Voice and Data at the same time? - HTC Rezound

Okay, so I just noticed that I can be on a call and I can still use data (3G). I gotta say I'm confused because this is the first phone that have been able to do this.
Does anybody else have a similar experience?

Well if you're in a 4G area, you should be able to do voice/data. Now if you have 3G it shuts off during a call, cause it's using that connection for the call.
ICS Rezound.

The Thunderbolt and Rezound can do both on 3G also. It's a unique feature to those phones.

Yeah our phone can use 4g for data and 3g for call's simultaneously.
or vice versa

Hell ya. I knew 4g would work when on voice call, but when I saw 3g working as well, damn near **** my pants. I thought only att could do that since it is a real talk text surf on one connection. One more reason to steer clear of att now.
Sent from my ICS Rezound via Tapatalk 2.

Doh! My post got devoured somehow.
I remember now that Anantech.com did a review of the Thunderbolt and explained how the basebands allowed for 3G and voice or 4G and voice simultaneously.
I wonder if the basebands changed from the Thunderbolt. Unfortunately, Anandtech didn't review the Rezound, they seem to have the most in-depth reviews.
But yeah, freakin' sweet! The AT&T One X does have me in awe of its display, but its certainly not enough to get me to jump to AT&T.
I gotta say I feel like the Rezound is sweetest phone on Verizon.

I never really needed to use the SVDO capabilities. Probably because I'm almost never on the phone lol... But still.

If one of my very talkative friends calls while I'm playing a game I just keep on playing while I talk either on speaker or with my bluetooth.

This is the best feature of the phone. I loved it on my bolt/

Quote from the article---> "Will have simultaneous voice and data capabilities; while in 3G/4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas, the EVO 3D will allow web surfing while on the phone"
According to this quote the phone CAN do simultaneous voice and data on 3G. I have a buddy that claims his kyocera echo can do this as well on 3G. I'm hoping it can althought I didnt think it was possible for CDMA to do it on 3G.
The Thunder bolt does 3g/voice at the same time

There may be hope for the E3D then
This is one of the reasons I'm excited about this phone. One of the articles I read a month or so ago had technical details on how it worked. It was some extension to CDMA or something along those lines. It's about time!

Stunts like that are the reason why my friends think Sprint is crap
I have seen a few posts that Sprint's network is technically capable, like Verizon, of simultaneous voice and data but that Sprint specifically does not (or hasn't yet) enabled this functionality.
That is pretty disappointing. Shame on you Sprint. You would think that every carrier would have the function since AT&T used to brag so heavily about how the iphone could do it. I also read that only maybe half of the new EVOs UI will make use of the 3D effect. We'll know soon enough

Not entirelly true there. They have some build out to do and more importantly our devices don't have the required chip to allow it.

Yeah.....my buddy is a true phone addict like I have never seen before. He gets a new phone like once a month!! He has soo many phones on his hip(active phones) it looks like a batman utility belt...lol. And for the first time ever in his life he is sorry about getting a phone.....the kyocera phone. I think it really "hit" him when he saw how much radio shack would give him for it when he trades it in for the evo 3d. The phone is only a couple of months old......paid a couple hundred for it and the trade in value is like 75 bucks or something. A true phone addict....all his money goes to sneakers.....phones.....phone accessories....and food. And occasionally child support....lol.

Actually, IIRC, only HTC devices at this point have two radios that can do simultaneous voice and data. Even then, the voice is being transmitted on the CDMA1x network and data on EVDO.

It is only on AT&T. They used to have the commercial about talking and surfing on iphone where the guy forgets his anniversary and makes a reservation while talking with his wife.
Only ATT allows it for the iphone.. but ATT is definitely not the only carrier that allows this like they claimed in their commercials. Probably why you don't see those anymore lol. GET SUED!!!! haha
I've been a verizon customer for a day, came from CSpires mess and haven't looked back. Love my actual 3G speeds and the latest and greatest phones. I don't live in a 4G area but new Orleans and mobile are 1.5 hours away. Excited to see what this thing can do on 4g

The quick answer is yes. The Thunderbolt and Rezound can do voice/data over 3G.
The long answer is no. The Thunderbolt and Rezound technically do data over 3G and voice over 1X on a separate radio.
LTE is a data-only protocol for now and voice is done over either 1X (in HTC's case) or eHRPD (in all other LTE phone's case)

So does it only work on 3g or also on 4g? If you're in an area with good 4g would you have to go through settings while on phone to turn off LTE to then use the 3g?
Whether in 3g or 4g, the Rezound and Thunderbolt can do both voice and data at the same time. Other 4g devices must be connected to 4g to do it.
Can anybody confirm if wifi tether continues to push data when talking and in a 3g zone.
I was using Verizon's tethering the other day and pushed an email through while on the phone. Thats why I came looking for this thread. Holy crap this is the happiest day of my life!!!
So, yes, I can confirm that tethering continues in 3g while on the phone.
Why is this not listed as front page news? Or one of the phone's top benefits?
That explains why I was getting IM's in Facebook while I was on the phone and 4G is turned off. Hah.. Good phone. thanks all. Suck it iphone! lol

How is the Radio?

