So I have a bit of a decision to make... Also a bit of speculation. - Motorola Photon 4G

I've had my photon since October. I've been an avid HTC fan until I picked up this phone. Sold I was. I've never looked back.
However, I really like the new evo lte. I have serious problems when it comes to new toys that are easy to obtain with something as simple as the swipe of magical plastic.
That being said...
My theory on Motorola and the rumored Photon Q is as follows;
Motorola has said, according to an article on either engadget or AC, that the quad core Tegra 3 with lte will be ready Q4. The fall CTIA is October 9th - 11th. I'm gonna say we will either see an event a week before or an event at CTIA in October. Things just seem to be coming together like a good game of tetris.
Now I really don't wanna burn and uograde when I'm expecting to see something amazing from Motorola. I'm also betting Motorola picks up the ubuntu project which I also think will be shown off in October.
That's a lot of speculation... Lol
So, I'm thinking I'm gonna keep the photon and buy a dock and a keyboard and a mouse and hook it up to this 73inch monster sitting in my living room. Only problem with that is the reviews saying that webtop just sucks a big set.
Questions...
Is webtop that bad?
Is it worth it for somebody who might find it useful?
Is all the functions of the device still there? Text and calls and what not.

Webtop sucks. Useless. Has really specific use case scenarios and very, very little beyond that. Good news is Moto know this, and have made some head way towards fixing it with the new ICS webtop on the RAZR, which will presumably be included on the Photon's ICS update. It's basically the ICS tablet interface with properly scaled apps and a separate home screen layout from the phone. Quite cool.
Tegra 3 is ****e, though, and I can't imagine the LTE variant will be any better. Snapdragon S4 trounces it in very meaningful ways like browser performance, battery life, and audio quality. I desperately wish the international/open market One X had S4 instead of Tegra 3 (Though I still wouldn't buy it because the One X has no SD slot... Whereas the Evo LTE does). If I had the option, you bet I'd buy the Evo LTE over whatever Moto churns out at the end of this year. Next year, under Google, Moto might have a shot - and open bootloaders. This year I for one have been burned enough.

Useless if you are locked but if you unlock it has near unlimited potential. ICS Webtop on the other hand is a joke and is a move in the wrong direction. ICS Webtop should be an extension of "Mirroring Mode" and Moto should replace the current Webtop with a proper desktop environment. If Ubuntu and I can run a proper desktop environment on an Atrix/Photon why the hell can't Motorola. Here's a write up as to why stock Webtop and ICS Webtop are full of fail.

Citrix web apps. And if you use it for work, and your company has a draconian device policy that makes it easier to authorise one device and use it on multiple screens rather than actually use a laptop.
Apologies for neglecting the Ubuntop/Webtop Plus dev. Have yet to try it thanks to being stuck on locked Moto devices myself. Looks great, and I can think of many more uses for a full Linux distro in my pocket.
I actually like what they're doing with the new webtop, though I wish it was more powerful and could run the phone apps in a window like the old webtop. There's a lot of merit in taking advantage of Android's built in scaling, and having a separate UI with widgets and so on for larger screens is a great idea.
Ultimately I wish webtop was ChromeOS, since that would make the most sense from a Google product and service consolidation perspective.

Looks like tegra 3 won't be out till 2013
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk 2

tegra 3 is out now, tegra 3 + (lte support wont be out til late this year, the phones are already being made and software tested. ALL the high end sprint phones will have s4 chips this year.

