. This option will be cheaper than paying for Samsung to repair your phone.
3) Return the phone to Samsung. As you've tried to root the phone, there's a fair chance you'll end up paying for said repair as this voids your warranty. On the other hand you might be one of those people who get lucky and Samsung fixes your phone under warranty regardless. A roll of the dice essentially.
Edit - Remove your battery & leave it out for a minute or so before trying to get into download mode.
Or failing options 1 & 2 already suggested then perhaps option 2a..
Apply a current to the sim connectors under the battery and make sure it never evers boots again, Samsung won't know what's happened to it and will repair/replace FOC.
(I find an old laptop PSU minus connector plug usually applies enough current for this)
Hehehehe ;-) Damn that brought back memories Uridium. I used to do that with Sega Mega Drive cartridges. However, I'm not sure we should be suggesting same on here. Not exactly ethical and bordering on fraud tbh

Looking at JIGS on Ebay, I'll probably get one from there.
So how would I use that?
Plug it in to get to Download Mode then take it out and plug in USB connection to my PC?
I'm still unaware of which correct firmware to put it, so this is so scary :[

Haha I will try the JIG method first.
But thanks for the devious idea ;]
Yep. Look for "Samsung Galaxy S2 download mode jig" or something like that on eBay. Shouldn't be more than a few bucks. When you get it, make sure the phone is off, plug the jig in the usb port & if you're lucky the phone will boot into download mode. Yeah, once you're in download mode, remove the jig, plug a USB cable in/connect to your PC then flash your firmware of choice via Odin.
We can worry about which firmware to flash once you're able to get it to boot with a jig tho. Post back here when you get it & then we can work out which firmware to go with.

Thanks for your help! The JIG should arrive by Friday. Till then.. back to my iPhone 3G, yuck.
Hey I have an idea, why don't you tell us how you think you bricked your phone.
Because, for example, if you've flashed a bad Kernel then your phone may seem bricked (it has all the characteristics) but can be recovered by someone who knows what to do. Likewise, if you were flashing something with Odin and you had a sudden spasm attack and pulled the USB out, you've bricked your phone. Tell us what you did and we can give a proper reply.
EDIT: If the phone is only soft bricked and you can get into DL mode with a JIG, you go can it without one.

Well, first I was using odin to root it by changing the kernel. But I think I was using the wrong version and then I got "firmware is wrong. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again."
Then I tried to put back 2.3.4 and that's where I think went wrong. I unplugged the phone because it was just stuck with Odin on for over 10 minutes.
Then now I can't even turn it on.

If Odin hadn't finished its business and you unplugged your phone then yea, you've probably bricked it. Cases like these is why I never use Odin, its beta software which even the developers don't fully understand how it works. Even if through no fault of your own, Odin can fail, and that leaves you pretty well ****ed. Try the JIG, you may have unplugged it when it wasn't flashing something important, but yea, I'd start making up a really good excuse to get a new phone.

Well it might be possible to Unbrick your phone without Jig, but solution has not worked for 100% user, though it has worked for me(I'm not sure it was hard brick). So here are the steps:
1- Start Odin
2- Attach the USB cable to the PC (DO NOT ATTACH IT TO THE PHONE)
3- Press and hold "Volume up" and "home" buttons
4- Attach the USB cable to the phone while holding both buttons
5- The phone will enter in download mode
Just flash the stock kernel after that.
And don't forget to THANK me if it works

[Q] USB Jig not working on I9100

I've a I9100 and for certain hardware issue (Audio problem) I want to send it to the Service Center.
I tried different custom ROMs before coming back to 2.3.3 KE8 through ODIN as I realized the hardware issue was not gonna fix without sending it for repair or replacement.
Now, I bought USB Jig from Ebay and followed the instructions in the USB Jig FAQ thread but after switching the phone off and inserting the USB Jig it is not booting into the Download Mode ? Is the USB Jig not working ?
Or do I need to flash an old bootloader to get this working , if yes a link please ?
Yes most probably thats a bootloader issue...get an old bootloader from the Original Dev Subsection.
Mine for some reason doesn't automatically boot when the jig is inserted but it does do it's job when I just use the power button to switch on.
Then it boots into download mode and resets triangle and flash counter.
Don't know why. I bought it for my sgs1 so maybe thats something.
Anyway try doing it that way and see how you go.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I flashed the old bootloader posted in the intratech's thread here Still its not booting up.
And also, I tried inserting the Jig and then powering on manually that didn't work as well.
What now ?
Some peoples have posted on other forums about the USB jig doesn't work automatically when inserted (although it should...) Try inserting the jig, and powering your phone on. It should reset the flash counter, if you are trying to get rid of the triangle for "warranty" purposes
Are you close to any of these people?

Try cleaning the usb port with a spray duster or tooth brush and try jig again.. Also you may be unlucky with a DOA Jig...
Hey I just couldn't get the USB Jig working so I had no other option but to try the riskier method.
So, I updated to ICS (Resurrection Remix 9.3) and used TriangleAway and it worked. Then I flashed the Stock Rom by using Mobile Odin.

Seems like a dud jig to me. Mine automatically boots into download mode, regardless of bootloader.

You might get lucky
I had a similar problem i atempted my first rom install ever when we had a powercut my phone gave me connect to kies message i had no cwm no bootloader however i still sent my phone away as they had agreed to fix for me in the first place thankfully even though they never fixed the physical damage caused by their packaging skills and a combo of royal mails handling it they were good enough to fix my software problem without charge to myself. I think because they couldnt access the flash counter they were forced to put new firmware on either way big thanks to them i finally got ics on my phone.
They have however since had my phone back and fixed all above physical probs again cheers to them they were either sympathetic with rom or just did it anyway.
Just thought id pop my experience with you

I9100G can't charge, and cannot get into download mode via jig, but CAN get to download mode via 3 button combo?
Sounds like the USB port is broken.
Since it's the I9100G, as you have discovered, there is no reliable ICS released for the I9100G yet, so you cannot use Triangle Away. And without a working USB port, the jig will not work.
However, you can replace that part for a relatively small cost from what I understand.

