Downgrading from 1.50 to 1.40...Can't Brick Phone..Help? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm trying to brick my device so i can downgrade to 1.40. Everything is fine up until the point where i have to pull the battery out and run off AC power without battery. When i pull out the battery the phone stays on like it is supposed to, but when i press volume + button to start update the phone immediately turns off.
I relocked my device and am running this stock rom. If anyone can offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

Are you using the actual HTC charger that came with the phone? I've read here on XDA that the stock HTC charger puts out a little more power than normal chargers. Also, you can't use USB via your PC.

Yep, using the one that came with the phone and i'm plugged into the wall. I even tried a couple different outlets. Do i need to have a certain rom installed?

That shouldn't matter since we're dealing with just the bootloader. I'm not sure which guide you're using (if there's even more than one now) but here is the link I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
Make sure you boot recovery, remove back cover, plug in phone then pull battery when it says.

Yesss this sh*t is impossible.! I actually got pissed off cuz I COULDNT brick the damn phone lol

I know right! Never thought I'd be mad cause i couldn't brick my phone. Next time someone says they're scared about rooting cause they dont wanna break their phone, I'll tell them they couldn't do it if they tried.
I think I'm going to go back to HTC unlock. The only reason I decided to downgrade my phone in the first place was because i wanted to flash Newtoroot's rls3 and was not able to get it running without losing service. At this point I think I can get that rom to work on 1.50 before i can get this SOB to brick, much less get through the rest of this damn process. If not, I'll just go back to rls1, cause i had that version running perfectly (bugs listed in OP excluded).
Good luck to anyone who's trying to do this...may you have better luck than I did lol.
Sincerely,
J

I had this problem where my phone would turn off as well..I was using a stock htc charger that came with the E3d. What I did was hold my charger steady because if I moved it too much the charge would leave. No I didnt have a shortage in my charger but it just read like that in the laptop. Probably because being plugged into the laptop or cpu it doesnt feed off enough voltage. Hope this works for you.

[Q] Bricked Thunderbolt? :(

This time I have really f***ed up guys. I really think this time I have actually bricked my Thunderbolt. I was on Bamf Remix 1.63 I believe and everything was running great. I was obviously rooted also. I was bored and decided to flash Protekks Battery Sipper Kernel. Right after I flashed it, the phone would not boot. I pulled the battery and booted up again and it got stuck in a boot loop. So after a few tries I finally got it to boot into the bootloader. I got into recovery and tried to flash a backup and it rebooted in the middle of restoring it. I tried that a few more times. I then let the battery die. Then I charged it up a lot and tried to power it on and got nothing. The screen will not even turn on. When plugged into my computer it sometimes vibrates and my computer detects it and then my computer makes the sound like it was disconnected. I think it is still stuck in the boot loop with the screen off though. BTW the charging light does light up when plugged in. I tried the stock and extended battery to make sure it was not a battery problem. I finally called up Verizon and after I told them it would not turn on he said he is shipping me a free replacement. I told them that after a OTA update the phone would not boot. He warned me that if there is any evidence that the phone was rooted or hacked, I would be charged the retail price for the phone. That is really the only thing I am scared of. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Sorry for the long post, I wanted to get in all the details that I could.
Thanks
Adam

Wtf? This isn't Samsung. OP do you bootloop in bootloader? I recommend you go to the irc and give them any info you can.. you will probably end up flashing a stock ruu through the bootloader but first go to irc.

OK thanks for the replies. Do you think the Verizon warranty center people will actually go to the trouble of getting it to work and then charge me full retail for a new one if they see it is rooted. I already have the stock zip on the SD card so when it does boot up, it will return everything to stock. I have read online that some people have been charged retail because there phones have been rooted but most of them have gotten away with with it..