I'd be ok with a quad core S4 like that lg superphone is rumored to have.
So with webtop just blowing chunks, can you get ubuntu to run on a stock photon that's locked? Or is unlocking mandatory?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA

i really doubt it will have the quad core, sprint isnt gunna one up the evo a few months after by having such a much nicer phone.
and ubuntu isnt even out yet so its not possible at all right now

Like Loki said, his Ubuntop makes webtop into a beast. Your performance will compare with the original netbooks in some ways, but in another it just makes your device infinitely more versatile than just a netbook. Even if you don't extend webtop, basically imagine a Chromebook that uses Firefox instead of Chrome. The only other native application would be the Cell phone window that lets you use your cell phone in an IM like form.
It's not all bad, it's a heck of a lot better for nothing. Before I changed webtop I mostly read webcomics, social sites and used Google Docs. After Lokifish's improvements I now have Bluefish, Abiword, Gnumeric, a real desktop experience that doesn't sacrifice anything from the phone. It is only too awesome to have your phone move seamlessly from being a handset to a miniature computer without any skips in calls or text messages. Since I chose to integrate Google Voice I can text from the web without anyone being the wiser.

Ubuntu actually being a full fledged mobile os is pure speculation right now unless I'm missing recent news. Canotical was vague on the subject. It very well could be talking about some sort of official webtop-esk support.

Lapdock like accessory?

Now since they have located the port on the side of the phone and are offering charging and video output through a single port what are the odds of htc or another third party to release a lapdock like motorola did for the atrix. I know its highly unlikely but would be awesome
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yes, because the sales of the atrix lapdock have been so awe inspiring... Really, for the price of a lapdock, you could buy a decent tablet or a tad more for a samsung tab 10.1 ... Seriously tho, I'll stick with my laptop
Ya that would be pretty sweet as long as they did make u pay for a tethering plan with it like they did on the atrix

This.
The lapdock is just about the most useless gimmick I've ever seen, it adds no real benefit to your device vs. carrying a tablet which wouldn't cost any more and wouldn't use your battery.
I am looking forward to this phone, but I would have to say it would be awesome to do what the Evo devs have done in creating a way to use it with a monitor and keyboard, etc. That wouldn't be too portable, but useful in tight situations, nonetheless.

Yeah it would be cool if you could just plug it into your existing laptop. Buying a new one, SCREW THAT.
IMO that lapdock is the smartphone gimmick of the decade.
I can't believe anybody actually wants that. It's easier just to have a separate laptop and sync it to your phone with samba and tethering over wifi. Not to mention cheaper.

Photon 4g or Evo 3D?

Photon 4G was just announced for Sprint: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/motorolas-4-3-inch-photon-4g-brings-tegra-2-kickstand-magic-to/
Similar specs to Evo 3d in some areas but some intriguing differences too like Tegra 2 chip and it being a world phone rather than US only and having a kickstand. There is also reference to accessing a larger screen through a doc which I'm wondering if is something like the Atrix's laptop-like doc (which I love as a concept).
Not heard anything good about Blur but then there are a lot of Sense-detractors too. Anybody know if you can turn off Blur and install another launcher on Motorola phones without bootloading?
Yea I don't like the design, Blur or VGA front facing cam. And to think...I was going to get this phone if HTC didn't reverse their decision on locked bootloaders. HA!
Neither one is perfect for me
I really like HTC so I'm getting the 3D but if I had my way I would take the new EVO 3D without all the 3D stuff
I preordered a 3D

Well being that its already been shown that the CPU/GPU combo in the 3D is hands above the combo with tegra 2 in the photon, not even an option for me.
There is one feature that would have me choose the photon over the e3d..... 'free' tethering on the laptop dock.
This would set them apart from att with this device and would be the best offer in the industry. If you are willing to buy the phone and laptop dock, they could let you use it on only the phone's data plan. That is win!
But it won't happen.
Ask yourselves that, if the laptop dock use was free, would you be much more likely to buy it?
Decent phone, nice specs but not for me. Plus who knows when it will release. Sprint announced the 3D in March and we won't get it until the end of June so available sometime in Sept. No thanks, the 3D will do everything I want and I prefer Sense over Blur.
I'll take HTC over Moto..
I think the EVO-3D with Myn's "Warm TwoPointThree" ROM will be the best phone for 2011, besides the quad core Nexus-Three
I was going to skip the E3D for some other Android offering and I think I may have found my next phone. It looks good but I have to get confirmation that the bootloader won't be locked down. The specs look pretty awesome and I can't wait until they hack it to work without a laptop dock.
Awesome.
The main reason I'll get this over the E3D is because it's a world phone.
OP you should copy and paste the specs of the phone in the 1st post so people don't ask spec questions.
Photon has 16gb internal storage vs e3d 4gb. I use internal for apps only so 4gb is enough. The Tegra 2 isn't all its Cracked up to be especially against the newer qualcomm chips.
Photon has international support so that could be important for some.

