Does the Galaxy S III camera have the exact same image sensor as the S II?
I read about software improvements with the camera but nothing about the sensor itself.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA

It's a different sensor. This is galaxy s II forum though ;-)
Tapatalked.

SGS3 uses the S5C73M3 sensor, SGS2 uses S5K3H2YX sensor. Apparently the SGS2 sensor is the same as the one used in the HTC One X so I wonder if some of the features like zero shutter lag and image taking while videoing can be brought to the SGS2 via software

Cool thanks. Happy to know it has a better newer sensor.

Its not the same both the hox and s3 use back illuminated sensors now that are better for image grain or noise performance. I'd imaging an image with the same detail and resolution as the gs2 but sharper with less grain or noise.

mmm.. your fake .. please read - http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/file/media/S5K3H2-0.pdf

Interestingly esensor has ability to record at 60 FPS, but in SGS II it is limited. :S

If you want a better camera , I am sorry to say you will need to buy a stand-alone.
what dont you like about it? I think its pretty damn good.
Are you using a custom ROM? I know some of them mess with the camera in a bad way.
Coming from an iPhone 4 (which I loved taking pictures with) the GS2 is so much better. Especially when using an alternative camera app such as Camera Zoom FX.
Hell, the images look on par with pics taken with my fiancees 4s. The dof and fov loom better on the 4s. But, the gs2 has better color accuracy and sharpness. The flash is also much better.

It isn't better? So what's wrong with it? I agree that the camera app for the captivate was great.
But to complain about the one in this phone is like complaining about the 2012 Bentley, in that it's like the 2011's.

Just because it's similar doesn't mean it needs to be replaced. I think it is a great app, better than the captivate's.

Yeah, this happens to me as well. I rarely change the settings, but it is kind of annoying.
i like the camera on this phone, nice colors and clarity.
Well the main difference between a 5 MP camera on the Captivate and the 8 MP on this phone is the size of the picture, nothing more. And yeah, the Captivate had an epic camera already, and at such high numbers, I guess the jump isn't that high...

The Captivate did have an excellent camera, however taking presentable quality indoor shots under
normal lighting conditions day or night was a impossibility due to the Captivate's lack of flash.
(not to mention that outdoor dawn or night shots of people were impossible without flash)
I have to agree that i'm disappointed in the camera. A few things i notice:
- the captivate seems to handle incandescent and "soft white" CFLs a lot better.
- while it's nice having a flash.. it's just too bright. wish there was a way to dim in in software
- when i make EV adjustments: there seems to be almost no noticeable difference between 0 and +2. -2 how ever is a fairly drastic change (as it should be).
- when set to spot meter on the captivate, i could aim at the darker parts of a subject to get the image brighter.
- the front camera seems to deal with warm lights better than the main.
So far, i suspect that there might be a max shutter speed somewhere and that's why doing +EV doesn't work in low light.
When i have time, i will try various test shots.
One test i should also try is to use the digital zoom, so the flash is farther away from the subject.
Another thing i notice is i feel the screen is overly saturated and dark compared to the captivate when both are set to auto.
the only thing I agree with is that the LED flash is very bright at times. Otherwise, the camera is top notch. If you need a better camera, get a standalone.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus vs XPS?

Hello everyone and sorry if this post is kinda obsolete, and I know that I'm in XPS forum so I'm expecting a biased answer.
How do you think the XPD holds up against the GN? I'm mostly disappointed about its camera, I love the screen despite its banding and image retention issues, and I've come from the Galaxy S line (S, S II and now Nexus). I think the nexus is a bit too big for me, but I was hoping someone brought a light on this matter.
Thanks everyone.

I have exactly the same phone history s sII nexus and now I have the XPS, I can only say, this phone is fantastic! It feels much better, it´s very fluent and uix is much better than touchwiz, I prefere it over the vanilla rom of the nexus! Which in my opinion is verrrry boring!

346ppi for the Xperia S?? It's 342ppi, but let's not split hairs...342ppi or 346ppi is still pretty impressive either way.
Yeah I've heard the screen is great, really crisp and it pars with AMOLED screens. I'm still waiting for it to launch in Portugal, as they said it would be on the 6th...Well we're on the 9th and nothing yet.
The Galaxy Nexus uses the PenTile layout, which uses less subpixels to build up pixels, so the effective resolution isn't really a true 720p. The Xperia S on the other hand is true RGB, and a lot better.
I have both. Screen on gnexus its bright and vivid but colors are fake. Xperia s colors are a lot more close to the real thing. Its just beautiful. Camera its a HUGE plus for me on a phone. And xperia s way way better camera than nexus. What else. I'm running BAMF rom on the nexus. Runs amazing.

