At&t activation fee is a joke - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Is there anyway to avoid paying this thing? They won't sell me a phone outright and if I add a line theres a $36 fee. I can't stand that fee!! I need to buy in store because I need a receipt for insurance reasons.

If you so indeed activate the phone....just give them a call afterwards and they usually get rid of it without too much hassle...

They used to waive it all the time, but just last month I bought my grandfather a note ii and could not get them to waive that fee now matter how many times I called back! They said their new policy is to not waive activation any longer.

You can buy the T-Mobile version outright and it works with AT&T's network (even LTE).

Sorry whats a premier account?

I just bought one on walmart.com to see what the tax was. All the way until I hit checkout it said 0 tax. This can't be right. It also said the prices may change once the order ships. This would be great if its true.
They gouge us in california. They tax us on the retail amount of the phone (699.99) even if we only pay 149.99

Just got off the phone with AT&T...no dice... I even threatened them to return my equipement and cancel my service within the 14 day grace period and they basically said whatever buddy.
Of course I'm keeping my phone and and keeping my service causes a lot better than what I had before. All well it was worth a try.

You have to have something legit to complain about, such as my previous order cancellation because the store rep told me he could get me the phone today(4/12/13). NOTE: Supervisors are your friend, the first rep I talked to told me sorry you have to re order. So always ask for supervisors.

Where to buy and Prices $$$

Lets start listing where the SGSII can be purchased, and for how much.
We all know AT&T now has it for $199 on contract, $549 outright.
Amazon shows it as $150 for a qualified upgrade. The phone page is down, but you can still add it to your cart and order it.
Sams' Club also has it for $169 for a qualified upgrade, $199 for a new line
Weird that a new line would be more expensive...
Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T - Sam's Club Mobile...
I got my Wife's Infuse there for $99 a few weeks back, and they even let us keep her Unlimited Data plan. Works for me.
Still waiting to see if CostCo will have it tomorrow. I like the idea of their 90 day return policy just in case the Nexus Prime is too tempting.

I was thinking about doing this too... So, say if I were to buy it from CostCo at the 2-year price, would I be able to return it within its 90 days for a refund along with terminating the plan early (with no early termination fees of course)? So if this does happen, I should be allowed to buy the Prime, after the return, for the 2-year price, right?
I'm asking this because I was under the impression that, before 90 days, CostCo only held returns/refunds for the handset itself, and not for the 2-year service plan. And that AT&T were the only ones who could offer a refund/cancellation of a 2-year service plan, in addition to the handset, but this would only be before 30 days. Is this true?
Walmart's in store price is going to be 148.88 , but their website is listing it as 164.99 for qualified upgrade. But none of the local Walmart around here have received any of the phones yet in store. I'm going to try to get best buy here to price match.

I just spoke with someone at CostCo Wireless. He has no idea when they are getting it, so buying it there is not an option for me, but I was able to get clarification on their return policy.
They offer the standard 30 day return if you just flat out don't want the device, with no penalty regarding your plan, and your "upgrade" can be rolled back, so same as an AT&T store.
For up to 90 days you can exchange your device for a new one if something goes wrong with yours. After 90 days you are dealing with the standard 1 year warranty through AT&T.
None of the other retailers in my area have the phone yet, so I am heading to my local AT&T store to buy it.

I got an $18 credit by telling them I was thinking of switching an T-Mobile is offering $1 set up cost
I don't support this at all. It's sad that it's being added and I really hope that something happens and it gets reverted back.
Yes I realize that you only pay that once every 2 years, but AT&T doesn't need to be paid $36 for me to take the SIM card from your old phone, and transfer it to your new one.
At least it's not as bad as Verizon trying to charge $2 for every time you pay your bill. Even if you pay it online.
Is this even a concern if you pre-ordered? My upgrade fee amount is on my pre-order. In my case it is $0 because of my FAN account, but if you have a receipt that says $18, I doubt they can turn around and charge $36. If they try, I would fight it like crazy.

Definitely double check your bill as well, sometimes FAN's with waived upgrade fees don't always waive automatically and have to be manually done via business customer care.
If you bought it off Contract like me you don't have to worry about this fee.

[Q] Anyone Know How To Avoid The New Activation Fee?

I read a rumor that the $36 activation fee can be waved if you provide Sprint with your AAA card. Anyone done this?
does anyone know of any other way to avoid this "tax"?
I just pre-ordered the EVO LTE and will supposedly be charged the fee upon activation. Do I need to go into a Sprint store and show them my AAA card? Can I do this over the phone? Does it even work?
Thanks.
Idk about AAA. But I am going to try to get the fee waived upon activation by saying I stuck with my sprint order even though I could have got it cheaper through wirefly.
We will see.

