[Q] Anyone Know How To Avoid The New Activation Fee? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I read a rumor that the $36 activation fee can be waved if you provide Sprint with your AAA card. Anyone done this?
does anyone know of any other way to avoid this "tax"?
I just pre-ordered the EVO LTE and will supposedly be charged the fee upon activation. Do I need to go into a Sprint store and show them my AAA card? Can I do this over the phone? Does it even work?
Thanks.

Idk about AAA. But I am going to try to get the fee waived upon activation by saying I stuck with my sprint order even though I could have got it cheaper through wirefly.
We will see.

I was told my fee is waived due to the plan I'm on.
I'm on sero Premium 450/min w/unlimted data & txt

I ordered a different phone for my daughter earlier this week. I just asked the representative to waive the activation fee and she did. I'll verify this when my next statement comes in.

That would be nice. Let us know if you have success with that route.
Is there a way to cancel the pre-order with Sprint? Or am I SOL on the Wirefly and BB deals?

Did you have to convince them?
I'm going to be upgrading to the same plan but was out of luck when trying to get the fee waived. Even mentioned how SERO members are forced to upgrade through sprint when wirefly and Best Buy are offering much better promotions on the same product..
Maybe another representative will yield better results.

I'll have to try this when my phone comes in and I activate it.
Thanks

Just and FYI since I said I would report back. I called Sprint and I asked about my activation fee and he initially said that I would have to pay it. I explained that I ordered through sprint even though I could have gotten the phone much cheaper through a 3rd party and I would appreciate it if they would wave the fee to help offset the cost difference. He put me on hold for 1 minute came back and said the activation fee has been waved.
Maybe this route can help some who ordered through Sprint.

To clarify about the AAA activation fee waiving:
You MUST have the AAA discount as your account's discount in order to use this. In other words, if you have an employer discount you use to get 15% off your bill every month, then THAT discount plan must include the fee waiver to get the waiver. You couldn't just flash your AAA card and get it.
So, if you have the AAA as your discount, you will receive 10% monthly off your bill, and waived activation fees. But you cannot mix and match, sadly. I talked to Sprint about this yesterday. Kind of disappointed... I don't want to pay $36 for no reason.

Guess I need to try this route as well. Knowing my luck, I'll get a 'no' person.

It wont hurt to ask when you call to activate it. The worst that could happen is they tell you no and charge you. The best is they wave the fee. I went with 119.00 on wirefly so I can't use the " went with Sprint" argument. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

oh well
we shall see if my txt chat skills are up to this challenge once this "ESN storage fee" hits my bill.
If I lose I may ask them to explain how activating my phone costs them money, seems like they ESN goes into the system then blam that is all, once the ESN is in the system I can deactvate and active a month later without a fee, just curious if they have a legitimate reason for the fee,

If you get a "no" person just hang up and call back. Someone will do it for sure. I got it on first try so you will get it.

Would this work?
What if a person with a sero plan (gets free activation) activates your phone on their line, then takes it off.
Now that you're phone's ESN is in their system, you'd be able to switch back to your own phone at no charge (avoiding the activation fee)

You could also call top tier CS. I called the regular CS line earlier today and was denied even after telling them I would just cancel and go to Best Buy he brought a manager on the manager said "we can't waive it so I suggest purchasing it at Best Buy"(Wow really). Called Top Tier CS and with no hassle the lady said she will waive the activation fee and follow up next week to make sure it wasn't added and if I have issues to call back and reference call today.
The number is: 1-866-727-0665
Just ask for account services once they answer

Thanks for the posting. I too called customer service and got the nope-nope-nope line. I don't understand how Amazon can get the activation waived, yet the person at Sprint today told me it is impossible. Every upgrade requries the $36 fee. I got a tough cookie on my first try.
I never have good luck. Should have waited for Amazon to list the phone. What happened to the days where everybody had the same price on launch day (maybe a $10 difference).