Samsung devices don't have the best history with Radio quality. I am debating an upgrade and trying to decide between a DNA and N2 on Verizon. I know the S3 and a few other recent Samsung devices have had problems with dropped calls, weak signals in fringe areas, etc. The DNA uses a Qualcom radio so it's pretty stable. It looks like the GN2 is still using their own in house radio design?
My wife's iPhone5 and my N2 seem to get the same signal strength everywhere we go.

After coming from the galaxy nexus anything would be an improvement. But, actually the radio has been great for me
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
The radio pales to the quality in the DNA (which is likely more due to antenna), but is miles ahead of the galaxy nexus.
Personally working in a 4G fringe area, I had better handoff on my thunderbolt than the N2. Both devices forced into 3G I think the thunderbolt performed better on 3g, while the N2 does better on 4G.

Just want to repeat this. On the galaxy nexus I had to keep my phone in 3G just so I wouldn't constantly drop data. This phone however has been great! My wife has the S3 and she also has great reception and data reliability so they must have fixed something.
It's the first Samsung phone that gets reception similar to my old Thunderbolt. My Droid Charge, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S3 all got poorer reception than my GN2 and TBolt (the Droid Charge and the GNex were tied for worst).
Thanks for all the feedback here. How would you say 3G connectivity compares to an old Motorola Droid X (Current Phone)

Personally, I think the GNEX was the biggest POS ever made.
I actually loved my Droid Charge (i still have it somewhere) and after a TON of mods and radio swaps etc it was way way better than I could ever get the GNEX to work.
That being said, the N2 radio is hands down better than either one although it is not as good as the Rezound I still use occasionally and about equal to or maybe slightly better than my Wife's Galaxy S3.

Funny, I've only had the Note 2 a few days and haven't been in any good 4G areas yet, but I find so far that it's much better than my Rezound. Where I live I only have 3G, with 4G being across the lake.. my Rezound would pick up 4g for 30 seconds at a time very rarely (like once a week), and never transmit data, but the Note 2 gets 4g from there off and on pretty regularly, at least in my house. It's 3G signal also seems more consistent, at least going by signal bars and how it "feels" to use (haven't actually compared dBm). The Rezound would routinely drop it's data, sign out of Google Talk, take forever to re-establish it's connection, etc. I HAD to use it on WiFi or it was basically unusable. The Note 2 so far has been great.
While I have Zero issues its the radio, if your coming from a Motorola Device, it's not as good. Motorola just has killer radios. That being said, I have had no problems with the Note 2
I'm in an LTE market in Maryland and my signal is horrible. I can be only a couple feet away from any building entrance and my signal goes out. No 4G, no 3G... just straight up no signal. And the thing that kills me is that the icon will say it's on LTE. I have to be literally standing OUTSIDE to get a good internet connection. And tethering?.. forget it! My connection is intermittent at best. Frequently drops out to the point where I can't even download from XDA via the phone's browser. Love the Note II, been onboard since the first Note but... this is making me think either I have a bad radio or my choice to switch to Verizon from ATT wasn't a smart one. I need PRL's people. NOW!

I beg to differ. I had the Razr Maxx before my Note 2 (and Droid X before that) and so far I'm getting exactly the same amount of signal everywhere I go. Best radio on a Samsung phone yet. Very happy with it.

I'm in the same boat as you brother. Since launch day I've had issues like this even before the LTE came to my area. I actually just had to toggle airplane mode a few minutes ago. The mobile data toggle would be grayed out and eventually say disconnected and the mobile data toggle would be stuck and you get no response when pressed. The only way to get it back on is to toggle airplane mode like you said. I am on 3.16 with everything on the latest firmware/etc and rocking Viper 3.1.0. Its not ROM related I've had this problem for a while and on multiple ROMs. Trust me if I could get an S3 I would in a heartbeat...

I'd suggest waiting a little while and see if the problem persists once the area is finished with its LTE build out. If the problem doesn't resolve itself, then you should take it to a Sprint store and show them how it's behaving. They should offer you a replacement if other phones aren't doing the same thing as yours in that area.
Many people say it's a Evo LTE issue, but that just is NOT the case with every Evo LTE. I for one never have to toggle airplane mode or do anything at all. I constantly have LTE at my house and in my surrounding city. When I go between LTE and 3G areas, my data has no problems whatsoever jumping between those connections instantly.

Couple problems with that... I have no Sprint rip off insurance and I'm full blown rooted and customized. The guy in the OP could probably because he just purchased his but I'm pretty sure I'm screwed. Also it only happens maybe every other day its not a constant problem and I'm 100% sure if I took it to my Sprint store they will blame it on being rooted or tell me to screw myself because I don't have TEP.

Insurance doesn't matter. The phone has a 1 year manufacturer warranty, and hasn't been out for a year yet. Also, if you're in contact, they'll want you to stay so they'll want your phone to be working properly.

Unlocking only matters if you're shipping the phone to HTC. Sprint could care less if you're dev unlocked or s-off. They can't blame it in the towers if you're in store and a GS3 or Note 2 that's on display isn't having the same issue as yours is.

Doesn't really speak for quality as much as popularity/being well known. On ebay, an iphone 4 sells for as much, or more, compared to an Evo LTE. Kinda like a white Evo LTE sells for more than a black one. Same phone and quality, just that the white one is more popular.