I think you're almost certainly fine. It's a lot of work and time for big red over one phone. Plus, your etf is less expensive than a replacement device
Sent from my Thunderbolt using XDA Premium App
thanks for the response man. etf= early termination fee? I might not have said in my original post but they are sending me a free replacement device. The rep on the phone specifically said that if they find my phone to be rooted or hacked, that I will be charged around 629$ for the refurb replacement. I really cannot afford that (

I got out of a bootloop on my friend's Insipre 4G (which is very similar to the TB) by mounting the microSD on my computer, and then putting a stock ROM on it. I had to rename the stock ROM PG98IMG (PG05IMG on Thunderbolt), and flash it through the bootloader, but it did work.
Thanks for the post man but the Thunderbolt does not show any signs of life at all besides the flashing orange LED at the top blinking and the computer detecting it on and off every 5 minutes. The stock zip is already on the SD card so when it finally boots up it will flash and hopefully Verizon won't charge me out the @ss for a replacement.

how long have you had your phone and what hardware revision was it? did you try to run the RUU yet?
i think some people just got a batch of faulty phones because this doesn't seem to affect many.
I highly doubt verizon is going to receive your broken phone and boot it up and it will magically work. The only way it will auto-update is if they boot it into HBOOT. If they somehow just power it on it won't automatically apply anything. Keep that in mind. But I really wouldn't worry too much about it. If they charge you call them and tell them wtf I wasn't rooted. I don't even know what that means lol.
I have had the phone since the very first days it was released. Another slight annoying thing I have had happening prior is the glue on the screen has not been holding it down very well and and I can easily get a nail under it. And it wont let me do anything. I have a Droid X as a backup for now but I miss my beast

that's what im starting to think as htc has since released a revision 2 thunderbolt. i know as i just bought mine a few weeks ago. im wondering if the faulty phones were version 1 phones and have since been fixed. i also do not experience the high battery drain most of you guys do either.

Selling my Droid Razr - Bricked/won't charge

Hey,
I didn't feel like going through the trouble of buying the Motorola factory charger or whatever you need to charge the phone when it said *battery low* *cannot program* when trying to use the RSD program (might have spelled it wrong) to restore to factory settings. My battery must have been low and in the middle of the restore, it stopped and now Im unable to get to either recovery or charge it.
I had insurance luckily so I just got my galaxy nexus back and should be to me tomorrow. Do yall think someone will buy this phone like that? i have 2 nandroid backups on there so it's probably not safe to sale with that stuff accessible.. smh.. that's why i liked the samsung galaxy s and galaxy s 2 devices because you can use Odin which makes the phones virtually unbrickable. The phone's in PERFECT condition. Would be nice if there was a way around that man

you can make one looks like here:

if you want to give it a go, will cost you a $3 cable if you mess it up, and will gain you a $300 phone if you do it right.

Yeah but you know when you're a frequent flasher and are sure it only takes about 10 percent batter at the most, you don't charge it to the max but I just made a boo boo by not reading the part that said *You must be running a the rom already before flashing the update portion*.. that caused the bootloop..
Thanks a lot though. You're right

Get phone in to ap fastboot and go down to bp tools and then press vol+.
Phone should reboot in to a sort of recovered state (last firmware that was on phone) and allow you to charge up.
Once 100% retry flashing.
I screwed my phone several times already and thought I wouldnt recover. Through some chat help have always recovered. Same for my Charge after a few times you figure out all the tricks.
You can recover it. I've done it twice
If you check out my post it shows you a alternative and easier way charge your phone again and make it back to stock rom and no root. Then you can sell your phone for a better price or just keep it!
Ill give you $150 for it...
Ill trade you a Samsung Charge for it. Seriously though you should be able to recover.

He recently did the wire trick and while trying to flash the eng hboot to his device it just turned off. his hboot is 1.57.5757 he had TWRP installed and though roms would flash fine each time he would boot loop. It's really hard to tell with that much information, especially since he can't turn the phone on to get more data, but if his bootloader flash got interrupted somehow he might have bricked the phone. This thread is specifically about how to "unbrick" after that happens and he should probably read at least the OP to see if that fits his situation.
One thing he can try that has worked for some is to charge it on the A/C adapter overnight and see if he can start the bootloader in the morning after removing/replacing the battery.

HTC EVO 3D won't turn on at all!!