Amazon looks like the same link to "free activation" as Wirefly and others...it appears to only be good on NEW LINE activations. Anybody confirm this is not the case? That would certainly be another argument to make with S after I get the phone. I have BofA corp rate....and I have usually gotten the activation removed (5 lines...over 15 years with Sprint)....but not on the Evo3D's. Grr.

To answer your question the AAA membership will NOT waive upgrade fees, but It will waive the Activation fees. Meaning, if you are signing up with Sprint AAA will waive the fee but if you are a current Sprint customer, upgrading to a new device, unfortunately it will not waive the fee. That said, the AAA discount must be active on the account prior to you coming into the store for an upgrade or AT the time of purchase when signing up with Sprint. It will also save you 10% a month and like someone else has previously stated, you cannot mix discount so if you already have a discount the AAA will not apply.
For some slightly better news, if you go with the Credit Union membership discount, that WILL waive ALL fees, activation AND upgrade fees. It will also save you 10% a month. You just need to be a part of ANY credit union, BECU, Alaksa ect...

You are correct. If you are upgrading an existing line on Amazon you will still be charged the $36.00.
I know this because I called Sprint today. Tried to get them to waive activation fee, they would not again, but I was able to get them to cancel my preorder. So I ordered from Amazon instead (always been a fan w/ no hassle). Still saving $64.00 ($50 on phone & $16 on tax).

Activation fee

Anyone know if this will be wavied. I talked to my local shack (love saying that) and they said it is $35 and comes down from sprint so they can't waive it. I know wirefly will only charge 19. So its 20 more plus tax and twice the activation fee I'm beginning to regret that shack preorder
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
Sprint charges the activation/upgrade fee, not radioshack. It should just be billed to your account. For upgrades, I think it's $18 and new activations are $35.
I know if you are a AAA member at the Sprint store they'll wave the activation fees.
i get a corporate discount so you think i can get it waived at the shack
I just called because my 125 port in credit never got confirmed... And they also waived the activation fee for me
New customer two lines both ported in from tmobile
sent from anything but an iPhone
im a new sprint customer coming from att, and went into sprint store and they waved the fee
I have just told them I don't want to pay an activation fee. Am re-upping that enough of an activation. So they always waive it.

Yeah, it all depend on who you talk to at Sprint. I tried *2 and a chat to get the fee's removed since my corporate discount is supposed to have free activations, and all I got was "it's a valid fee". I called the number listed in the thread here with people getting their upgrades reset, and the lady did it with no problems for both of my lines.
How much is activation anyways? Can we do it at best buy or does it have to be done over the phone?
its is done at the store they wont let you leave with out activating and it is 18

Idea to get the $37 activation charge waived..

I'm sure many of you, like myself, are sick of paying the $37 activation phone every time you upgrade your phone.
Well I just had an idea, to maybe, perhaps, get the fee waived.
What if we just go to Sprint/Bestbuy, use the upgrade to buy the phone.. and then tell them NOT to activate it?
THEN.. once you're home, call Spring from your device and say "hey, I just bought a new phone that I'd like to use on my account please" (like how you would do with a phone bought from Craigslist.)
Since they don't charge you anything for swapping phones, maybe they won't charge you here either?
What do you guys think?

Impossible. No such thing as a $37 activation fee.
Impossible. If you buy at BestBuy they have to activate it for you.

would that work though? Because your account may have been flagged once the phone is shipped/picked up that there is an upgrade pending. When you call in to sprint for 'swapping' they might see that its a new model and charge regardless.
Your plan might work though. That's what I was planning to do just pick it up from BB and call when I'm home. I didnt know you have to activate it there.

I'm 100% certain you don't have to activate in the store because last time I used 2 upgrades to get the Evo 3D and the Galaxy SII (Epic Touch or whatever), and I never got the Galaxy activated. I just sold it on Craigslist immediately.
Unless of course.. they changed it in the last half a year or so.