I don't believe that actually works. Try using a small torch on the light sensor and screen will change brightness. Hold light close to sensor for a few seconds and watch screen slowly brighten.

that should be easy...
firstly u need a PROPERLY rooted device (superuser and busybox installed)
then
find the automatic light sensor (als) sysfs:
Code:
find /sys/ | grep als
on ARC the als sysfs is here:
Code:
/sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/
to disable it (on ARC) just execute:
Code:
echo '0' > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable

The resolution is so high that you can't tell that the SAMOLEDHD screen is using a Pentile Layout, only with text and if you look very close.
With the galaxy nexus blacks were more black, there is no big difference in sharpness. When I play images on my Xperia S I sometimes wonder if it used anti-aliasing, because round thing (like the stock background) don't look very sharp, they looked much sharper on the samoledhd screen.
I think the bravia-engine, makes the colours look the as on an amoled display.
Sometimes greens are a bit oversaturated.
The one thing I really hated on amoled screens is that when you change screens, for instance go from the keyboard to a grey screen, you could still see the keyboard printed in the grey.
The only thing that I hate on this screen is that so have dead subpixels, I changed the phone today this one just has one big one and one small one which got away with a dead-pixel-fixer. Monday I will go to the shop to get a third one.

hacking the Camera.apk

for those of you who are unaware, Samsung likes to put parental controls on their Camera. youll have limits on when youre allowed to open the camera, such as below 15% battery, during music, while youre in a call (where its bluetooth or not), and during media scanning. on top of these limitations, youll also be faced with a mandatory shutter and focus sound, whether your sound is muted or not.
on all of the previous Galaxy phones, weve been luckily enough to have developers mod the camera.apk to fix these broken implementations. Fr4gg0r on the Galaxy S, and pulser_g2 on the Galaxy S II. who will be the one to mod the Galaxy S III Camera.apk?
anyone up for the challenge?
edit:
ive updated the Camera.apk attached to an odexed version
Can you post the camera.apk here, so that we can try?
I have my SGS3 on preorder here in the Netherlands, so I have 3 weeks to go...

If support for the reported 120fps the hardware supports could be implemented, that would be legendary. I don't care what resolution it drops to really, but for me it would be extremely useful.
120fps, youd probably need a custom camera app for that, not a modded one
i know Fast Camera in the market can do some impressive stuff, even on SGS2

Just turn on vibrate or mute from the pulldown bar and you'll have no shutter sound.
I find it almost concerning that the pics form my S3 are only 1.5mb filesize, my S2 they were twice that and with hte old GB modded camera apk they were nearer 6mb
the pics like great but i cant help feeling that I am not geting as much detail as is capable?
Lot of good replies.. id like to See a 60fps at 720p which should be possible since the iphone 4s has it and we have the same sensor

Even when I was on Gingerbread, I never used the camera. It is inadequate and insufficient to get what I want out of a photograph. There is no "real" zoom on the lens and the megapixel count on the device is never going to produce any pictures of print quality.
Thus, for my photography needs, I go to a Nikon D7000 DSLR. In contrast, however, my wife uses Canon's Powershot Series camera, which is a very powerful, much cheaper alternative to a DSLR.

I love the camera on my player but I'm willing to not use it for the small time being because CM10 is coming out with a 3.xx kernel so the Camera will be working in no time.
I'm a bit reluctant to update to one of the ICS roms because I use the camera so often. Sure, it doesn't compare to a dedicated device but it's more than adequate image quality for sharing and/or even printing if you play around enough with the settings. Night shots are obviously pretty bad but can't say I expected much more from a tablet's camera.

Galaxy S4 camera worse than S3

I've upgraded from a personal Galaxy S3 to a Galaxy S4 provided by my employer. I've been taking a few photos with it and I've noticed that photos taken with the S4 are coming out blurrier more often than photos from the S3. I've removed the protective film from the camera lens, and I'm holding in the button while taking the photo until it focuses. The photos still come out blurry too often. I'm using the stock camera with default settings on both.
Any ideas?

I have heard the S4 has a piece of plastic film/screen protector over the camera that can be a bit tricky to remove. Maybe that is causing reduced photo quality.