Just and FYI since I said I would report back. I called Sprint and I asked about my activation fee and he initially said that I would have to pay it. I explained that I ordered through sprint even though I could have gotten the phone much cheaper through a 3rd party and I would appreciate it if they would wave the fee to help offset the cost difference. He put me on hold for 1 minute came back and said the activation fee has been waved.
Maybe this route can help some who ordered through Sprint.
To clarify about the AAA activation fee waiving:
You MUST have the AAA discount as your account's discount in order to use this. In other words, if you have an employer discount you use to get 15% off your bill every month, then THAT discount plan must include the fee waiver to get the waiver. You couldn't just flash your AAA card and get it.
So, if you have the AAA as your discount, you will receive 10% monthly off your bill, and waived activation fees. But you cannot mix and match, sadly. I talked to Sprint about this yesterday. Kind of disappointed... I don't want to pay $36 for no reason.

Guess I need to try this route as well. Knowing my luck, I'll get a 'no' person.
It wont hurt to ask when you call to activate it. The worst that could happen is they tell you no and charge you. The best is they wave the fee. I went with 119.00 on wirefly so I can't use the " went with Sprint" argument. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

we shall see if my txt chat skills are up to this challenge once this "ESN storage fee" hits my bill.
If I lose I may ask them to explain how activating my phone costs them money, seems like they ESN goes into the system then blam that is all, once the ESN is in the system I can deactvate and active a month later without a fee, just curious if they have a legitimate reason for the fee,

What if a person with a sero plan (gets free activation) activates your phone on their line, then takes it off.
Now that you're phone's ESN is in their system, you'd be able to switch back to your own phone at no charge (avoiding the activation fee)
You could also call top tier CS. Thanks for the posting. I too called customer service and got the nope-nope-nope line. I don't understand how Amazon can get the activation waived, yet the person at Sprint today told me it is impossible. Every upgrade requries the $36 fee. I got a tough cookie on my first try.
I never have good luck. Should have waited for Amazon to list the phone. What happened to the days where everybody had the same price on launch day (maybe a $10 difference).

Amazon looks like the same link to "free activation" as Wirefly and others...it appears to only be good on NEW LINE activations. Anybody confirm this is not the case? That would certainly be another argument to make with S after I get the phone. To answer your question the AAA membership will NOT waive upgrade fees, but It will waive the Activation fees. Meaning, if you are signing up with Sprint AAA will waive the fee but if you are a current Sprint customer, upgrading to a new device, unfortunately it will not waive the fee. That said, the AAA discount must be active on the account prior to you coming into the store for an upgrade or AT the time of purchase when signing up with Sprint. It will also save you 10% a month and like someone else has previously stated, you cannot mix discount so if you already have a discount the AAA will not apply.
For some slightly better news, if you go with the Credit Union membership discount, that WILL waive ALL fees, activation AND upgrade fees. It will also save you 10% a month. You just need to be a part of ANY credit union, BECU, Alaksa ect...

You are correct. If you are upgrading an existing line on Amazon you will still be charged the $36.00.
I know this because I called Sprint today. Tried to get them to waive activation fee, they would not again, but I was able to get them to cancel my preorder. So I ordered from Amazon instead (always been a fan w/ no hassle). Still saving $64.00 ($50 on phone & $16 on tax).

You can weasel out of the activation fee if you go to the store. Just tell the rep you will buy from him/her if you waive the activation fee. (The reps make commission off of sells.) He/she will ask the manager for the ok and you should be good to go then. Feel free to mention that you are coming from Sprint and signing a new contract. If they give you crap, just pretend like you changed your mind and want to stick with sprint. If you handle it right, you will never have to pay for an activation fee.
I honestly doubt Verizon or Best Buy will go any cheaper on the device itself.

I think you can get the activation waived if you go to a third party reseller, though.
I think if you get the phone at Best Buy where they don't charge an activation fee it'll show up on your first bill.

Were you upgrading? Last time I did the upgrade I had to threaten to go over to AT&T. They didn't like the idea of losing 4 lines.

Looking to buy this phone ASAP. My sprint contract is not up, but I will be cancelling and gladly paying them to get to a real LTE network. Anyone know of the best deal now or around Black Friday? I don't want to pay $299, and then activation fee, and then ETF fee, but i guess if i absolutely have to, I will.

Yessir.
I didn't threaten my business. Maybe I will try that. Iheard the best way is to walk out saying you'll go to another sales rep, though since they aer commissioned based. Although it seems this may not matter as much, as they have lowered their commission by quite a lot for their employees to they might just be like F it, let him go to a dif store. I don't think there is any way in hell this will happen online or via phone though. I tried it before with absolutely no luck. They do not seem to budge at all.

But not the Verizon version which won't be out yet.
Yeah, it sucks too because I called best buy/ best buy mobile and asked them about preorders. I asked if there was an offer next week for the note ii could I come in and preorder it and get the deal they are offering that day. They said no, the sale counts as the preorder date. I used to work in a retail store that had this exact policy as well, so it is doubtful you can get any deals anywhere at this point.
Yeah it sucks. Best Buy had a %20 off black friday coupon that we couldn't use on pre orders. Would have gotten it at $263
If anyone's interested, I think Wirefly is selling it for $280....at least for my zip code.

Not sure if they can waive activation, but if they can and do, I'll go with them.