Best Buy won't sell you a $550 phone for $200 just because they are so nice. They get commissions from Sprint that cover the difference and few bucks for the store. In order to get commissions, they need to extend contract and activate the phone with their dealer code. So, activating the equipment is a requirement. If someone lets you walk away without activating a phone, they just made $400 mistake.
I think I may be able to clear this up. Anytime you upgrade with Sprint at a third party retailer (Radio Shack, Best Buy, Sprint Indirect Retailer, etc) they will use a system called SNAP.
In SNAP, when an upgrade is processed a $36 upgrade fee is automatically triggered on the account, or at time of purchase if it is ordered. This cannot be waived manually by any rep. The system just forces it. Whether the phone is activated or not, your still going to get charged the fee.
For example, if you ever order a device from a Sprint Indirect dealer and have the phone shipped to your house and never activate, you will still get that upgrade fee. Even if you were to throw that phone in the river as soon as UPS hands it over to you and never active it, ever.
So: the actual activation of the device does not warrant the upgrade fee, the fact of you using your upgrade and resigning the 2 year agreement does. Thats why it is officially called an "upgrade" fee. An activation fee is when you initially sign up with Sprint.
Hope that helps.
I called Sprint retention department recently before I preordered from Amazon and asked them specifically about the activation fee and she was willing to waive it for me. What she did tell me though was they could not pre-emptively waive it. It needs to go through and to charged to my account first, then I can call in again and have them take it off.

Hate to break it to you, but this will NOT work. The reason you can swap other phones w/o charge is that they have been active on atleast one other account prior to yours. I can tell you this from exp I fought them on 3 fees for a week due to this. The phone had been on a friends account prior. now if you were to buy it from CL or Ebay, after it has been active on another acct first then you would not be charged.

this is spot on and worded perfectly. Also, Bestbuy now uses BEAST only for processing new activations and upgrades instead of SNAP (i believe to track margin) but still has access to SNAP for other changes.

You want to avoid the activation fee here is how. Buy the phone at full price, or ebay price from a reseller. Once you get the phone go on your Sprint account and do the online activation.
If you want that $199 price you are going to pay the activation fee, it'll get charged to your bill.
Open a credit union account, credit union discount waives activation fee.

I called and asked them to waive it due to the delay in shipping, and they did
I called in account services as recommended else where in this thread.
What they offered me was a credit equal to the base rate - my employee discount if I extended the contract for another year. This extension is for the contract only and does not affect my equipment upgrade dates. Once I do upgrade the equipment, the date then gets pushed back another year from the time of activation (so the usual 24 months after activation). I only have one line with them with a MRC of $69.99+10 (no discount on the $10 though). I still have ~6 months on my current contract too.
I decided to go ahead with the offer since they're still the cheapest around here, and hopefully once lte roll out is completed, data will improve too. This credit cancels out the activation fee and a little more.
ymmv, but at this point I think they'll be making concessions to most customers, even those who in the past may not have qualified.

That was my plan after I got my phone. Ask for a refund due to the hassle. Shouldn't be too difficult to get someone to credit it.
i dont pay activation fees. its part of my corp. discount w/ accenture.
it doesnt matter where i buy the phone. i got an evo3d via amazon 1 cent sale and a second one at radio shack for 49.99. they didnt even attempt to add it to my bill. the guy at radio shack mentioned it, but when i got the bill, there was no fee.
some others offer this too. aaa for example.