Look, I can't possibly be sure, because you have the phone in front of you. I can't see it, so I don't know what exactly is broken. But the symptom you describe sounds like the usb post is broken. Others have ordered the usb port part and replaced it themselves for about $13 USD.
But if you are this unsure, I'm guessing you are probably either not willing or not capable (not trying to insult, just stating facts) of doing this on your own.
If that's the case, I think you don't have any other choice other than to just send it to Samsung. But there is no other way for you to reset the counter... So warranty will probably be denied.

[Solved]Help Required!! Suspecting Brick :(

Hello,
I am new to the S2 forum. I have purchased the phone on Dec 04. It came with firmware version 4.0.4.
The PDA was I9100XWLPW and CSC was I9100ODDLPC.
After a week, I flashed the leaked JB firmware XXLSJ and used PhilZ cwm6 kernel to obtain root.
I was not having any problems until today.
I was using the phone normally, it had about 60% battery. Suddenly it was not waking up ( The phone was not used for about 15min ). I tried removing the battery, all button combinations but was not booting normally or into recovery. I could get into the download mode by plugging the phone to the PC. Odin failed to flash the official FW and the JB leak. I followed the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458 and found out it was a corrupted NAND r/w function.
I tried doing all the steps given in the thread. Now my phone does'nt go into the download mode and does'nt show charging when plugged to a power source.
Can I recover my phone?
Please someone help me or guide me to a previous post that solves this problem!!
Edit: Samsung service has replaced the mother board!!
Doing the pit partition has resulted in my phone getting bricked!!
So people new to the forum, never do it
Hi,
You said you couldn't access download mode, but can you access CWM recovery?
If you can then, you should wipe data/factory set, wipe cache and wipe Dalvik-cahe. after that you should re-flash your ROM.
If that doesn't work, maybe you should restore your CWM/Nandroid backup of your ROM before you flashed the JB leak XXLSJ, which in this case seems to be Stock ROM. (providing that you have backed it up in the first place)

HI,
today I wake up with the same problem.(Bug from the junary 1st???). I'm on Leak 4.1.2 too
Mi Galaxy sII don't charge the batery (loop from charge batery symbol) All the combination button don't wake up the phone.
The only thing seem working is the download mode. Don't try to connect to ODIN for the moment.
Any idea?

We already have plenty of topics about this why do you feel the need to create another? Your symptoms are no different to others and the answers are no different.
If you cant access download or recovery and cant power on then try a USB jig. If that doesnt work then you will need to take/send it for repair which will either be JTAG or complete mobo replacement.
Just because you create your own topic it doesnt mean answer is going to be any different.

If you can access download mode, use it. Try re-flashing your kernel.

Thanks for your reply. I will be taking the phone to Samsung Service tomorrow.

3 100k resistors + 1k resistor in series connected between 4 and 5 pins of a male usb end when plugged will get you into download mode in case of soft bricks .

In some of the posts, I've read that a JIG may not work on ICS based roms!!
Is this true?? Should I try a JIG first before I take the phone to Samsung Service??
I was on XXLSJ before the phone went dead!!

I had the same problem.. I could get into the download mode by:
1. Phone completely OFF state
2. Connect the USB cable to the phone and PC ( The battery charging indication has to come, atleast once )
3. Fire up ODIN
4. Get the phone into download mode ( Vol-down+home+Power ) while the phone is connected
5. The phone is now recognized by ODIN.
I could flash a kernel (tried siyah and Philz) but the phone was not booting.
While trying to flash Stock and XXLSJ, ODIN was getting failed at factoryfs.fs
After a few trys, the phone just went dead!!
Hope you can flash a firmware successfully :good:

You are misinterpreting what you read. What you're referring to is resetting the binary counter, and no it doesn't work on ICS bootloader however it still works for putting device into download mode (unless its bricked).

"Soft-brick" has absolutely no meaning, Your device is either "bricked" or it isnt. Its a made up term by n00bs when they cant get system to boot normally. Your devcie is only bricked when it wont power on or go into useable recovery+download modes. If you can simply use a jig or go directly into flashing a rom then your device is not bricked.
The "bricked" term is used far too loosely nowadays.

Your phone died? you kiding ?
I'm using the leak version of Sammobile since 3 weeks... Why do you think the phone make a bad reaction now? why now?
Ok, you try to flash OFW and don't result. and then you flash again the XXLSJ ? and the phone colaspe?
What kind of roms do i flash? OFM or CFW ? ICS or JB ?
Well if a can connect with ODIN of course
A quick question!!
Is it possible that the phone can be revived (put into download mode) using a JIG if it is not starting at all for any key combinations and it is not showing charging animation when plugged into a computer or a power source??

Yes its possible which is the reason we already mentioned to try it
It all depends on the actual base issue though as to whether it will work. Its worth a try either way though, They only cost £1-2 or you can make them yourself if you have the spare parts. (Don't ask how, Use search).
I have tried the JIG, but no luck!!
I have given the phone to Samsung Service.
Hope they fix it!!
Will they use JTAG or it has to be done somewhere else in case Samsung people refuse to do it??
They wouldn't refuse just act dumb tell something like you were updating firmware via kies and all of a sudden power went down and device bribed