I think I have decided against the Evo 3D. At this point in time we can expect that the boot loader for the 3D will come encrypted with the possibility of being unlockable at a later time. Motorola has pretty much encrypted everything they have released in the past 6 months except the Xoom. So my initial expectations are that the Photon is also going to come with an encrypted bootloader. Which means I more than likely will not be getting this phone. We know pretty much for certain that the SGS2 will come with an unlockable bootloader. To me the choice is very easy. SGS2 here I come.
Seems similarly specced to the atrix..and no 1080p video recording bio

I just saw this and it seriously made me re-think my decision to get the 3D. I've been looking around for benches pitting the Tegra 2 against the 3rd gen Snapdragon. It also has much more internal memory, I believe the 3D is 4gb. My biggest reservation is that Moto isn't very hacker friendly and, from what I've seen, that isn't likely to change any time soon.
But it has been a while since sprint and MOTO played nice

He might be right in the statement he made. The few 3D's that have been seen around are review samples and are s-off. No one is certain whether the initial batch will be encrypted or not due to the fact they were already manufacturing them when HTC decided not to encrypt the boot loaders. We might have to wait for an OTA to get them un-encrypted, won't know until they release. As for Moto, he is correct, they do their best to lock down everything.

[Q] Android on HP Touchpad

This is probably a dumb question in the wrong section but are there any reasons outside of something like a locked boot-loader that Android couldn't be compiled to run on the HP touchpad tablet?
I was just wondering the same thing. The CPU is a SnapDragon so the hardware at least has the potential to work...
I would imagine that it would be quite difficult because you would need to build your own kernel and custom version of android.

Im not a Developer or anything but I would Assume that we Can wait for a Honeycomb Tablet to come out with Similar specs (I.E Same Processor and Ram) and port a Version of that to the TouchPad. It should work if Running HC 3.2 since it supports different Screen sizes too. I would assume only minor tweaking would be needed. But thats just me Guessing.
Sorry but I was thinking the opposite. I would kill to get WebOS running on my new Moto Photon!

I think this is going to become a much more important question, now that HP is getting out of the consumer hardware business and WebOS is going to become unsupported very soon. I think a dual-core snapdragon would be more that enough to run 2.3, and the aspect ratio (4:3) makes it a lot more attractive to me than the existing 16:10 stable of Honeycomb tablets.
If the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich is released to the public, hopefully this can happen. For now though I hope someone will be interested enough to pick up a cut-rate Touchpad (prices are likely to plummet now that Retailers will be dying to offload them) and attempt to get CM7 on it.

use the modem-less AP8060 that the touchpad uses. they would be the target candidates to port to touchpad. could maybe do boot ->boot like IOS jailbreak where you strap webos to boot android.
Since AP8060 is SOC (all in one) - good chance of this working.
I would put up some cash to see this happen... really would... WebOS is nice.. the Hardware is nice.. but AS IT IS... is as it will be and it just doesnt have enough in it for me to enjoy it. [Q] Ice Cream Sandwhich

So just curious, but will it be possible for us to get this on the Photon? Or do you think they're pretty much just skip over any phone that isn't all ready released with it? And weren't they able to put Gingerbread onto the Evo? So would this be possible? Just curious, since I'm sure someone out there has some info or idea. Thanks.
Good question. I know that with my hero I got support up to eclair then sprint decided to pull the plug right before froyo so I too would like to know this.
We'll probably get it, now that Google owns Motorola. But even if that is not the case, the hardware in our phone MORE than supports any version of Android that Google can cook up, and we already have a relatively new kernel so porting it shouldn't be as hard as it was when trying to get Gingerbread on the HTC Hero.
Cool. That'd be pretty awesome. I look forward to it, then it kinda voids the need to upgrade to the Prime. Since we will probably have a quicker clock speed for our processor by then.