This is a good idea but if you have worked for Sprint you know that just placing the phone on the account will generate that $36. It's just labeled an activation fee. It literally takes nothing to activate a phone. Just a simple "hey let me use your connection" from your phone to the Sprint Network and then Sprint replies with a "well let me make sure your on an account via your dec number" then boom! the phone is connected.
that though sadly is not what generates the fee its the simple act of placing the phone on an account. Seriously go buy a phone via upgrade then dont activate it till after you recieve your bill. you will still see that fee on there even though your phone is still in the box. (not that anyone will do this) haha
Whenever you purchase a new phone that has never been activated before, you ALWAYS pay a one time activation fee. After that you can swap it from phone number to number and you will no pay it again. Is a one time thing.(I called Sprint twice and both reps said the same thing)
I just got my fee waived via a "promotional" discount the CS rep said they had. Not sure if that's true. I also used some info found in Ramit Sethi's scripts. Worth a call or two to get it waived.
I ordered my phone online, activated it online, and was still hit with the activation fee. Their bullsh!t excuse when I emailed them wad that they have to do such things to keep the subsidized prices on the phones low... to which I replied that I paid full MSRP and if I had bought it second hand, there'd be no activation fee. I concluded saying that I may never buy a phone through Sprint again. It has been escalated and I've been playing phone tag with someone higher up. I'll post back with how it turns out.

Get the $30 upgrade fee refunded

I just saw the $30 upgrade fee on my bill for upgrading to the Inc4G. Since it's a BS charge, I figured I'd try to get it credited back. I upgraded at Best Buy, so I told the VZ rep that BB never mentioned an upgrade fee and that they just charged me for the phone. VZ said it didn't matter, and while BB should have told me, it's not a BB charge, so no matter how I upgraded, I would've been charged the $30 fee anyway.
I told the VZ rep that that was not acceptable. When I asked what the upgrade fee was for, as in "where does that $30 go? What do I get for that $30?", he couldn't give me an answer. "It's just a new policy", he said. So I asked, "So it sounds like I'm paying $30 for the privilege to remain a VZ customer, is that right?" Again, I got the "policy" line. He insisted that he could not refund the fee. So I asked him what he could do... he put me on hold for about 2 minutes and said that he could credit me 1 month of my unlimited data, which equals the $30 of the upgrade fee. So he did.
Success.
tldr:
Don't let VZ get away with that BS upgrade fee. Complain and get something credited. It's a garbage fee.
Nicely done sir!

I "exchanged" a Nexus for the Inc4, within the 14 day window, and they charged me an upgrade fee as well (I couldn't really understand their logic the way they explained it). They said there was no way that they couldn't charge it -- the system wouldn't let them take it off. I *****ed to the manager at the store (threatened to take the Nexus back...after they did all the paperwork... )and he credited me the $30 as well. I think you just have to be persistent, and not loose your temper. Good job! Let's all get some recovery!
yay!! you gotta use unlimited data more than $30 worth!!!! :good:
But for me, I don't know if I wanna argue them and get the unlimited data because I already have one.. :/ I wish they could just refund!

you're lucky you didn't get hit with the $35 restocking fee.
I had to pay the $30 upgrade fee AND the $35 restocking fee.
Maybe I'll try to argue one of those but I think it will be tough to get both.
I think the $35 has some justification I guess because they had to pay for fedex to pickup my GS3 and for fedex to delivery me a inc4g. Lets say verizon gets 50% off fedex retail rates, thats about $10 each way ($20 total) plus they need a guy to open the box and look at it.

And they can't sell the phone new anymore

Tmo, att, sprint, they all do upgrade fees, VZW was the last to implement the fee, its an extra revenue point, plain and simple. Its the nature of the beast. Corporate America. Deal with it.

They say that exactly I think it's scripted or something.
Anyway they gave me an extended battery and cover for 30 to appease me.

Best way to buy/pre-order GNote 2

Looking to buy this phone ASAP. My sprint contract is not up, but I will be cancelling and gladly paying them to get to a real LTE network. Anyone know of the best deal now or around Black Friday? I don't want to pay $299, and then activation fee, and then ETF fee, but i guess if i absolutely have to, I will.