I just bought an HTC 3D evo off craigslist, the seller said that he loaded the wrong ROM into it, he had android 4.0, tried to upgrade to 4.1.
I don't know if it is rooted or not, doesn't turn on at all (nothing happens, light, vibration, etc), i tried removing-the-battery trick, didn't work. I just want to load a new ROM into it so i can get it working again..
How do i do that?
Thanks.
Does the small led come on when plugged into a charger? Have you tried to hold down the volume down button and power button down at the same time to access the bootloader, also please specify if your phone is gsm or cdma.
(Don't ask me for help as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh!

As I have said, you need to be able to boot into bootloader mode to flash firmware. Whoever sold you that phone didn't tell you he hard bricked the phone in the process. The hboot had to have gottened corrupted. That's why you can't turn it on.

Here's a tutorial that you might find useful in helping you set up adb http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751439.
Now do not take this the wrong way, you should listen to what I'm telling about your phone instead of ignoring me and trying to prove me wrong. Especially since I'm educating you on adb. I gave you that link so I dont have to explain how to set adb up. You have to be able to access bootloader, recovery or have phone completely on to run adb. In the end you will realize what I have told you. The person who sold it to you screwed you over. Your phone is completely bricked. Truly bricked. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm always open to learn new things.
I would definitely concur with Jsparta26, you unfortunately bought your phone from a unscrupulous, deceitful azz wipe.

I read your problem and read through the other suggestions, It does sound bricked but have you tried a different battery?, I had a battery one time that once it went completly dead the phone would not charge it, I had to charge it though an external charger, once it had some juice in it it would charge fine with the phone. All i am saying is make sure it is not something as simple as a bad battery before you decide to use it as a paperweight. If you do get it to turn on, let me know and I can help you get it working again.

Its like I said. Your hboot was corrupted. That's great you got your phone booted back up.
Now as for viper 3d there's no "best" ROM. Its a subjective topic so its basically not allowed. I can tell you its very stable, has lots of tweaks, and highly customizable. Only thing is that is doesn't have 4g or 3d. And it works on any hboot.

brick fixable
I had the same thing going on w/my phone. Problem was: the hboot was corrupted.. The only way to fix this is with linux.. I don't recall the exact files or command that I ran but if you search you will find them and it will bring your phone back to life.. NOTE: every thread i found had old information with older hboots which have different filenames.. Once you find the information on how to fix your hboot aka "brick" you simply need to get your exact hboot file and replace (flash) it through linux.. there is even an ubuntu cd you can download and boot into so that you don't have to install Linux.. I'd give you more info, but I'm at work right now and don't have time to research it. Good luck..!!

i dont know, may be i had to remove the battery for a long time, or during this time dry condensate, after frost.

Help!! Not charging or connecting to pc

Ok so last night I transferred some files with otg cable. Unmounted and then went to put it on charger and it does not recognize the charger. It did charge after I powered it down. But when the phone is on it doesn't recognize anything plugged into the usb port. Anyone have any suggestions? And if not how do I run a ruu or something to get back to stock for warranty without a connection to pc?

Quick update. I am on 3.09.401.1 firmware and a 2.24.401.8 based rom. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but it will charge in recovery mode but not booted up. So seems like a firmware/software issue. Is there any way to flash firmware without using usb to pc? Because it won't recognize the usb at all.

Weird problem. Not sure if it will work but you can try "flashify" from the play store to flash firmware, etc without usb. Keep us posted on your results.
Also see if you can access it through bootloader. You might be able to RUU. Alternatively, factory reset and install ROM in recovery. Or try side adb in recovery..

And if not how do I run a ruu or something to get back to stock for warranty without a connection to pc?

I'm currently using the same firmware ROM base combination as you with no issues. Are you using the charger that came with your phone, have you replaced the usb cable to make sure it isn't faulty?

Weird problem. Not sure if it will work but you can try "flashify" from the play store to flash firmware, etc without usb. Keep us posted on your results.
Also see if you can access it through bootloader. You might be able to RUU. Alternatively, factory reset and install ROM in recovery. Or try side adb in recovery..

I am going to look into flashify. That sounds interesting. I have tried getting the thing to pick up the usb in hboot. But no luck so far.