I don't really see the need for a higher clock speed already... hell, Android with the MotoBlur and Motorola bloat on there already runs smooth as butter. I'd even venture to say we could underclock a bit to save some battery.
At this year's IO it was announced google, major carriers and OEMs agreed to 18 months of updates provided the hardware could handle it.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
We'll get it, but it could take a while. Once the OS is released, the UI devs & providers have to play with it to get everything to play well together. That's part of the reason Gingerbread took so long to push out, and it's still not on every phone that can handle it. I don't mind waiting, as long as it's being done right. But the Google acquisition of Moto Mobile still has my hopes up that we'll get it sooner than later...
Pew! Pew! Pew! From my Mo-Pho!
http://android-gz.com
Yeah. I'm not worried about battery life. I generally am not able to use my phone at work, as it's not waterproof. So to me that doesn't matter, I just prefer the speed factor. But it runs amazingly all ready. Just always looking for that little extra is all. And as for Ice Cream, I would prefer we got it working smoothly that'd be very much so preferable, rather than some hack job. So I don't mind waiting either. Was just curious. :]
I swear I read somewhere that Ice cream sandwhich was only going to be for tablets. Guess they were wrong, I dunno. Thought I got it from the wiki. Anyways the prime looked pretty cool, but who knows. I think they are going to start coming out with lots of new phones here very soon, including quad cores, and the like. ICS will be the first OS to actually utilize both cores in these phones. Honeycomb is designed for dual core systems, but the UI is designed for larger screens. ICS will be a dual core platform that can adapt to different screen sizes. I think this might be why we are having a hard time overclocking both cores currently. Gingerbread isn't really coded for dual cores like ICS is. At least this is what I understand from reading blogs and articles about ICS.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Good to know!

Sweet. I really can't wait to get this on our phone. Gonna be pretty awesome.
I have been reading up on it as much as possible and not only is it for tablets and phones it is supposed to be backwards compatible meaning older phones with older hardware will be able to run it also

Do you have the place you were reading that? I'd be curious to read the article as well. If you don't mind.

They cut most of the updates out if ICS and push them back to Jelly bean. There is no conformation the there will be dual core support anymore. I hope it is still in there, but we have to wait to find out.
And it sounds like ICS will only be on prime anyway for a while. Unless devs code a version over and no major devs teams are working on Roms for the Photon. I am sure you will all see ICS but not for a very very long time.
Here is some info on ICS I will post more in a few http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/tablets/android-4-0-what-you-need-to-know-968819

A friend of mine who works for Sprint just told me that the Moho will be one of the first to get ICS. Take this news how you will because I have nothing to back it up, but if it is true that will be awesome.

Few thoughts about Lapdock with ICS leak beta

First of all let me start off by saying that I was deeply disappointed with the performance of the Lapdock on the stock Gingerbread ROM. The idea was great in principle, but it just didn't translate to a good or even satisfactory user experience. The entire device was very sluggish and I quickly regretted my purchase.
However, after flashing the leaked ICS ROM, I was encouraged to see the Motorola has scrapped the dual environment of a Firefox/Smartphone hybrid and went with something that makes much more sense; a Tablet/Smartphone environment. Apps load in their default smartphone resolution, but with the click of a button, you can switch to much higher resolution Tablet view. Credit this to ICS.
Gone are the long periods of waiting for the simplest of webpages to load. Gone are the out of memory errors. Gone is the sluggishness of navigating through simple menus. I actually enjoyed using the Lapdock today for the first time since I purchased it. Sure the lack of Firefox closes some Internet doors, but let's be honest, with the slow performance of the browser...who was watching Hulu anyway? Even full screen YouTube crawled on 4g.
I will post again with more thoughts after I get a chance to spend more time with it over the weekend. But Cheers Moto, way to see that your initial idea was a bust and calling an audible.