Nobody knows dude. It isn't coming out until a week after BF. Doubtful there will be any deals on this initially, maybe towards Xmas time or some promo at a few stores for gift cards. It isn't going to be released and then have an instant $100 off. You are pretty much stuck paying the cost as is.

You can weasel out of the activation fee if you go to the store. Just tell the rep you will buy from him/her if you waive the activation fee. (The reps make commission off of sells.) He/she will ask the manager for the ok and you should be good to go then. Feel free to mention that you are coming from Sprint and signing a new contract. If they give you crap, just pretend like you changed your mind and want to stick with sprint. If you handle it right, you will never have to pay for an activation fee.
I honestly doubt Verizon or Best Buy will go any cheaper on the device itself.

It has been really hard for me to get them to waive the activation fee. Tried to do it with iP4 and my sister's iP4S. Didn't work, went to 2 different stores/called in and tried to order it. Maybe it was just my luck..
I think you can get the activation waived if you go to a third party reseller, though.
I think if you get the phone at Best Buy where they don't charge an activation fee it'll show up on your first bill.

Were you upgrading? Last time I did the upgrade I had to threaten to go over to AT&T. They didn't like the idea of losing 4 lines.

Yessir.
I didn't threaten my business. Maybe I will try that. Iheard the best way is to walk out saying you'll go to another sales rep, though since they aer commissioned based. Although it seems this may not matter as much, as they have lowered their commission by quite a lot for their employees to they might just be like F it, let him go to a dif store. I don't think there is any way in hell this will happen online or via phone though. I tried it before with absolutely no luck. They do not seem to budge at all.

But not the Verizon version which won't be out yet.
Yeah, it sucks too because I called best buy/ best buy mobile and asked them about preorders. I asked if there was an offer next week for the note ii could I come in and preorder it and get the deal they are offering that day. They said no, the sale counts as the preorder date. I used to work in a retail store that had this exact policy as well, so it is doubtful you can get any deals anywhere at this point.
Yeah it sucks. Best Buy had a %20 off black friday coupon that we couldn't use on pre orders. Would have gotten it at $263
If anyone's interested, I think Wirefly is selling it for $280....at least for my zip code.

Not sure if they can waive activation, but if they can and do, I'll go with them.

I found the best way to do it via Best Buy via their $50 gift card offer they had months ago. You just had to register with it letting them know that if you upgraded you could use the $50 gift card towards it. Also a rep MIGHT be willing to wave their crappy fees in the promise you will buy accessories from them as I believe that still helps credit their sales scores for the month.

At&t activation fee is a joke

Is there anyway to avoid paying this thing? They won't sell me a phone outright and if I add a line theres a $36 fee. I can't stand that fee!! I need to buy in store because I need a receipt for insurance reasons.
If you so indeed activate the phone....just give them a call afterwards and they usually get rid of it without too much hassle...

They used to waive it all the time, but just last month I bought my grandfather a note ii and could not get them to waive that fee now matter how many times I called back! They said their new policy is to not waive activation any longer.

B*tch enough, and they will do just about anything, I got free overnight shipping, and no activation/upgrade fee. Just for complaining about their idiotic in store reps
You can buy the T-Mobile version outright and it works with AT&T's network (even LTE).

Sorry whats a premier account?
I just bought one on walmart.com to see what the tax was. All the way until I hit checkout it said 0 tax. This can't be right. It also said the prices may change once the order ships. This would be great if its true.
They gouge us in california. They tax us on the retail amount of the phone (699.99) even if we only pay 149.99

Just got off the phone with AT&T...no dice... I even threatened them to return my equipement and cancel my service within the 14 day grace period and they basically said whatever buddy.
Of course I'm keeping my phone and and keeping my service causes a lot better than what I had before. All well it was worth a try.

You have to have something legit to complain about, such as my previous order cancellation because the store rep told me he could get me the phone today(4/12/13). NOTE: Supervisors are your friend, the first rep I talked to told me sorry you have to re order. So always ask for supervisors.