I found the best way to do it via Best Buy via their $50 gift card offer they had months ago. You just had to register with it letting them know that if you upgraded you could use the $50 gift card towards it. Also a rep MIGHT be willing to wave their crappy fees in the promise you will buy accessories from them as I believe that still helps credit their sales scores for the month.

I got my Note III... for $7!?

Ok, I don't know what happened exactly today, but technically, I got a Note III for free. Somehow. Lemme explain:
I saw the Verizon30 promo code online last week. I called customer care, and asked them to add it to my pre-order. Un-possible they said...
I was able to get customer care to add a credit to my account for $45, then they would credit me another $45 after my 2-week return period ends (to know I'm locked in to my contract)
I then got my upgrade fee waived with another $30 credit to my account, because before they offered me my $90 credit, someone in Telesales said I could get my upgrade fee waived; I took her up on her offer, but with another supervisor.
THEN, I today received my Note III at work. I couldn't open the box, because I ordered the phone in CT, but I ordered it to my job in MA, where they charged tax on the full retail price on the phone. So, I returned the phone in the Fedex box unopened without a restocking fee, and went to corporate to do the return.
I was going to just return the phone, buy a new one and be out.
Then I realized the Verizon30 code was still valid, so I did an order on my laptop in-store, and did an in-store pickup option.
The salesman was processing my order, an error came up, I don't know what was happening.
I was coming in prepared to plop down $299 + CT taxes on the phone. I walked out paying a mere $90!!!
I don't know what the hell happened. I returned the other phone, and the money was being processed to my card already, have the receipt for that. Then, they only charged me $90 for the new one....
I asked them why, they didn't understand it, maybe an error with the promo code or something, but instead of getting $90 off the phone, I payed that amount. They said I shouldn't argue with that price, I agreed, paid and left. Now, I still am getting that $90 credit on my next bill, plus the credit for the upgrade fee I payed in store today. So, technically I paid $7 in tax for the phone at the end of the day, which is nutz.
if anyone else can explain what happened, please tell me, otherwise I'm very confused.
I only paid 175$.. don't know how either.

I got mine for 80$. I used the Verizon 30 code and they said I wasn't able to buy it for 209 so I had to get 120 in free accessories. So I just went back and returned the accessories
Same here.. I used the code and selected store pickup.. Walked in a hour later expecting to spend ~$250 all said and done... and was happy about it compared to the $350 it was going to be.
I get to the store and after playing a game of musical SIMs to get the Note 3 on my unlimited line, we come to the payment screen and he says $127.. I ask him if he was sure and we look at the break down and my unlimited was untouched and the discount charged me $90 for the phone instead of taking off $90.. Then $30 for the upgrade fee and I walked out with a Note 3 on my unlimited line for $127.
Verizon defiantly has some glitches in their system right now.. Here is to hoping they stand up for their mistakes and dont try and screw us later..
Just as a question, if they sold a phone for $90 on accident, could they then demand us to pay the rest? Or is the phone then legally ours?
Oh cool guys. I only paid $750 for mine. Lol

So with this "glitch", is this ordering online and doing an in-store pickup, or is this being done at BestBuy? How did you do it? I want to see if I can do the same.

me too haha
I also only paid 90 bucks. instead of charging me 210, they took 210 off the price! im so glad i wasnt the only one who did VERIZON30 and in-store pickup, now i dont feel as guilty :silly:
Wow, this thread is incredible. I was going to wait to get my Note 3 until root was available at least. I think I'll be kicking myself if I don't jump on this deal today. Thanks for the info, guys.
I believe it has to do with the VERIZON30 code and selecting In-Store Pickup. For some reason a lot of people are getting it for $90 when they do a store pickup (at a Verizon location, not Best Buy).

Mine only gave me the option to pickup at a offical verizon store. Which I didn't like because I really like the guys at the phones plus here better than the official vzw store.
But mine said that my phone was going to be 209 online but only charged me 89.99 once I got into the store.

This is just crazy. I'll be doing this over my Lunch break in about an hour from now. I'll post back to let people know it's still valid. Wish me luck!
What is the exact code for the promo? I'll do this right now

Are you guys upgrading your line? Will this work for those wanting to buy the phone at retail price?

Did you guys have to enter in credit card info online too?
It works!
After reading through this thread at 12:00pm eastern time (I'm in NYC) I decided to pull the trigger and give it a shot. I logged in online and put the order in with the VERIZON30 code. I entered my card number and it showed the total to be ~$260. I got the confirmation e-mail and went to the store where I was able to get the last black Note 3. The rep did the standard stuff with setting up the phone and checking out but he came across an error message. He asked his associate if he had ever seen anything like that before and the other guy shook his head. Unable to figure out what had happened he proceeded with the check out and I was able to pay for the phone for only ~$130 (couldn't convince him to waive the upgrade fee but I can't complain). I'm not sure how much longer it'll be before Verizon catches on but pull the trigger now if you're definitely sure about buying it!
Same here, I only paid 128... when i pick up the phone at the store last night, they want me to sign the bill, it was only $128. I was like really. The employees there was confused too. But they didn't care.