Lapdock 500 or 100?
I'm using the 100. But save for a few hardware differences, the two model perform basically the same.

Agreed. The only thing the 500 has over the 14" screen and a webcam.
I actually prefer the compact size and light weight (2.2lbs). Also a 10.1 screen is plenty big enough for me.

Wish I'd read the OP's post before I returned my lapdock 500 for the same complaints he had. Ended up getting an ATP to replace it.
Well even then, i hate the idea because i use the lap dock as a student. The sound is constantly giving me issues and it is definitively Webtop 3.0 because i never had sound issue with the old webtop. The issue being the sound cracking system wide, not just music. I have to reset the lap dock and from 'hit or miss' i get it working. Also office on android is awful. I have used the Onlive Dekstop app and it doesn't fit the resolution of Webtop 3.0 so pretty useless and clicking on the screen doesn't correspond to the desktop displayed, have to guess where to click. and finally i have spend hefty amounts on 3 different office apps for android all of which have turned out sluggish and useless when it comes to making your own document / spreadsheet. Also when you disconnect your phone the screen glitches, constantly flickering for a while until rebooted. in my opinion, lap dock plus ICS = fail. I hope ubuntu for android releases soon!
Where is this ICS leak you are using?
I just ordered the lapdock and wasn't quite sure on the speed since there isn't a lot of reviews or anything for it. I mainly bought it so I can have a full sized keyboard and bigger screen size for watching tv/movies while not at home and didn't feel like spending a few more hundred just for a laptop I would hardly use.
ubuntu for android will still suck. and the real ubuntu will only be released on devices that they put it on. so razr will not get the ubuntu from the distributor. I bet that the ics tablet layout will be the norm on all devices when universal docks are released. I cant wait until moto releases a tablet style dock like the padphone. it has to be coming, and I will definitely purchase it. I am using a modified atrix dock and it lacks multitouch on the mouse, but I am loving it. The ics webtop is in beta, so I expect this to get better as it is updated. and "hefty" is kind of ridiculous considering that the real office is a few hundred dollars.
Really considering picking up a lapdock since they are only $60 right now. Just not sure how much use it will actually get.
I picked up the Atrix version for my razr. Wish it had multitouch on the track pad. I modded it for auxiliary output. Besides that, with ics the webtop beta is amazing. This should be the default with any device eventually. Hopefully they release a tablet dock, then the RAZR will be upgraded to the functionality of the padphone. Seriously check it out if you can the phone apps that have corresponding tablet apps can be switched to run as the tablet mode when running. Then it will automatically switch back and forth when docking and going back to phone.

P.S. not flaming, just mystified.
not really worth it for $70 on a refurb when they went on sale for $100 brand new at verizon a couple months. tried it out and didnt really like the it as much so i returned it, hopefully the update has some better features.

IMO, worth it at $70, not worth it at $200 (which is current pricing for the lapdock 100). Works great for me and I'm on the old version, better than I expected in fact. Looking forward to the ICS version as I think that will be even better but it works well enough as-is to not be worth messing with a leaked version.
how do I modify my atrix lapdock, so that my RAZR fits in? Is there a video-tutorial?
silver theyora
Anyone running webtop 3.0 care to say how netflix runs? In 2.0 it crashes after the video is done or if you go back to the netflix queue.

Pop to of back plate, a little force is required.
Remove 2 screws from sides of flip out connector area. Take cover off.
Remove 2 screws from plate holding connectors in. Remove connectors.