I have tried three different HTC branded charger/cable combinations. With no luck while booted up. I charged to 100% while shut off.
I have been running this combo for a week or something. Ever since the firmware hit the forums. And had no issues until two nights ago when this first started giving me grief... so I don't know what has caused it.
I also posted this over in the international forums and there's a guy over there with the same issue.

well i am downloading a stock backup and i have a stock recovery not sure how to get them both to work... because i have to flash the stock rom with twrp and then how do i get the stock recovery flashed with a stock rom.... i will figure it out. anyway my plan is to try to take an ota and have that change the firmware and then i will know if i have a hardware issue or a software issue.
Lol. Now I'm not sure what to do. I reverted back to stock rom and recovery and then realized the touch drivers I have aren't compatible.... But I am booted up and plugged into the pc and it is charging but not coming up on the pc as a device. I don't know if debug mode is on because I am stuck at the first setup screen... Ahh I can't seem to catch a break here...

That's what I am trying to do... However I can't get the pc or the phone to recognize the connection. I have been messing with this thing and getting nowhere for so long I feel like I'm just banging my head agains a wall...

...have you tried booting into safe mode and then see if it is recognized? Just a shot in the dark. :fingers-crossed:

How do I get into safe mode?

Press the power button until the power options open. Tap and hold POWER OFF on the screen and the phone should ask if you'd like to boot into safe mode but if your touch panel is not working for you this is not going to work.

Correct. I have totally screwed myself I think. I think I basically at this current time have a fairly lightweight brick that lights up. I have no touch capabilities at all and nothing recognized when plugged into PC. I have tried plugging into a windows 8 and also a Ubuntu machine with no dice in fast boot or adb....

I dont think it is prob with some ROM. I used HTC One with stock rom (official stock by HTC) and after three months my phone stopped charging and also stop USB connection. I googled it and it was universal prob and also HTC knows about that.
See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417377
Phone acted very strange. Details are in above link. And also there are 2 or 3 threads more like this.

Did you end up getting it resolved and if so how?
I don't think AT&T will look kindly on me for having it unlocked and s-off and for having a rom/firmware mismatch...

Unless the OTA adapter screwed up the USB connector pins for data but not power, then you should be able to recover. However like stated there has been a few reports of failed USB connectors.
Does there seem like there is any damage to the usb pins in the connector on the phone?
Did you make sure to have the HTC device drivers installed on your PC before trying ADB. Do you have a Windows 7 PC to try?

So far I have tried on win8 winxp and Ubuntu.on the windows pcs the drivers were definitely installed. No dice on any of them. I am thinking the connector must be messed up. I can't see anything obvious looking at it but the fact that on three pcs one of them running Linux didn't find the phone but will charge it is pretty definitive. I don't have the money to pay for repairs due to having "tampered" with the phone(even though it doesn't say that) it is an AT&T phone with s-off and unlocked and a 1.55 hboot and has a inverted splash screen. Pretty obvious...

If you boot the phone into the bootloader without the cable attached it should come up and say fastboot. When you attach the USB cable does the display on the phone change to fastboot USB or stay only fastboot?

Yep, then it seems the pinouts on the USB connector have been damaged. Bummer.
On the plus side consider this: AT&T will probably still give you device exchange without charging you a fee. First, they mostly don't care about users modding their phones. Secondly there are so many exchange requests coming into them for the One, that all the defective units will just be sent back to HTC directly by AT&T and at that point HTC is not going to bother to go back to AT&T and say listen this list of devices were modified. If they did, that would create a backlog on work for AT&T to match the records to owners and then contacting them and trying to prove that the user did this so far removed from the exchange that it doesn't make business sense to them.
I have seen AT&T users report that they have sent in devices that were extremely modified and obvious, but AT&T proceeded with the exchange anyway because they would rather keep you as a happy customer than spending time trying to prove what you did was the only cause of the failure. Users have even sent back total bricks that they created by doing something stupid and AT&T still replaced the device without question.
When you modded the phone, that basically ended AT&T's obligation to help you with any service/software related issues, but the modding did not void the hardware warranty and it seems your device has a hardware issue that was unlikely caused by the software modifications.
The key in your case would be to do the defective device exchange via phone/mail and not via the walk in device service center.
If you don't want to do this because of the possible risk of flagging by them, then I may be willing to buy your bricked device if you are not going to do anything with it. PM if interested.
